Saal'Niss is an upstanding Citizen
[Desert] Like a good neighbor [Indefinite]

The traveling group that Saal'Niss had been picked up by in the desert was a group of wandering merchants. He had traveled with them for some time. He did errands for them and did his best to earn his keep while among them. Through them, he had learned the languages of the surface, if not particularly well. Picking up their dialect of saurid, because the surface ones spoke differently to the underground ones, had been a little easier. In the end it was the same family of language. It was this other language that they spoke, the one they called common, that was difficult.

However, it was arguably more important, for many people on this surface were capable of speaking common, and Saal'Niss did not think that he would get by with only speaking to other saurid.

He had learned more of this crazy surface world. There was still so much strange about it, but the basics had been established. He had asked many questions of them, and they had been kind enough to provide him with many answers. And perhaps when they were sick of his questions they had taken him back to their mound and deposited him there for others to answer his questions. It was a small community, one that struggled to survive in the deserts, but thus far they had made a living for themselves. Here as well, Saal'Niss did his best to assist where possible. There was not much he could do but he did his best to learn and help and not get in the way.

One day it seemed the saurid elders were summoning him. This felt quite familiar. He quickly made his way over. He did not want to keep them waiting.

A fair amount of time had passed, and while Saal'Niss was still more or less treated as an outsider, it didn't seem as if he was particularly unpopular in the tribe. The others saw him as rather exotic, if anything - everybody knew there were all kinds of saurid, but these days it wasn't particularly they got to meet those who were so different.

They'd put him to work, giving him mostly menial labor and other such simple things. With a communication barrier in place, there really wasn't any way for him to do anything more complicated. Slowly, though, he was learning, and the mound had plenty of teachers willing to assist him.

Eventually, there would be more for him to do. There was a group of three elders waiting for him, and they bade him sit. Saal'Niss still had some difficulty understanding them, but by now he understood most of what they said to him.

How was he doing, they wanted to know. Was he comfortable? How did he feel about how things were going?

In any case, they hadn't called him here merely for idle chatter. They had an old friend of the tribe who was going to be doing some work in the area, and thought that Saal'Niss might want to stretch his legs and go along as well. It would be an opportunity for him to see more of the world beyond just the desert, too. He'd probably just be providing an escort. What did he think?

Saal'Niss answered the questions as truthfully as possible, although he did not want to offend the elders in any way. They had taken him in after all. They had done a lot for him and he not provided too much for them. There were definitely some areas where things were hard, but he did not want to make it seem like he was ungrateful or thought it was their fault in any way.

Yes, he was comfortable. Everybody had been very kind to him. He was grateful for all of their patience, and their assistance in helping him get used to the surface. He wanted to help them as best as he could, and to learn as much as possible.

Saal'Niss felt such an answer accurately enough conveyed how he felt while at the same time flattered the saurid mound enough. He hoped this was the case. They seemed to have something to do with him and of course he would accept. They had done so much for him, any chance to return this favor was good.

"I will go for sure," the saurid noted with a nod of his head. "All I require are the details."

A member of their community, a female saurid by the name of Skaeve, had left the mound recently. She'd apparently been tasked with some duty or other by the governor of the province. The elders didn't seem to care too much about the details there - Saal'Niss got the impression that they weren't particularly fond of Skaeve.

Regardless, she had an official duty and role now, and her current task had her reach out back to the mound for assistance. It had something to do with the mountains, and Saal'Niss was probably the one to go to for that sort of thing, right? Since... well, he'd lived underneath them, but that was probably better than the saurid who had only ever lived on flat land.

She would be arriving soon on the outskirts of town. Would Saal'Niss go over and meet with her?

It sounded simple enough. Although at the same time, Saal'Niss wondered what all of this was about. The way they put it, it was true that the saurid had a bit of mountain experience. But at the same time he was not particularly skilled in much of anything, and did not know much about the surface world either. There was only so much that his expertise could go, considering most of his time had been spent underground.

Perhaps they did not like this woman very much and were simply trying to appease her. Sending along Saal'Niss was better than sending along nobody.

Regardless of the circumstances, the saurid's position remained the same. "Of course," he said with a nod. "What is the lady's name? And where do I go to meet with her?"

The saurid's name was Skaeve. Officially, she was a Lady of Moonstone - a minor noble title. She was the Knight-Elder of a chapter of knights founded by the governor of the province now.

She would be arriving from the southeast any time now. Saal'Niss was asked to go over and meet her on the outskirts of the mound.

The titles were ultimately meaningless to Saal'Niss. That she had any was apparently important. What they meant individually was lost upon him. She seemed to be of some manner of importance. Was it a lot? Was it only a little? He supposed it would be more obvious once he met her. The elders did not seem to have anything in particular else to say. They had not told him she needed to be greeted in such and such a way, or treated in such and such a manner. Hopefully it would be all right.

He politely excused himself from the meeting and headed where he had been told to go. From there, he looked out for anybody who might fit the description he had been given.

For all the titles that this Skaeve lady apparently had, there didn't really seem to be much fanfare in regards to her arrival. Saal'Niss wouldn't notice anybody else around here - at least, not anybody who was specifically here like he was. Everybody was just sort of minding their own business.

Off in the distance? A speck, a lone figure. Soon enough it translated into somebody riding one of the various lizard mounts that were common in this part of the desert. The rider itself? Presumably Skaeve. Female saurid? Check. Who else could it be?

She was... really small, though, Saal'Niss noticed. Like, really small. Very petite.

Soon enough she'd arrive, coming up to Saal'Niss. She took a moment, clearing her throat. "I am Knight-Elder Skaeve," she introduced herself, very properly, although her planned introduction took a detour once she actually took a look at him.

"Woah! You look weird! I don't really recall seeing you around before. Are you new?"

It really was just going to be Saal'Niss by himself, then. It seemed like his new friend might be in the same club that the saurid was in. The not too popular around these parts club. Wherever this was going to go, though, perhaps this Lady Skaeve might warm up to him a bit more than the elders.

Saal'Niss waved politely. The saurid's stature did not seem to match up with all of this titles. Nor did she really hold herself in such a manner. Personally, he found this rather refreshing. He had been a little anxious about how somebody like her might act, but she seemed rather frank.

"Yes," the saurid said with a nod. Really, that answered most of what she said. Saal'Niss did look rather weird compared to the surface saurid. He was also new. "I come... greet you. Help. Elders say." He hoped Skaeve got the point of what he was trying to say.

Skaeve seemed to listen to him slowly, as Saal'Niss' common wasn't exactly the best. There was a bit of chin stroking as she took in what he had to say - and with any luck she'd be able to even understand what he was trying to get at, too.

"Okay." There was a simple nod from her. "So... just you? Anybody else? What've they told you so far?"

"Yes, I am the only one who was sent," Saal'Niss said in response to her question. "I believe I am the only one who will be going. I was told you needed assistance with a task, and that I might be able to help." Well, when he put it that way, it really didn't sound like he'd been told anything at all.

"I lived underground beneath the mountains for some time."

"Ohhh!" Well, Saal'Niss had explained where he was from, and Skaeve figured that probably explained why he looked super different. Maybe it had been different before, but these days, there didn't seem to be all that many saurid around - it wasn't super often that different kinds of saurid met each other. At least, not when it came to communities such as these. Larger metropolitan cities, for instance, might have all sorts of saurid populations.

If Skaeve was bothered by the fact that it was just the one person sent along, she didn't show it. Instead, she reached her hand out to shake Saal'Niss' quite vigorously. Full of energy this one. "All right! Awesome! Yeah, well, I can brief you on the rest while we make our way over, no problem. Do you have everything you need? Can you head out right away?"

Saal'Niss did his best to muster enough energy to reciprocate the handshake. He did not think that he would be able to keep up if he tried to do this the entire time that they were together. She seemed like a very friendly person, however. He could only imagine what exactly her relation with the mound's elders were. There was still much that he did not know.

"Yes. Ready." They could go whenever Skaeve wanted.

Right then! Onwards! Forwards!

Except, one of them was mounted and one of them was on foot. That wouldn't do at all, oh no. Skaeve didn't feel well over that fact. She offered to see if the two of them could both ride her mount - she wasn't particularly large, after all, it would probably be fine?

Did Saal'Niss know how to ride anything? It wasn't too difficult, her mount was rather well-mannered. She'd sit in front and steer, all he had to do was... hold on? They'd move slow, no problems!

Saal'Niss was not acquainted with the riding of any animal. Such mounts have not been particularly available underground. At Skaeve's insistence, it seemed, they would have to share. The saurid personally would not have minded walking all the way, however it seemed rude to refuse once the offer was made.

He was nervous, approaching the large lizard mount. It was hard to imagine that the people of the surface could do such a thing as to tame these beasts, or any beast. He would simply have to trust in Skaeve's word.

"How... get on?" Hopefully Skaeve could teach him. He would simply do as instructed and hope for the best.
