Literacy - Vincent [Private]

Timestamp: Mid-Morning, The Fourth Brightening of Optia, Era I of the Celestine Mandate, Era X Post Fractum.

Classroom 2A of the Academy of Lore was situated on the ground floor of the only building that the faculty occupied. When Vincent made his way there, ready for his lessons, the door had been left ajar to invite the new student in.

The classroom looked just liked any other, with a big teacher's desk at one end, and smaller desks and seats for the pupils arranged in the space in the rest of the classroom. Things had been pinned to the walls - in this case, concerning Charismean, since the classroom was primarily used for people who had signed up for reading and writing classes.

Yanda sat behind the desk, reading a textbook casually as she waited for her new student to arrive. She was the epitome of a kindly old schoolteacher. He figure was on the plump side, and she was wearing a very plain and simple cotton blouse, and a dark navy blue woollen skirt that reached past her ankles. Her grey hair had been tied up into a serviceable bun, and her brown eyes turned to look at Vincent as he entered the classroom. A smile appeared on her human features, that invited the Half-Elf into the room. Judging by the colours of her hair and the wrinkles that adorned her face, she was probably in her early sixties.

"Serale! You must be Vincent Stefan? I'm Yanda. Please, take a seat and we can get started."

Vincent entered the classroom, at first he did not even notice the teacher behind the desk. He was to preoccupied taking in the visuals on the walls of the room, however when he did notice her he quickly took his seat in one of the chairs closest to the teacher's desk and began to wait for his lessons to begin.

Yanda gave Vincent a friendly smile as he entered her classroom, and choose a seat wordlessly from the few available before sitting himself down in it. The teacher didn't know whether his silence was from shyness or eagerness to just get on with the lesson and learn the Charismean language, but in any case, she tried to put Vincent at his ease.

"Serale! Now, before I begin, I just want to ask you a couple of things. Just to see what to teach you, you understand! Do you know the alphabet? No matter if you don't, I just don't want to be teaching you something you already know! I don't suppose you're versed in any other languages? Perhaps elvish? I'm just merely being curious here, you understand."

She patted her silver bun in a slightly absent minded manner, whilst waiting for Vincent to answer the questions. Yanda gave him another, friendly smile, just to further put the half-elf at ease for his lessons.

Vincent wished he was versed in the elfish languish it would have been something interesting to learn. However he was not and said as much to the instructor. As for the alphabet he was aware of parts of it but not the whole thing. Vincent could say any one of the alphabets characters but could only pout a few of them on paper. In fact he could only Wright his name.

Finally he replayed. “Well I do know how to speak the alphabet but I can not really Wright it. That’s really one of the reasons I’m here to be able to write more fluently than I can now.” With that Vincent went silent and waited for the teacher to respond.

Yanda smiled in a encouraging fashion when Vincent mentioned that he half-knew about the alphabet. She nodded at her student whilst she gather up some pieces of chalk for use on the big blackboard behind her desk.

"That's good. In that case, it should take us less time than normal to go over the basics of the Charismean alphabet. As you probably know, the alphabet consists of 26 symbols, that we use to make up the language."

Yanda picked up a couple of pieces of parchment, and a quill and ink, and walked the short distance to Vincent's desk before placing them carefully on the desktop.

"Some paper will come in handy, no doubt. You'll want to make some notes... or at least practice drawing the letters as I explain and show them to you."

Walk back towards the blackboard, Yanda then drew the first four letters of the alphabet in a big, bold hand, so Vincent could clearly see how they were formed.

Aa Bb Cc Dd

"Now, as you can see, each letter has two different versions, but we will go into that more later. For now, I want you to try and copy these down while I sound them out to you. The first letter is A. Aiegh. The second is B. Bee. The third is C. See. The fourth is D. Dee. Are the sounds familiar to you?"

Vincent nodded his head as he began to write out the letters. A then B and finally C then proceeded to rewrite the letters a couple of times just to make certain he was correct. With a happy nod toward the teacher Vincent waited for her to continue.

Before continuing on to the next portion of the alphabet, Yanda made her way over to Vincent's desk to see how her student was getting on with copying out the letters correctly, mimicing those she had written on the blackboard. She gave the letters on the parchment a quick look over, then gave Vincent an encouraging nod and smile, indicating she was satisfied with his work so far.

"Alright. I'll go on to the next four letters of the alphabet, then we'll study those eight a little more. Then we'll go on to the next portion."

She took up her stub of chalk once more, and turned her back on Vincent again as she proceeded to write the next three letters on the board, in a big and bold hand again, so her student could see them clearly.

Ee Ff Gg Hh

"These are the next four letters of the alphabet, pronounced eee, eff, gee, and haitch."

Turning back to Vincent, she watched him as he copied down the letters, and was ready to answer any question he might have about the eight currently written on the blackboard.
