[Xet Invasion, OPEN] The Light will Abandon You

 Autumn, Era XX Post Fractum
Malian Kame District
1400 Hours

Chaos.

The city burned, smoldering in chaos – borne not by the children of Jorel, but those of the Xet. War had come to the refugee enclave of Ziel Aerca. The tenement buildings, scrapped together from wood and goblin labor, strained under the fires. They shook. Some remained standing; many others collapsed, killing untold hundreds in one fell swoop. This was a city of refugees – the downtrodden; some had turned to crime, but many others were simply trying to make a living. These were hard lives that they endured. For many, they were hard lives that would end this brightening.

The swarms of katta and dorin tore through the city. Gangs, who had been fighting with each other a mere score of candlemarks before, were united in necessity. For the ultimate peacemaker in Aelyrian history was simple… a greater enemy.

That greater enemy had come.

As the fighting continued, a small pavilion of shadows made their way through the Malian Kame district…

They flickered...

... darkness, concealing darkness.

Well, that settled it: somehow, somewhere, Olive had gotten up a god's nose about something. And now the vindictive son-of-a-dorin had sent the Xet to raze Ziel Aerca mere months after the cether had decided to open a business there. Just your luck, Olive-girl...with the arrival of the bugs' forces the Strunz's business was probably sunk, along with half of the finances she'd raised by selling her great-great uncle Svotsky's house.

Bugger the luck!

Hearing the muted roar of cries, raging fire, and crumbling buildings, Olive had done what any sane person tended to do when things descended into chaos: she panicked. Cursing, the red-head ran up the stairs of her tavern towards her room. Or rather, tried to run; it was difficult to move quickly up a flight of stairs when said stairs came up to her knees. Taking a moment to gather her equipment, the halfling charged back downstair's and out her front door, locking it behind her, on the off-chance that it was still standing and she was still breathing at the end of all this mess.

Turning, Olive started running through ZA's streets. Of course, her intent was not to rush to it's defenses. That sort of foolhardy act was for heroic types. No...The Strunz's plan was to get as far away from the Xet's forces as she could and abandon the city before the bugs consumed it entirely.

Adieu dear Ziel Aerca...it was nice while it lasted.

OOCOlive is carrying her backpack, a long knife that she uses as a short sword, a necklace, eight throwing knives, and a dagger. She is wearing a suit of leather armor. Her only skill of note is her Level 1 Pick Pocketing.

He was thankful, so very thankful, when he realized his hiding space was nearly flawless. His life had been a living hell with Raven always around, and just when they got a job opportunity, he went into hiding from her for a short bit. He wasn't hiding for any reason other than to have a nice few moments of silence away from her.

Unfortunately, all of that had come to an abrupt stop when there was a fight. It wasn't any fight, but it was a dangerous one it seemed. There was fire and brimstone everywhere. Not only was this something to be wary of, but it was also something to fight for; at least, if your name wasn't Noxu Za'tire.

"Okay. Time to sneak away," he said. Stepping out from his lucky alleyway that he'd been hiding in for some time, he started to step away from the battle, which was nearly impossible since it was all around him. "Maybe you should just run. You know, take off to the next city over. Let Ziel Aerca burn to the ground. You never loved it. In fact, I'm pretty sure you loathe it," he reassured himself.

Just as he did a complete one-eighty degree turn he started to sprint off in the direction of... well, away from the combat. That's when he saw someone up ahead, or rather, almost below him. He didn't realize that he'd almost tripped over the short statured woman. "Whoa, whoa! Get the feth out of the way!" With a jump in his foot, he did a spin around her and nearly continued to run away.

Unfortunately, that's when he realized who it was. "Olive!?"

OOC Nox is carrying a bow & arrows, along with a shortsword and a dagger. He's wearing a suit of leather armor with a cloak, and with a hood. His only Level 1 skill is Archery.

Chaos. Now this was what Ryori considered to be a good brightening!

If only she could find her elusive, good for nothing partner. Where the hell was he? "Gods all damn it, Zetai, where the feth did you go?" Ryori muttered to herself. Knowing him, he probably ran once the fighting started. Ryori had run, too, but she had ran toward the battle. Not because she was a hero or felt any sort of attachment to Ziel Aerca, but rather because she liked to fight. Who or what her opponent was wasn't important, what was important was whether or not she could sink her fist in it.

"Whoa, whoa! Get the feth out of the way!"

Yep. She knew that voice. Gotcha, she thought, trudging her way through the various people to get to where Zetai was having some kind of altercation with a halfling. Ignoring the small woman entirely, Ryori approached.

"One of these days I'm going to actually make good on my threats to kill you. I trust you realize that." That was her way of saying: Hello partner, good to see you again. Are you ready to work? There was already blood on her face and in her raven colored hair, which was pulled back in a pony tail. Presumably there was blood on her armor too, but given that her leather armor was blood red in color it would be impossible to see any sanguine splatters on it. Which was kind of the point. She was completely armed for battle, sporting her Hegemony uniform robe to mark her as a mercenary and a killer.

"If you don't hurry up we're going to miss all the fun." Sadly, even though she spoke in her typical emotionless deadpan, this really was her idea of fun. Ryori spared a glance at Olive, but didn't say anything to her. She just wanted to get to the front line. If only she'd had the time to go fetch Whiskey Run... her battle trained Mellan was as good as a squad of soldiers on his own. Sadly, she'd been away from him when the battle started. Next time, she promised herself.

OOCRyori wears a full set of leather armor that covers her from neck to feet, with a pair of metal vambraces on her forearms over her gloves. She carries a rapier, two stiletto daggers, and a plain dagger all sheathed on her belt around her waist, a throwing axe strapped to her left thigh, and a machete strapped to her back. She is level 2 in brawling, with experience in free running/parkour and throwing things.

Kael Kael Kael Kael

Now to say that there was chaos within the city of Ziel Aerca would not have bothered the young Vagaran on most days. After all when those damn goblins were involved everything descended into chaos. He had to admit it usually started with him hurling one out of a window… preferably one on the bottom floor. He had given an oath to slay none and it would not do to break his oath should one break their neck falling to the ground.

Now when he had heard tale of what creatures were invading his home it caused Kael to halt his advance almost immediately as his mind quickly returned to that trip west he had taken with the elf and that red haired woman. His plate mail barely reflected any light from the fires off its blackened surface. The leather clad hilt of his father’s blade was just visible over his right shoulder as he lifted his left arm to ensure his shield was secured to his arm.

He gripped the wooden shaft of his spear as he started to move forward once more. The young man stood only six feet though he was clad from head to foot in black plate armor which did little to conceal his movement as he pushed his way forward in an attempt to not harm any of those who might be fleeing.

He silently cursed his luck for the damnable Xet for setting food within the city but he was bound to protect the elf and while the elf was here…. Well it would be best to assist in saving the city while he was at it. From the slit in his helm’s visor the flickering light caught his green eyes as he quickly shrugged used his forearm to push the visor up in order to get a better understanding of the current situation… as well as to prevent too much smoke from building up within his helm.

Should anyone not fit to fight seemed to not understand their plight Kael would quickly shout at them in an attempt to get them moving along. It would be a pain in the ass trying to fight these creatures and to protect these people. He had a vague idea of the destructive power these things possessed and it did nothing to boost his morale.

OOCL1 Spear/Shield, L2 Bastard Sword. He has on a set of full plate mail, a helmed visor, a medium elven steel round shield, a short spear, and his bastard sword strapped to his back in its scabbard

Vaishen was an island of calm amid the chaos. It wasn't just his Demir Kum training that helped maintain his serenity -- no, it was much more. He was a man who had dived as deep into the specter of war as any man could, and Vaishen had seen his last moments on Telath as he was crushed beneath the weight of the Xet army near Primus Gaudeo.

Vaishen had died in war, only to be returned to life by powers beyond his understanding.

So as the Xet forces swept upon Ziel Aerca -- the place Vaishen had traveled after that massive battle -- he did not see a need to panic. He'd slain hundreds of the slaves in desperate battle, and the attack on this city hardly counted as desperate battle.

Donning a set of Hegemony robes borrowed from the local chapter, his sword belt, and his charming wit, the rogue set out to survey what was happening. He didn't necessarily plan to fight unless victory appeared assured, but perhaps there would once again be opportunity for good fortune in the chaos of war.

Vaishen has level 1 Demir Kum, level 1 Short Spear, level 1 Long Sword. He is currently wearing a Hegemony robe, some clothes, and wearing a sword belt with a long sword and a dwarven steel main gauche.

The tenements burned, filling the Third Square of Malian Kame with a thick, acrid smoke.

Even the cobblestones of the streets had begun to smolder with a malignant energy. A haze of choking vapor began to arise whipped by chromatic wisps into a vortex. The five unlikely heroes, gathered in their flight from or to the chaos, had all by coincidence happened upon the wanderings of the Gentleman Troll and his wares. And then, from the corners of their eyes, they would notice that the procession of shadow had stopped.

The shadows, once flickering, now intensified.

They congealed, raging and solidifying, into a mass of nether and hazily defined limbs, a screaming herald of that which was to be.

And then, blackness engulfed the square.

Sight, nevermore.

Seconds later, their senses returned. Buildings, as far as the eye could see, had been completely atrophied, their wooden cores eaten through with a deep necromantic essence. They were nothing but tinder now, leaving a massive clearing of destruction and charred bodies. Corpses flickered with ethereal maggots. Near his feet, Kael would notice a humanoid flesh form, clutching a doll. It now crawled with ants and dark larva, eating through what remained of a child’s eye. The shadows congealed.

And finally, they took their form.

A long strand, becoming a tail.

A ridged carapace, melting into muscle and twisted flesh, covered in scales and prismatic shades that had never been seen before. There were no names for these colors. As the heroes looked upon them, they seemed to change, remaining static only long enough for the eye to focus, and then becoming forever altered once more.

A spiked spine, carved out of an ethereal steel.

And a plethora of hands, bearing malign claws and tentacles…

A Lamia, like the terrible tales of old. But this was no lamia of those fabled storybooks. The lamia, known for their sensual beauty, had been nothing like this. This creature, twisted and misshapen by foul experiments, was far greater in stature and power than any that had come before it. It bore a horrific, prodigious size, towering over even the ample frame of the Vagaran berserker, Kael, by at least a dozen hands – as tall as some of the buildings that had once stood in this square. With its head of sixteen golden eyes, it looked across the square, and its gaze came to rest on Ryori. Though its mouth was covered with stitches and sealed, a thick pus oozed from the gaps… and it seemed to smile. A sinewy arm, festering with maggots, was raised, pointing a finger as thick as a quarterstaff at the party.

“Your empire teeters on the brink of annihilation. You will all bear witness to the coming of a new age of destruction. Relish the honor of falling at the hands of Mal’thresh the Nightborn!

With a vile sweep of its hand, a thick wall of necromantic shadow enveloped the edges of the town square...

Encounter Notes

Mal’thresh the Nightborn will cast End of All-Creation in 10 rounds.

  • This is a rough location guide that will be updated each post. Each square is about thirty feet.
  • Multiple PCs/NPCs may occupy the same square.
  • This isn't rigid, but helps ensure mods/PCs are on the same page regarding where they are in relation to other PCs/NPCs. You can refer to it with OOC notes - for example, all PCs are currently in square B3.

Important Notes
  • Gentleman Troll currently still remains on the field. Items and consumables may still be purchased. He will flee in ?? rounds.

Camena Ruins? Very easy to handle. Giant frog monsters all combined into a mega frog? More difficult to handle. Learning engineering from a gnome child who's thirty eight times smarter than he could ever dream? Child's play. Raven having a bad day? Pretty tough. None of that compared to what he'd just seen happen before his very eyes.

"What... the... fething... feth... the hell?" That was his only response as he watched the buildings around him whither and die down into rubble. It wasn't the best of sights to see and even worse was the sight of that wall rising up and blocking off any idea of escape. "Oh, come on! I didn't sign up for this!" With a stomp of his foot, he turned around and looked back.

The sight before him would scare him chitless if he wasn't used to seeing Raven's hair after she woke up from a nap. "You have got to be fething kidding me," he stated with a completely unenthused and lackluster tone. "What the hell. You know what? You're right, Raven, whatever the hell we're getting paid, it sure as fething chit isn't enough," he stated, reminiscing back to the good ol' days when they'd just fought against giant frog orgies that broke ribs.

For the moment, he ignored the troll as he assessed the situation to the best of his ability. "All right. We're not going anywhere, and there's sure as hell no escape. So we need a plan." Was he being serious? Oh yes, yes he was. It was a rare sight to see, but it did happen occasionally--especially when his life was on the line.

First, his attention went to Raven and he just gave her a nod, "Sunshine, go do what you do best. Flank the damned thing. See what kind of defenses it has on its back. If you can figure it out without getting too close, then all the better." Hopefully, this would be one of the very few times she'd actually listen to him. If not, he'd get punched in the face while she ran in front of the shadow creature and get devoured. Whatever worked.

Then his attention went over to Vaishen and the newcomer. Although he didn't know the newcomer, he did know Vaishen. "All right. We need to get us some leeway to maneuver around. Vaishen, and... you... tall and oddly handsome blonde man, go off and try to get some rubble in the way of this thing. That building B2 area doesn't look like it's going to stand for much longer. If we can knock it down? That might help us." All right, there was a plan. It was vague, but it was a plan.

Finally, he looked to the struntz. "Olive. If you could be a sweetheart, how 'bout you get us some potions, you know... if your little fingers are nimble enough to do at least that." Yep, great way to end the moment by pissing off a redhead. Seemed oddly familiar. Immediately after, he took off away from Olive and toward the right (C3) to try to lure the creature that way to give people time to prepare.

Turning toward the troll, he snatched up his cookie. Well, at least if you die, you won't mind the calories from this... damn good looking cookie, he mused. "All right, you want to help and make a profit? How 'bout we hire you to come on and help us? You want to offer some services? We could sure as hell use some more physical services, you know... like punching the thing? Fighting? Helping out? Whatever you want, we can pay." That was the best he could do to convince the troll, if anything Olive would have to provide better convincing.

"Oh, and yeah, before I go? I'll take a speed potion, and hell... I'll take all the health potions potions I can hold. Make that about, I don't know, five. Six. Yeah, six is good." With that, he yanked a piece of hair off of his head and handed it to the troll and wrote his nameFlynn Rhyder down. Snatching up the potions, he handed four of them off to Ryori before she took off, and kept two for himself. Finally, he turned to the creature. "It's game time." He then pulled the bow off his back and rose snatched an arrow from his quiver. Hooking the arrow into the arrow rest, he took aim at one of the many eyes of the creature and lobbed it off toward it--hoping to get its attention.

Here's to hoping this works.

"Fething hell...." she groaned, sitting up as her eyes adjusted so she could see once again. She almost wished they hadn't. What she saw was brutal, her pale gaze taking it all in with a hard expression. Did she care for all the death and destruction around her? Honestly, not really. With an annoyed grunt, she kicked part of a dead body off her before standing. She was already aching. Fabulous.

No, it was the creature that had her attention. This was not a Xet. What in the feth was it? Ryori took a crucial moment to size the creature up, as well as their surroundings -- of which there weren't much left. She completely ignored the troll. Ryori never carried much coin on her, and there was no way in feth she was giving a strange creature part of her hair to do mysterious magical things with. Hell no. She would literally rather die.

As the creature trained its eyes on her and smiled its gruesome smile, Ryori smiled back. The sadistic woman was afraid of many things, but death was not one of them. There were worse fates than death, and Ryori knew this well. There was no way she was coming out of this unscathed, and she may very well die, but she fully intended on being a pain in the creature's ass first.

"Sunshine, go do what you do best. Flank the damned thing. See what kind of defenses it has on its back. If you can figure it out without getting too close, then all the better."

Ironically, as much as the two of them bitched at each other, when it came down to serious situations like this they actually worked together quite well, reading one another's intentions almost flawlessly. She was thinking the same things that he was saying. He was the tinkering type, the strategist... she was the brute force, the initiator. Ryori would let Zetai handle the people, and she would get the action started.

"On it," she told him, her right hand unsheathing the wicked looking machete that was strapped to her back. "I'll check it out and keep it distracted." With that, Ryori sprinted without hesitation toward the creature, veering to the rightToward block A1 so she wouldn't be within reach of its limbs. Her goal was essentially to size up the creature and look for any potential weak spots. Or, if it kept its attention on her like it seemed to want to, then she could distract it while the others came up with something brilliant. As she ran, she was thankful for all her training and practice with freerunning, which would hopefully make it easier for her to traverse the rough, debris littered terrain with little difficulty.

Well all things considered he should have been relieved when it was not a Xet that appeared within the square that had been reduced to nothing more than a pile of death and decay. Alas it was not proving to be a fortunate day though. Indeed it proved to be quite the opposite as something, which could only come from deep within some nightmarish place, seemed to form from the very decay in the surrounding area… an area that he had spent many a brightening in.

As the troll rattled off the young Vagaran eyed him warily. "Well then... what sort of oil is that? Also....I will take a few of those....and two of those," he quickly said. OOC5 healing potions and 2 Antidotes = 2,500 When the darkness finally cleared the sudden decay that had set in on nearly everything in the area had left the young Vagaran staggered. “What the feth,” he muttered as his gaze lowered to the remains of what had once been a child… so much death in such a short period of time.

Behind his green eyes flickered the beginnings of a boiling rage at the sight of such carnage. He was not angry over the death itself. “There is no balance,” he muttered as his focused his gaze upon the creature that had formed even as it pointed its thick finger in their direction. This abomination dared tread on the realm of death… a realm that was the sole territory of Bani Smalamdhr and not Mal’thresh the Nightborn.

Kael spit upon the ground as he turned his gaze towards Noxu upon hearing his… quite unexpected description of him. The dark armored Vagaran did not move as he listened to the man talk and once it was apparent the conversation was at an end Kael offered a simple nod. When he started to move he uttered loud enough for the apparent leader to hear, "With great satisfaction." Feth…. That thing is huge is what he really wanted to say. Despite his relatively composed, if a bit angry looking, exterior he felt a large pang of fear.

He quickly whispered a death prayer before he stepped over the child's corpse and pushed forward. He would cast quickly glances about for anything that looked sound enough to provide any form of hindrance to the creature's movement Kael would quickly push towards the street to provide some obstacles for the creature to deal with. His destination however was not the building that had been indicated but instead was the creature itself. From what he had gleaned of his fellow combatants was that they were all lightly armored at best which was not an ideal thing to be when facing such a creature.

"Hey! Ugly," he shouted as he lifted the tip of his spear and aimed it at the Lamia’s throat. He began his charge forward with hopes of keeping the creature’s attention. As he drew near though he slowed his pace so he would have an easier time reacting to any sudden movements the creature made. Clank….clank…thud… Feth… with the noise he was making only a blind, deaf, and mute tree would miss his approach.

Once he was in striking distance, assuming the thing had yet to fillet him alive; Kael lifted his left arm to keep his shield at the ready. The first opening that presented itself would result in the young Vagaran thrusting the tip of his spear up towards the creature's belly... or the closest thing it had. While he hoped more than anything that this thing would just kill over… he did not hold high hopes for his luck this brightening. Instead he only hoped to test this things skin to see just how thick it was.

Darkness. Utter oblivion. It was an awful feeling, standing there as the beast's necrotic shadows engulfed them. Well, that's it Olive-girl...Jalat is finally coming to collect your soul. After her life of unrepentant sin and debauchery, the Strunz didn't really think that their meeting would be a warm and fuzzy one. Although, it seemed like the god Oblivion didn't have very many of those kinds of meetings in the first place. At the very least she could say that she kicked the bucket with few regrets...aside from the fact that she was dying poor.

The darkness lifted as suddenly as it descended, revealing a drastically depressing change in the landscape. The small red-head stood stock still and stared at the many buildings she'd come to recognize in the Malian Kame district, smashed and burned to bits in the span of a few moments. And she was standing near the center of it. Olive could feel the residual heat of the inferno against her skin. She could smell the scent of charred flesh rising up from the corpses that littered the ground at her feet. For a moment, the Strunz couldn't move, couldn't think. She just stood and stared. It wasn't terror. It was more fascinated horror. Olive had never seen destruction on such a massive scale before. It took a moment or two to get used to.

Somewhere in her stricken cether mind, she formed a very real and chilling understanding: she was in close proximity to a creature that could level everything in a ninety-foot radius. And the hellbeast had just effectively sealed them in with it, which could only mean one thing....

...she was as good as dead.

"Olive. If you could be a sweetheart, how 'bout you get us some potions, you know... if your little fingers are nimble enough to do at least that."

The sound of a familiar voice through the ringing in her ears made the Strunz blink out of her reverie and look up at the thief. "Zetai." Yes, he had tripped over her right before that demented thing showed up. "Potions...?" She looked at Gentleman Troll blankly, as if this was the first time she'd seen him. But understanding finally reached her shocked brain. "Yes, potions."

Pull it together Olive-girl! You need to keep your wits about you... Glancing at the troll to make sure that he was focused on Noxu and Kael, the cether sidled up behind the merchant and his pushcart full of potions. Moving gingerly, the Strunz reached out, trying to grab one of the healing potions and shove it in a pouch before Zul'tha realized what she was doing. If she had time, opportunity, and if the troll hadn't already caught her and pulled her arms off, the cunning little cether would also try to steal the lock of hair that Noxu had given to the Gentleman. Just because. She stole anything that wasn't nailed down. Straightening, the cether would walk nonchalantly back around to face the troll, wearing her most convincing it-wasn't-me expression.

"Three healing potions, an antidote, and a speed potion if you'd be so kind." She said, cheerfully. Although it just sounded forced really, considering all the death and destruction that surrounded them. She reached down the front of her shirt and pulled out a wad of banknotes, counting out enough to cover her purchases. She knew enough of what could be done with a name and a piece of hair to know that she'd rather forgo her usual frugalness and pay in cash.

Not again.

The struggle for Vaishen's senses to catch up to a swiftly changing reality became less of a struggle and more of a done deal, and the full weight of his situation made itself known to him. He was enveloped in a ring of death, and Mal'thresh the Nightborn was suddenly a real thing. Life had been given a tangible form from darkness itself, and as Vaishen looked at who his companions would be in this fight he realized he might be fethed.

So the rogue sighed. If he lived through this one, he was going to run as far away from the war as possible. Being within ten miles of this damnable conflict seemed to be nothing but a hazard to his health.

Vaishen hated the idea of buying something on credit from that ugly ass troll, especially with his name and a lock of hair for the asking, but the situation seemed to leave him no choice. Necessity overrode healthy superstition, and the rogue plucked some hairs from his head and tossed them in the jar. "Five healing potions and an antidote."

The name written down? Vaishen Zetai.

Vaishen watched the armored man launch a frontal assault, and he observed Raven flanking to the side. So the rogue somehow tucked away his potions, drew his long sword, and moved to flank the creature from the other sideRogue to C1.

This won't end well, was Vaishen's final thought before tentatively closing the gap on that flank.

Gentleman Troll snapped away their hair snippets into the jar, then turned to look at Noxu with a fairly incredulous expression as he suggested that he should fight. A single bushy eyebrow was raised. As Olive angled to grab one of the healing potions, she found herself largely ignored, and the potion cleanly secured in her pocket. The hair, however, was long gone.

“Weh yuh say, star.. mi na fightin nuttin’ big as dat. Deese potions fi oonu own.”

He tossed out the potions to those who’d purchased them, taking the proffered coin and hair respectively. To Olive, he smiled broadly.

“Ah, ya gurl. An antidote, a speed potion, and four healing potions fi yu.”

He smiled broadly. Problem?

Then, he flickered, pushing his cart away. The eye seemed to languish if one looked upon him; he moved at a relaxed pace, yet the cart – and his body – moved far faster than seemed possible. He flickered again, and moved through the barrier almost without effort.

Noxu’s arrow took flight – the first among many attacks that would be launched this brightening. It sore through the skies, arcing beautifully… and stabbed into one of the eyes. The beast did not flinch. It seemed almost to smile wordlessly as several fronds came to focus on Noxu, and the air trembled with arcalysis.

Kael’s massively armored form shuffled forward, ignoring his companion’s commands. Perhaps it was for the best, for the buildings had been reduced to little more than tinder and bricks. There was little that he could have used for a barrier against the towering Lamia, stretching nearly thirty feet into the air in its present state. And so, gripping his spear, he moved forth.

Ryori took flight, vaulting over various timber beams and small flames that stood in her path, her weapons clenched tightly.

Vaishen would move more cautiously than the rogue, making his way to the other flank.

And then, the massive shadow-beast, heresy to life itself, surged forward with a quickness that belied its prodigious size. In the center of the clearing, Kael found himself suddenly accosted by a gaping maw that had opened in its chest. A thousand sharp teeth of black spat at him, showering him in shadows that clung to his limbs and slowed his movement. Still, his spear lashed out, drawing black blood from the beast’s side. A poke, a thrust, and more wounds opened. Superficial wounds, perhaps, but the weapon enabled him to stay at a distance.

Ryori and Vaishen had flanked the beast. But as fronds bearing eyes stretched out, a realization dawned upon them that there would be no respite from the baleful gaze of the Nightborn. The flanks were no such weakness. The left and right arms of the beast stretched out; the massive quarterstaff, borne by the right hand, angled towards Ryori, and begun to hiss with the sound of the nethers. The left hand shuddered, and claws of rotting bone stretched out towards Vaishen.

Shadows began to gather around the massive Lamia.

“No balance?” Mal’thresh sneered as it turned its attention to Kael, its senses augmented to hear even the slightest whisper.

“Your balance is a heresy.. you fool. You think life is your god’s to take away? Your gods will abandon you, as ours did us. Your gods are weak.. fleeting.. fragile. Death is final. Death is eternal. Death is my realm. Look upon me, and see the true face of your true god, human.”
