[VORTEX. OPEN] To Forget Would Be A Wonderful Thing

Mostly character building for Eelahi, but feel free to jump in! I would love the opportunity to thread with other people, even if it's only for a social thread. If it develops into something more, we can always grab a moderator!

Ulyris, Summer of Era XXVI

The tavern that Eelahi had chosen for this particular night was barely more than a hole in the wall - and that was putting it nicely. It was out of the way, tiny, and dirty - and just what she was looking for on this evening.

Eelahi was aware that she could have drank at her own place of work - The Golden Dragon was both an inn and a tavern, after all, and certainly well stocked.

But that would have meant being recognized, and that was one thing that she most certainly did not want.

Tonight, Eelahi wanted to drink. Not to be merry, not to join in a party, but simply to drink. She had heard that alcohol was good for that - for forgetting all that had come before. And this night, of all nights, she wanted to simply forget.

It wasn't as sipmly as all of that, of course. There was too much - too much pain, too much sorrow. Too many memories that a simple glass or two of wine would suffice.

So she ordered the cheapest, most potent grog available - the type of stuff that would probably kill you in larger quantities, and certainly did not go down smoothly.

But maybe, just maybe, she could forget. If only for a little while.

The first whiskey did not go down smoothly - not in the slightest. In fact, it very nearly ended up on the floor in front of the bar, along with the contents of her stomach.

Eelahi was not, after all, a particularly heavy drinker, particularly of these sorts of drinks; a glass of wine from time to time was the extent of her drinking history, which set her apart from her coworkers at the Golden Dragon Inn & Tavern.

But tonight ... tonight she wanted to become the sort of drunk that had heard stories about. The kind of alcohol induced daze that she had never even imagined she would become, back when her parents had been alive. The sort of drunk that her parents never would have approved of.

But no, that wasn't the right sort of thoughts for tonight. Tonight, she didn't want to think of them - didn't want to remember them. She wanted, more than anything else, to forget.

The next whiskey that she ordered she sipped slowly, instead of trying to knock it back as she had seen patrons of the Golden Dragon do, those few times she had emerged from the kitchens. The alcohol still burned as it went down, but she no longer felt as if her throat would rebel and refuse to keep the liquid down, so that was something at least.

By the time Eelahi finished her second whiskey, she was beginning to wonder if they were serving her actual alcohol. She certainly wasn't feeling any different.

But perhaps she simply hadn't drank enough yet.

With that thought in mind, Eelahi signalled the bartender, rolling the now empty glass on the bar top as she waited. It was several minutes before he finally made his way toward her, but she didn't mind - she certainly wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere.

For her third drink, Eelahi decided switch to something different - she had heard good things about Dwarven ale, after all, and according to the stories, Dwarves certainly knew a thing or two about getting drunk.

From the moment the ale touched her lips, Eelahi knew that this was the way to go. It didn't go down smooth, no - but at least it had some damned flavor this time, unlike the whiskey which was so harsh that any flavor was drowned out.

Smiling around the brim of her mug, Eelahi took another healthy swallow, sighing softly in pleasure.

It was as Eelahi was starting on her second mug of ale that she began to realize that she might have wanted to start off a bit more slowly.

She had seen drunks before, sure. Seen them stumbling down the streets as she walked home - or even as she made her way in to work. But she had always assumed that they had been drinking for hours in order to achieve that level of inebriation.

She had been here for a little over an hour, and already the world was beginning to take on a hazy quality. Her mouth was dry, his tongue heavy ... was this what it was like to be drunk?

Well, she was completely drunk yet, so there was no reason to stop now. Besides, the sooner she was drunk enough to forget, the longer she would get to live in that blissful ignorance of her past.

Eelahi rose the mug to her lips once again with a determined glint to her eyes.

Malvoitre is an upstanding Citizen
Vortex.

No one brought anything small into a bar around here.

Except for Mavloitre, who was rather small, and so far he'd had to bring himself everywhere. He'd tried to leave himself behind several times but somehow never managed the trick.

Cities were strange places for the fae. When an Imperial crown pretty much outweighed you, it became exceedingly difficult to pay for necessities like food and lodging. Fortunately, Malvoitre had learned long ago that he could forage up a decent meal at some of the crummiest taverns in town.

That's because the crummiest places tended to be the crumb-iest as well, and the lax cleaning standards meant he could flutter around and snatch a few tasty morsels left over from the taller races' meals. After all, it didn't take much to fill his tiny belly.

So it was that Malvoitre found himself in the Golden Dragon snarfing random bits of food off other peoples' tables. Some of the patrons glowered at him and tried to shoo him off like a common insect. Others grinned at him like he was an exotic zoo animal. But that didn't matter. He'd grab a bit of their food, then fly back up to a greasy chandelier to consume his improvised rations.

Thirst was an entirely different matter. Sure, there was morning dew to drink if he managed to wake up in time. And every city had a few fountains he could dunk his head into. But taverns were another story. Patrons didn't mind giving up crumbs, but they sure got angry when they found a stranger - no matter how small - sipping at their drink. Tallers were weird that way.

He'd always found that the best way get a drink was to find some lonely patron and just ask for one. People typically enjoyed seeing him foof about and didn't mind indulging him - so long as they didn't confuse him for a moth, which was understandable considering he kept flying around the chandelier.

"Sometimes they even buy me a big one," he said atop the tavern's light source, smiling at several fond, if not especially focused, memories.

That's when he spotted Eelahi drinking like she was trying to drown a fish. The fae grinned.

"Okay, Mal, don't screw this up," he said while slicking down his hair to make himself more presentable, which more than likely had the opposite effect. He glided down from his perch, and just as Eelahi began taking a swig of the ale, landed on the top rim of her mug, directly in her eyesight.

"Serale!" Malvoitre said, pointing a tiny finger right between her eyes. "You should buy me a drink!"

Eelahi sputtered, surprised, and ending up sloshing a good bit of her drink on herself as she jerked her head away from her mug, eyes wide.

Fae did not, in her estimation, normally appear atop of mugs of ale. She could be wrong, of course - she didn't normally indulge in this sort of drinking.

Her hand was unsteady as Eelahi lowered the mug down on to the dirty, scarred table before her, resulting in even more lost alcohol as she fae. She wasn't quite drunk enough to warrant the way she almost slammed the mug down, though she was still too confused and surprised to pay much mind to her actions at the moment.

"I--" Eelahi paused a moment. "Buy you -- buy you a drink. Right. Of course. What would you like?"

Just go along with it, she supposed, was the best thing she could do. Any fae crazy enough to alight on her mug and take the chance of being swallowed, themselves, very well many be crazy to do just about anything.

Malvoitre felt the mug shudder beneath him and instantly took flight, which turned out to be a very good idea since the taller started spitting alcohol everywhere. She followed up that little faux pas by smashing her drink against the counter, spilling a Malvoitre-sized portion of alcohol onto the bar.

To think of how many fae taverns would go out of business if they exhibited such waste. Wait ... did faes run taverns? Malvoitre couldn't remember, which either meant they didn't exist or that they were very, very good at peddling their wares.

"Oof," Malvoitre said as he watched Eelahi struggle with her drink. "You're not very good at this, are you? It's supposed to be inhale, drink; exhale, speak. A dwarf taught me that, so I'm pretty sure it's correct."

The fae hovered just above her eyebrows as she recovered from his appearance. He grinned stupidly when she agreed to buy him a beverage.

"Oh, anything bubbly," he replied. "My feet hurt, and soaking them in bubbles is almost as good as a massage!"

Once they were situated with a fresh round of drinks/foot baths, Malvoitre sighed audibly. "Yeah, that's the stuff," he said. "So ... what brings you to Vortex?"

Bubbly it is. Eelahi nipped over to the bar for a request of a rag and 'something bubbly', which brought her a strange look. She had no idea what the bar tender gave her, but the small fae seemed to enjoy it well enough, so Eelahi gave a mental shrug as she set about cleaning up the mess she had made, before once again taking a healthy swallow of her own drink.

"I live here," Eelahi responded after she had swallowed, setting her mug carefully on the table before her. "Work down at the Golden Dragon Inn." It was a good job, and allowed Eelahi to indulge in her love of cooking, though she often had to follow their recipes and guidelines, not experiment with her cooking as she was often wont to do at home.

"You don't see many fae in Vortex, though," Eelahi ventured after another drink, eyeing the tiny creature with curiosity now that her surprise had waned a bit.
