ooc: I beg my pardon to leave everyone hanging during my examination period since the start of April. I should have left a note. I will catch up with everyone quickly! Mei'lin, do join in when you can.

Two live fresh meat holding to more meat. What more could it ask for. The monster charged forward confidently, it's predatory eyes showing cunning. Argon could see the monster was planning something, something the creature had used for many times.

The monster charged forward, ignoring shield, weapons and people. It simply went through the pair, causing them to feel a little odd, like some strong wind blew through their bodies.

The monster turned around and attempted to bite in. It would have bit hard into Mei'lin, but with foreknowledge of what the monster could do, she dodged the bite. Barely.

With our hunters position out and the monsters visibily ethereal, what would be the next plan of action? Mei'lin moving away would surely leave her open to an attack. It was a dangerous moment here.

Well that did not work out. The meat he had offered was ignored and it attacked Mei'lin as if it was certain of victory.... well that presented a perfect opportunity for a change of tact.

With the meat still held Argon decided to see what would happen of he threw the meat upward in front of him. To capture the meat it would have to materialise. He reached for his axe while ready to dodge to the right (his body would be leaning left to reach for the axe and the creature had shown a decent capacity to anticipate them thus far).

That it could run past and materialise behind him again and deftly change its angle of attack was not lot on him and as he gripped his axe he prepared for a wide round, yet unwieldy, swing of the axe so that it could hit the creature behind him should it try the same trick twice.

He knew without a doubt that he could not outrun a creature which could ignore terrain obstacles but he could anticipate its strategies.

He then decided to do the unexpected to try and confuse and confound the creature. It might have heard battlecries and it would have heard grunts of exertion so to add to the attack he decided to start a song. A lazy bar shanty

"ooo the ladies are all like their lime in aelyria prime!" he sung out of tune, rhyme and offbeat as any seasoned bar patron might "but the ladies are all far along in old taraloonn!"

He was inexperienced, making up words as he went and would sound absolutely terrible to all and sundry. Maybe it would mean he would be the target and maybe it would infuriate the creature enough that it stopped being so smart in its strikes so he could chop into it like a butcher preparing meat for sale.

The creature's eyes follow the meat up, then downwards as it hit the floor. There was a little confusing in its eyes, but it decided to charge again.

Once again, the creature charged through the two of them and Argon swung his axe, barely missing Mei'lin in the process. He did not hit anything though. He noticed the creature had continued running and jumped onto a low tree about 20 feet away.

As it was about to jump, a trick it had learnt to be quite useful, Argon began singing, quite off-key. The creature tilted its head curiously and just stared there. It had been injured before by a loud yell from a ugly man-like creature. It almost died when it was burnt by a ball of fire that appeared from out of nowhere. It wonder if this was the same thing and decided to flee. There were better food source elsewhere and so it ran away, back in the direction it came from.

Just as it was out of sight, it stopped and gave a loud screech before continuing its run. It sounded like a challenge, either asking the pair to chase them if they dare or maybe it was to say it would be back. Either case, they were safe for now.

Argon's Mother would never have believed that his singing voice may have saved his life. Maybe later it would be the death of him but apparently something in the way he sang spooked the Shadowstray when it looked as though it was about to launch a devastating attack. So it fled away from them presumably on the trail of some other food.

Argon did not let his guard down for quite some time but as he waited for an inevitable attack that did not come he took stock of what he had learned in that encounter:

1. The shadowstray was capable of complex well thought out attacks using its special abilities and agility.

2. It would not simply go after the rabbit that Argon had thrown simply because it was there and showed enough cunning to deal with the more dangerous threats first.

3. It had feared something when he had sung though exactly what he wasn't sure.

It became clear when they next engaged with this Shadowstray that it would be ideal if it would attack them on terrain that they could prepare for the strike. Taking note of the creature's preference to take to the trees Argon reasoned that it had to become materalised to be able to climb and balance on these trees otherwise it would fall to the ground. There was an opportunity in that. If they could prepare a trap in the treetops then before it has a chance to respond they might be able to kill or injure it.

Ideally they needed the means to force it to remain material. Argon thought back to the rabbit it had offered the shadowstray. It did not appear to be interested in such a measly scrap. Was that why it pursued them? Well they were a lot meatier than the rabbit. That the rabbit had since scrambled somewhere in the forest meant little in this instance.

Argon turned to Mei'lin who appeared to have been incredibly silent in this entire event and decided that perhaps it was best to drag her to the safety of the camp if she was unable to speak.

Once back in the camp Argon left Mei'lin to her on tent and started thinking through the lessons learned ever vigilant that the creature may pursue them again. He reasoned, however, that even that creature would need to sleep at some point. They knew the direction in which it had travelled but not its lair. If the creature had to sleep in material form that would be the ideal time to attack but to try and get their under-prepared would see Argon travel to his death.

Perhaps he should try again to feed that creature? It needed warm meat either still alive or very recently dead? Well what could the forest produce that was like that? The formidable bear might do it. It would be meaty enough that the monster hunter and dwarf would be less of a meal. The creature may also engage with Argon for longer so he may learn exactly how it operates and thinks. Perhaps it would reveal its lair in the process. Being a flying creature he suspect it might be in the thick of the trees or some hilly or mountainous area nearby. So many thoughts!

Argon decided he would sleep with his back firmly against a stony/rocky outcrop where it would be difficult to see his sleepsack and even more difficult for the creature to attack from any surprise angle. His choice of sleeping position also meant that loose stones would make noise that would wake him. He had bid Mei'lin to come but he wasn't sure what the dark elven monster-hunting maiden was up to. Perhaps she had a plan of her own?

Argon and Mei'lin got back to camp safely.

Argon's line of thoughts about the creature attribute helped him think a little better. The creature looked like two creatures in one. A bear-like creature and a giant bird-like creature.

General knowledge wise, a bear hunting habit was to attack the biggest creature and a bird hunting habit was to attack fast from the skies. It had displayed both these habit, although most would know a bird tend to hunt creature much smaller than themselves. Had the creature ran off because the bear and the bird's hunting manner conflicted with the Shadowstray?

What were the inteprid hunters going to do now? They had confirmed the sighting of the monsters, knew the approximate location of the creature's hunting ground and a little of it's habit.

They could stay in the camp, quite sure they would not be attacked by the Shadowstray. They could attempt to hunt down the creature in the cover of darkness. They could also return back and report the sightings. Three obvious options and there could be more that were not as obvious.

Argon ruminated over what he had learned a bearlike birdlike hybrid shadowcreature exhibiting predatory behaviours but was it more a predatory bird or bear in behaviour? Would a hybrid creature be able to exhibited new behaviours completely alien to the base creaturesit appeared to copy?

These things were hard to tell from one interaction. The logical and safe thing to do would be to return to civilisation and report the sighting. Argon, however, wanted to 'play' a bit longer.

And so he drew on his experience to decide on an action. It had ignored the offering of live rabbit. It was possibly a mere morsel. It had attacked them. Was it territorial or were they food? Argon's hunch was the latter and if theybwere food it implied it hunted larger organisms for food.

They had uncovered its hunting grounds before although the extent of this was unclear. Argon reasoned the camp was situated beyond its area of the hunt. That gave him time to consider his action. He was willing to gamble that the creature would need to sleep. Bears usually hibernated in winter so if it were anything like a bear being awake during the winter would be taking its toll. Maybe it hadn't started hibernation yet? Argon figured that the creature was likely to sleep at night, like he himself did. Birds were harder to predict given there were many birds that were awake during the night but that suggested they would not have encountered the shadowstray when they did.

Argon wanted to hunt and capture a larger creature for bait this time but getting the live creature into the hunting grounds posed an issue and risked injury before even fighting the shadowstray. He wasn't going to have a second go at being friendly to it.

Argon opted that he should consider going after the creature at night, late at night when it would, if Argon were right, be deep asleep but where would the hybrid shade sleep? Bear's sought out caves. Birds made nests, often high up. By reckoning this meant the creature might seek out a rocky cave that was in a rocky and high outcroft with a protective overhang and may 'nest' there.

Stealth would be key. He would need to travel light so the next time he woukd strike he would stash away his backpack in a fixed easy to find location and make his way there.

Secondly he couldn't assume that sight alone was the creature's primary sense. Smell and hearing could be keen. Hearing was the reason he was travelling light. He would bring only his shield and axe with him. Smell? Well he needed to mask his sent with the native smells of the area. He reasoned that bathing then applying the forest's muds would accomplish this. The first action he wpukd take would be to try and find a vantage point nearby to camp to seek put any other hills or rocky outcroppings were nearby to the hunting ground.

He would use the remaining day going about his preparations, includin resting, and was willing to go it alone if Mei'lin were to remain silent and apparently unavailable. He would seek put a stream to bath in well outside of the established territory of the beast and prepare a small fire next to the stream due to not wanting to die of exposure in the winter. Following the bathing, which he did begrudgingly, he would crack open a tree with his axehead and elaborate in the masking sent by trying to apply a combination of sap, mud and bark. Maybe the creature wuld ignore him if he accidentally woke it and appeared to its senses as a strange dwarflike tree? That would be interesting.

Once prepared he would venture back towars the sighting area in the direction of the suspected cave-nest hoping to catch it asleep and materialised.
