Phaedra’s History
Phaedra was born in a graveyard. Her father had a menial job digging graves and making minimal efforts to keep the graveyard in presentable shape, and he lived with his wife in a comically small hut (even for Cethers) on the graveyard property.
When Phaedra was 7 her mother had had enough of the graveyard and poverty lifestyle, and left home with her younger brother, never to return. Phaedra’s father, now with more time and quiet for introspection, decided that he too was losing his patience with the minimal existence he had hitherto been scrounging out. After some thought and experimentation, he developed a system of grave robbery, were by he would wait until after the funeral and then wedge a board into the grave so that he could cover it with only a few inches of dirt and none would be the wiser. Later that evening he would come out and dig up the grave and take any valuable he might find.
Grave robbing was an uneven way to make a living, with mostly very small takes punctuated with larger ones. Phaedra saw this, and began to take charge of the family funds, saving the larger takes and spreading them out over the ensuing brightenings and cycles.
Things were moderately good for a while, until one brightening Phaedra’s father dug up a corpse with a fine ring that he took a special fancy too. Not three brightenings passed before he was spotted wearing it by one of the dead man’s sons. Saying nothing, the son returned to the graveyard with his two brothers in the small candlemarks of the night, and set fire to Phaedra’s meager hut.
Seeing flames on all sides of her and the air choking with smoke, Phaedra fell down in a swoon and had what she later learned to be an unwinding dream. When she awoke, she found herself inexplicably alive, lying next to the charred body of her father. Salvaging a bone from her father’s hand as a memento, Phaedra moved to the city of Aelyria Prime, to find what work she could.
