In Arcana, Bardism is regarded as Musical Magic. The Bards inspire and protect their companions through the Essence of Song. Infusing music with magic, Bards embolden their friends with songs of bravery and heroism into performing feats of courage, while also playing songs of misery, despair, and lamentation to inflict great hopelessness and longing in enemies.

Theory and Practice

Bards are able to complete their course of study and achieve the highest levels of their magical craft while also pursuing other trade skills and weaponry at moderate levels. For musical magic to be cast, a piece of music called a “song” usually invokes a series of both emotional responses within the listeners as well as activates an arcalysis, or magical reaction within the fabric of reality. There are five classes of musical instruments with which songs can be played by bards – voice, drums, horns, flutes and pipes, and strings. In the listings below, a generic instrument of one of the classes appears next to the song as its suggested instrument of performance. Though any song can be sung or played using any instrument through a bard's ability of musical improvisation, songs that are played using their intended instrument will have a greater effect and often enhanced power. Furthermore, at each level of proficiency, a bard can learn techniques that can be used to enhance the way that he plays his music. These skills go hand-in-hand with the basic magical techniques that all practitioners of arcana eventually learn.
