Aediles Office
As one of the more important buildings that needed to be rebuilt after the Hurricane, the Aedile's Office had risen from amongst the ruins of the city. It was a long building, made of sandstone like much of the rest of the city with a high, arched doorway leading into the outer courtyard.
In the outer courtyard a small fountain created a soothing melody as the water fell from its lips into the pool below. In the centre of the paved ground; cacti surrounded the edges interspersed with stone benches. It was open to the blue sky and didn't offer much in the way of coolness, but in the evenings and early mornings it was a most pleasant place to sit.
At the far end of the courtyard was the main building, rather squat in construction but it promised relief from the relentless heat of the brightening. A wooden door might have blocked the entrance, but it was mostly left open to try and keep the interior cool. Stepping inside a visitor would see a large desk, covered completely in papers with several stools arranged around it. Three men and two women were inside, all bustling about as they rearranged the chaos of the interior.
Whenever someone new approached the door, whoever happened to be behind the desk would look up, give a harried smile and say, "Serale, how can we help you this brightening?"

Timestamp: 2nd cycle of Imperos
The letter that arrived at the aedile's office was written in a looping, feminine hand, and closed with a wax seal. It was brought by an Imperial courier.

TS = 2nd cycle of Junctior, Fall era XIV PF
The letter that arrived was written in the same hand as the previous one, and delivered in the same manner.
The cheque was enclosed as indicated; other people might have paused at the notion of sending that much money halfway across the Empire without receiving the deed first, but Val knew perfectly well that people weren't particularly inclined to steal from a L'Evienne at the current moment.

15th Immanis, Winter Era XV PF
Val walked into the Aedile's office quietly, but with confidence. She approached the aedile on duty and inclined her head slightly in greeting.
"Serale. I'm Valanthia L'Evienne, newly appointed Imperial Consul to Arakmat." She produced the official commission that Milo had given her and placed it on the counter just in case anyone doubted the veracity of the statement. "His Most Imperial Excellency has asked me to...purchase a consular building. It would need office space for 100 to 150 workers...as well as some living space."
She gave the aedile time to process that request. Val wasn't even certain that such a building existed, but the consulate had been here at one time, and so it was worth a try to ask. Then she added, "I also need to...to hire some employees. Is there a certain place that I should...advertise for workers?"

A young woman served Valanthia on this day, her long raven locks tied back into a neat tail behind her head revealing dangling earrings that shone with the brightenings rays of light. She nodded politely at the request, taking time to inspect the documents presented to her before meeting the new consulate’s gaze. Her voice relied softly in an alto tone, polite and respective, yet refined and confident. “Excuse me Lady L’Evienne, I need to take just one moment to present these to my superior the Senior Aedile. I am sure you do not mind, and fully understand.” She smiled politely giving a brief and shallow bow before scooping up the documents and fading from sight around a corner in the back of the office.
It didn’t take long for the girl to return; in fact it quite quick if one expected a fuss. She quietly placed the documents back in the location Valantia had originally sat them, and presented a small, neatly folded piece of parchment to the woman. It was pure white, except a seal of golden colored wax on the back in the form of a tribal looking sun encircled by a bold rope or entwined pearls. Inside read a letter from the sultan, neatly wrote in long flowing script.
To the newly appointed Consul,
It is my esteemed pleasure to welcome you back into the city of Arakmat, I had this letter presented to the Aedile in hopes of openly inviting you to the palace for a proper meeting had you chosen to not present yourself to me upon arrival. I expect you have presented your position to the Aedile in the hope of acquiring the deed to the previous consulate building. I presently hold said deed, and would be happy to relinquish it to you upon acceptance of my invitation.
Sincerely
Shiek Rafiq Al-Hakaar |

Well, this was somewhat awkward, Val thought as she read the letter. She didn't much care for Shiek Al-Hakaar's tone, nor did she appreciate the intimation that she ought to have "presented herself" to him, given that not only was it her first brightening in the city, but as far as she understood Imperial policies, she outranked him anyway.
Nonetheless, as she rolled the message up again, her face was unreadable and her frustration concealed. Val nodded politely to the aedile on duty. "Thank you for your...your assistance," she said without sarcasm. The other woman was only doing her job, after all. No sense in getting irritated at her.
Val exited the office, collected Umbrosus, and then went off in the direction of the Palace. She was going to have to get this over with, and now was as good a time as any for doing so.
