[Zinn'Sunn Location] Tangible Enlightenment, Golem Goods

~*| Tangible Enlightenment, Golem Goods |*~

Description:

Set against the south west wall, on a quieter street of Phoenix district, Tangible Enlightenment is a small building, packed in tightly between two small neighboring stores. Like those buildings around it, its design is sleek, curved and the roof is tipped beautifully upwards it in a well crafted design. From a distance you’d think the shop was naturally part of the wonderful architecture that is much of Zinn’sunn.

However on closer inspection, a sign seems to be hanging at an awkward angle across the top of the entrance way.

[Golem Goods, Open, Usually]

Inspecting closer still, you can see the two windows facing the street have a dirty, grainy look to them and if you look really hard, you might just make out the men busily at work inside. Emanating from within the building there is a pungent and slightly nauseating odor, at least for those unused to it, as this is due to the rare metals needed in Golem crafting.

Once the Golem store might have been a luxury small home or expensive shop but as you walk inside, you can see the truth of it, there are three tables littered with potions and bubbling vials, chests full of old junk metal are open and stacked in the corner. Half finished clay and metal body parts are hung up across the eastern wall, some fresh but many are just collecting dust; further adding to the clutter, craftsman’s tools lie scattered about on every table in disarray. A heap of fresh bandages are packed neatly in the corner, along with surgical cutting tools and what looks to be a large jar of murky water, only with small black creatures crawling around inside of it.

Three miniature toy clay figures, wave to you as you enter the shop. A tiny clay human grins and flexes his mini muscles, a Gnome does a little dance and falls off the shelf, while the third, a miniature Lionoid, attempts a roaring squeaking noise. As you take in all the details along the walls and on the upper shelves, you can see all manner of toy clay Golems, some are locked in a wrestling match, others are staring in wide-eyed wonder at everything around them, a couple are soundly asleep, snoring and one or two are arguing about the things tiny clay Golems argue about.

At the back of the store, there is a room with a few steps down and a lower archway leading into it. The backroom is fairly dark but with an amber glow illuminating much of its insides, there is a scent of melted metal and worked clay distinctively coming from within the dim room.

If you walk into the backroom you will feel an immense heat, as metal is tempered here into iron and other oddities, some sort of large furnace sits in the corner giving off an overpowering warmth, though much of the gases are sucked upward, through a funneled chimney in the roof. Moulds of varying shapes and sizes line the western wall, one containing a very odd looking orange metal in a heart shape. An old kiln is on the northern wall, with large stocks of clay nearby, chipped stone boulders can also be seen in the corner, alongside a mound of fresh soil and earth.

There is a locked door, to the left of the inner backrooms entrance. The locked room acts as a cluttered storeroom, filled with boxes and chests, stacked high, one atop another. To call it disorganized would not do the small store room justice, its in utter disarray. You may on occasion, see another student about the shop but Golem crafters are a rare breed and so it’s unlikely you’ll see anyone but the two Kemite brothers, either working on a private project or a regular toy Golem. On a really chaotic day, you might also see an adventurous toy or two wandering or dancing aimlessly about the shop floor, probably about to be stepped on.

One of the two brothers and craftsman who runs the store, will eventually notice your waiting or wandering around the shop and approach you, bright and likely both awkwardly cheerful and talkative. The owners may overwhelm you with questions, just because they are so used to working with inanimate objects all day and have finally had someone walk into their shop.

“Serale, Tangible Enlightenment welcomes you for all your Golem training needs. We only stock miniature toys if you’ve come for an actual Golem but we will do some small, private orders if requested. As you can see we are only a small store but quite unique and specialist, I think you’ll agree. Any child would be safe with our yearly throwaway Golems, good for one year as a gift before they expire and perfect as playthings.”

Goods & Services:

A one year miniature gift Golem.

This cute toy fits in the palm of your hand and performs basic but playful commands. It can be shaped to the race of your choice and designed how you wish. Best of all, our Golems will naturally shutdown one era after purchase, preventing any mishaps or after sales care being needed.

Stone
- 500 Crowns
Iron – 600 Crowns
Earth or Clay - 400 Crowns

Secrets :

The Golems are tiny but will likely almost never go rogue or breakdown because they are such easy creations for the level 3 skilled craftsman and expire so quickly. We wouldn’t want kids toys going rogue after all! There is a simple and fundamental command built into the Golems when they are crafted. A command along the lines of: On this date a year from now you will cease to function. Also remember these toys are level 3 creations in terms of possible intelligence, thus some level of personality isn't without merit.

Private Contracts

We will do some small, private contracts, priced on a case by case basis.

We can shape a variety of designs or Golem types of your choosing, using Iron, Stone or Earth and Clay.

Secrets :

The Golem's offered here are up to the moderator and the current L3 Golem Crafting rules, as is the cost.

Training

An awakening and initiation to Golem Crafting, novice level training.

300 crowns for training and if you wish to keep the results, an additional 50 Crowns for the crafting materials.

Secrets :

The training focuses on Initiate level, Clay based Golems, which when successfully built, fit in the palm of your hand but are not very intelligent.

An enlightened look and apprenticeship into the deeper aspects of Golem crafting, apprentice level in Stone, Iron or Earth and Clay Golems.

We offer two types of apprentice training. The different training options will mean that either you keep the Golems you make or we do.

If we keep the Golems:

Base Training and Material costs.

Iron
– 800 Crowns
Stone – 750 Crowns
Earth and Clay – 700 Crowns

If you wish to keep the Golems:

Base Training and Material costs.

Iron – 600 Crowns + an Additional Cost per Golem
Stone – 550 Crowns + an Additional Cost per Golem
Earth and Clay – 500 Crowns + an Additional Cost per Golem

For each Golem built during your training, the additional cost depends on the size of Golems you are trying to build. If you are successful in your work, you can always keep the resulting creation. If you fail in a Golems construction, you still pay but we will salvage what we can from the attempt and you can try once again with no further cost.

The Additional Cost = 100 * size * size, where the size is in feet and represents the Golem's largest dimension, more often than not its height.

We are able to offer you this discount due to our years of well established supplier contracts within the city. If you buy your personal creations through us, we offer nothing but the best prices.

Secrets :

For example:

1’ = 100 Crowns
2' = 400 Crowns
3' = 900 Crowns
5' = 2500 Crowns

Five feet is a little bigger than you will be able to build successfully as an apprentice but this serves as a guide. Presently at their peak, apprentices can make Dwarven or Halfing sized Golems.

From a roleplaying perspective, the training cost is lower in the second option, as the shop can buy the feversteel and materials in a larger quantity, thus paying less than your average player, a saving which they can then pass on to their paying students. However the base rules for working out the cost of the Golem still remain the same, as per the games core rules. The craftsmen just want to tempt you with lower training prices so you spend more overall, a sneaky ploy on their part, especially as your work will likely be personal and important to you but amateurish to them.

NPCs:

NPC's Full Name (NPC's Title)
Azi Tao, Golem Craftsman

Secrets :
Name:
Azi Tao

Race, Age & Gender:
Kemite, 30, Male

Physical Description, History & Behavior:

Azi is the more silent of the twins, though behind his dark brown eyes, long black hair and modest features, you get the impression there is a great emotion and depth to the man. He is utterly honorable and quite wise, though completely engrossed in his work, with few social connections or interests beyond it. He can smith metal, which makes him the main choice for people who want to apprentice in iron Golem crafting.

Azi stands about 5ft 9 tall and carries himself well, his build is average but his reflexes are sharp and attentive. Azi usually wears common clothing but carries a sword by his side at all times, never speaking about the sword or revealing that he is in fact a duelist of old.

Azi will protect his work and his shop at any cost but treat everyone he tutors respectfully, expecting the same in return. He will charge fair and honest prices, avoiding arguments if possible and only offering his opinion, if he thinks it will benefit the person he’s speaking to or if his twin brother is being too brash.

In Azi’s dueling days he often represented lords or other officials at private duels to settle disputes, a demonstration of his ability is the fact he’s still alive. He had to retire when he developed a cough, common with Golem craftsmen. This cough has only worsened to a loss of breath with time, diminishing his natural abilities with the sword.

As indicated by his skill selection, Azi specializes in Iron Golems.

Skills:
L3 Golem Crafting
L2 Metalsmithing
L2 Medium Blades

The bladed skill is to simply guard the shop and its expensive goods, which he will do to the death.

Items or Property Of Note:
Brown Leather Gloves
A Red or Blue Fine Cloth shirt.
Black Cloth Trousers
A well made Steel Longsword.
Half the Deed to the Store.
25 Crowns

Example Speech Pattern/Dialog color:
Respect your creations and they will do the same.

Golems are like empty bottles, they become what you fill them up with.

Do not violate my trust, I am your mentor and your honour depends on it.

My past is not important, only the future matters to us now.

Can this NPC be used by players in self-moderation or training situations?:
Yes

NPC's Full Name (NPC's Title)
Ivu Tao, Golem Craftsman

Secrets :
Name:
Ivu Tao

Race, Age & Gender:
Kemite, 30, Male

Physical Description, History & Behavior:

Ivu has dark eyes like his twin, though shorter, fairer hair. Like Azi he is 5ft 9 tall and of an average build. He wears craftsman’s clothes at all times, usually protective gloves, a robe of resistant materials and a belt with tools upon it.

Ivu has a layman’s knowledge of regional politics and often speaks about them to his clients or students but other than that, he is focused on his work as much as his twin.

He is an honest man but not as patient as his brother. When it comes to people making mistakes or taking too long to order, Ivu would much rather be back working and will tell them as much if they hold him up too long. He won’t try to be overly rude when he lets them know, he will usually just be blunt.

Ivu has spent nearly all his adult life in the store, taking a brief course in local politics in his youth, that is before he realized he found tinkering with Golems was much more enjoyable. He believes he has the answer to all the worlds political problems and will often say so, usually wanting more rights for artisans and craftsmen, calling them the lifeblood of the city.

Ivu has no cough like his brother but he has a bad skin condition on his stomach and thinning hair due to the constant exposure to his profession.

As indicated by his skill selection, Ivu specializes in Stone Golems.

Skills:
L3 Golem Crafting
L2 Stone Sculpting
L1 Politics

Items or Property Of Note:
A Protective, Thick Brown Robe
Thick Cloth Gloves
Beige Cloth Trousers and a White Shirt
50 Crowns
A Dagger
Half the Deed to the Store.

Example Speech Pattern/Dialog color:
Serale, what can the finest Golem store get you today?

Despite what you have heard, our products are really safe, truly, we deactivate them long before they can cause harm, not that they would you understand.

Can I ask you to decide so I can return to my work?

Craftsmen are not recognized for the contributions they make, without our labor the city would be nothing more than a collection of hungry mouths to feed.

You cannot be serious; taxes on imports actually starve ordinary people of cheap prices.

Can this NPC be used by players in self-moderation or training situations?:
Yes

Factoid:

Secrets :

District: Phoneix District
Type of Location: Golem Crafting shop
Notability of Location: Rarely Known
Training/Employment Opportunities: Yes, occasionally materials such as metal, stone, clay, earth and fuel are needed to stock the store. The store offers training to Novice or Apprentice Level Golem Crafting in Iron, Stone or Earth and Clay.
Can This Location Be Self Moderated?: Yes

This is my first draft, so excuse the typo's and indeed its my first ever entry into realmcraft, as it didn't exist the last time I was really active!

I will also ask another character who knows more on Golem Crafting than I do to share their thoughts, i've tried to include all the relevant equipment in the description.

Than you i'd appreciate all the thoughts and feedback you could give me.
I do find it an interesting subject too and not one I've really seen gone into in depth before.

The base NPC's to level three were approved by Gossamer, as was a small store to be submitted to realmforge.

Wow, this looks amazing. I do have one question... why are the 'we keep the golems' training more expensive than the 'you keep the golems' training? Shouldn't this be opposite? Its cheaper if the group keeps the golems?

Please note, sometimes I'm easily confused so explain it! It might just be me! I want to find some cute 'golemish' images around to plant in the middle of this writeup, but I'm not sure how easy something like that would be to find. Otherwise, great descriptions! Id like to see this formated in a frame and some sort of building picture in Zinn'Sunn's theme, but I can help you with that if you'd like.

Thank you for the kind words

I did put an OOC comment about that into one of the secret tags but it was confusing as I had two, i've merged them now and I will try to work a little more of a direct correlation into the text, as it might be a common question at a glance.

In essence its not, the player still pays the Golems construction prices on top of the training, they just want you to buy your creations through them, as they get the metal at a discount bulk price.

If your making three 4 foot Golems in your training for experience, thats 1600 crowns times 3 plus the training costs, thats quite a lot for amateur work I think you'll agree.

However Game rules being what they are, they pass a luring discount on to the player in the form of a training reduction, rather than for me to try and alter a core rule of Golem crafting and having to seek approval.

I can add a toy paragraph or two , i've never done frames but i'll attempt them and a picture will be easy enough to find but again, i've never put one into a write up before. I assume these will all be html based but give me a short while to experiment.

Second draft has been finished!

I think this is waaay too much fun. Excellent job.

Personally, I would like to know what type of Golems the brothers specialize in, if any. If i'm not mistaken, aren't L3 Golem Crafters required to learn supplementary skills to add customization to their work? True, they only offer the simple clay/iron/stone via storefront, but what about the PC's who want a special one made, by 'Private Contract'? What kind of Golem's would they be able to get?

It is interesting isn't it

I'll be happy to add more detail to the custom order section, though I want to leave much of the detail up to the person moderating it for the sheer flexibility in the requests you might get. In the future you might let someone have a 6ft, fast Golem or you might think that overpowered, just as you might let them have a Golem who is a self washing table or again you might find that too technical, i'll leave the bulk of detail of the orders and their costs up to the mods involved.

I did indicate the specialties of the NPC's in the NPC templates themselves, one specializes in stone sculpting and stone Golems, the other metalsmithing and thus Iron Golems, which is why they can teach you those crafts.

I do really want to know what supplementary skills are needed for Earth or Clay Golems, I am not sure there are any relevant skills in the trade section, which leads me to believe they remain the 'standard' Golem for anyone with the crafting skill but without a supplementary skill.

Feel free to remove the Earth or Clay options in the future from the private orders or give one of the NPC's the relevant L2 skill, if this is not in fact the case. I cannot seem to find anything suitable to give them.

-edit

Okay, a little more detail has been added in the form of an OOC comment and an IC line on the choices.

I was working on this last time I was here, I know there has been a big change to well everything, but I still love the idea of one of my characters or another player having this as a small shop making toys for kids, and for enough money (materials) or an adventure gathering feversteel, golems for people.

It might not fit Paareth anymore but with permission I know a person who could take it over, basing it in another city of course. Unless I can work it into his story a bit.

I'd have to tweak the values to be representative of player level instead, and also what resources (wealth level or adventure) they could offer the shop to have the golem constructed.

I am also aware the skill is no more, so it would have to be changed to relevant tradeskills (unless it can be a skill under the new more diverse system).

Yah, you might want to take the original idea and put it up in a new thread, in the realmcraft for what ever city you plan on having it run in. Of course, most locations, unless incredibly unique or paramount to a city, or unless run by a PC, are considered unneeded with all the rule changes.

Otherwise, carry on sir.
