”No Prisoners”

Moss got up and readied himself for another fight! (Continued)

Faust’s hasty nail trim was painful but it seemed to do the job of letting him hold his equipment normally again. And it was just in time, too, since the Prince of Har’oloth had to spring into action again! (Continued)

Sharinya was out of patience and so she unleashed her fury upon the dark fae! (Continued)

Everyone:

If not for his deft movement, Faust would have found himself peppered with the faerie dust -- much like his unfortunate human companion. Standing his ground and backhanding the pixie dust might have been a valiant effort under normal circumstances. But the frog prince’s entourage’s time in Fae’rel clearly suggested that they were in anything but a normal circumstance.

This time, however, Moss was wise enough to know how unpleasant the effects of pixie dust might be so the bearded blonde instinctively held his breath. Unfortunately, that was not enough for the pixie dust to affect his exposed skin and hair. This time, Moss felt his skin turn dry and heavy as if he was caked in mud or dirt. To Faust, Sharinya, and the others, however, it looked as though Moss had aged several decades within a few seconds!

From the back, Faust managed to hurl some mud and debris at the fleeing dark fae. A few were felled from the sky but Faust’s talents lay in death by sword not dirt. Still, his actions dissuaded what remained of the few who decided to attack the froglok’s protectors. Yet none of them would be prepared for the Faerie Queen’s wrath.

Buttercup’s screech turned into a nervous chirp when the wind around them roared into a miniature tornado with Sharinya and her allies safely in its eye. The artifact, the Crown, that granted her rulership and guardianship of Fae’rel shimmered again as it translated Sharinya’s will into a nexus of Elementalism. Faust and Moss could only watch as a huge wall of air ripple outward, repelling the pixie dust and sending the screaming dark fae far away before they inevitably plunged to their deaths!

When the vortex of air essence ceased, only Moss, Faust, Sharinya, and their companions remained. Any traces of the dark fae were gone.

Aside from Moss looking like he was at least seventy ordinations old, everyone seemed to be intact though the Froglok Prince was now wheezing and struggling to catch his breath. His beloved, the Laurellian woman called Olivia, was still pale faced and comatose. Tic and Toc somehow managed to dig trenches where they affixed the platform carrying both the prince and his consort with large leather straps to pin them down during the brief moment of inclement weather.

--

The rest of the journey through what was left of the Embersong Preserve was quiet and a little eerie. It was nearly dusk and based on the Senator’s map, they were supposed to reach the region called “Phantasmagoria Fields”. Moss realized that his eyesight was going bad and so Faust was forced to read the really terrible scribbles and sketches, each of them having to pass the map around before they deciphered a few more details: first, the blue and purple mushrooms were supposed to be powerful hallucinogens. But the chemicals were supposed to affect non-natives to Fae’rel to a limited degree; second, the Senator’s map warned about crossing the fields at night when the mushrooms were more actively sporing. But given the prince's condition, they quickly realized that reaching the Fountain could not wait until morning.

Of course, Sharinya was already familiar with the Phantasmagoria Fields seeing as it was part of her domain. Nilog and Buttercup could easily fly overhead and avoid the spores altogether. The Skyrider offered to take the frog prince with him ...but Tic and Toc outright refused the offer, telling the Faerie Queen that they were bound by a blood pact to protect the prince at all costs -- and they swore to never let him depart from their protection. This complicated matters since Buttercup was not strong enough to carry two cethars, a dwarf, and the frog prince.

By the time the last of the suns fell beneath the western horizon, the froglok prince’s protectors arrived at the edge of the charred Embersong Preserve. Before them was a field of silver grass with blue and purple mushrooms that dotted the landscape. Even stranger were the capped fungi: their size ranged from very small to enormous growths and colonies that resembled miniature mountains even from a distance.

Tic and Toc quickly wore their leather masks with tubing that connected their breathing apparatus to their hilarious huge packs. Unsurprisingly, they still only had enough masks for themselves, Olivia, and Lakso. Tic gave Moss a painful pat in the back (the human felt something crack) while Toc gave Faust a cheery thumbs up before they started to beat a path through the shimmering fields beyond.

It was not unheard of for Moss to act impulsively, and as soon as his backhanded swipe caused more faerie dust to land on him, he realised he'd erred in precisely that manner. After a silent curse escaped his lips, the human braced himself, anticipating another bout of extreme hair growth. When that didn't happen, he wondered if he had somehow managed to avoid any consequences at all; if the faerie dust had actually missed him or simply proven ineffective.

And then he went to move.

The first step felt unexpectedly laboured, and the ones that followed were even more so. It was only then that he became aware of how weighted down his arms felt, and the sight of his skin drying only made him more worried.

But Moss quickly found himself staring into a terrifying wind, as Buttercup screeched and he found himself - along with his companions - shielded from its effects. Adrenaline pulsed through him, and it was only once the faeries had been sent to their deserved deaths that he was able to catch his laboured breath.

He was still catching it when the group arrived at the edge of the Embersong Reserve. His equipment felt uncommonly heavy, and his body felt more weary than he might have expected after such a journey, and he took the opportunity to let his knapsack slip off his sore shoulders and take a few moments to rest. He groaned as his body protested when he had to find his feet again, and with some effort, he collected his items and followed Tic and Toc with slow, weary steps.

The tiny queen’s command caught him by surprise, but he nodded approvingly. “Ready,” he agreed, and without another word, he prepared to spring into action. They did not have any more time to waste, not if the Froglok Prince had any chance of surviving.

Instincts alone guided him as he evaded the faerie dust. With his blades gripped firmly in his newly-manicured hands, he was about to launch a whirlwind of steel at the pesky dark fae when another whirlwind, a veritable one, suddenly surrounded him, Moss, and the others in the Froglok Prince’s entourage.

Even if he had not been touched by Phedos himself, he would not have mistaken the raw display of elementalism that danced off Sharinya’s fingertips. The sheer power of her spell left him breathless, and he watched in awe as she scattered the insubordinate creatures as if they were nothing more than flies.

He supposed it was safe to say that the Froglok Prince was in good hands, albeit small ones.

Thank you,” was all he could manage to say to Sharinya, and his voice was nothing short of sincere. Without the faerie queen’s intervention, they probably would all be looking like-

Gods, what happened to Moss?

Unfortunately, there was no time to figure out how to undo the dust’s effects upon his comrade. Faust spared the mercenary a sympathetic glance and tried to assist him as much as he could during their journey, which, admittedly, was finally yielding some progress.

It was not long before they reached the next step of their destination, which greeted them with the sight of a field of colorful mushrooms. The sight of the ominous spores had Tic and Toc donning masks of some sort, although the fact that the Cethers did not offer the others any such contraptions was slightly unnerving.

Considering what had happened to them thus far in their journey, Faust was hesitant to follow the Cether into the grassy fields, but the pair seemed confident enough. In any case, with the faerie queen by their side, he was somewhat more relaxed and convinced that they could deal with whatever adversities they encountered.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped forward and followed after their guides.

With the dark fae taken care of it was obvious that they needed to keep moving. Up ahead were the “Phantasmagoria Fields” and that never boded well for those who were not prepared.

"Faust, Moss if you have any kind of cloth that you can cover your nose and mouth with then I would suggest you follow the example of Tic and Toc. It will at least offer some protection as you traverse the Fields." Sharinya advised her companions. The key was to keep out the spores if they were let loose.

Turning to Niolg and Buttercup " We can fly above the Fields and watch for any trouble ahead."

She was concerned for the safety of the rest of the group but this was the nature of Kel'rondar perhaps the mushroom would sense that the travelers meant no harm and allow them safe passage.

”Phantasmagoria”

Moss looked old but the feeling of being ragged and tired soon wore off. Thanks to his initial instinct to keep himself from breathing in the pixie dust, he was spared from the worst of its effects. So aside from looking very old with silvery white hair, any fatigue he felt likely stemmed from their rather exhaustive journey. (Continued)

Faust kept a close watch on Moss and saw that the human looked like he was faring better. Aside from his ancient appearance, the pixie dust didn’t seem to have any more adverse effects on his companion. The cethars quickly created a path that wove under, around, and beneath the massive toadstools. And all around them, Faust saw the unmistakable shimmer of gold and silver spores! (Continued)

Sharinya offered some advice to her fellow travelers and then flew upward with her Skygaurdian protectors, up and away from the strange and dangerous Phantasmagoria Fields. The Faerie Queen knew her domain and understood Kel’rondar intimately yet she could not shake the feeling of darkness growing just beyond her periphery... (Continued)

Everyone:

Even nighttime was strange within Fae’rel.

When the last of the suns’ rays were draped behind the Western Realms, the mushroom fields started to come alive with light and unnatural music. The silvery grass hummed and sang as they passed, made alive by wisps of air and movement. It sounded like ghostly strings, creating a strange arpeggio in a minor key. As they trudged along behind the cethars and their precious cargo, Faust and Moss slowly noticed specks of gold and silver in the dimly illuminated air...

The spores! Having been distracted by the Field’s ethereal song, Faust and Moss hardly noticed the fog of spores that was growing all around them!

--

High above the Phantasmagoria Fields, the Faerie Queen and her protectors traced the path of their earthbound companions.

What they didn’t expect, however, was the sudden sensation of vertigo. The mushroom spores, it turns out, were not exactly tethered to the Fields below!

--

Moss … was standing in front of an armory. He knew this smell ...of people, spices, stone, fired coals, and horse manure. He was back in Aelyria Prime.

“Wonder if your sword is ready,” said a soldier next to him. Moss knew his face. Then a second later, Moss remembered everything about this young man. It was his good friend, David. They met as recruits and fought with the Jade Legion together.

Before he could respond, they were standing inside the forge. It was hot and it made his leather armor stick to his skin. “This yours?”, asked the smith. He was an old man Moss knew as ‘Bort’. He presented Moss with a fine steel sword, recently polished and sharpened. It was standard issue for the Legion. “You boys joining the northern campaigns?”, asked Bort.

“Das right”, said Dave proudly. “Gotta teach those greenskins a little manners, eh, Moss?”

--

Faust was … in Har’oloth. But this was not the home he remembered. It was the home he mourned. He could hear the thunderous blasts of sorcery and elementalism hammering at the fortifications beyond his mother’s throne room.

He knew this smell ... of death, of torment, and the dark promise everything held that fateful day. Even on his fiftieth ordination, Faust was still an adolescent. Yet when he glanced down at his half-grown form, he was whole and pure and true. His palms barely carried the scars, calluses, and blood he would carry in the coming decades.

”Sslig'ne ussta dalharuk”, Matron Kal’adriel Kitrye’veresi said to her dread knights. Protect my son.

--

Sharinya was ...in the EverGrove again.

She remembered this feeling of closeness, of warmth, of unmistakable natural beauty. The gold, crimson, and sapphire leaves of the ivory trees that circled the sanctuary swayed slightly but there was no breeze. Sharinya suddenly realized that Nilog and Buttercup were nowhere to be found.

But in the center of the clearing was a creature she recognized immediately: it was a faun. Circling the small horns of his handsome head full of light brown curls was a silver crown.

“Your Majesty”, said the Lord of Kel’rondar in his light tenor. "I have been awaiting you. Our kingdoms, I'm afraid, are dying."

Despite his weariness, Moss forced himself to push on, and he was relieved to discover that much of his tiredness was simply a result of the group's long journey. The aged form that had taken over his countenance was little more than an appearance. He had walked much of the Aelyrian Empire in his time, so he was mercifully able to recognise the difference between his tiredness and an actual lack of strength.

As he followed Tic and Toc, he took in the sight of the giant mushrooms around them, and before he knew it, he was surrounded by spores. He did attempt to avoid them - he batted some away with his heater shield - but they were so numerous and close that he could evade contact entirely, and then...

Moss' nose twitched at the familiar scent of horse manure. He looked about, and where he thought he might see Faust, he saw David instead. He cocked his head slightly, brows furrowing in confusion, and then...

The stench of the blacksmith was strong, but not unfamiliar. The sword looked sharp enough, and he knew Bort was a fine craftsman. He lifted the blade, turning it in its hand to catch the light of the flames from the hearth.

"Aye," Moss nodded in agreement, "someone needs to bring them into line!"

He grinned at his companion, then, and back to Bort. With the confidence of an inexperienced and brash young man, he was sure they would make short work of their enemies.

….and here we go again. Nothing was as it should be! Niolg and Buttercup were nowhere to be seen, the field of mushrooms had to all intents and purpose had simply vanished in the blink of an eye. Instead she was in the Ever Grove greeting the Lord of Kel'rondar.

"It has been a long time my lord." she said not realizing just how long it had been "There is much amiss and I am afraid you may be right in your estimation.

Is the Ever Grove safe? What other news do you have?"

The last thing he remembered was seeing the gold and silver spores . . .

When he opened his eyes, he automatically blinked. The reaction, however, did nothing to change the surreal landscape that surrounded him. He was inside the ancient Kitrye’veresi stronghold. Something felt off. Even so, he remembered it as vividly as the sharp planes of his face. Every wall, door, and furnishing.

And yet, there was discomfort in familiarity.

Explosions from outside the Kitrye’veresi throne room startled him. Instinctively, he backed away, his feet shuffling hastily beneath him.

Eyes wide with terror turned to his mother in panic as she ordered the Dread Knights to protect him. But where was she going?

He swallowed nervously, then balled his hands into fists by his sides. The screams of the dying could be heard everywhere. His brother. His father. Were they among them?

Like the proud noble that he had been raised as, the young dark elf tried his best to steady his breaths. To show no fear. Unfortunately, his crimson eyes could do nothing to hide his true feelings.

The enemy was coming.

Moss heard David laughing but his words seemed to blur together as if they were talking underwater. That small detail, however, seemed less important all of a sudden -- because in the next instant, Moss was hunkered behind a long line of trees! In his hand was the familiar weight of his trusted standard Imperial gladius. Bort certainly did a good job and the edge stayed true. Though Moss couldn’t exactly remember why it was dripping with black blood...(Continued)

Sharinya couldn’t remember how she got to the EverGrove. There was a nagging thought in the back of her head. Yet she was here and so was the faun prince she knew so well. His silver crown framed a sad but knowing expression as he shook his head. “We do not have much time, I’m afraid,” he said in his beautiful tenor. “Chaos has returned, Your Majesty, and that dark tide raises all ships. The minions of Xenarius have awakened.”(Continued)

Faust felt like he was watching himself in the third person. The events he experienced seemed jarring and the scenes shifted uncomfortably from one place to another. It almost felt as if invisible hands were perusing over his memories, sifting through his thoughts like pages in a book. When his ancestral home faded from view, he suddenly found himself in Demios, fighting accursed locals with a blue dragon; then the figures of the Demiosians transformed into insectoid Xet and Faust was now fighting in the fields of the Western Realms! (Continued)

Everyone:

The faun prince stood and his hooved hind legs click-clacked against the marbled wooden steps leading from his forest throne. He looked no larger than a small boy but Sharinya knew that he might be as old as Kel’rondar itself.

“Can you feel the weaves of Chaos? Surely, the Crown must have warned you …?”

Then strange scenes of burning lakes and glass trees flashed inside Sharinya’s mind. She heard a Mother’s crying from a broken Heart and a low chuckle followed by the smell of a thousand rotting trees…

--

Dave shouted something indistinguishable next to Moss and the dark haired legionnaire pointed out toward the trees ...and there were no less than four orcs running toward their position!

Moss quickly saw that they were no running in any noticeable formation. But there was bloodlust in their red eyes! Two were armed with crude clubs but one wielded a stone hatchet and the largest of the four carried a steel halberd that must have been looted from a fallen legionnaire.

--

Faust heard his mother’s screams and his vision blurred between the mushroom forest and the memories he was being forced to relive.

--

Sharinya had to blink a few times to clear her eyes. But she was soaring above the mushroom fields again. Nilog and Buttercup was some distance away, easily gliding on an updraft. A cursory glance below, however, revealed that things were not going as smoothly for the Faerie Queen’s landlocked companions.

Moss was swinging his sword at unseen foes while Faust was covered in tendrils of fungi and lichen! Further ahead, Tic and Toc were battling what looked like golems made of mushrooms! The cethars were putting up a fight with their strange gadgets and contraptions but it was a losing battle given that they were also trying to protect the froglok and his consort!

Xenarius! She had strong memories of the last time she crossed paths him. It had been a hope that they would never cross paths again, but here he was attempting a comeback.

“I had hoped we had would never have to cross paths with him again, Lord Celwyn. It was rather wishful thinking on my part that it would be so.”

She told the stag as she recalled their last meeting.

Lord Celwyn remained silent as Sharinya passed the Shield of Diana on to Dwermond, but when she spoke the words of her wish, the mighty stag bowed deeply and humbly, as if asking for forgiveness. "Kelrondar and Fae'rel are always interlinked together," he said, "and though it is not within Nature's Power to break the free will of natural creatures, such as the Fae, it is within our ability to open the passage way to Fae'rel." He gestured to a lake beyond the colorful Evergrove. "To reach Fae'rel, you have but to enter the lake and walk its waters to the other side. There, you shall reach the forests that will touch the very borders of the Fae Kingdom, and your rightful throne. Compelling the other Fae to return, is a matter of their choosing and your persuasion, Your Majesty."

"But your reign extends beyond land, beyond territory, and beyond sovereignty," he said. "For it is a governance of a people, a protectorate over a race; you are the High Queen of the Faeries, the Ruler of Fae'rel - and Fae'rel is more than just the land, the nature, the trees -- it is the life that coarses through the veins of all living creatures. But know that your stewardship is not one without hardship; indeed, the Dark Fae, and those who serve Xenarius will forever be your enemies, and will threaten to upset the balance of power in both Fae'rel and Kelrondar."
The last time they had crossed paths she had good friends at her back, Espa, Dwermond, Zytron Iriborn, Evelyn Aubergine, Alvasqua, Cepalico Kiel the Arch Druid, Lachdanon, Aelana, Arielle Sayrehn, Xalfahar… and Snibly, they were all gone now, she knew not where.

“What of Prince Thelnig?”
she asked

One minute she was asking a question and in the next breath she was back flying above the field of mushrooms. It did not take more than a second to realize that everyone attempting to pass through the mushrooms was in serious trouble.

She called to Niolg “Do you think that Buttercup would be able to pluck Moss and Faust to safety without succumbing to the spores? Do not attempt it if you have any doubts, I need you both as I fear this is just the beginning of a bigger fight!”

There was a sense of confusion when Moss found himself somewhere without remembering quite how he'd journeyed there. Nor did he recognise the black blood on his blade, but there was little time to contemplate such things, for there were orcs approaching, and the bearded blond was sure they wouldn't be interested in a discussion on the matter.

Gritting his teeth and tightening his grip on his falchion, the human braced himself for the impact. Dark grey eyes studied the four fearsome soldiers that were approaching, assessing just how outnumbered they were.

"We need to both target the same orc to begin with," he grimly observed. "That will help us to even the odds a bit."

And with that, he waited for the orcs to approach, sidling up close to his companion to form the smallest of shield walls. If the halberdier was first to strike, he would seek to deflect the weapon away to one side and then step inside the beast's range and press his advantage. Otherwise, he would simply attack whichever orc got closest.

The black marble floor was perfectly smooth beneath his feet as he ran to the rear of the throne room. His mother’s seat, the symbol of House Kitrye’veresi’s authority, waited for him like a pair of open arms wanting to embrace him. He would be safe there. The fighting would cease soon, he knew, and his father and his brother would march through the sealed doors of the throne room and declare their family’s victory.

Or would they?

The screaming continued. The doors boomed on the other side of the room. Shouts of warning sounded from one wall to the next.

The dark elf closed his eyes, but when he opened them . . .

He was himself again. Sort of. His swords were in his hands, yet there was something different about them. Soulseeker was clutched in his left; his right, however, hefted the obsidian-hued Blood Winter. It had been many years since he had wielded the latter, having exchanged it for the masterpiece that had been gifted to him by the Sword Dancer, Laurina Dilae.

There was no little time to ponder the irregularity as his eyes swept towards the great blue dragon in the distance. Klue and the others were fighting nearby on the sands of Demios. He recalled the battle as vividly as he was living it now.

He dug his heels into the sand and charged . . . right into the snapping pincers of a Xet!

Panic flashed in his eyes as he instinctively crossed his blades in front of him to parry the insectoid’s attack, which was surely aimed to decapitate him. How he had ended up on the battlefield against the Xet, he did not know, but he fought on beside his companions, legionnaires and militiamen alike.

For the survival of the Empire, he surged forward.

Grandmaster Swordsman"Throughout Aelyria's history, there have been tales and stories of mythological warriors sometimes mistaken for blessed or divine entities. Godlike fighters, the Grandmasters are forever remembered for their valor and are known to break the physical limitations seemingly at will, capable of Masteries that lesser fighters can scarcely comprehend, let alone attempt. Often called one-man armies, Grandmasters are able to defeat countless lower-proficient fighters without much difficulty. Their physique is a testament to their life-long struggle to achieve this near-perfection; through enough conditioning and practice, a Grandmaster can withstand amazing amounts of physical pain and anguish. The dwarven skyrider shook his head grimly at the Faerie Queen. There was no guessing what the spores might do to him and dear Buttercup. Though Sharinya sensed the griffin’s anxiousness building even as the creature tensed and stirred in her reins.

Further below, Moss appeared to be battling creatures in his mind even as vines and luminescent fungus started to creep over his boots and legs! Faust, on the other hand, was slowly being cocooned by the silver grass even as tiny blue mushrooms began to sprout from his skin and hair!

Tic and Toc were furiously whittling down fungal golems where they were, fending them off with an assortment of gadgetry that sprayed what looked like acid at the foul creatures while the other threw glass spheres that erupted in white fire!

--

Moss was tangled up with some orcs now. They were in the mud, grappling, kicking, and punching. He could feel the heat from his foe’s husked mouth and smell the stench from the orc’s scarred green skin. Just as Moss was about to grab his fallen weapon, however, he was momentarily startled by a burst of white light.

The unexpected flash seemed to startle everyone at once ...the orcs and legionnaires collectively stopping what they were doing to stand up and stare in that general direction. Even the sound of the entire world seemed to slowly dim, as if Telath was holding its breath.

--

Faust parried, fought, spun, and darted through the battlefield with uncanny precision and speed. Or, at least, he should have been. Instead, the grandmaster felt as if the world around him was moving a little slow. Even his movements seemed blurred -- and not in the fashion that he was usually accustomed to. His opponents’ movements also felt a little reluctant and uncertain, like marionettes controlled by an unfamiliar hand.

Occasionally, he sensed something amiss but a vague presence pushed down those doubts in his mind and he was able to momentarily ignore the inconsistencies around him. For instance, he could remember the battle in Demios vividly and he could have sworn that the Xet were not present there; yet entire legions of Xetan thralls and armored insectoids were now spilling from the ground and destroying the Fire Isles. When he engaged them, as duty and conscience told him to, he kept feeling as though his legs and arms were encumbered and heavy.

Then something bright washed over the battlefield ...and in that instant, everyone seemed to halt at once and slowly look up at the source.

Sensing Niolg's reluctance for himself or Buttercup to attempt removing Moss and Faust from the field of mushrooms "I understand your reluctance to get any closer to the spores.

I am a loss, nothing is as it should be! Niolg let us fly ahead to determine how much farther there is for them to go and perhaps get an idea of what else is out there.
"

The thought crossed her mind that there were creatures that ate mushrooms; bears, deer, mice and chipmunks... it was a thought and one she could act upon!

There was no end to them.

They threatened to outnumber the very sand on which they fought. It was as if the pristine white beaches had been a prime breeding ground for their ilk. Abominations, more like, the Vysstichi Lord bitterly thought to himself as he studied the Xetan swarms before him. For some reason, the presence of the insects on the Demosian shores seemed extraordinarily incongruous with his memory, but there was little time to reconcile the irregularity. Indeed, they were here.

He fought with every ounce of strength in his body, his hands and feet moving in perfect coordination. And yet, his years of mastery notwithstanding, he felt strangely sluggish as if clutched by invisible fingers. He did not understand the source of his lethargy. Perhaps it was due to natural fatigue, otherworldly spellcraft, or Xetan foul play, but he was resolved to battle on.

The Fire Isles were on the brink of being overrun. The lives of people that he cared about deeply were at stake. It had been a long time since he had thought about a certain half-Esh’lahier woman and her children, but they, too, depended on him to survive.

With a defiant growl, he surged into the Xet even as they continued to spring up from the sand. His blades flashed in the sunlight, or at least, he thought they had, until he suddenly realized that the blinding light was coming from above.

Was this finally the end?
