B&D Anvil

Behind the Thane residence on Circle Drive, a clamor of clanging hammers indicates the smithy location. Several young Halflingss run hither and thither sweeping this or moving that. A muscled Dwarf is shaping ingots into metal parts. He doesn't stop working until the customers begin to peruse the gleaming swords, axes, and halberds. The Dwarf steps over and asks if any customers if they are in need of a weapon. "I am Gimli of Moria, kin to Master Blacksmith of this here shop Baldor Waite. He is off traveling as we speak trading our wares about the realm and bartering for better ore. I am a master weapon-smith as well. These weapons are fashioned by he and I from metals brought from the Cheat and Khardran Mountains. If it's a special weapon you need, we can accommodate. The time needed to craft such a weapon would depend on the complexity. If it's armor you require," Gimli continued, "You'll have to talk to Baldor's partner. Darrid's out back right now, but he'll return in a moment. What are your needs?"

Hanging in several locations are very nicly made wooden planks that listed the prices of the items sold in this forge.

Darius is an upstanding Citizen
Late Afternoon, 9th Brightening of the First Cycle of Junctior
Season of Autumn, of Era I of the Celestine Mandate
Era X Post Fractum in the Age of the Darkening, the Mageocracy of Julos the Mad

Before going to the Veldar Compound, Darius stopped by a smithy. He had heard that better than average weapons could be found in Zerdargia, and Darius wanted to see what was available. Darius was first drawn by the clanging and other noise that indicated a smith was at work. Entering the building, Darius quickly recognized he was in the right place. He saw a dwarf at work that, after a few moments, halted his work, walked over, and greeted Darius.

After Gimili's words, Darius replied, "Serale. I see that you make weapons and armor out of elven and dwarven as well as regular steel. I would like a longsword made in elven steel and a chain mail shirt in dwarven steel. How much might that be?"

Gimili paused for a few moments, calculating, then answered, "Three hundred crowns for the sword, and Three hundred forty-five for the chain shirt. Total, six hundred forty-five. The payment must be made in full and in advance, especially since these will be custom made."

In response Darius first withdrew the correct amount in banknotes, then offered it to Gimili. After ascertaining it was in fact the correct amount, Gimili said, "Before you go, you need to the measured; since the armor will be made in dwarven steel, which we don't have stock items for, it will have to be custom fit." Gimili motioned for one of the halflings to come over and measure. A halfling quickly responded, and began taking Dairus' measurements and noting them on a board. As the Halfling took measurements, Gimili continued, "Now, these measurements and such will give Darrid all he needs to know for your armor, but what about this sword I'll be making for you? Would you like me to scale it's size to your measurements, or would you like to chose a specific length for the hilt and blade? Also, if there any special marking or specific design you would like done?"

Darius considered for a moment, then replied, "I certainly trust you to fit it best to me, and as for any other special design…" Darius trailed off for a few seconds, and then said, "I would like the trace of a gauntleted fist engraved at the base of the blade."
Gimili nodded, and stated, "The measurements are done. Both the sword and mail should be ready in a cycle, made per your instructions, and you can return for your purchases anytime after then."

- A Cycle later –

Darius returned to the shop a cycle later, and was greeted by Gimili again. Gimili, knowing what Darius was here for, went into the back, retrieved Darius' purchases, and presented the weapon and armor to Darius. Darius took the longsword in his hand and held it, testing the balance, weight, length, and overall feel of the blade. It was suited to him perfectly, and Darius smiled at Gimili while enjoying the excellent craftsmanship. After trying on the armor and finding himself equally satisfied, Darius thanked Gimili and left the smithy with his new purchases.

Jabir was happy to be walking in to the B&D Anvil. He was greatly in need of armor and weapons since he knew that the Veldar Training only loaned you what they had, and you would have to buy their armor in the end anyway. So, Laiforge decided that he would go buy new armor and a fair weapon, and learn to use it while in training so that when he was done with training he would be comfortable with his own gear.

Looking at the prices of the weapons and gear, Laiforge was quite pleased. He thought that it would have been a little more expensive than it was going to cost him. This was something that he was very happy about. He knew that he would need some type of sword, he had decided to get himself a shield as well, and then would want to get at least partial armor with what he would have left of his money. So Laiforge took to scanning the prices and the items that were available to see what he would get in the end. Laiforge decided that he would get himself a nice longsword to begin with, knowing that he would be able to utilize it well with the training he was getting. After Laiforge had decided on the weapon, he knew pretty much what type of shield and armor he wanted.

Looking over the counter towards the smithy, "Sir Gimli, if I may place an order please. I am in need of most of the basics I guess it is as I would say. I would like to have made a long sword, medium sized shield, a chain shirt and sleeves, and last on the order will be a chain hood. That is all that I will be requesting at this time." Laiforge knew that they would want the money up front so he pulled out the 465 crown from a bag he kept his coins in and handed it over to Gimli. He waited to see what Gimli would say about how long it would take and if there were any complications with his order.

Gimli stared at Laiforge for a moment, then nodded. "Not a problem my sir dwarf. It will take about 2 to 3 days at the most to have the lot of that prepaired for you. If you want to check back in we should have it done for you in that time." After Laiforge handed Gimli the money for the armor and sword Gimli smiled, "I see you know about our policy already. We take only money up front for items."

Laiforge grinned back and nodded, "Yeah, I overheard you speaking to another customer about that specific of the business. I will be back in about 2 to 3 days to pick up my lot. I thank you greatly. I have only heard the best of what comes out of the shop, and expect that I will get only the best." Laiforge smiled, turned around and slowly walked out the door into the crisp air. He was happy that he was going to finally have his own gear.

It had been a couple of days since Laiforge had put in his order at the B&D Anvil. So, Laiforge decided to check in on the status of his items. Walking into the shop the Dwarf named Gimli nods to Laiforge, "Ah Sir, your gear you have come for your gear just in time. I just finished the last of your shield not more than two hours ago." Gimli smiled and walked over to a far corner of the room where there was a pile of gear laying, he picked it up and walked over to Laiforge. Laiforge smiled, he knew that this was his gear and couldn't believe that for the first time ever he was going to own his own gear. "Here it is Sir." Gimli held it out to Laiforge who greatly took it from Gimli in his arms. "Go ahead and try all of it on, if there is any minor adjustments that I might need to make we can figure that out now." Gimli was very kind to Laiforge, he kind of reminded him of Laiforges cousins, in size of looks. Laiforge put the gear on and held the swords, it all fit perfectly, and on the first try. "Sir Gimli, it is wonderful. Exactly what I expected and more to come out of this shop. I thank you for the gear, and will send anyone I know your way." Laiforge nodded and headed out the door.

Kyonos did not want to waste any time. He proceeded to The Forge by following the sounds, a clamor of clanging hammers. Before long he could smell the heated metal and a bit of smoke from the Forge. Upon entering the Blacksmith Shop, Kyonos noticed several young Halflings running hither and thither sweeping the floor, dusting the wares and and polishing the items that were for sale. Then he spotted a muscled Dwarf who was shaping ingots into metal parts.

Not wanting to wait for the Smithy to notice him, Kyonos walked up to the Dwarf and said, "Serale, I'm Kyonos, newly arrived from Paxia. I am looking to learn the Smith trade and I need a job as well. I have worked in a couple of Forges, waiting on customers, cleaning up and tending to the fires. I am anxious to become a good Smithy."

OOC: I’m adding a new description of this place for the after war period.

IC: As one was approaching the smithy, it was obvious to him, that the building was freshly repaired. It was unfortunate fate of this place, that one of Shadow gates used by intruding forces was situated not far from the B&D Anvil. The orc and goblin raiders had no doubt in storming the building and pillaging it to the last piece of fine steel that was hidden in the underground depository. They’ve hacked the door and all the weaponry stands to pieces. Even think stone walls were marked by scars left by axes and scimitars of intruders.
But no matter what have they done in the past, this place was still alive and running. A couple of younger dwarves were checking through a pile of broken ironmongery, adding it to the pile of complete junk for remelt or to another pile to the repairable ones. One Halfling apprentice was working on the hilt of the sword and another one was sharpening a sickle. The head smith was hammering a huge metal block, but it was hard to say what it was going to be. When Kyonos approached him, he placed the block back into forge.
“So, you want to be a Smith, eh? I am Rongar of Thunderhammer clan. I can pick up one apprentice more – we can always find some work for another pair of hands. But let me explain something to you“ and Rongar places his palm on Kyonos shoulder. “If you came here to devote yourself to intricate art of weapon smithing, then I’m not a teacher of yours. In these days of troubles I’m doing anything what I’m asked – from horseshoes to arrowheads, from axes to ploughs. Thus I teach my students same way – they carry out simplest of these tasks. So, do you still want to be taught by me?”

Though the B&D Anvil looked as if it had been the target of a recent assault, it was apparent that it was still functional and efforts were underway to restore the Forge to what it had once been. Kyonos was impressed with the industriousness of the workers. They seemed intent on getting things functioning in an orderly manner, slowly but surely. This was the way things should be done.

When Rongar explained the situation and made it evident that since only simple items were were being made, then his training would be limited to those items. This was not a problem for the Dwarf. He was relatively young and had many Eras to look forward to, so long as he kept winning the fights that seemed to gravitate toward him. Eventually the B&D Avil as well as all of Zedargia would be restored to what they once were. By the time that happened, Kyonos would have ample time to become proficient at the basic tasks and show his worth as an apprentice. When that happened the Dwarf was confidant the he would advance to making weapons. The offer by Rongar, even with it's limitations seemed fair enough. After all, he had never made anything himself.

Kyonos appreciated that the Smithy got right to the point. After all, that is the way with Dwarfs.

He replied promptly, "That is fair enough. Can I sleep here?"

Kyonos did not have think

“It’s clear that you are from outside the city.” And Rongar made a soft chuckle into his beard. “All who dwell in city now know the simple rules – those who work, have the food to stuff their bellies and shelter above their head to sleep at night. Those who don’t work – have to pay for this. Trury, show him where you sleep.”

One of younger dwarves stood up from the pile of junk and greeted Kyonos with a broad smile of white teeth. He was already old enough to be blessed with a shaggy beard of somewhat red colors, but still it was more a shoots then the real one.
“Come one! Let’s settle you…” Trury guided Kyonos through the smith to utility rooms in the back. Once it was a kitchen, as an old kitchen-range was there. Other furniture was either moved out or broken during siege, and was replaced by several wooden low banks. Each of them was supplied with a woolen blanket and pillow, with a small wooden chest standing in the head. Trury pointed at one of them:

“It is free now. Renda was the eldest among us, and master called her a promising one. So now she’s studying there” and he pointed at the floor. He opened his eyes wide to continue his somewhat mysterious speech “with a real Master. We all want to go there too – but you have to show skill and devotion first. So, we get up early – to clean up the smith, to sort all the junk and do other things. But don’t worry – master Rondar is not greedy, and he’s eagy to share his knowledge. Of course, he’s telling us only what we can understand in his opinion. So, you can put your things in there – there is a key, and its yours for duration of apprenticeship. "

Well, the first of his needs was settled, a place to stay. That way he could spend more time making himself useful and observing those who skills surpassed his. Having something to eat included was an added luxury. He did not expect all that.

He followed Trury to the sleeping quarters. The youngster had a reasonable beginning of a beard but it was just that, a beginning. Of course the fact that the young Dwarf had a red beard enhanced his standing with Kyonos.

When he saw that there would be a bed, blanket and pillow, Kyonos felt that he fell into the lap of luxury. At the last forge he slept on the floor near the hearth. It was what was left of the fire that kept him warm. He certainly appreciated that he would have a real bed. The small wooden chest was something that he did have since he left home. This was really living in high style.

What was most promising was when Trury related that the last individual to occupy his bed was receiving advanced training. He had no doubt at all that eventually he would show enough skill and devotion to be considered for such training himself. How long it would take to reach that point was not important. What was important to Kyonos was that there was opportunity.

The key surprised him at first but then he realized that with matters as they were in Zerdargia there were likely some unsavory elements in town. Maybe even Elves. At the thought of Elves his hand drifted toward his hammer. With everything being there, Kyonos thanked the young Dwarf and got himself settled in.

Right at first light Kyonos awoke, prepared himself for the day ahead and went to the work area.

Once awake, Kyonos prepared himself for the day ahead. Before anyone else got up, he went into an almost vacant storeroom ansd practiced Elementalism. Repetition was essential for him to maintain his skills and hopefully improve his skills. Then he went to the work space and started dusting the items that were for sale. Those that needed it, were polished. Kyonos glanced over at the fires in the Forges. Best to leave them them alone until he gets instructions from Rongar. One thing he well knew, every Smithy had his own idea about the fire in the Forge.

He looked forward to the start of his training. Cleaning the merchandise and sweeping the floor were certainly part of the job but it was high time that he started learning how to make things.
