Aelyria was a cold and unforgiving place. It made no considerations for the weak, the spineless, or the unwary. The fact that the old man had survived for as long as he had vouched for his resourcefulness. Or craftiness, the dark elf silently mused. He was no fool. He had not survived the bowels of the Nightlands or horrors far worse than anything that Risthal herself could have conjured without knowing a thing or two about cunning.

The dark elf’s keen eyes caught the brief exchange between the old man and the bartender as the former suggested another tavern. If the woman was the least bit offended, she did not show it.

The gold coin that had been hidden inside the Vysstichi Lord’s closed hand flicked across the way and towards the informant. “I don’t,” he admitted, his meaning clear as his gaze maneuvered to the doorway, beckoning the old man to lead on.

If you’d be so kind,” he simply said.

He watched the human closely, not trusting him for an instant. It was equally as possible that the crone actually worked for Severen and was leading him into a trap, but even if that was the case, it would not be for naught.

As he prepared to follow the old man outside, he kept an eye on his surroundings, taking note of any who moved or shifted as if preparing to follow them.

The trap had been set.

With a swiftness that belied his age, a wrinkled hand escaped the old man's robes and plucked the golden coin out of the air. The man's keen eyes looked at Faust as the coin was moved to his mouth, and yellowed uneven teeth bit at it, before a satisfied grunt indicated that he was convinced the money was real. Hand and coin alike disappeared back within the folds of his robe and with a nod of his head, he turned towards the tavern's entrance.

As the Baron of Vortex followed, he didn't need to look far to find anyone looking his way. Many of the conversations had died down once more, and the dark elf's departure was studied almost as keenly as his arrival had. If he was looking for a suspicious gaze, there was no shortage on display. He was a vysstichi in Sacrum, after all.

The conversations only resumed once the pair had left The Green Fox and closed the door behind them. They started with a single, muffled voice, yelling some kind of racist jibe at Faust's kind, and it was met with raucous laughter.

In the street, the trio of drunkards were nowhere to be seen, presumably punching at shadows or laughing at their own inane jests.

As the old man moved, laboured steps hitting the cobblestones, the few other inhabitants of the street stopped to stare. Nobody appeared to follow Faust except with their eyes. Even in the darker parts of the city, the presence of a vysstichi gave people an excuse to exercise their curiosity.

The aged figure wasted no time in guiding the visitor through the city, and though his steps were slow, they were incessant, and the man did not at any point stop to rest.

Eventually, the shadows of tall buildings have way to allow the sunslight to shine upon the pair as they stepped into a paved courtyard. The road they had followed was one of three that entered the otherwise enclosed space, and they could hear music coming from a building on the opposite side to them. Peeling paint on a sign hanging above the door depicted a portly novice slumped over a barrel.

"That's The Thirsty Clergyman right there," the old man said, pointing with a wrinkled hand. "You sure you want to do this? I hear Severin is a dangerous man."

The dark elf fell into step behind the old man, the ostensibly courteous act nothing more than a maneuver designed to ward his backside from any hidden dangers that the informant might pose. His trust of the human ran no deeper than his love for orcs, which was to say that he had absolutely none at all. Snitches certainly ranked among the lowest rungs of society in the dark elf’s eyes, even if they did have their uses at times.

Under ordinary circumstances he might not have allowed the racial slurs that followed him outside the tavern to stand unaddressed; however, he had more important business to tend to. First and foremost, the one named Severin needed to be disposed of, and those who had made their beds with him needed to lie in them – permanently.

With the folds of his thick cloak clasped together, the Vysstichi Lord followed after the old man. He immediately noticed the absence of the three men who had antagonized him earlier. Whether their disappearance was born from the natural course of ordinary events or something more malevolent, he did not know, but his gloved hands remained near the hilts of the two blades at his sides.

Gods, when had Sacrum deteriorated into such a rat hole?

It was only a matter of time before they reached their destination, a shoddy-looking tavern that might as well have been the Green Fox’s adopted sibling. The crinkling of his nose was the only sign of the dark elf’s distaste, although when the old man sought his reassurance that this was indeed the route that Faust intended, his crimson gaze flicked towards him with a hint of veiled annoyance.

He was unused to people questioning him, especially the scum of society. In any case, he overlooked the faux pas if only because it could be attributed to the old man’s ignorance. Rodents did not have table manners, after all. Besides, the dark elf still had some use for him.

Then why risk his wrath?” the Vysstichi Lord simply returned, the silence that followed leveled to force some measure of discomfort upon the human. He honestly did not care for the old man’s answer. Greed. Survival. Excitement. There were a number of reasons why the snitch might have helped him other than money, but none of those explanations were relevant to him. All that mattered was whether he was right about Severin’s whereabouts or not.

Unless you’re interested in him seeing us together, I suggest you leave now before it’s too late.” Drawing his hood upward, the dark elf merely nodded to the human before proceeding towards the entrance to the tavern.

It was highly possible that the old man’s information would prove useless, but it was equally as possible that the man had led him into a trap. Either way, as he walked, the dark elf drafted a Force Shield around his body and prepared to enter the lion’s den.

The old man seemed confident enough in his sense of direction as the pair walked, though he did stop a number of times to turn back to look at Faust, presumably to ensure that the dark elf was still with him, or perhaps simply because the position that the Baron of Vortex insisted on taking meant he kept disappearing out of sight.

Once they were in the courtyard, however, the man's demeanour visibly changed, and his blue eyes showed a glimpse of...

...nerves?

...suspicion?

...fear?

His answer to Faust's question came quickly enough, however, and his confidence returned as he offered a smile and pulled the gold coin out from his robes and, just as before, it was lifted to his mouth and bitten.

The old man nodded as the dark elf lifted his hood, and he began to retreat, returning the coin into the folds of his robes as he turned to leave the courtyard, heading down one of the side streets. If he was returning to The Green Fox, he was not doing so by the same route as the pair had just traveled.

Faust's familiarity with arcana meant his Force Shield was settled around him before he'd even reached the front door of the tavern. That was fortunate, because some drunken 'genius' had decided to put a dartboard on the inside of the door and one such projectile was airborne just as the dark elf stepped inside. The dart bounced harmlessly off him, of course, but that rather awkward moment, when the dart clattered uselessly to the floor with its tip bent out of shape, gave the Baron of Vortex an opportunity to look around the room.

While the décor of The Thirsty Clergyman was very similar to that of The Green Fox, the clientele was anything but. Rather than the silent stares that he had received at the former tavern, these ones barely blinked at his arrival. Rowdy conversations continued, a group of men argued about something in one corner, while a pair sang (terribly) as they swayed in a teetering embrace. Even the drunkard who had thrown the dart was seemingly unperturbed by the disruption of his game as he scrounged about on all fours to pick up the damaged missile. The bartender, a stocky man with a thick crop of black hair, was similarly oblivious to the arrival of his new potential customer.

There were a few familiar faces visible in the din, too. Cyrus was not present, but his security detail was, the half-orc and the Nairu drinking quietly together near the back of the tavern. The driver was present, too, sitting on his own in a booth in what was presumably the darkest corner the man had been able to find.

He watched the old man scurry away, silently wondering whether it would be the last time that he crossed paths with the wily informant. Such men could be useful to have on one’s payroll, although that was assuming that their information proved to be more than hot air. Only time would determine whether the dark elf had wasted his coin.

Upon entering, he was immediately assaulted by the drunkard’s dart. An annoyed frown creased his lips as he followed the missile’s trajectory towards the man who had thrown it. What fool had placed a dartboard on the inside of the entranceway? With an exaggerated sigh, he surveyed the room, his crimson eyes swimming from one face to the next as he acclimated to his surroundings.

To his surprise, several individuals in the tavern were already known to him – Cyrus’ main bodyguards and the driver who had taken him to the The Green Fox. Coincidence? He was uncertain. It was doubtful that Sacrum had as many seedy establishments as places like Imperia, where the rule of law and religion did not exist, but what were the odds of running into them in such a large city?

Realizing that his presence had not elicited much of a reaction, he subtly stalked towards the half-orc and the Nairu, who were near the rear of the tavern.

Gentlemen,” he said, reaching for a nearby chair and pulling it towards him. “I hope you don’t mind me joining you.” He did not wait for them to invite him to sit. Having saved all of their lives, he supposed that he had at least earned the right to dispense with that courtesy.

Strange running into you here,” he said, straightening the folds of his cloak as he sat. “I’m surprised that you’re not with our little friend?

The drunkard on the floor muttered something unintelligible to himself and then giggled as Faust stepped over him. Unseen by most, the darts player would go on to prick his hand as he picked up the sharp, bent tip of the small missile, and he would spend most of the remainder of the evening sucking on his stubby thumb.

The half-orc was noisily slurping on a spoonful of meat stew when the dark elf made his presence known. His small, deeply set eyes looked up at the new arrival, but returned to the bowl in front of him upon seeing who it was. Clearly, he and the Baron of Vortex would never be the best of friends, but there was no hostility or disdain in his gaze; respect forged on a battlefield was not easily rescinded.

"Cyrus?" the Nairu responded, his voice quiet but deep. "He only hires us for the road. He feels safe in Sacrum. He must be the only cether who does. It's amazing how willingly people will overlook their prejudices for the right price."

The desert man's face had twisted into a sneer. Despite having the height that his employer lacked, the colour of the man's skin still put him on the outside of what most Sacrum residents tolerated.

Even so, he raised his tankard to salute Faust's arrival. He caught the attention of a passing barmaid and ordered the new arrival a drink.

"And you?" he returned, his tone softening as the half-orc continued to noisily eat his stew. "Bored of this cesspool of a city yet?"

The driver, meanwhile, appeared to not have noticed the dark elf, and was keeping to himself and his drink, his shoulders hunched as if doing so might keep him further concealed in the shadows.

As much as it offended his sensibilities to even be seen in the presence of an orc, the dark elf nevertheless spared the half-breed a slight nod before joining the pair at the table. Battle had a unique way of bonding the most unlikely of individuals, and their victory over the bandits in the highlands had certainly accomplished as much.

Still, it was a pity that the half-orc had not learned a few more table manners in his company.

Shifting his gaze to the Nairu, he inclined his head gratefully as the man flagged down a waitress and summoned another ale. “He retains you often then?” the Vysstichi Lord casually asked. When the woman returned with his beverage, he collected the mug between his two hands, his forearms balanced casually on the edge of the table. “I hope he pays you well.

Considering what he had observed during the fighting, it was no surprise to Faust had Cyrus had continuously employed the half-orc and the Nairu to protect him. Of all the guards in attendance during that trip, only those two had been worth their weight in crowns or however the Cether compensated them.

He was keenly aware of the Nairu’s question even as his attention drifted to the driver in the corner, who clung to the shadows as if he was a newborn babe latched on to his mother’s breasts. It was difficult to gauge whether or not the driver’s behavior was unusual as the dark elf hardly knew him. There were a number of reasons as to why the man might be skittish, but he was certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Sacrum has its charm,” Faust finally answered the Nairu. The subsequent shrug of his shoulders highlighted his general indifference towards the city. “I’m actually more interested in finding out who attacked us. Do you have any ideas?

The Nairu nodded when Faust asked after his employment status.

"He pays enough," the man said, casting a casual glance about the room before returning it to the dark elf. "We've guarded his caravans a half dozen times, but we usually stick to Vesta. We wouldn't normally go to Arium."

The half-orc grunted and put his spoon back into his bowl just long enough to speak.

"Ne'er been 'ttacked b'fore, neither," came the deep, guttural voice.

He grunted as he returned to his sloppy eating, but the Nairu was nodding in agreement.

"He's right. This was the first time we've been attacked."

He held his gaze for a moment, knowing it was largely due to the dark elf's involvement that they were still alive.

He snorted when Faust spoke of Sacrum having 'charm'.

"No idea who was behind the attack," he admitted, "but the scum you captured mentioned Severin, didn't he? Never encountered him myself, but word is he's based in the Grumblewood. Apparently he's a master of disguise, or something, because nobody can agree on what he looks like."

The man paused again, head cocking slightly to one side as he tightened his lips in curiosity.

"You planning on going after him?"

The dark elf casually leaned forward, balancing his elbows atop the table and then folding his callused hands in the air in between. “Did you find it strange that he hired you to escort him through Arium?” he asked the Nairu. Personally, that behavior was not particularly suspect to the Vysstichi Lord as merchants generally traveled where they were needed, but he supposed that it did not hurt to explore every possibility.

His eyes turned to the orc suddenly as the ugly brute divulged that the group had never been attacked before.

There were certainly suspicious elements about the pair’s tale, although none of it was particularly glaring to the dark elf. “Cyrus was fortunate to have the both of you when he did then,” Faust honestly commended. “Otherwise, I doubt that he’d still be alive.

When the Nairu inquired whether or not he planned on pursuing Severen, the Vysstichi Lord merely sighed. “I can’t have the highways beset by bandits. It’s bad for business. Unless, of course, it was an isolated incident.” he said.

Do you know where in the Grumblewood his hideout is rumored to be?
