Annael was about to describe the sound coming from the other side of the door when it became clear that it was going to get loud enough for all to hear, he did not bother. He would move aside to allow Klue a clear space to work in should he need it and held his bow at the ready, should any more footsteps come from up or down the hall.

In the time it took Klue to look at the door and work out ho to open it, Annael would look to use the crystal that Hay'aan had lent him to 'record' the insectoid sounds he had heard when he first cast his spell, just in case it became relevant. Once done, he handed the crystal back to Hay'aan with a nod of thanks.

Klue inserted the oddly shaped key into the panel beside the door. It fit nicely, just as expected. But instead of the doors sliding open, the only response was the blinking away of one of the lights on the panel. Frowning, the gadgeteer pressed first the blinking light to see if it gave way like a button or switch would. And if nothing happened then he'd try the other one.

What seemed more interesting, was that as they stood there, he began to hear a grinding but rhythmic seeming mechanical sound, and it seemed to be getting closer. Both to the door, and to them. It seemed obvious that this was no ordinary room. It struck Klue that he'd heard something vaguely similar to this before. Countless times in fact, from one of own creations back on Demios. Or rather, under it.

With that in mind, whether fiddling with the flashing light yielded any success or not...or should the other key that Hay'aan had brought do the trick, or no, Klue shifted aside with his firearm primed and readied in his hand,to ensure that once the door opened, neither he or any of the others were standing right in front of it.

The door did not respond the way that she had hoped it would by, basically, opening. But something was happening no doubting. There was the sound of grinding and some sort of mechanical happening. She had no idea what that might be, what the noise might signify was happening, but that was fine because Klue would know what was to be known there.

So, other than handing Klue the second key if he needed it and taking the Serewood crystal from Annael with a smile, Hay'aan kept watch up and down the corridor, projectile weapon at the ready should it be needed and, at Klue's urging, not standing in front of the door whilst he worked it out.

The mechanical noise continued. It had only started to grow louder when Klue had put the octagonal key in. The light now continued to glow red. Attempts to depress it, or the other button yielded nothing. The sound grew louder, and louder. Three looked at no one, but simply stared at the door...waiting.

They all stood there, preparing for anything...waiting.

Patisshhh!!!

Like the sound of steam leaving a covered pot or kettle...and loud.

The doors began to come open in the center. The red light went off.

When the doors parted they revealed an empty room. A small room. It was non descript, about 8 feet deep, 8 feet across, 15 feet tall, and appeared to made from a different material from the corridor walls. There was a hatch up top of it. On the inner wall, just adjacent to the door, was a panel with five buttons on it. The last of these buttons was presently green.

Carriingg!!

The doors attempted to close again on their own, but they seemed to stop, as if sensing Three, who stood in the doorway between the hall and the inner "room". the doors then went back in.

A moment later.

Carrrrinnngg!!!

The doors attempted to do the same thing again.

With his original spell still active, for now, Annael could once more hear the faint sounds of insectoid conversation coming from the "T" hall way area...

Annael listened, waiting with baited breath as the doors opened to reveal... nothing, but a small box-cubord. He would not disguise his confusion as he looked to his companions, the entire concept of an 'elevator' far outside his understanding of the world.

He was not long to have the chance to ponder over it though as the sound of footsteps echoed out again. "Move out of the doorway." He whispered to Three quietly. He did not trust that room, as it did not seem like the creatures that had been in there previously had simply been standing in there before they had came out and met with thier unpleasant demise. Also, the sound while the doors were close made him concerned about exactly what happens when the door closed. All the being so, he continued quickly to whisper. "Footsteps." He pointed in the direction of the sound and would gesture to the stairwell again. At least in there they had somewhere to run.

Unless his fellows suggested otherwise, he'd go with them into the stairwell corridor to wait for the footsteps to pass and then move on from there. Keeping his bow up and ready should they not simply pass the stairwell this time.

As the mechanical noise grew louder even through the sealed door, Klue realized that he had in fact heard something very like it before. So similar in fact that even after all of his efforts, save fitting the key into position, seemed to yield very little else, he took a step back from the door, raised his weapon and made sure he was ready to fire, should the door suddenly open and something, or someone be waiting for them on the other side.

Then as he'd begun to suspect, the doors slid open to reveal what he'd come to believe already might just be a device eerily like the chair lift that he and his crew had installed onto his mechanized rail system, beneath his workshop at the Paedia....some eras ago. A much advanced, exceedingly more wondrous version to be sure. The doors even seemed to be equipped with some sort of sensor that prevented them shutting while someone or something remained in their path. Considering that even his own creation was accessed through a wall that slid away by mechanical means, the similarities were too many to assume that it was anything else.

Under any other circumstances he'd have insisted on taking his time to examine the thing to see how it worked; how differently from his own creation, and just to make sure that it was what he believed it to be. Fascinating. But already he'd realized that if they were to step inside and somehow travel to another level, the doors could as easily open up to yet a second corridor filled to the brim with any number of xet and their minions who were unlikely to take kindly to a quartet of infiltrators stepping off of their lift. No. "I think it's a lift, like my rail system. But better to take the stairs," Klue whispered, and managed to sound somewhat disappointed not to opt for the other.

He said it at almost the same time that Annael suggested that Three step back out of the threshold, and strains of foreign sounding conversation drifted their way. Annael was right, someone was coming, and their green haired friend had the right idea. The stairwell. Wherever they were to go once the current risk of discovery had passed, better to conceal themselves there for now. With that in mind, he glanced at Hay'aan and Three, nodded towards the stairwell and slipped in behind Annael.

The doors slid open and it reminded her of the time that Klue had taken her on a tour of the Paedia - at least his part of it, and those sliding doors which had led to the mechanised rail. It was amazing, that place, and this place, these doors and that room reminded her of it, but she glanced at Klue to make sure that she was not wrong. And for all that this place was terrifying, that she was annoyed and frustrated and more than a little bit scared, she could not help but bite back a smile at his words after he had confirmed her suspicion of what it was 'Better to take the stairs'. He was disappointed and, if she knew her husband one jot he wanted to be in there checking it out and working out what button did what, how it linked and so on.

But he glanced back at her and Three, nodded to the stairwell and he slipped in there. Hay'aan had no intention whatsoever of being the last person out in the corridor and so, without a word, she followed her husband and her friend quickly. Slipping through the doorway and into the stairwell she glanced at Klue to make sure that the disappointment of all that lovely technology wasn't too much for him and then she listened, standing still and trying her best to breathe as quietly as possible.

After all, as much as Three was a killing machine, she was the only one out of all of them that was and this was a recon mission. Thus far, Hay'aan considered, they had not done a lot of recon and they should really be getting on with it. She felt personally quite responsible for the lack of recon and a sense of some disappointment in herself that she had so few drawings. That was, after all, her skill here. So let this lot of clacking aliens go past and see where they were then, she considered. They needed to move forward and get serious with this stuff. Cursing herself for arguing unnecessarily she waited to see what it was that would happen now.

Three stepped out of the way of the elevator, but when Annael announced there were conversations coming down the hall adjoining their own, everyone made a quick dash for the hinged door beside them. They all bolted in to the stairwell, the light low, as it was before. Annael's hearing would indicate the conversation getting a little louder, but then fading off again. Once more Three was at the door, peeking out through the narrowest of cracks. She turned back to Klue, Hay'aan, and the elf.

"Not there. Must have gone down the other end of the hall."
she said. The assassin then moved from the door, and began to go up the stairs. She stopped about four steps up, and looked down at the others.

"Well come on. If we aren't gonna go in that lift thing, then we should go up the stairs. I am guessing anything important is probably further up."
she said. With that she began once more to go up the stairwell, expecting the others to follow...

oocplease remember, that an NPC, such as Three, can do as she wishes, but it does not mean you have to follow. I do not want you all to feel like I am linearly leading you all down a particular path.

And so it seemed that Three had unilaterally decided to take the group up the stairs. Annael turned with a look of utter exasperation to his two friends. There were a range of choices, some simple, some not, but wondering around the ship aimlessly was not a plan.

"No, we find out what there is down here first before leaving it behind. It will only get more crowded up there, not less and we can still explore that hatch in the 'lift' once we are clear of this level." His words were direct and cool. He was not going to accept any discussion from Three, who had given up any right Annael felt she had to make group decisions long ago, but Hay'aan and Klue were of course a completely different matter and his look to them would be one of seeking confirmation that they agreed.

If Klue was doing the choosing, then no, they weren't going to go anywhere in that lift. At least not without some idea of exactly where it went. "I'd prefer not to ride blind in the thing," he whispered to the others once the corridor seemed clear again. "just to have the door blindly open up to a handful of xet waiting to get on." But should they travel up the stairs to another level? Or should they remain where they were and continue to explore this one?

Important was relative. So was crowded, as Annael had suggested. The next floor up could in fact be more populated than this one. Or it could be dramatically less so. Six of one, a half dozen of the other. "Wait," Klue said to Three as he considered Annael's suggestion and glanced at Hay'aan. "If part of the reason we're here on what amounts to a flying fortress is to undermine its operations, sabotage it, then instead of wandering aimlessly, we need to start thinking more...what's the best way to go about it. Inside and out, it's said to be fashioned like an elliptical wasp's nest."

It seemed logical, he added, that the critical operating and command elements would be located nearer the center, and higher up, while the lower ranked individuals and thralls would populate the lower levels in larger numbers. It made some sense, considering the number of saurids they'd stumbled across. They were considered to be slaves among the xet...even food for them. If he was to design a mechanized flying ship, he whispered, he'd locate its engines in the belly for the most part. Or at least at the lower levels, while he'd place the command and and more critical controls higher up, and centralized for better protection. As for weaponry, it made more sense to locate it nearer the perimeter.

"I think the thing to do is to remain on this floor for now, but work our way closer to the center, and then systematically move up from there." He looked to Hay'aan then to see what she thought, but then also suggested. "I think it might be smart to destroy or get rid of those things you pulled off the saurids. They're thralls...dispensable in the scheme of things, I can't imagine anything they'd be used for but control devices or translators...or maybe a means for the xet to keep track of their underlings." It was the last part, that got Klue thinking.

Just in case they were inadvertently attracting more unwanted attention by carrying the things around, his suggestion would be that one of them should quickly carry the devices up several flights of stairs, conceal them in the dark shadows of the landing, and then return again. They could venture back out into the corridor then, and go on their way. If by chance the things were a way for the xet to keep track of their thralls, and those thralls were now thought to have gone missing or gone rogue...then planting those devices elsewhere might, in addition to creating confusion for their enemies, cut down on the number of patrols they seemed to be meeting up with in the corridor. So far as Klue was concerned, it couldn't hurt.

Not riding in the lift made perfect sense to her. Especially since they were in a place where, if they were discovered then presumably the Xet could control the lift and, if they were in it, kill them remotely. No thanks. Klue told Three to wait, and then looked at her after Annael had spoken. She met her husband's gaze quietly and nodded her head, ever so slightly. His skill set meant that he understood this place better than any of them, in truth. Because he had the knowledge of how he would build things mixed with the military experience of how that worked. Her slight smile told him what she felt about what he said and she did not interrupt, just listened. That she was proud of him went without saying, but there was no doubting the very basic fact. He was making sense. They had to be smarter than this, and she *knew* that, but had not fully understood how to be. But this made sense and would work.

"Unsurprisingly, I'm with him" she whispered, quietly, to Annael and Three (if Three had indeed stopped when Klue said wait). "If we are here to find out, to record and to sabotage, then it makes sense. We can assume that the edge of the vessel is the wall we appeared against and if it is indeed elliptical, then we have a direction which is the center." Nodding, she pictured it in her mind and had a clear image that she felt might be helpful, in fact, if they needed to pick a direction or such. Yes. That made sense. The engines first, and then on to other aspects. "If we can sabotage the engines, then not only can we learn a lot whilst doing it, we can redirect their forces to fixing it. But we need to be quick, and efficient" After all, whilst they worked on that, the weapons were still funcitoning. Still, if they could get this done well, it might turn a tide and they just didn't know so it was best to pick a target.

Nodding her head in agreement, she looked at Annael and Three to see what they thought of it and then, she looked down at the silk hankerchief in her hand, wherein were wrapped the two devices. She could only agree, understanding his thought process and considering that he was probably right. "I'll do that. Small, quick and quiet I can do" she said, with a brief reassuring smile to Klue and then, unless there was something else said she would very quickly and quietly run up the stairs, keeping in the darkness and would drop one of the things four floors up and the other three floors up, not leaving the stairwells and not coming out of the shadows, but she couldn't quite resist the urge to check that the stairs did, in fact, go up five flights. But that was easily done presumably, by the simple expedient of looking up.

If that all worked out, and she was able to do that, then she would make her way down and rejoin her companions as they got ready to go again, but this time she felt that they were doing so with a renewed sense of purpose and, once back into the corridor, towards the T junction which they should check both ways before heading in the direction, roughly, of the center if they were able to. She would, of course, continue to map things as they went.

Three stood on the stairs, and simply stared as Annael told her they were not following. Then Klue started in, and Hay'aan followed. The assassin's expression did not waiver...she did not flinch. She came back down the stairs, and came up to the trio.

"Let me know when you need me."
she said coolly. She then moved to the hinged doorway once more and waited.

Hay'aan, acting on Klue's suggestion, took the small clawed items and quickly moved up the stairs.

One full flight, a landing and a door with a symbol above it.

Then to the next floor, and the same thing, but the symbol was,

Then up another floor, the symbol above the door was,

And then finally up to the top, where she laid the first item, the symbol above the door was,

And the door was different then the others...as if reinforced, and with a panel box next to it. The box had what appeared to be an imprint of an insectoid like appendage, a hand if you will, in the middle.

Then back down to the 4th floor, and laid the second clawed item on the landing, and then...then back down to the group. It was then that Hay'aan noticed a symbol above the door they were all about to exit out of...

The decision seemed to be made that now they would head out, and up towards the "T" section of the hallways. Three, despite her irritation with it all, never let on, and simply moved out through the door. She moved a little ahead, then motioned for the others to follow. In a matter of moments, they were all stood against the wall, about to enter the intersection. Three edged her head just out past the wall, and looked up and down. She motioned for each of the others to do so. It was at that time that Annael noticed that his hearing enhancement began to fade.

In one direction, left at the "T", the hall went a considerable length, and then seemed to go down, as if a ramp took it lower in elevation. At the far end of it there was an opening, but not much else could be seen from this distance.

In the other direction, to the right, the hallway went about 20 yards, and ended in a door, similar to the storage room door in appearance, but with a panel next to it. It had two glass button like coverings, one above, and one below, what appeared to be another place for a key...but this one had only SIX sides.

Above the door were the following symbols, as if forming a word...

Three looked up and down the hall once more, then after the group had a chance to do the same, she turned to them, and her expression read... "What now?"

She made her way up the stairs as quickly and efficiently as she could, but she saw the symbols and Hay'aan knew that she had to make sure that she copied them, accurately and effectively. She pulled a piece of parchment and started to sketch, quickly and with the kind of attention to detail that was typical of her and her work. Making sure to record them each carefully Hay'aan was meticulous in making sure that the details were right. Then, labelling it carefully as Sketch B she made a detailed sketch of the handprint-thing, noting the measurements as much as was possible without touching it. When she got back down the stairs, after dropping off the two rectangular things, she handed the parchment to Klue, motioning to Annael and Three to see. When she spotted the symbol on this side of the door they were behind, she pursed her lips in displeasure at herself for not having spotted it before and she took the parchment back adding in the final symbol . She looked at the handprint and glanced at Three "Did the thing you killed have hands like that?" she whispered. She thought that the Xet were all different shapes and sizes, so they would need to keep an eye out for something with arms like that and then... well, divest it of it's arm or knock it cold or something. She was fairly sure Three could think of some unique and quite deadly way of doing that.

But then, they were on the move again and Hay'aan was careful to meticulously map where they were and where they could see. She added in details about the 8 sided and 6 sided key and when faced with symbols, she once again noted them so that they could begin to maybe translate.

The dot at the end of that word or phrase or sentence, she pointed to and then she pointed to the same symbol on the doors. Holding up one finger, to illustrate that that bit at least, seemed to be one. The strange, five sided shape above the first vertical line she also pointed to and gestured to where the door was that required a six sided key - maybe there were keys with all sorts of numbers of sides, she wondered, and she shrugged as she considered it.

They could not go right, for that way required a key they did not have (she did check the one she'd picked up just in case). So she nodded her head to the left with a questioning glance at Klue, then at Annael and Three. Right wasn't an option, so left seemed to be it, she shrugged and waited to see what Klue thought about it.

ooc Shal, I hope I've gotten the details right from your description - if I've gotten anything wrong, please just let me know and I'll happily edit, of course!

Hay'aan couldn't have returned too soon, so far as Klue was concerned. Any amount of time that any of them spent outside anyone else's sight, was entirely too much. It was as important to know where each member of their team was and what they were doing, as it was to know where the enemy was. For the moment, he thought when she finally came back down the stairs, they were doing well in the first case. But not quite as well in the second, considering the number of times they'd had to duck and take cover, or eliminate their enemies that had stumbled upon them by happenstance.

He took the drawings she handed him, studied them in the dim light of the stairwell and made sure that Annael and Three could also see clearly. It seemed apparent that most of the symbols thus far, indicated a corresponding level. And it also seemed that if they'd wanted to get through the doors at the top, they'd need a hand that needn't necessarily be attached to its owner. It was a good question Hay'aan had asked, and in fact Klue had been under the impression that not all xet were created equal, therefore their hands might be different, one from the other.

And then they were back in the corridor, trailing after Three. While he'd had the time, Klue had checked his firearm, making sure it was properly primed and equipped with one of the spring loaded slugs. And he carried the thing in hand as he traveled close to the wall...Always checking behind them to make sure nothing more crept up on them unaware. And then they were confronted with yet another choice. Left, or right? Without knowing more of the language or what the symbols might mean with the exception of the last one, what appeared to be a word or something like it...might as well be gibberish until they were able to gather more context.

It would take a six sided key to open this particular door though and the one he had in hand was an eight sided one. It was worth noting then that probably, some rooms, corridors, or even lifts might be considered to be those of limited access to only a handful of individuals. Clearly, he'd not gotten the eight sided key off one of them. He asked to see the other one that Hay'aan had taken and if it had eight sides, rather than six, then just as she suggested, probably better they went left instead.

He might have been able to get the door open without a key, had he ample time and cover to do it. But the placement of the door meant being exposed and in effect, cornered with few places to hide. So left it was, unless Annael or Three had a better suggestion. Just maybe they'd stumble across a six sided key in the process.

Annael nodded as he was shown the drawings. Seemed plain enough that they were numbers and this would later suggest to him that whatever the labelled room they found was, it was labelled as perhaps the first of it's kind, or perhaps just the one on the first floor. Right now, they didn't know.

As he stood ready to follow at Three's command, he had his bow out and was listening for anything of note as his spell faded. It had proven to be marginally helpful thus far if he was brutally honest about it, but could mean the difference between life or death when approaching a blind corner... Perhaps now he could re-cast it with better knowledge and greater success? It was worth a try if only to find out that. If not, then he might well be better off leaving his magic dormant for the mission till a more critical time.

As the others moved after Three Annael would crouch to concentrate for a moment, raising his hand holding his bow with a thumbs up and his other hand with a single finger pointing towards his ear. He would cast the same spell again, but this time he would attempt to account for whatever had made it go haywire last time, remembering where and when it had begun to get away from his control and paying closer attention during this time, doing his best to maintain control of the spell and cast it more firmly and durably upon himself. He would steal himself against the possible onslaught of sounds that had occurred previously to ensure he did not get caught by surprise again and remained composed.

Whether this succeeded or not, he would then move forward to catch-up with his companions. It seemed they wished to go left, which Annael had no objection to, but as they turned the corner, it became apparent it was a very long corridor compared to that which they had been along thus far. This could prove to leave them extremely exposed. If his spell had worked this time also, more smoothly or not, he would listen out as best he could to try and gain as much forewarning about what was at the end of the corridor as possible as early as possible. Turning his head and cupping his hand to hear better if doing so helped as they moved. He also kept an eye out for any kind of nook or cranny in the corridor that they might be able to duck behind in the event that they had no other choice, certainly Three had manage it back in the food-room corridor, perhaps they might be able to do so here as-well? HE moved forward with the rest of the group, pressing himself against the walls as they went.
