Double Axe [Nexus Prime] Marcaida bows to a bow master

Some time after the end of this thread

For the past few brightenings, Marcaida reported early to Graxa's workshop with his bow, a gift from a fletcher.

Maximus, himself, would be a sword user. Marcaida though, he had no idea what sort of weapon would a soft skin human use. Using a sword might blow his cover, sort of. He didn't really like the idea of using maces or blunt weapons, and he didn't like the idea of specialising in dagger skills. Pole arm might work, but a wagoneer and a blacksmith, it just didn't fit. As chance had it, he was offered a bow. A bow, however would fit Marcaida. The human could have been a hunter in the past or conscripted to the army to shoot some arrows. That would work as a good story in the future.

He brought along the bow, not for fun, but he had counted brightenings and knew the promised ranger, friend of the fletcher would be coming soon, if he kept his promise.

The ranger, a female elf, had been busy. She had been away in the forests hunting a couple of bandits, which she brought to justice. The bounty helped but in the process of performing her dilutes she had need to call upon the Fletcher and restock her quiver, and general supplies before heading off on another quest. The Fletcher informed her of the situation with Marcaida and she, after considering her workload agreed that she would be able to help. She knew the grumpy dwarf, as she had purchased her sword from him many eras before, so she knew his temperament and was going to be ready for his outburst.

Graxa saw the elf approaching. He hadn't seen her for a while and knew her job meant that she could be requested to graves large distances to help in many of the problems that were happening around the lands. As She approached Graxa smiled as he welcomed her back.

"Serale Nylaathria, I trust you are well. What can I do for you this fine brightening?"

"Graxa. It is a pleasure to see you again. I am in need of a couple of things. I need a new sword, as my original was taken from me, and I have replaced it with a blade not worthy of my skill. I'm sure you can understand my wants in these matters as your last blade I purchased was three times the blade that this one is"

With this statement she took the blade from the scabbard that was at her side and handed it to the dwarf so that he could she her problem.

Graxa took the proffered blade and checked it out. The balance was off centre, the metal, although cared for, was of cheaper composition than he would use, and for the elf, was not in correct proportion.

"Well... I can certainly see the problems with this blade. I assume you would like me to make another more suited to your fighting style? I'm sure I could make something special that would be more worthy of one such as you. So this I could make with my apprentice, and we could get this ready for your use in a couple of brightenings time if that would be sufficient? You mentioned a couple of things? How else can I be of service.

The elf shrugged her shoulders, here was the tipping point. Either this was going to go well, or she was already poised to move quickly away to avoid the objects that would be thrown at her.

"I have just come our mutual friend, the Fletcher. He informs me your apprentice is doing well. He also mentioned that he has need of my services in teaching him the way of the bow.

Graxa wasn't expecting this and as he had been holding the blade Nylaathria had passed to him it fell from his hand and hit the stone flooring point first, just missing the foot of the weaponsmith. He growled. "Lad get your butt here now!"

Nylaathria Smiled at Graxa. This was going to be fun.

Marcaida was doing what he was supposed to do when he heard his name being called. That was never a good sign around here. He quickly set everything down safely and headed out.

He saw Graxa speaking with an elf and there was a sword on the ground. He wondered if the elf was there to complain about the sword, a sword that he might have made. He don't remember making any swords that were of lousy quality. He walked forward and nodded at Graxa. "Yes Master Graxa?"

oocwatch your head :-)

"Ya no good bag of bones! I gives ya a mission to help me friend and ya end up getting an elf coming ere to ask to train ya in a bow? What's a wrong with ya lad? Me weapons are not good enough for yours to use or some thing? .

The dwarf was on a roll now he bent down and picked up the first thing that was close enough for him to lay his hand on. Then threw it in the general direction of his apprentice.

"Well here's a reason for ya to pull ya weight around here. That there weapon be no good for this ere lady, who be lucky in that you be taking the brunt of me temper boy. Ya want to learn the bow? Then ya need to make that there lady a weapon of good enough standing before I be letting her be taking you off to fire some sharp sticks at things. Now ya best make something worthy of me name, as this ere lady will spread word quicker than a rat up a drain pipe if there is anything wrong. Now get in back, select a bar of the best steel, and then get out here and start working that there forge. That bar needs to be bent double at least three times for the weapon we ar going to make so get to it.

Graxa left Marcaida to get the good block of steel, and expected him to get started. The metal bending, Graxa would show him, first the bar needed to be lengthened to a good longsword length.

To the ranger he turned.

"Nylaathria, I ain't best pleased with ya either lady. Taking me apprentice always for practice? He better come back without any holes in him! I heard of that one boy you were supposed to train up long ago, came back looking like a pin cushion with all them arrows in him. Ya said it were bandits, and most believe ya, ya know that. I have my suspicions though."

Nylaathria Smiled as she looked on the grumpy one.

"Just be thankful my friend that I ere not come to best thee in a fight. You are a little too slow to catch me my friend, and when we be ready I will get the boy trained up and back to you in a brightening."

oocI thought this was a sneaky way of introducing another weapon making process. Basically Graxa will get you to fold and beat it into shape then he'll let ya go play bows and arrows with my lady ranger..

Marcaida blushed and quickly shook his head. "No sir. Just thinking of learning another skill."

He deftly caught the item and nodded to Graxa's instruction. He headed into the workshop and looked for a good bar of steel. Then he headed over to heat it up. When he heard folding, he guessed what he was supposed to do. After getting metal hot enough, he had to fold it into half, then half again and half once more. He had seen it done many times while he was a child dracon, but he did not understand why. Maybe Graxa would tell him.

Once the bar was hot enough, he started hammering it steadily until it was a good length for a longsword.

Marcaida hit the good bar to a length that would have been worthy of the elf as a long sword. Graxa then came and nodded his approvals.
"Right, now then to make the fold. Use the wedge tool and form a cut like crease in the bar about half way along its length. Be careful not to hammerctge wedge tool to hard as this could cause you to snapp the metal in two, we want the strength of the metal to come from its folds, not for them to become a weakness. Now we make sure the metal bar at the wedge shape crease is hot and then using the straight edge at the back end of the anvil, we form the bar so that it bends, once we get it to aright angle, we get it back in the coals, reheat, and then use the anvil again, we force the two halves of the bar together. Once completed, reheat the bar and we hammer the new half size bar until it becomes over the length we want. Then we respect the process another three times. With each fold, we will make the weapon stronger. So get to it lad. I won't interrupt you now unless you make an error. Fold the metal, lengthen it out again, watch it doesn't misshapen, as we then fold again, and repeat."

Marcaida understood the process well enough and nodded. He decided to reheat the metal first. Hammering and lengthening had taken some time. Once it was hot enough, he laid the bar on the anvil and cut a shallow line in the middle with the wedge. Next would be to hammer one side of the bar, so that it will bend. He continued with his hammering and he noticed the bar was in an L shape. What was left was to continue with the hammering so the two ends meet. If at anytime the bar turned too dark, he would reheat the bar.

Once the two ends met and if it was still hot enough, he start hammering again to lengthen the bar, to return it to a proper sword length. With that done, it was one time down, two more to go... And that was what he did.

Graxa watched, a scowl made his furrowed brow even deeper, so much so he looked like he'd gone to sleep. This was not the case. He watched and nodded as the bar was reheated a good number of times to ensure the he metal was always hot, and mailable enough to form the sword blade. After completing the last bend, and then lengthening the bar the weaponsmith took the bar and examined the makeup. The metal layers could be seen in the makeup of the metal, but the didn't seem to be any air pockets, as these were the swordsmanship bane. Many a folded metal sword had splintered, and broken because air pockets, or gaps were present.

"Now tidy the shop, and get ya low life butt going. Nylaathria Will not care to be kept waiting. When you come back be ready to earn a living ya useless bag of bones.... bow.... bloody useles.... The Dwarf was moaning and being his happy cheerful self, but at least Marcaida was free for the remainder of this, and maybe the next brightening. Only the candle would tell.

Marcaida watched the dwarf leaving. He wasn't sure if he was to complete the blade or to go. He guessed he was supposed to clean the place up and follow Nylaathria for training. That he did. He quickly cleared the shop, returned the hammers to its proper position and place the folded metal bar neatly in the center of the anvil. Once everything was settled, he took his bow and went to meet Nylaathria.

"Sorry to keep you waiting." He said.

Nylaathria Waited patiently for Marcaida to finish. Once ready she offered her hand.

"Serale, I am lady Nylaathria Elaralei. My friends call me Nyl. I have been sent to train you in using your bow. Have you any experience in using any weapons that would fire items before?"

The elf didn't mind if Marcaida was a complete novice, in fact this would make things easier, but she would wait for the answer, before continuing.

Marcaida walked forward and took the hand. "Serale Lady Nyl. I am Maximus."

He thought for a while and shook his head. "Unless you count the time I was given the chance to cut the string of a catapult, then no. I have not even took a bow up in my hands until not long ago."

As Maximus, he never thought to pick a bow. A bow might just break in his claws.

Nylaathria Smiled. There was no mocking of those that were starting. Everybody had to start somewhere, sometime.

"Good so we will start from the basics. Your bow, unless you are about to use it, should not be strung. If possible sting your bow when you need it, this will put less stress on the gut you use for the string, and the bow. If in an attack situation though, have your bow strung, and ready to fire.

To string your bow first apply the loop to the bottom of the bow, putting the loop into the notch, then putting the bottom of the bow to the ground, apply your foot for stability, to make sure the bow doesn't move, then bend the bow, until you can put the top loop from the string around the notch in the top of the bow. Do this now please"

Nylaathria Would wait for Marcaida to string the bow, passing comment, and helping if needed, and then she would continue.

"Next we will look at how to take an arrow from your quiver. This may seem a silly thing to go through, but if you do not do this right from the start, you will come into trouble later. To extract an arrow use your first, and middle fingers to grip the arrow close to the flight, then withdraw from the quiver. This gives you the arrow already in the fingers used to fire the thing. It is surprisingly simple, but some don't realise this, if self taught, and can have issues later when it comes to rapid fire. Anyway, try this now, and get used to extracting the arrow, as the more practice you have now the easier when we go on the hunt.

Marcaida nodded at the explanation and started to string his bow. He tied to gut on the bottom notch of the bow. Once done, he placed the bow firmly on the ground and held the bow tightly with one hand. He pulled the gut, expecting resistance, but trusting his long candlemarks in the smithy to aid him with this strength based task. Once the gut could reach the top of the bow, he looped it over the top and tied it.

"This good, Lady Nyl?"

Next step was to extract an arrow from the quiver. He didn't expect there was a technique to it. He listened well and remembered to use his first and middle finger to pull out an arrow. It was an odd movement, so he returned the arrow and tried a few more times until he felt comfortable with the action.

"Think I am good Lady Nyl."

Nyl watched and checked the actions of Marcaida. She smiled to herself with the removal of the arrow. Yes, there were reasons to the simplest of training actions. The arrows were at times stubbornly stuck, of tangled together in the quiver, sometimes they would come out all at the wrong angle. It was best to find out these things before a real situation led one to being dead, which really wasn't a good thing.

"Good. So the first two basics are coming along. Now then stance. How you stand when you fire can give a problem. Your firing arm, the one you use to pick out the arrow, the leg on the same side of your body will be the leg that is rested on as a strength. That does not mean that you must be rigid! By strength I mean that you will be relying on the leg to hold you steady, by relaxing and imagining your energy flowing through to the floor down that leg. You will not be rigid, because if you are I will be able to knock you over with a simple push, but if you relax and think the correct way then you will be like the trunk of a tree, flexible but strong.

So stand with your strong leg back the other pointing towards an imagined target. Now relax. Allow yourself to think the energy through your body towards the ground through your strong leg. Do not be rigid. For I am going to push you soon and you will either by moved or stay in place. "

Nylaathria Would wait until Marcaida was just about ready then she would push from the side. Was Marcaida ready?

Stance. Marcaida thought to himself. Stance was an important part in all combat skills and so he listened carefully. At the end of it, he tried the standing stance.

He set his legs apart, left foot forward. It felt odd. He always stood with his right foot forward with all his other actions. Smithing, swordfighting, spell casting. He shifted his legs back and forth, ignoring the fact how silly he must have looked. Then he understood. There were times he had to shift his master foot back. When he needed to gather strength as his master arm pulled back at the same time. He understood the arrow was the attack weapon. The bow was just how the mean to use the weapon.

Next, he pointed his foot forward and that felt comfortable enough. That was the basis to swordfighting too. No problems there.

Then once he got into the correct stance, he imagined himself casting star of force. It was almost a similar leg stance. Firmly on the ground, but ready to side step or hold his ground.

He felt good that he could gather understanding from all his other abilities. He nodded to signal he was ready and stood to his understanding.
