[Isle of Solace] Cheap Thrills

Timestamp: 1st Brightening of Winter of Era XXV

Solace Isle.

The Rainbow Towers Needs You!

It was a small stall set upon the docks of Port Wessex, largely neglected and poorly maintained by the weaselly Magi half asleep behind the table comprised of rotting wood and the coalesced salt from Terramarique’s mines ingrained within its surface. Bundled up within a seal pelt coat was a rather lanky Human somewhere within his late twenties and still subjected to periodic acne, but not quite proving capable of having a fully formed beard either - the wispy, uneven patches belied the repeated attempts to cultivate such a countenance.

Nailed to the front was the advertising request upon a much faded banner along with one of the lithograph’s that were dubious morally, but tended to circulate quite heavily within Nexus Prime all the same.

Same old, same old. That when Paxia had been ‘selling’ land that it hadn’t even owned upon Solace, there’d been no shortage of takers. Now it was monster infested and crushed beneath the weight of the Xet airship, the Sunbase Katara? Nobody wanted to earn a few crowns. Typical!

But now, as before, the Rainbow Towers continued to maintain a small boat in Port Wessex in the hopes that some would prove willing. To explore the ruins of Solace’s Shipyards for, well, a modest stipend and a percentage of the non-magical findings upon the Isle itself.

Barthelme was there. Again.

He wasn't here for the Rainbow Towers, though. He was there for Risthal. He and his fellow Twisted had done their part in the battle that destroyed the Katara. Given the vast power that had been tossed about in the Dreamscape that day, there just might be something left amid the wreckage of the airship that Narthelme could use. Artifacts of the Nightmare. Secrets that might tighten Risthal's grip on the Dreamscape. Anything, really.

That the Rainbow Towers might be willing to pay him for his expedition was simply an added bonus.

"Serale," the half-elf greeted the mage at his little booth. "I'm interested in the job. In... exploring the shipyards."

Barthelme had almost definitely come alone. He'd have invited Sylaphormes, of course, but given her extreme aversion to nautical travel, it seemed unlikely she would make an exception even for an expedition to the place where the Xet overlord had fallen. And if Barthelme's Dream Bond faded away with distance from Sylaphormes, then he would be truly alone, without even the voices of his Otherlings to accompany him. Alone except for Despoina, that is, close at hand as always, but likewise silent.

But no matter. It would hardly be a first for Barthelme.

One day, Ko'Riel had just decided to pick a direction and keep on swimming. He'd left the Empire for quite some time and had all sorts of adventures. Seen all sorts of things. Experienced all manner of things. Learned all kinds of things.

And then he'd been swimming a bunch, and he'd wound up back in the Empire. Fancy the chances of that! He had no idea what had been going on in this place since the destruction of Katara and all that. Those events had taken place quite some time ago, hadn't they? There'd been... explosions. And Xet. He'd exploded some Xet. So that had been interesting. Luckily, it looked like the Xet hadn't been back, on account of there being people wandering around and being alive and all. That was nice.

His stuff was stashed here or there. Right now all he had on him was a flute. Gently drifting by the docks of Port Wessex, idly providing a bit of somber background music. Suffering a bit from ennui as he floated on his back and stared up at the clouds, the gentle gloomy grumbling of church organs playing around him. And... hm. Somebody had mentioned shipyards?

He'd just quietly drift a little closer to here what that was all about. Shipyards... Solace? That seemed nostalgic. Funny how he'd arrived right where the fight against the Xet had all gone down, just a wanderer who had stopped by again in the Empire. Granted, it was a little hard not to notice him, what with the church organs playing and all - but Ko'Riel was just going to listen in on whatever this was about.

It was cold, the chill wind tugging at the hood of her thick winter cloak, which she'd long since taken to wearing up almost constantly as she'd journeyed north. Nothing special to look at - and cheap enough that the black had long since faded to a patchy, dark grey - it was lined with fur, and had proved a necessary purchase during the shock of her first winter in Paxia. By now, the stale scent of the trunk that had been it's home for the past many eras had given way to the warmer, earthier smell of horse, and she'd had cause to be grateful that none of her mother's maids had found it and sent it on to be donated in the eras since she'd moved back home.

Home. Once again, Kailin was a long way from there.

And this time it wasn't her art, or the call to enjoy the snow-drenched landscape of Jaedaxia that had lured her away. Nor could she afford to take so much time away from her work as she had an era past.

No. This was a journey that had been a long time coming, and one that she was tempted to forego even now, standing at the landward edge of the docks in Port Wessex, and having already half-decided that she could look for a ship when she got to Nexus Prime, instead. Knowing, of course, that she was merely delaying the inevitable. There were times when Kailin really wished she were better at lying to herself.

A gentle nudge at her shoulder broke her reverie, and she absently lifted a gloved hand to stroke the broad cheek of her mount, pale green eyes looking over the docks before her with a practiced eye. Who was coming, who was going, were there any familiar vessels docked here? Habit. But also necessary, if she were going to at least try to find someone who would be willing to send her ashore close to the ruins of Paxia.

"Yeah... might as well look." A soft pat on the neck then, before she turned, reins in hand, to find lodgings for the darkening. She'd seen the horse rubbed down, blanketed, and fed before coming back to take a tour of the docks, the ever-present satchel bumping softly against her right hip as she finally stopped before a decidedly ramshackle stall and it's dozing keeper.

Reaching up, Kailin settled the hood back onto her shoulders as she leaned forward to read over the information provided, and then - with a soft snort and a shake of her head - began to walk away. Solace Isle had never brought anything but trouble, and she'd been around to see a fair bit of it. If she hadn't been tempted to explore then, despite a too-healthy sense of curiosity, there were few chances in Aeternia that she'd be tempted to now with the small matter of the Xet airbase and the general sense she had that it was a Very Bad Idea, indeed.

Except, half a candlemark later she found herself back before the rickety stall, clearing her throat to get the young man's attention, "What sort of information are you looking for, then?" Sometimes even a Very Bad Idea was preferable to facing the ruins of your past. And she was curious, perhaps morbidly so, about the airbase that had destroyed so many of her loved ones and the city she'd worked so hard to rebuild.

Barthelme:

The Mage looked up with surprise, scratching at the wisps of beard that bespoke of an optimist at heart. How long had it been since anyone had bothered to talk to him about business who wasn’t a part of the usual crew and hands. Well, other than y’know, the whole Rainbow Towers being in shambles (an understatement), and trying to move him along so that fishmongers and the like could set up shop where the Mage was working.

“Pay’s a hundred silvers a cycle, plus 10% of findings of a non-magical nature Mister. If you lose any limbs and bring em back I’ll stick em’ back on and if not, well I can point you to a decent Grafter over in Nexus.” the Magi rambled, sucking at his teeth as he considered Barthelme before shrugging. “Should be able to whip together enough bodies before high tide. Got any questions?”

Ko’Riel:

The water was quite chilly, but other than that? The tides being what they were ensured that for now the docks at Port Wessex were a little cleaner. Sure, eventually, the various fishermen and the like would begin dumping their waste from the brightening into the most convenient place to dispose - the water - but for now? The Sea Elf could overhear the goings on about him with ease as he stared up at the clouds.

Kailin:

With a start at Kailin making two new faces in a single brightening, the Magi tripped over his tongue a few times before managing, “Tri-Talismans. The Imperial Shipyards should have had a few, even if they weren’t configured. Anything else that’s found, well, the Rainbow Towers will of course take the great percentage of as part of the uh, building fund, but there’s good pay to it for you and some extra coin depending on what you find.” he wheezed with an optimistic smile.

“Not too much danger. We do this kind of thing about once a month. Few Xet about near Katara, but you’re mostly looking at survivors from the conflict and …” well, the Magi’s hand waved as he trailed off. Uncertain how to describe some of the things that they’d seen on the Isle. “But if you lose any limbs, so long as you bring ‘em back to me I can reattach no problems.”

Looting the remains of Solace Isle, upon which Katara had come crashing down? A risky venture, certainly, from the sound of it. If all the Xet had perished in the crash then things would have been so much simpler, but it seemed they were as hardy as ever.

Regardless, if there was anything of worth upon the island still, then it could do only good to have it retrieved. The sea elf didn't really know anything about these Rainbow Towers, but if they were an institution of Nexus Prime - and Ko'Riel had heard decent enough things about the city - then it would likely be fine.

Drift, drift. Wait and see whether or not there'd be a group to set out with, for now. And let the church organs gently play in the background.

Kailin was with the young mage right up until he mentioned 'survivors' in relation to the word 'Xet', as well as loss of limbs in the space of two breaths. Professional curiosity meant that she was actually quite interested in the idea of watching him reattach a limb, while personal health and safety rules dictated that it not be one of her own.

She couldn't help a slight shudder at the idea, then, as she knew that the likelihood of anyone surviving the loss of a limb to make it back for said reattachment was minimal. Slightly more so, for someone like herself, though the idea of finding focus enough to cast a spell after such a trauma was unlikely in the extreme.

"Dealt with many severed limbs, have you?" Her tone was dry as old bone, one dark brow arched high above pale green eyes that looked at the young man with some jaundice.

Yet, on a positive note, it seemed her intuition had been spot on about the Very Bad Idea that this was. Always nice to be proven right.

Kailin paused as she considered the choice she was about to make, turning curiously to locate the source of the organ music that had been playing in the background of her awareness, feeling a brush of melancholy slide over her.

Perhaps it was that that kept her feet planted firmly on the dock, and not - as they really should have been - marching back to the inn. "Alright, then," she sighed, "Tri-talismans. And what of sketches of the area? Of the wreckage?" If she got close enough to view it in any great detail, that was. "Would such things be valuable to the Rainbow Towers?"

"When do we leave?" For Kailin had some things to see to (like a horse to get stabled), if she was going off on a random mission to Solace Isle.

"A generous fee," Barthelme murmured. "Barthelme is my name, and I accept your terms."

Which was to say, he accepted the hundred silvers, plus a ten percent take of any non-magical salvage. What about any magical items he happened to find? Well, the Rainbow Towers mage hadn't said, and so Barthelme could only assume he would be free to keep any such thing for himself. Or at least he could if the Rainbow Tower folks didn't find out about it.

The next things he would have asked were about what specifically they were looking for and when were they going to begin, but as luck would have it, here was another adventurer already asking those things for him. It was a woman he new, Barthelme saw with little surprise. Or at least a woman he had once met. The random artist woman he had encountered back in Prime, who had given his friend Igrainne a sketch of her sister's birthday party?

It was a small world. Truly.

In any event, if what they were looking for was tritalismans, then that at least was something Barthelme would be perfectly willing to turn over to his employers. He had no use of an amulet created for powering an airship. So the only additional question Barthelme had to ask was,

"Do you really know a Grafter in Nexus Prime?"

Hopefully he wasn't talking about Gilda, because she was ever so dead. Glawrien, possibly? But Barthelme wasn't entirely sure he would describe her as a decent Grafter yet. The training he had been able to provide for her was quality, of course (at least in his own opinion), but it could hardly be called exhaustive.

Oh, wait. That lead to still one more question.

"Come to think of it... what, precisely, do you suppose will be ripping off our limbs? Are you expecting Xet survivors of the Katara's destruction?"

That would be unfortunate. Barthelme didn't have his Xet-magic-resistance defeating bracelet anymore, since those things had presumably been reclaimed by the empire after the war. If there might be living Xet on the island, he would have to plan accordingly. Arm himself with a Dampening Matrix and an Alacrity spell, for example, and then be ready to fight with dagger or Demir Kum.

Ko’Riel:

Ko’Riel drifted about, the only side effect of his lazing within the waters was a seagull that decided to settle down upon the Sea Elf as if it was about to obtain a potential meal if it looked insistent enough and cawed. But other than that? The Thelyri was left to his own devices to eavesdrop upon the Magi from the Rainbow Towers and all who might converse with.

Kailin & Barthelme:

“Fingers count as limbs right?” the Mage queried, holding up a hand that had some quite conspicuous scarring around several of the joints. His ring finger also appeared to be pointed in the wrong direction given that the nail was on the palm-side of his hand.

The music continued about the conversation, though pinpointing its exact origin was a difficult one. Especially when she could hear the sound of church bells ringing in the distance within Port Wessex, but from a different direction than where the church organs were originating. Surrounding Kailin from north and south with its ambience.

“They’d be useful. Anything to help map the area would be, Katara coming down like it did changed the landscape something mighty. Was always a bunch of rocks, but now the rocks are in different places. As for when we leave? High tide. Couple candlemarks.” he added with a smile, revealing one of his eye teeth was missing.

~

“Well met!” the Magi beamed, spitting into his hand and offering it to Barthelme with a friendly, “Harold.” by way of introductions. The hand one that bespoke that he probably didn’t know a Grafter so much as a Thaumaturge that wasn’t all that careful about how he or she went about reattaching the damaged bits, pieces and bodily parts a person might inadvertently misplace upon Solace Isle.

As to what was on the Isle? Well, that one drew a sheepish look, “Monsters. Things that they had inside Katara mostly. Some Xet, but they’re pretty rare, only ever seen the ones that look like a stick insect and a knife had a baby.” Practorians, foot soldiers.

"I am pleased to meet you, Harold."

It was not a lie, though Barthelme was pleased mostly because the young mage was offering to pay him to go somewhere he had wanted to go anyway. As for Harold's fingers? Very sloppy work. Barthelme was pretty sure that he, personally, could do better. It really wasn't that hard to stick fingers back on facing in the correct direction. There certainly was one thing to be said for the work of a Thaumaturge, though, instead of a Grafter: no worries about losing a chunk of Vis with every Graft of a finger.

"If I may ask... how, exactly, did you lose your own fingers?"

Had he been to Solace Isle already? If so, his answer might be informative. If not, it might at least be interesting.

The half-elf actually smiled faintly when the word 'monsters' came up. Now Harold really was speaking his language. It was also good to have the presence of Xet confirmed for him, albeit for a different reason. Now Barthelme knew that he had probably better go in prepared for physical combat, just in case.

"Very well, Mr. Harold. I shall be prepared to travel at high tide."

Actually Barthelme already was prepared to travel. Adventuring gear, armor, weapons, water and provisions for about two weeks. He didn't need to pack or anything. Still, the Mystic could use that time slowly and painstakingly building up a high-grade Alacrity spell. Put in two hours weaving the spell now, plus continue working on it throughout the boat ride to Solace Isle, and by the time they landed Barthelme would hopefully have worked up a super effective combat buff. All the better for Demir Kum-ing Xet to death, should he need to.

High tide. High tiiiiiide. What time was it now? Not high noon. Ko'Riel supposed it didn't matter, there had been plenty of other details given. A couple of candlemarks, for one. All right then, it would be simple enough to wait. Presumably.

Seagull. In the sea elf's experience, seagulls were kind of jerks. His response was to submerge into the water so the bird no longer had such an easy perch - so that if Kailin was listening, she'd notice that the organs briefly sounded as if they'd been drowned.

Pending adventure, maybe church organs weren't so appropriate. Ko'Riel decided to switch to something a little more peppy, more apropos for the impending beginning of an adventure - although given the current circumstances, that might just evoke a bittersweet feel of an adventurer leaving his family and loved ones behind on the call for glory and adventure.

Kailin grimaced at the bad job that had been made on the mage's hand, wondering at the astounding negligence of having put a finger on entirely backwards, and also curious as to whether it was still useful, positioned as it was. But she kept her silence, instead nodding to indicate she'd understood that some sketches might be useful. She would pay attention, then, and - given the talk of monsters that followed - very likely make drawings of what she'd seen once she was safely back on the mainland.

Assuming, of course, that she made it safely back to the mainland, at all. Kailin wasn't at all sure she would show up at high tide, and so did not introduce herself to the other mage there, too distracted to do much more than take note of his name and Harold's as she looked out at the water and tried again to locate the source of the organs.

It seemed disconnected from anything at all, coming from too many directions at once in a way that should have been impossible. She nudged the melancholy that tugged at her, prodding at it like she would a sore tooth, and wondered if it were affecting her decision to go. A thought that was broken by the strange dampening of the music, as if the pipes had been suddenly submerged, which had her shaking her head as if to clear it and turning back to the conversation.

"High tide," she confirmed to Harold, then added, "but best not to wait on me."

And as she strode away from the docks, Kailin heard a change in that strange music, and her hesitation bloomed anew. Did she really want to take any longer than necessary with this task she'd set herself? She did have family waiting for her, and surely Calanon would be back soon, if he was not already.

As her steps carried her away, the pull of the music lessened, and Kailin reclaimed her equilibrium enough to consider what she'd almost signed up for. Back at the tavern, she could hardly be oblivious to the fact that she had quickly changed into her leather armor, braided her hair and knotted it at the base of her skull, and was repacking her bags, making sure to refill her canteens with both water and whiskey. As she did so, she couldn't help humming some of the strange tune that was full of adventure and glory, yet still a little sad. It was almost perfect, given what the Katara had taken from her, and what she finally accepted she was intending to do.

The travel rations Kailin had should be enough to last her, but she purchased a hot meal in the common room of the tavern while seeing to the temporary stabling of her horse and storage of those things she did not want to carry on her back. Then, thinking there was little else she knew to do to prepare, she made her way back to meet up with Harold and the other mage, Barthelme.

A half-full pack was secured on her back, unstrung bow laced to one side (the strings - current and backup - for which were currently secured in a pocket in her armor) and a quiver of arrows bouncing on one hip. Beneath the fur-lined cloak she wore, a small dagger was secured to her thigh. And in amongst the rations and liquids she carried, she'd tucked charcoal, chalk, and clean, folded sheets of paper.

Approaching the young mage, she nodded, "Alright then... any advice for how to deal with these monsters? Or the Xet, for that matter?"

Then she recalled herself and smiled, "Kailin Alyxanda, by the way. Nice to meet you, Harold."

Barthelme & Kailin:

“Steel sliding ruler.” Harold replied with a sheepish look, “Thing retracted a little too quickly on me and well, right as rain now.” except it wasn’t given he’d reattached it incorrectly and was a little too squeamish to have it cut off so a correction could be made.

There was a gesture with his hand, thumb pointed towards the boat for Barthelme if he so wished to board then and prep for the evening. Efforts towards Alacrity proving to be simple enough as if one boarded Barthelme was to find a number of small rooms with two cots apiece for him to stow his gear and claim for the short trip to Solace Isle.

For Kailin there was only a shrug from Harold, already wiping the spit from his hand and looking a little offended at Barthelme not fully returning the earlier greeting in entirety. ‘Fair enough, well if you’re up for it, you’ll have a place aboard.” he added, his hand brushing against his thigh as Kailin went off to prepare for the trip in her own way.

Ko’Riel:

The seagull squawked its protest, but it was to little avail as Ko’Riel submerged himself beneath the water. It was a hard life.

Kailin:

An evening return, and with it Kailin found Harold packing up the stall and was in the process of moving the various effects one by one onto the ship in preparation for cast off. “Carefully?” Harold mused, “They tend to have pretty strong carapaces, so have to hit them in the joints or you’re wasting your time. Direct magic is iffy, but using it on things around it works usually.”

A gesture too for Kailin and a less gross greeting as he added a “Welcome aboard Kailin. Grab a cot and we’ll cast off once I’m done here.”

The equivalent of elevator music played throughout the day as individuals were slowly recruited and the boat prepared to set off.

Nobody wrote ballads about this part of the adventure. Somebody ought to change that.

"Thank you..." Kailin smiled with genuine gratitude for the helpful information about how to fight Xet, even while her brain was laughing at the idea that she might actually have to battle one of the creatures.

It wasn't much, in the scheme of things, but it was handy information to have. Sounded like some buffing and nimbility spells were the order of the brightening, and then just hope that it was enough. Or really, hope that it wasn’t necessary.

Kailin looked between Harold and the boat, then began to help the mage transfer what needed to be transferred for them to get underway, humming along with the music (without paying any attention to the fact that she was doing so) after clarifying whether there was anything that she shouldn't touch or anything that would stay in Port Wessex.

"So..." the question came out less casually than she would have liked, "how long does it take to get over there, and… umm… can you see what used to be Paxia from where we're docking on the Isle?"

Once they had finished moving things, or Harold had shoved her off below to get settled, Kailin would take everything off of her shoulders and lay it on the second bunk. Then she would find her way to the common area to meet with the fellow she'd seen on the docks before, as it seemed they would - at least - be traveling together, for now.

Whatever spells she would set would have to be done much closer to their destination, for Kailin did not want to have them run their course while they were still en route.
