The Demios Giant Spider Race and Festival (Open to All, Start Here!)

Spring, Era XXII
“Bruiser!”

“Spiderella!”

“BRUISER!” shouted the first child, his face reddening.

“SPI. DER. EL. LAAAAAA!” proclaimed his smaller sister as she darted out a chubby hand to tug the hood of his costume over his eyes. She whooped and ran off through the crowded street, the eight fabric legs of her own arachnid disguise gaily bouncing along as the boy gave chase.

It seemed the whole island was in attendance for this much-anticipated revival of the old festival. Bright pennants snapped over the rows of merchant and artisan tents. Vendors hawked their food, drink, and wares. One educational display of a stuffed and preserved giant spider was keeping its owner busy as he attempted to both deliver his complicated and difficult to hear lecture on the species while also interjecting dire threats against curious hands who reached out to sneak a touch of a great hairy leg.

Musicians wandered the festival, the heartfelt strumming of a lute and sonorous singing of a deep voice to one side blending into the cadence of drummers set up across the way, and polyrhythmic bells and clinks of finger cymbals echoing from a troupe of dancers beyond that. Near-feral packs of small children waved their paper cones of spun sugar “spider silk,” their cheeks and hands hopelessly sticky, their behavior crazed by too much sugar and freedom. Many wore variants of homesewn spider costumes, which had noticeably increased in popularity this era. There were a few adults, too, who wore webbed-style eye masks or face paint as a nod to the children’s tradition, and more would follow suit as the evening cooled and the festival became more... inebriated.

But for now, it was a lovely afternoon, full of things to see and do and eat. At one end, some enterprising fellows had set up a short obstacle course and were gleefully challenging passerbys to go through it. The catch was that contestants had to wear their specially-constructed “spider vision” goggles. The bumbling results had attracted a small but vocal crowd, who called out encouragement and help, or wrong directions, to the amusement of all.

At another part of the festival, a Tangled Web Maze had been constructed and much bragging had been heard over the improvements this era. For instance, one could no longer solve the maze in minutes simply by jumping up and down to sneak peeks over the top, which was cheating, and anyways, the web design was high enough this era to keep a captive audience entertained for quite some time. Perhaps longer than they wished! Presently, the web maze was mostly being utilized by youths looking for a place to drink, but everyone knew things could get a little, ah, weird in there after dark.

The main event, of course, was the Giant Spider Race, scheduled to take place a candlemark before dusk. Rumor had it that there was still time to register as a rider. A woman on a central raised stage was exhorting the crowd to buy their tickets now, now, now. This could be done at the booth next to the stage, where several harried volunteers were taking down names, information, and accepting monetary bribes payments for legitimate services.

Another hand-painted sign encouraged junior spider jockeys to sign up for the Spiderling Scatter, a non-riding event wherein children would release baby spiders onto a track and encourage theirs to be the first across the finish line. This was scheduled to take place right before the main race and registration was open.

What a beautiful brightening to celebrate a beautiful and misunderstood creature!

Secrets :
???

Welcome to the Era XXII Demios Giant Spider Race and Festival, where fun is mandatory!

As your friendly eight-legged peer mod, may I invite you to…
  • register to ride a giant spider for the race, to win prizes and glory, and to totally touch a giant spider
  • place a bet on the race (coming soon! need our riders first!)
  • register your kids for the Spiderling Scatter, or if you happen to be a small race PC, try to pass as one to steal the gold prize
  • buy some stuff
  • or just walk around, touching stuff and not buying. FINE.
  • or, have your own vendor tent
  • check out the obstacle course
  • check out a fellow pc in the web (of loooove) maze
  • have fun
  • meet people
  • … or cause some trouble

General festival stuff and race registration goes here. Feel free to socialize and interact in this thread. You’re also welcome to start separate threads using [Giant Spider Festival] as the beginning tag, if you’d like. The races will be organized in a separate thread when we get to that point, and I'll start a thread for official bets once we have our riders and mounts coordinated.

There is no limit for the number of PCs who can be involved here. Please note that I’m not a big believer in posting order; I’ll just pop in as needed for this beginning thread. Post early, post often, post as much as you'd like!

Remember, giant spiders are fun for the whole family! Have an excellent time.

Barthelme was there. Obviously! Because giant spiders.

Even without the shifting ways of the Dreamscape, there would be ample grist for the nightmare mill in a festival like this one. But with the changes in the nature of Dream Possession, there was an entirely new sort of opportunity here. Those who traveled the Dreamscape, now, gathered power by harvesting relevant memories from the physical world to Invoke while crafting their dreams or nightmares. And since Barthelme (or rather, Bithisarea) just so happened to have a daughter who was about 90% spider, collecting memories about riding giant spiders had an obvious utility.

"And so if there was a giant snake riding festival, I'd be the one having to give you piggy back rides?" Usira asked. "Yeah, no thanks!"

Just as well for you, then, that there isn't.

Anyway, Barthelme was off to go sign up as a spider rider in the giant spider race.

Giant spiders and people riding them. She was a bit curious as to how that would look. Ironically Rowan might qualify as a spider jockey, but she did not care to tempt fate and mount one. She was happy enough to let other people do it. Besides, Mortimer was off doing..whatever it is he did when she was not watching.

So, having some free time to herself, it seemed like a good idea, after all, how often did a person get to see people mounted on the backs of huge bugs..or however you wanted to class spiders.

In the mean while she was wondering the grounds and taking in the sights. Watching people debate the performance of this spider or that one.

It just so happened that while Rowan, and Mortimer were visiting Demios there happened to be a resurrection of the much beloved Giant Spider Festival, which included a race. There was never really a question on whether or not he was going to enter, but it was more a matter of him containing his excitement, like one of the sugar enriched children.

Making his way over to the registration tent where the volunteers were taking names for the big event, Mortimer greeted them with a cheery smile. "Serale, my name is Mortimer Blythe, and I would like to register for the amazing Giant Spider Race." He watched with glee as they scrawled his name down on the registrar, and then he thanked them, taking off into the crowd to look for the face painting tent. Mortimer wanted to get a creepy, crawly spider painted on his entire face.

“Neeeext!” called out a young woman who stood at the left side of the ticketing booth.

Barthelme’s turn!

“Welcometothespringtwennytwogiantspiderrrracean’fe stival,” she greeted for the hundreth time this brightening. She was pleasant enough, or had been at the start, but her habit of running her fingers in her hair when she was stressed had elevated her dark, curly mop to alarming, admirable heights. She tugged at her hair again as if on cue.

“Whacannado f’ya?” She listened poorly and repeatedly interrupted his reply. “Rider. Gotcha. Name?- Mmm hmm, spell that, waaaaiiit waitwaitwait. Is that t-h-e-l or l-e? M or n? Mmm hmm, mmm hmm. Gotcha.” She followed this with startlingly accurate pronouncements about his height and weight.

“Alright, gotcha. One moment.”

She consulted at a table just behind her, then returned. “Seems yagottachoice ‘tween ridin’ Bonecrusher or Lucky Seven. What’llitbe?”

* * *

The man beside her was engaged in extended pleasant conversation with the woman asking him questions about the spiders and seemed utterly unconcerned about the long line forming behind her, where Mortimer stood at third place behind a remarkably tall gentleman. Or perhaps he had a most profound and careful concern for every individual during that individual’s turn. Time would tell, but then again, time could be such a liar.

The woman departed and the registrar renewed his welcome speech to the absurdly tall man, seeming to ask a rather high number of questions. He had above average patience. Hopefully Mortimer possessed the same lofty attribute as the conversation went on in raised voices.

“...never seen you around here before.”

“No, no- yes, I’m from here,” came the muffled voice of the tall man, who was wearing an unseasonably long cloak with the hood up and the front closures all hooked together.

The man behind the booth put a hand up and shook his head gently as the frantic volunteer beside him rushed to the central table behind them again. “All I’m saying, friend, is that folks would remember a big, strong fellow like you. But perhaps we have a spider to suit you, if Bruiser’s not yet claimed, that is.”

There was an indistinct noise of excitement from the man’s middle. After a beat, he moved one short arm to press a small hand against his midsection.

“Oh. My belly. It must have been the prawns.”

The polite and pleasant man behind the counter pretended not to notice. “Your name, mister…?”

“Dad!” said the tall fellow. “I mean- quit it-” His upset stomach had whispered something that sounded like you stupid idiot, which in itself was not a very bright statement.

“I’m Mr. Daaadman,” the tall man assured him, drawing out the vowel. “And I definitely for sure want to ride Bruiser. Bruiser is awesome!”

“Very good, sir!” pronounced the registrar. He went to the back table, where he took his time, then returned with a long roll of parchment and a quill that had been dipped in ink. He held the quill up to Mr. Dadman.

“If you’ll just please sign hereee- AHHH HAAA!” the previously mild man shouted as he used this chance to leap over the table and tackle the man, who was promptly cut in half. Or, more accurately, who fell apart into three pieces because he was actually three boys, two stacked on shoulders. They shouted and laughed and avoided his attempts to grab their arms.

“Damned kids! For the last time, giant spiders are for real adults!” he shouted as they did their own impression of a Spiderling Scatter, all maniacal, sugar-laced laughter and flapping cloak.

Huffing for breath, he waved Mortimer up to the table as he walked himself back to the other side of it.

"Welcome to the Era Twenty Two Giant Spider Race and Festival, friend," he greeted him between deep breaths, taking a moment to press his hands upon his knees before standing back up.

"They are amazing creatures, aren't they?" At least his pathologically pleasant attitude hadn't been spoiled. "And would that be Blythe with an i or an e...?"

There were some politely worded questions about his height, weight, and wealth health, then the man went to the table and came back again.

"I am so pleased to inform you that you have a choice between our largest specimens, on account of your being so tall. Wouldn't want those feet dragging!" The man laughed as if he'd actually been funny.

"Now, which would you prefer? We have Bruiser, upon whom childhood dreams are inexplicably fixated, and Mandy Bowls is still available, too. Allow me to assure you that all of our spiders receive the greatest care and attention, and have been chosen for their strength, speed, and temperament."

* * *

Some kids running with a cloak over their heads nearly bowled Rowan over, but parted at the last moment so that she was merely whipped a bit by the flapping edge of a runaway garment. What the feth was that?

The excitement of the festival was all around Rowan as she drank in the sights and sounds. The possibilities! The opportunities!

Golash was swinging his club right to left and back again. His body bleeding all over, gashes from claws, puncture wounds in the pattern of teeth, slice marks from where swords had hacked at him. A deep sense of anxiety and desperateness consumed his very being as he clubbed desperately at Xet. As pulse weapons blasted soil into his face and shockwaves sent through his body, he pressed on throwing and kicking Xet, finding no shortage of them to hurl. As he found himself in a disconcerting duel with two Xetan warriors, he suddenly looked up and saw the maw of a gargantuan worm swallowing him. As it swallowed him he heard the horrifying screaming of the villagers he failed to save that day.

Flash!

Golash woke up, the lecture on spiders was interesting at first, but as the lecture on giant spiders went on it seemed the giant dozed off as he leaned on a tree nearby the lecturer. His breathing slightly elevated and sweating a bit. The giant had yet told anyone about his experience on the battle field. He had actually hoped this vacation in Demios would help, but the nightmares still reliably visited him. Igrainne had run off somewhere, something about seeing a workshop and visiting the Malinconicos. For now it seemed, he was back on his own again.

He casually pulled away from the lecturer and headed towards the spider race registration. Unsure, of why exactly he bothered. He would try to enter the race knowing, it was highly likely they did not have a giant spider large enough to carry him let alone sustain a competitive race. However, he would see what he could do. Golash then introduced himself "greetings, my name is Golash and I would like to register for the race."

This festival was a surprise for Diamea, she didn't know nor what it was or that would be during her time on the island. She ended up while coming back from one of Hay'aan dancig lessons and she decided to take some time to wander about and see what was the subject of this festival.

At first she didn't believe at her eyes: giant spider, these were the main attraction of all the festival, not spider, giant spider. And there were a race too to be done aboard giant spider.

"Why not?... No, bad idea..." she thought with a grin; she took her time, wandering around, listening to the musicians and finding something to eat and to drink, but that insane thought was continuing to surface.

Insects didn't make her unconfortable, but this... this were giant spider, how could she think of riding one? No way, when thoughts continued to surface in her mind, there was no way out.

"Ehm, serale... I'd like to register for the Giant Spider Race..." she said approaching one of the volunters at the main stage.

Rhys was a bold person, or at least she'd like to think. Impulsive, perhaps, and maybe overly confident, but certainly open-minded and willing to try new things.

Spiders, though? Giant spiders? The half elf might be driven to ride one - should her life depend on it. For a woman who had chosen such a dangerous profession, she was certainly timid about the arachnids. She was rather ashamed of her aversion to at least giving it a try, but she'd determined she'd rather stick with horses.

Still, the festival was not around every day, and while she was a tourist in Demios, it seemed a great shame to not attend. She had been nursing some cuts and a swollen wrist for a while after the fightsthis IS after, right?, and she needed the fresh air anyway. She smiled at the children that swept by her, remembering a time she had been that rambunctious kid with the sticky face.

For the time being she was content to meander and take in the sights, simply waiting for when the bets would open for the races. She had no problem watching - it was touching the beasts that she wasn't too keen on trying.

ooc@GolashAny time I see a PC commenting about having nightmares, my Twisted senses start tingling.:p

Not so long ago, the ticket booth lady's rapidfire recital of her oft-repeated greeting would have thrown Barthelme for a loop. Used to be his addled brain had trouble even processing normal-speed conversations. However, since becoming a Mystic, and a Twisted, he had... stabilized, in some ways. He had acquired filters that made the multiverse a far easier place to comprehend, which in turn freed up brain space for the little things, like understanding what someone was saying the first time around. And in any case, one of his co-workers at the asylum in Arkdün had a similar habit of speaking without bothering to add the little pauses between words.

"B-a-r-t-h-e-l-m-e," he clarified patiently. And raised his eyebrows at having his height and weight guessed with such accuracy.

Or was it a guess? Could it be that this otherwise almost-normal seeming woman was, in fact, a monster from the Overthere... peering into his innermost thoughts with her terrifying, all-seeing third eye? Quite possibly so! It would certainly explain the hair, anyway. But, again, Otherlings walking around in flesh-puppets was nowhere near as shocking to see as it had been for Barthelme in brightenings gone by. So he more or less shrugged the matter off. Though even now he couldn't quite restrain a shudder when the tall fellow nearby abruptly dissolved into three hideous, imp-like apparitions and then vanished into the crowd. Most eerie.

"I suppose I would prefer... Bonecrusher," Barthelme said, to the complete surprise of absolutely no one who knew he was a Twisted.

"Sounds better than that 'Mandy Bowels' over there, anyway!"

I believe the name was "Mandy Bowls," Usira. A pun on mandibles, you see.

"Oh! Well, sure. I guess that makes more sense than, uh, the other thing."

Golash

The elderly registrar cleared his throat and drummed his knobby fingers against the table, desperately wishing he had papers to shuffle or somewhere else to be. He was getting too old for this business, which was precisely what his wife had said just this morning, so he obviously couldn’t admit to it.

“Ah…” He opened his mouth and closed it again, staring up, waaaay up, at the giant. “You would like to… register? For the race? … As a rider?”

His lips pressed in a thin line which was just as well, since he was either having a stroke or having a great deal of difficulty with answering the giant’s request.

“Wait here.” He went off to find someone else to take the blame.

While Golash waited, he was blocking the entire table from the rest of those who waited in line. The other two volunteers, a frizzy-haired woman and a man whose smile seemed permanently pasted, saw their chance for a break and disappeared. The elderly man was consulting with two people at the central table, where the remaining spiders were being matched with likely riders. Bits of argument floated up to Golash as the three bent together, the occasional head popping up to peep at him.

“-tell him that we simply-”

“-look at the size of-”

“-happen to value my life!”

The other two pretty much shoved the man back towards Golash. He was flushed red right to the pink circle of scalp ringed by carefully combed gray hair that the giant was looking down upon, and beads of sweat dripped into his enormous eyebrows.

“Well, then. Ahem. Sir, please understand that these are giant spiders. They are quite large, enormous, monstrous really, in comparison to spiders of a more, ah, average size,” he carefully enunciated, ringing his hands.

“And you yourself are, of course, a giant, and giants being- well, bigger than persons of a more average size… ah, all this is to say, sir, that these spiders will not seem quite so impressive to you, I think.”

He wiped at his forehead and avoided eye contact, which was pretty easy to do when you were talking to someone who was fifteen feet tall.

“Regretfully, there are no giant spiders large enough to carry you, except in our nightmares, haha… ha… oh, dear, now that’s a terrible thought!” he fretted.

“Please accept complimentary admission to the race, with our most sincere apologies, and this token for fifty percent off at Morty's Tattoo Parlor, good through the end of Ulyris.” He held up the token and contemplated faking his own death right here and now, on the off chance that a giant wouldn’t try to kill a dead man.

Diamea was stuckJust kidding. Kinda. She is basically staring at a big ol' giant butt right now. Reply coming in a bit to the rest of you! :-) behind the giant for now.

Spiders. Lots of them. And big ones!

This was exciting for a druidess.

Spiders!

There was no shortage of things to do in the festival. A web maze, the spider race, candy treats, obstacle courses, vendors, and more... and on top of that some of her friends would be here, wouldn't they? Barthelme had come to see the spider festival, and Rowan was checking it out too. And Lyna thought she may have seen a few people around who'd been in the nasty illegal fight club, as well.

What Lyna wanted first and foremost was a chance to meet one of the spiders though. She had an animal-communication spell in mind that she really wanted to try with one of the arachnids, to see what it had to 'say'.

That aside though, she found her way to the booth and asked about registering. When she got there... when the big ol' giant butt was out of the way (that is, if it was currently in the way now)... "Vedui', erm... could I participate in the race? My name's Lyna." She expected if she got into the race she'd get a smaller spider, being a kinda small person.

Mortimer considered his choice of spiders to ride, Bruiser of Mandy Bowls. Being that he himself was battered, and bruised, not to mention the cuts, from the fighting pits, he decided the best course of action would be to take the one with the more intimidating sounding name. "I will definitely be taking Bruiser then, if he is as you say childhood dreams are fixated."

And why not, Mortimer felt like a child having fun at the festival, why not fixate a dream on a majestic arachnid by the name of Bruiser. Now where to find that face painting booth, and maybe some of that spider's silk spun sugar. That would give him the edge he needed to win the race, besides if it was good enough for the kids, it must be good enough for him.

Maybe latter he would catch up with Rowan, but for now it was all about sticky web, high flying fun.

Mason traveled through the festivities and looked around chucking at the children playing tag and chasing one another wearing silly spider themed costumes. He had a grin on his face he enjoyed the socialization and the crowd this was definitely new to him. He purchased a few concessions some sort of barbequed sausage on a stick. Stepping up to the ticket vendor he contemplated what he was going to want to do. He couldn't really ride a horse much less a spider so he most likely was not going to race one but a bet? He would wait till every one was registered before he would make any guess who was to win but he liked the druid for the moment. Something about nature lovers and their animals and all.

Well besides purchasing a ticket and looking around he couldn't afford to do much else so he began to wander here and there just watching things.

(Tag any one?)

Golash nodded, still coming down from the rush invoked by his nightmare "I see." He stood there uncomfortably for a just a few moments , then with a controlled low tone and very clear voice stated the following:

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want from the races. If you are looking for a bribe I can tell you I won't pay the money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career of adventuring and contract work. Skills that make me worse than spider nightmares for people like you. If you let me in the race now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will step on you."

The giant let that stew in their minds a bit "give me the smallest giant spider you have that would still be allowed in the race and that will be fine." Golash then folded his arms and gave a very un-jolly green giant stare.
