[Hospital] Joyau Reports for Duty

The First of the Month of Kalendryasin the Season of Winter, Era I of the Celestine Mandate, Era XV Post Fractum

Joyau hustled down the walkway through the beautiful gardens of De'Gaull hospital. The peaceful grounds were in direct opposition to her mission, if her suspicions were confirmed. Was there aa chance she would see and learn to treat battle wounds. Her short legs finally reached the imposing doors. She dropped her knapsack containing her healing and herblore books to the ground and grasping the door knob heaved the door open. She then picked up her knapsack and flew down the halls looking for Thaum Cobalt Deverres' office.

War, war was never a pretty sight on and off the battle field. Even if it was just started and just a few units went into battle there were still people hurt from what took place. It was rather quiet a few people were resting on the beds as an old man was yelling at the people about the pain in his leg, his right leg just above the knee cap was bleeding rather bad as an sharp wooden stick was jammed inside.

The office she was looking for was on the other side of the room, it was an pure white wooden door with an sigh that held his name in black bold letters.

None of the people really stopped the flying fae just with the yelling old man who was not even trying to hear what they were talking about.

Joyau tried not to get distracted but she couldn't help noticing all the casualties in the medical wards. Finally she saw a sign pointing the way to the office of Thaum Deverres. She decided to land and walk the rest of the way to his office. She was very much aware the humans didn't like Faes flying around, she supposed it was because they were jealous they couldn't fly.

As she came in for a landing, she spied the placcard with the Thaum's name on it. Then she looked down, and started screaming. There was a severely injured man rin a bed right in her way. Before she knew it, she had slammed into him. She fell backwards and screamed again. Blood was dripping from a huge wound in his leg. Then she noticed the large wooden log (at least it looked like a log to her) protruding from his leg.

She jumped up then realized she had blood all over her clean dress. She stood there for a moment with her hands over her mouth. Her eyes wide with horror.

"It is not safe for one like you to be flying around." A soft voice said behind her, Once she saw the voice she would see a small faerie much like herself. She was from Master Cobalt, a simple spell brought her here from her plane for a short time.

There form of arcana was rare but Cobalt had to keep up with his powers for as a master if he stopped for long he might lose it all. The faerie in question was meant to help anyone in need that the other doctors did not see, like Joyau right now.

"I don't have long, how can I help you cousin?"

Almost immediatley, Joyau heard a soft soothing voice above her which relaxed her instantly. She looked up and saw a smaller fae which she immediatly recognized as one of the etheral faes from the Celestial realm, one of the most mystical fae dwelling places. Forgetting her embarrasment for a moment she blurted, "Why are you here?"

Before the smaller fae replied, Joyau blurted out her apologies for being so clumsy. "Sometimes when I'm nervous I automatically fly." she replied. She was astounded that the fae had called her cousin. The faeries in her village depended on the sprite faes to help them do things, but outsider faes sometimes were very prejudice toward sprites calling them "Diana's mistake". Every sprite knew that when Diana had created their unique race from halflings and trolls, she had declared sprites to be faes, much to the chagrin of some faeries.

She looked at the wounded man then, finally remembering he was there. "I'm so sorry I ran into you, I hope I didn't hurt you further. I am here to learn healing, not cause any more pain to the patients. She gently patted the patient's hand, then looked up at the fae again, "I need to report for duty with Thaum Deveries."

She just stared at her smiling as if she knew everything yet nothing at the same time. She just slowly took to the air, her hand on hers leading her away from the people towards the door that the master was waiting it would seem.

As they came to the door, some force opened it as they went in closing on its own. Behind an desk there was a person reading a old scroll, he looked to be up in mid-age like most humans with grey hair and a tired face.

Joyau took the faes' outstretched hand as she led her into the Thaum's office. Joyau was drawn into the serenity and reverence of the aura of the mystical fae. She almost started crying, in fact, tears began to flood her moss green eyes. She realized how much the secular world had drained her, taking from her serenity and peace. She had gotten so caught up in the energy of the different races she had been amongst she had forgotten how to pray and meditate. She was ashamed of herself, but she understood now that without the auras of the older faes in her village, she was only a spiritual novice. When she was around spiritual beings, their spirtuality rubbed off, but outside of her village there was not the companionship of like minds and spirits. No wonder the elders of her village so vehemently opposed her going into the world. They were wise enough to know that a young fae of only 150 years would not be mature enough to protect herself from spiritual dryness.

After reaching her destination she very politely thanked the fae, then looked up at Thaum Deveries.

Smiling as best as she could under the circumstances, she addressed him, "My name is Joyau delaLune and I am here for my internship at De'Gaulle hospital. Have you received my resume? As you know, I am only a novice healer and herbalist, but I need to begin to learn to treat battle wounds.

He looked at her as his faerie left with a small flash of white light. He did not say anything for a long time just sitting there staring at her. Close to an candlemark passed as he just kept his unfixing eyes upon her.

"No I did not get any resume, so please fill out another one." He said, more or less he was testing her to see if she had what it took. In truth he did not really think she did just based off her size alone. This was not with her own race but with being much bigger.

After the fairy left, the Thaum did not speak to her for a long time. Joyau stood there as silently as she could under his stare. A thousand thoughts ran through her mind. She was acutely aware of her blood stained dress, and knew he surely knew what happened outside the door of his office. She was ashamed of herself and her bowed head reflected her despair.

When he thrust an application towards her she seemed to inwardly die a thousand deaths. She knew that her references and transcript had been forwarded to him, but apparently he didn't take the time to read it.

She took the application from him then looked around for a desk to fill it out. Seeing none, she stood there shaking, then, as if she gained a spark of courage she lifted her head and looking straight in his eyes replied, "I am sorry you didn't receive my resume and I will be happy to fill out an application, if you will show me where to sit. I know I am small, however, my grandfather was one-quarter inch smaller than I and he served the Empire with distinction for many years, receiving many distinguished service medals. If I have been chosen by my goddess Diana to follow this path, then she will give me the strength to complete my training. As you know, my race is very mystically inclined and learning magical skills is part of our charism. I do not expect to receive special favors, however, my size is the least of my problems right now."

He just looked at her, not really saying a word just watching her with an grin on his face. "So do you want to learn about healing with your hands or using Arcana." He said as he snap his fingers as an surge of power and strength started flowing in Joyau it was an basic spell of Empower he learned long ago.

Her size would be a problem if she was going to learn to heal with her hands but if she learned Thaumaturgy then he size would not matter but he would not go easy on her, he never went easy on anyone under him for if he did they would fail when they were needed the most.

When the Thaumaturgist talked to Joyau this time she seemed to catch a gleam of humour in his eyes, and then when he smiled at her, it had the effect of calming Joyau a little.
Then he did a spell she had seen often from certain sprites in her village. As she felt it flowing through her she felt empowered to be bold enough to continue on.

"Yes, magic is important in my training. Right now I have been taking lower level healing and herbalism classes for as a healer I feel it is important to use every means available to me to help the sick and wounded. Even if I am not a Master Thaumaturgist yet then I can still heal in many ways. Also, it is important to be able to instruct the medics under me in how to set bones and treat wounds without magic. I may not always be around when someone is hurt."

She waited for a few moments to catch her breath and gather her thoughts, "Even though I am small, and might not have the size to physically set a leg, I could instruct others how to do it. When I prepare potions and administer my medicines, size doesn't matter does it?"

She looked at Thaum Deveries and smiled a little crooked smile, hoping that he understood what she was trying to say.

He once again did not say anything for awhile, he took his time with his thoughts that was clear. "All right, I will see if you can do it, If you can then I will take you, if not then I will not, simple as that." He said as he stood up walking out of the room, she was to follow if she was smart in his view.

He stopped before an young man, nineteen by the looks of an human, the right side of his face right above his jaw line was bleeding steady as small metal fragments were logged in the skin. It looked bad but was rather simple to fix and the odds of death were low unless the person had no idea what they were doing but if they had even the most basic class or lore in healing then they would be fine.

"Well, time to show me what you can do as an medic." He said as he waved to one of the other medics that brought along a small table, it held three small pads, four bandages, a very small clean silver knife, needle and white thread, and an pill.

He just stood there as the young man kept bleeding watching Joyau seeing if she knew what to do and could do it even if she was small.

Joyau was trembling as she looked at the young man and his face wound. She couldn't very well apply a tournaquit as she had been taught and she didn't see any herbs on the tray.

She looked at the Thaum and stated: I have learned certain herbs that will stauch the blood flow. Shepherds purse stops it for one cycle, and dittany that will remove the metal fragments. However I do not see these things on the tray. I have not studied surgery yet. I will put pressure on the wound to stauch the flow of blood. You will see I can easily fly over the patient to do this. To the patient she said, please lie on your side with the wound side up so I can work. She picked up a gauze pad and put pressure on the wound until it stopped bleeding. Then she picked up the knife and noticed her hand was shaking a little with nervousness. She waited until her hand was steady then gently pried each fragment loose and took it out, laying them on the table. She looked around for some water to clean the wound. I need to clean the wound, she said. She took a pad and cleaned it as well as she could. She looked up at the Thaumaturgist. I think he should have a couple of stitches don't you think. I have not had surgery yet, but if you want me to try to stitch it shut I will, but since it is on his face, stitches might leave a scar.Then she chuckled a little even though she was very nervous. Looking at the patient she said, Unless you want a battle scar, she nervously joked.

She picked up the needle and thread and waited to see if she would get instructions on how to sew or not. "Though I don't see any herbs here, if we used dittany on the wound after it is stitched, or all-heale, it will disinfect the wound after it is stitched up, and before I apply the bandage.

She also noticed the pill. I am not familiar with that pill?

OCC: Sorry, better go to the apothacary and stock up.

He just looked at her as the mans face begin to glow an bright white before all the skin was healed. "Its rather simple, there are times when you come to something that is far from your skills, but you show some promise so I will let you stay as an medic but be warned this will not be easy nor will you be the same afterwards." He said before another man came running wearing an white coat.

"Sir its bad we are under attack, people are coming here now that are hurt but they need help near the front lines." He said as he ran off due to the screams of people from outside.

He quickly turn heading back to his office before soon afterwards coming back out with an tiny fae size pack. "You have an job so get to work. See what you can do outside theses walls and here." He said after giving her an small white pack.

Secrets :

"When you are done get back here as soon as you can." He said before he left helping an young child off the ground that had an very bloody knee.

Joyau was still holding the needle and thread when Thaum Deveries moved his hand slightly and the wound healed before her eyes. Joy's mouth fell open, "I have never seen anything like that before," she said. She laid down the needle and thread, then looked at the young man. It seems you will not have a scar. You are fortunate to be treated by a master thaumaturgist.

Joyau was relieved when the Master looked at her and said she could work at the hospital. Then a man in a while coat rushed in and told them of the attack on the city. Thaum Deveries turned to Joy and told her to get ready and go to the aid of the men in the battle. He handed her a medical kit containing all the items she needed.

Joyau was overjoyed at the gift, Thank you so much. I thought I had failed but indeed you are understanding. I know a man who is in charge of a regiment in the city. I will try to find him and attach myself as a medic to his soldiers.

She looked inside the bag and familiarized herself with its contents. Then she put it over her shoulder and flew away to her room to change clothes and go to war.
