The New Governor Arrives

First Cycle of Pontius
Tenth Candlemark in the Brightening of Carmelyana
The Winter of Era I of the Celestine Mandate
Thirteenth Era Post Fractum, the Second Era of the Reign of Arabella
Paradigm: The Eclipse of the Sun

There is a lot to be said for being small; one can often observe without out being observed. This was her first brightening in the capital city of the Province in which she was born. A lot of water had passed under the bridges of her short life. In some ways she was much older than her years.

There were going to be some changes and one of the first was to make sure everything was Fae friendly when it came to doors, window's and furnishings. She would not have expected that anyone would have considered to make provisions for her size prior to her arrival.

The city was bustling with people moving hither and zither as they went about their business. The building that housed the Governors office seemed busy enough from the outside but what of the inside.

Once inside 'The Hall of the Governor' the official entrance to the offices of the leader of the province of Centripax, she took note of the arched double doors at the end of the corridor. Outside a pair of blue-and-white-bedecked guards stood at alert attention to either side of the wooden frames. Their dress was both ceremonial and official in a blend of elegant formality and common practicality, as matched with the extent of their duties. It seemed to Sharinya that they were guarding something or someone one and it only stood to reason that it was probably her office. She would find out more as the brightening went on of that she was sure.

Fae could be a troublesome lot, at least as far as the guards were concerned for it often seemed that they had little regard for the conventions of doors or even gates come to that, flitting in and out without showing the right documentation. Keeping a track of them was a challenge and it was almost certain that the Governors personal guard were going to face some unusual headaches in their quest to match themselves to her requirements.

A letter arrived bearing the seal of the Chancellory.

Quote:

To: Her Excellency, High Queen Sharinya, High Queen of the Fae, Governer of Centripax.

From: Her Imperial Excellency, Alicia Gil'dae, Lady Imperial Chancellor

Serale and all bright greetings to you.

Firstly, may I congratulate you on your appointment as Governer of Centripax. As the previous holder of that position, I would like to offer you my services should there be anything that you come across in the next few cycles and months that you are unsure of. I have attempted to leave everything in order, but I am sure that, of necessity, there are things that I have overlooked. Please be assured that I will assist in any way I can.

Following on from my congratulations, I would like to request a meeting with yourself. This is in regards to relationships between the Empire and the lands of Kel'rondar, in the hope that we can work together to continue to strengthen relations between our two people.

If you are able to, I would dearly like to meet with you. My offices are open to you, but if that is not convenient, please simply inform the bearer of this letter and I will arrange something else for you.

I look forwards to your reply. Once again, congratulations.

Yours

Alicia Gil'dae

Lady Imperial Chancellor
The man who was delivering the letter would wait for any response, should there be one.

(continued from the gate thread):

After making a quick stop at his house on Avon Row to freshen up and change clothes, Roland trod a familiar route and went up to the Hall of the Governors and approached the first guard he could find.

He pulled out his passport and visa, and waited for the guard to review his credentials. "Serale, I am Roland Moonstar. I would like to make an appointment to see the new Governor, to offer my congratulations. If she is available, I will see her now, of course; otherwise I will wait for a more suitable time."

Flying over to where the guards stood ever watchful of what was going on in the building Sharinya hovered just in front of them.

”Serale, I am looking for the Governors office if you could point me in the right direction?” she asked politely. Perhaps she could have, should have introduced herself but then how would she see how people behaved around Fae?

It did occur to her that perhaps she should have had the newly appointed Thane accompany her on her first day in office. Too late to turn back now the deed was done.

Ooc Alicia and Roland I will reply once Sharinya makes it to her office.

The arrival of the Governor had been anticipated, and though most might have expected some pomp and circumstance to her arrival, others, with more experience of fae, including any who had served on the gates and noted the general reluctance of the fae to conform to nice neat rules about entering a city, had anticipated a somewhat more abrupt arrival.

One of the Guards straightened though he didn't meet her eye. "Governors office second door on the right over there." He didn't point though the door he spoke of was also flanked by guards and his voice was easily loud enough to cross the distance and to make its way into the open doorway.

Those guards also straightened with a clank of equipment. Inside the door, there opened up a foyer which was currently manned by a rotund dwarf who sat behind a desk. If she should choose to enter then he would rise, Serale Your Excellency, Iban Ironfist at your service."

Challenge! Being the new Governor was definitely going to be a challenge. The fact that the guard did not look her straight in the eye albeit a rather small eye, did not escape her.

"Thank you!" she replied making a mental note to herself that she would need to make herself known to those who served under her and find out their expectations of her as Governor and she to give them hers.

Once inside the office Sharinya was well pleased to see a dwarf introducing himself.

"Serale Iban Ironfist, I am Sharinya S'alvia, High Queen of the Fae and Governor of Centripax. I am pleased to make your acquaintance and hope that we are able to work well together.

Perhaps you could bring me up to date with happenings within the province and any correspondence that needs attending to."
she suggested.

A large burly Dorin with an odd choice of hats arrived outside the doors of the office of the Governor. In his furred paws he held a simple letter, stamped with a simple seal, a snake twisted about a waved dagger. The long green feather from the purple hat shivered as he straightened his shirt.

Upon seeing the face of the Governor’s assistant, he deposited the letter, bowed and turned away.

Quote:
To her Excellency, the Lady Governor of Centripax.

Good day to you dear lady. I do hope that my letter has found you well and that your journey has been safe and swift.

Firstly I my apologies for not being here to greet you in person, I am on route to a family friend whose counsel I desperately seek. I am scheduled to return by the first cycle of Melora, after passing by my sisters abode to welcome the newest addition to our family.

Secondly, I had instructed that the office be kept clean and tidy and that the staff about you will facilitate your needs, such a decoration and furnishing. I did not feel it my place to organize such things on your behalf, but I can help with such needs at your instruction.

And finally, I hope that you settle in well here in Centripax and I endeavor to return as soon as possible.

The dwarf gave a short bow as the Governor introduced herself. Of course he scarely needed the introduction since he'd been briefed on everything that could be found about his new boss, and Queens attract a lot of attention. Of course determining what was gold amongst the dross of rumour and speculation was quite something else again, but her descripton matched perfectly even if to his eye all fae did tend to look a bit the same.

"Welcome to the city, the province and of course your office." He smiled at the latter and waved his arm in a broad arc. "Come let me take you through and we can talk where there are less ears to listen, discrete though they might be." He waggled his bushy eyebrows towards the doorway where the guard still stood at attention.

Leading through to the inner office that provided all the privacy that he wanted, he waited before taking a seat, unsure of whether or not she would sit, hover or whatever. A moment passed and then he started to speak.

"Well, I don't know where to start your Excellency since there is a great deal that needs to be addressed. Perhaps a quick overview of history would be the place. No doubt you'll be aware that Governor Andares was taken ill, and has remained in some sort of coma ever since. Her illness left a terrible power vacuum at the very head of the government and while momentum kept everything going for a while things are starting to fall apart. Governor Gil'dae did her best as deputy but she had barely taken office as deputy herself when she had to try and cover the Governors job and barely had she officially become Governor and able to take the reins as she saw fit when the Intendant took her away. She had a falling out with the Provincial Commander and removed him from office. I don't say that she was wrong but the Phoenix Legion didn't take the move well since they were of course loyal to their commander."

He shrugged a little, "then there is the tax charge that has been levied by the Imperials. Governor Gil'dae put some things in motion but really, now the charge rests in your hands and people have naturally hesitated to do anything before we knew your views."

Sharinya listened with interest to what she was being told; the news of a tax did not surprise her but could the province afford another form of taxation levied against them? Time alone would tell as to her response.

”It would seem a lot is to be done Master Ironfist; Perhaps we should get to what needs attention immediately; correspondence is bound to have built up while the Province has been without a Governor.” she said wondering just what was to come.

The first letter was from the former Governor now Imperial Chancellor Lady Gil’dae.

”Master Ironfist if you would please send the Lady Gil’dae my thanks for her kind words and assure her that I am sure things have been left in order. If you could would you please tell her that it may be sometime before I will be in the Capital again but I will be sure to call upon her when I am.” she instructed.

”Could you please let the Lieutenant Governor know that she must take all the time that she needs to attend to her business and that I shall be looking forward to meeting with her when she is free to return.” she responded to the Lt. Governor’s letter. She perhaps should have replied by her own hand but then the person receiving the letter would have had trouble reading such a small hand. She could only hope that Master Ironfist did not mind doing it for her. If he did then she would have to look around for an assistant who was prepared to do a lot of writing.

A letter arrived bearing the Mystique city seal. The letter was written in a simple but neat hand.

Quote:
To: Her Excellency, Sharinya, High Queen of the Fae, Governor of Centripax

From: His Grace, Atl Myrsa, Lord Thane of Mystique, the Cyrstalium City

Serale and the deepest greetings.

It was with pleasure that I heard of your appointment to the governorship of Centripax. I feel that the province is blessed to have your wise influences and leadership. I am saddened that I will not be blessed to work with you more often, but send praises to Carmelya that I still have the opportunity.

I pray that this letter you in good health and since I haven’t bluntly said it. Congratulations on the appointment.

I am in good health, and my wife Tariel is also doing well, and sends her greetings. On another note I am excited to inform you that my Tariel and myself have been blessed by Carmelya, and we are expecting our first child.

Importantly this letter is not letter is not strictly for pleasure. As you may have known last era the city of Mystique sent a cattle drive to a few cities. We plan on once again running the cattle drive. We would first like permission to travel across you provinces. We don’t plan on sending any of the cities troops, just the cattle, and guards to protect it so I understand that permission to trade is not necessary but I would like your support. Also I intend on right to the thanes of your cities, but if you know of any where in your provinces that would interested I would appreciate it.

For the cattle drive we ask that a number of cattle be given us so we only take what is needed, and a little extra for surprises.

Again I wish the gods blessing upon your tenor a Governor.

Your Friend
Atl Myrsa

It seemed that many things had built up while the new governor arrived and it was perhaps inevitable since a Governor was kept busy twenty five candlemarks a brightening while they were in office. Inevitably there would be even more to be done when taking over the job and so as she started on the stack of documents that were taller than her, the dwarf took a seat and a pen, making notes as he did so.

He looked up from his paper and nodded seriously, "consider it done. What do you wish next?"

Being the Governor was a lot of work and perhaps more than she had expected but still she was enjoying it in an odd sort of way. His question when it came bought a swift answer...

"A census of the Province!" she said almost before he had finished asking.

"I think we need to know who we have in the Province and where they are located.

Once we know that we will know where to concentrate funding and capital works, what we can realistically expect in taxes..."
she added thoughtfully before asking if he had any suggestions to add of his own.

A census! His jaw dropped and his eyes bulged slightly at the idea. He stroked at his beard as he often did while coming to terms with something new.

"Ah, well now. That's an interesting suggestion of yours, indeed." He searched frantically for ways of avoiding the work that such a suggestion might entail. He tugged on the beard and frowned.

"So, what is it then that yer has in mind? Will take quite some time to complete such an undertaking and I don't know as we have the people to do it. I mean, I'm sure that we can, but isn't there another way to do it?"
