Everyone except Gardolan:

Aboard Aracan Tradings flagship the Tribrand, an 800 ton Trading Galleon.

The Tribrand flagship was an impressively large Galleon class, one of the few you’d see outside of the Imperial navy, reserved for those with enough wealth to crew and maintain them. Shining black and gold paint, three decks in size, she had two main sails, one smaller forward and rear sail, with about a hundred crew all told. One central ballista was on each side of the ship, she had no cannons but she did have an additional compliment of twenty archers, about two dozen trained guards and a couple of mages, all dressed in deep greens as with the few officers that were around. The rest of the hundred or so sailors, male or sometimes female were of mixed race, and wore any and all kinds of clothing, their mood on the whole was upbeat.

Underway, four days out of port, the trip had been uneventful and the weather looked fair enough. Each man and women hired had a bunk and a small chest to themselves, any women aboard had access to the smaller female quarters, which were much like the officer’s quarters, clean but nothing special aboard a ship, containing about thirty women. Everyone else not an officer bunked with the rest of the crew, but being specially hired the adventurers did have first choice of where to sleep, having the best spots if they wanted them. The conditions were as you’d expect with a hundred or so men bunking together in a confined space, calling it stuffy would be kind.

Nobody had met the captain, he’d spent all his time locked away in his cabin. The first mate, an elderly mage by the looks of the green uniformed robes he wore, had greeted them and seen to their needs. Narun his name, had allowed them to pick where they would spend their time, and what they’d attend to on their journey, they had free roam but were encouraged by others around them to make themselves useful aboard ship.

Gardolan, not on the Tribrand:

Woke to find himself locked in a dark room, rocking back and forth, with no memory of how he got there. His hands were tied with a chain above his head, and his feet were sore, the floor also felt wet. His weapons, armor or personal belongings were not in sight, all he had were the clothes on his back.

Waking up in unknown surroundings was fairly familiar to Gardolan, but it must have been a fairly bad party to end up sleeping like this. Not only was it dark and uncomfortably humid, he quickly found out that somebody had chained him in place. And even worse, he wasn't drunk and probably hadn't been for a while, still the rocking of the floor felt familiar.

But he had seen this dream before. This had happened before, so the obvious result of that thought was that his mind was merely tricks on him. This was just a new kind of bad dream. "Wakyy wakyy.." he grunted with the whiskey-influenced voice of his. But he didn't wake up. This wasn't a memory of being slaved on a pirate ship. This felt unnervingly real.

Sure, it wasn't quite the same ship that he remembered, and judging from his body looks and general feeling, he was probably an adult somewhere in his thirties. Right how it should be, he thought, and the feeling of being chained and prisoned on an unknown ship grew again more real.

"Bloody bloody bloody mermaids!", he cursed as he tested his feet and tried to stand up. "Not again not again... no fun at all." he continued and shook his chains a few times, just in case they would come off. And if they wouldn't his eyes would soon turn towards the fastenings of the chains. He had build a few of this kind of ships before, so it was interesting to see how good craftmanship was on place to hold him.

This would have been the obvious continuation. There wasn't a whole lot he could do here. Probably his captors would come by some time to see if he still was unconscious, maybe even feed him once in a while. Trying to understand the situation was also something to think about. And he'd obviously have to make a clever plan here, too bad he didn't have one yet.

Secrets :
Gardolan is a professional shipwright (lvl 2) and a novice gadgeteer (lvl 1), he might be wearing a golden earring shaped to a stylized octopus that is also a secret sign for smugglers that operated around Ieffreon (and who knows where). It's much possible that the earring has been taken from him by his captors.

Sylag had seen a notice that a shipping company was looking for some help to ensure a cargo reached his destination. Interested the dwarf had arrived at the appointed time.

Surprisingly the Captain didn't met the dwarf and the others. It was the first mate. The dwarf wasn't sure that giving the adventurers the pick of where to sleep. The dwarf didn't want to cause the crew any dislike of him.

The first day on the ship the dwarf scurried through the ship going wherever he could just exploring. For the past few days the dwarf had every night taking the midnight watch from the crows nest. The dwarf had good night sight from being a dwarf. Sylag thought that taking that watch which probably wasn't a popular watch. The dwarf had talked to the crew and officers trying to learn as much as he could about the ship and how it was designed. The dwarf had never seen the Captain despite his movement about the ship. The dwarf helped out where he could as the ship travelled trying to stay busy and earn his keep despite a lack ox experience.

Back on the ocean. Alastair was hoping more than guessing that it'd be equally exciting as the last voyage he went on. Alastair seldom slept, and he had found that a few hours in a small bunk in the middle of the day was preferable to putting up with unison snoring of a hundred sailors.

Leisure ill-suited the Jaedaxian, so although he wasn't a skilled sailor, he put himself to work where he could. He could tie a serviceable knot and had often worked unloading crates on the docks of Alyxandrya to make enough to eat, so he knew enough to help out here and there.

Although there was no doubt he was here because of his skill with a sword. He'd tried his best to hide any indication of his magical powers, but it'd probably come up eventually. He wasn't the only mage aboard, and he distrusted the others immensely.

He was out on the deck, trying to get a feeling for the wind and keeping an eye on the ocean for signs of life. He'd already used his druidism to catch the occasional fish or sea turtle, but he'd tried to be subtle about it. He wasn't fishing now, just smoking a cigarette and petting Roslynn.

He'd probably head inside for a nap soon, but for now, he was just keeping an eye on things.

Vaishen leaned on the railing of the Tribrand, and he breathed deep of the warm, salt laiden air that marked the Eunesian Seas. Gods, it’d been almost two years since he’d served aboard a ship in any capacity, and even longer since he’d been aboard a ship of such size and grandeur. The Lost at Last had been a mere carrack, and the word mere was a thing which had to be applied when comparing it to a galleon. Memories of those young days long gone swam through his head, and it made him crave those old days of seamanship.

“We should build up a fleet in Demios.” The nairu mused to his companion, hoping she wasn’t too busy retching over that same railing to hear him -- for the suggestion was part whimsy and part spark of some serious interest that seized him. Vaishen rarely ever spoke such a suggestion or idea without already having the details, logistics, and a plan for it all placed firm within his mind and grasp.

Yet, nostalgia made it hard to not give voice to some desire to return to that one source of happiness within his boyhood years. Then, at last, he tore his longing gaze from the ocean to look at his lover and companion, Jade, who had accompanied him on this random flight of fancy he’d had upon seeing the Tribrand docked in Demios’ port. “How are you feeling?”

Of all the places Porta had been to in recent months, none were as foreign and unfamiliar as the sea. It was a first, an entirely new experience. The girl who had spent all her life in trees and running across solid ground now found herself on… a boat, the Tribrand. No land, no soil, no forests or a single tree in sight. There was nothing but water in all four cardinal directions.

Naturally, seasickness was inevitable.

Which was why Porta had planned ahead and got her hands on some drellas, an herb she’d read about in her book that could solve motion sickness when turned into a tea. They were four days into the expedition, and she’d been weaning herself off the herb as fast as possible to the point where now she was only slightly queasy. It turned out she wasn’t the only one who had yet to get their ‘sea legs’. She'd glance over at Jade and Vaishen over by the ship's railing. Porta willingly shared the drellas tea with her pale-haired fellow female… under the promise not to tell her captain, of course.

On this particular brightening, she wandered the main deck of the ship, keeping in Vaishen’s general vicinity in case he needed her to do something, helping out the crew where she could, and just generally doing what she typically did – watching and listening to her surroundings. Waiting.

Ready.

Secrets :

Armor:
Nope, just the usual all-black attire

Weapons:
Two daggers, sheathed on each side of the hips
One small knife, strapped to right calf
Set of throwing knives, belted diagonally across the chest

Other Equipment:
Black grappling hook, collapsed and strapped diagonally across the back with a few dozen feet of thin, sturdy cord
Pack with healing supplies (herbal balms and powders, gauze, bandages, and drellas to counter seasickness), flint

Skills:
L1 Dual-Wield Daggers
L1 Throwing Knives
L1 Healing

Relevant Lores:
Stealth and Tracking
Climbing – trees, mountains… ropes, nets, masts

Simmering Seadogs and the Black Spot.

Gardolan:

Dim this light he was in, eyes still adjusting, it was hard to see the specifics. Thankfully Gardolan’s skill as a shipwright would tell him the chains were well made, and well maintained heavy iron, looked after it seemed. After further inspection what they were attached to looked like it didn't receive the same care, the metal hook they ran through had been there rusting away a long, long time, especially those screws holding the hook to the wall. Could he bend or dislodge rusty iron? Possibly with a lot of effort, but perhaps that wasn’t the only way out of this.

His head throbbed, especially behind it, he was in for a heck of a headache. The voices outside the cell shouting at each other were not helping at all.

As his eyes adjusted to the very dim light around him, he could make out two, three… four? No three, others sharing his cell, all attached the same to the other three sides of the cell. Ahead of Gardolan was the cell door, a thick oak door with metal braces, it had a sliding hole midway down you could look out of or pass things through, opened from the other side unfortunately.

One of the men with him to his right, was older, a human, mumbling about bad things, bad things! Bad THINGS! Don’t touch his leg, his leg…. NOT THE LEG! The second, an orc to his left was snoring away loudly, both were obviously not here for their health, and look like they’d been here at least a few days, if not a week or more. The third was dressed as naval officer would be, in green uniform, though obviously beaten pretty badly, even in this light he didn't look in a good way, "you're awake then," a pained voice asked.

Sylag:

Sylag's willingness to help out as one of the crew, earned him several friends aboard ship. One of the petty officers, another dwarf named Uthgran in particular took a liking, earning Sylag the nickname the night watchman and a good friend. Spending much of his time in the crows nest too, Uthgran took his time to show the dwarf the duties of the job, which flags to raise, and how to signal the crew below. Red being for warning, and pointing the direction of a danger, green being for land ahoy, white being for the changing direction of the wind or weather front such as mist moving in. Three ravens were also there, to help navigate in mist, they would fly toward land if the ship couldn’t see it, to be used when someone below asked him to.

Over time they even trusted Sylag with the occasional day watch, but the nickname the night watchman stuck. It was one such morning, stood up with Uthgran chatting away at his side, early into his shift the wind looked to be changing. Exposed as he was up here from the crow’s nest, Sylag and Uthgran would feel the change first, a gentle breeze coming from their port (right) side. They'd also be the first to spot a small black dot coming towards them from the direction of the new wind, nobody else would see it yet, and it was clearly gaining on them.

Alastair:

Archers to his right had set up practicing their aim, aiming out to sea, they looked competent and well-disciplined in their two rows. Two officers drilled them, an elderly Vysstichi imitating a navy officer, perhaps he was Imperial ex-navy barking orders as he was, and a younger olive skinned Kemite who was largely silent, dutifully correcting their aim or technique if it needed it.

One row would fire, stopping to restring, the next would then do the same alternating. It was probably impressive to watch, regimented and would work in their favour on land, sadly all grouped up it made them a great big sitting duck on a ship if anyone got too close, Alistar’s experience if he had any in battle would show him that much by how they stood and acted. This was a merchant vessel preparing for battle if it came, not one that had seen it.

On the back of his head, he’d feel the wind had shifted, but he was facing away from it. That was probably why the archers had set up in this direction now, eventually the sailors aboard would start adjusting their sales rigging and ropes to match, so he’d see for certain they were trying to hold their course as best they could.

Alastair’s cat however seemed to be on edge, and wouldn't settle now no matter what he did.

Vaishen, Porta, Jade

Would find their voyage fairly uneventful so far, the rocking of the ship had picked up a bit for Porta, and that might make her eventually realise the wind had shifted to their port (right) side, slowing their ship. Sailors aboard began to make adjustments to the rigging and sails, which would if it hadn’t already make Vaishen realise the same. The effect of Porta’s herbs would hold for now, having had a few days to find her sealegs, but these waves were still fairly mild aboard a big heavy ship like this.

Uneventful their trip was until a large white Dorin walked over, armed with a cutlass and a few tattoos, he looked one of the more seasoned members of the crew, rough definitely, “captain wants to see you,” he said bluntly to them. It was almost too blunt, too matter-of-factly, rude you might call it, perhaps that was just his way.

Turning to walk off back to the captain’s cabin, the Dorin ascended up several steps and through the various bodies of men at work, the deck was busy, but became quieter closer to the cabin.
  • Those that followed would meet a large confused human guard at the door, who didn’t want to let them in at first, trying to tell them the captain didn’t want to be disturbed, which made the request to see him even odder. "He's not been out since before we left port." Their Dorin friend however was adamant he 'did' want to be disturbed. Eventually the door would be opened to an empty front room with a seat and desk, a bedroom behind it with a closed door, and two adjoining rooms to explore.
  • -
  • Those that stayed where they were, or just in passing by, would find the elderly first mate Narun. The mage was draped in his usual green robes, staring off into the distance with a spyglass, there was a concerned look on his face and he was scribbling some notes down on a parchment.

Sylag shook his head when the crew started calling him the night watchman. Granted the dwarf did it where none of the crew could see it to not lose any ground he had made with the crew.

Sylag begin to learn the flag system for communicating aboard ship from one of the petty officers another dwarf named Uthgran.

It took some time but the crew started letting Sylag take watches during the day. One morning Sylag had the watch and as was usual he and Uthgran were up in the crows nest.

While standing up early in the shift the breeze shifted to the right side of the ship. The gentle breeze felt good as it gently brushed the pair of dwarfs faces.

Remembering his lessons Sylag set out the white flag indicating the direction the breeze was now coming from.

Suddenly something was their the dwarf didn't remember seeing before a black dot. Sylag blinked in case something was in his eye or part of his vision was obscured. The black dot stayed. In fact the dot drew closer. The Sea was not a natural location for the dwarf so he treats unknowns as danger. Sylag trotted out the red flag to indicate danger. Better to be safe then sdry the dwarf thought.

At first glance his company didn't seem familiar, but then how could he know for sure. It was still too dark to see every detail. The green suit of naval officer ringed familiar, but it wasn't outright clear who he was. "Awake? Yes. Could say that. Now, you? May I ask, politely, who am I talking to?" he asked pushing the pain aside. Maybe talking would give him something to think other than pain.

Gardolan was indeed fairly disoriented still. He had figured out that he was on a ship, but there was no way to know whether they were next to coastline or far out on the ocean. His memories were still also very fuzzy, mostly the images that came were from this ship, embarking, rotting in chains, some people going around doing something, but everything was way too mixed and hazy, even so that he couldn't be sure what was real and what was not.

Perhaps his fellow prisoners had better understanding of the current situation. "And more so, what are we doing on this decaying rot-eaten piece of nothing anyways?"

Perhaps betting a former pirate that she would do better on the sea had been foolish for the half-elf but to be fair, she hadn’t actually been aware that he had been a pirate before. She knew a fair amount about her lover but that hadn’t been on that he went into often or if he did she had never bothered paying much attention to him. It wasn’t her fault that he could be boring at times. Still, she had been foolish and had paid for it when she had gotten aboard the ship with Vaishen and Porta and felt, immediately as well, that terrible feeling of seasickness. Oh gods…

If Jade could have throatpunched the smug out of her companion, she might have but moving too much just did not suit her well. Thankfully she had managed to get some herbs from Porta and oh so nicely made the girl agree not to mention it to Vaishen. He might figure it out though since he had his moments of brilliance. Leaning over the boat, Jade wasn’t feeling her best but it wasn’t near as bad as it had been when they had first set out. Glaring at Vaishen, she offered a rude hand gesture before turning to glance at a rather rough looking fellow who approached the trio, abruptly claiming that the captain wanted to see them. Well, so much for having an uneventful time, this most likely would lead to some craziness where she’d either kill something or throw up. Who knew, maybe it would be both!

Clutching her staff, she turned and looked at Vaishen with a lifted brow. “With an invitation like that, how could we refuse. Oh…like this.” She looked over at the retreating dorin and flipped him off before turning back to look at the waves. She had no interest in going down below, at least here she had plenty space to toss her chunks without being made to clean it up later. Porta and Vaishen could handle whatever was down below.

Assuming the other two followed the dorin, Jade’s attention was caught by an elderly gent who she had seen mulling around before. A spyglass was in his hand and he looked concerned as he gazed out. Had he seen something that should concern them? Walking over, using her staff to help steady her, Jade would walk up behind the first mate as he wrote in his little book. “What have you seen?”

"With an invitation like that, how could we refuse? Oh, like this." Jade's gesture was unladylike, if Vaishen was being polite in describing it, and he sighed as he shook his head at her. The woman had been damn near insufferable for the whole trip, and she hadn't even bothered entertaining the suggestion he'd tossed at her mere moments before the dorin arrived. Just more rudeness and anger.

Vaishen hadn't often wanted to be apart from Jade in those days since they began sleeping together, but perhaps this was one of those times it was best to give her some space. Or perhaps he needed the space. Either way, Vaishen pushed himself up off the railing and made to follow the dorin. "It's damn near mutiny to refuse an audience with a captain on his own ship. Good pirates know this." Yeah, one last jab at how much more awesome he was being than her -- plus a smirk to hammer it in -- and Vaishen walked off to meet the captain.

They encountered the guard, and Vaishen didn't speak as the dorin and the other man hashed out their disagreement. Vaishen furrowed his brow, though, and he felt his danger sense flip-flopping about in his stomach. Something seemed off. Why was the captain isolated from the crew for days? Why weren't these two on the same page? Vaishen found himself scrutinizing the dorin with his gaze. Was the man possibly a mutineer or a fraud?

Too many questions, not enough answers. Instinct made his hands reflex in instinctive fashion, as if grabbing an invisible sword hilt, and he made sure to trail behind the dorin at all times when they entered the cabin. Vaishen did not set out to explore -- no, he chose to test the dorin instead. "You said the captain wished to see us," he stated in a loud enough voice that would carry throughout the entire cabin, "so where is our gracious host, then?"

“I will come as well,” Porta commented with a small shrug. Following behind the dorin and Vaishen, she found herself gripped with curiosity about the captain’s mysterious absence from ship activities. It was odd for the leader of a group of men to be so reclusive; at least, Porta couldn’t even imagine her own captain locking himself away from the other Hegemony soldiers, especially without a clear reason.

After a bit of miscommunication between the dorin and the human guard to the captain’s suite, Porta’s curiosity only escalated. Inside the room, while Vaishen discussed the strangeness of the situation with the dorin, she wandered around to quickly explore the two adjacent rooms. See what she could see, find what she could find. And wait for the ship's captain to emerge.

Like her namesake, she was a real pain when she wanted to be but usually she behaved. And besides, she was a stray Alyxandrya cat. A feral creature from the docks. A little water or seasickness wasn't likely to bother her.

But cats had a sixth sense for things men seldom noted...

Alastair turned to check the flags, sure enough, he saw the blood red of danger. He scanned the horizon, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Ducking past the archers, he made his way to the front of the ship. His eyes were searching for something, anything which had caused the dwarf to give the signal that they were in danger.

Meanwhile, he loaded his hand crossbows. If there was trouble, he would need them.
