The term "adept" refers to the third level of skill in
Arcana.
It may often be confused with "
elite", the third level of skill in
combat, or "
journeyman", the third level of skill
trade.
Upon entering studies of the third level of Arcana, the student is first
promoted by either three
master or one
archmage and then
imparted with all the spells in their sphere of that level.
The Adept is then taught three techniques:
Imbue, the storage of cast spells into objects,
Unbind, the ability to break the barriers on a person's mind to allow them to see the world of
Ara beyond just the
Material Plane, and the skill of
Spellcraft.
It is at this level that the
mage can now begin to cast and create their own spells from their imaginations, no longer being reliant upon only the spells imparted to them from a master.
The Adept is then sent from the classroom to develop their
Masterpiece, a single spell that must demonstrate complete subjugation of all theories, abilities, and details of their sphere to the degree that it will impress a council of masters. This Masterpiece is the single requirement for a mage to progress to the fourth level of arcana, the
master.
