[The Den] A Chance Encounter [Ylva, Rhystlin]

What had first started as a simple camp for refugees had apparently sparked and took on a life of its own which shaped up into the town that was commonly called Sancta Nova. This was the first time Kael had traversed the streets of this city though he found it to be unlike any settlement he had visited before. A prime example was the structure that he had just walked into. While he had gotten used to buildings of wood and stone with some metal added in from the mishap buildings found in certain districts in Ziel Aerca he had not been prepared to see a tavern that had been constructed of naught but metal.

Situated in the center of the tavern floor a large fire blazed with a section open to the sky above to allow some of the access heat and any smoke to flow freely and not congregate among the tavern’s patrons and leave them with watery eyes and coughing fits. This brightening found the young Vagaran clad in his typical traveling armor. Darkened leather overlaid with tightly woven links of metal over his torso. Metal that extended down to just above his elbows. Two hilts were visible over his right shoulder along with the outer rim of a shield he had slung over it causally as he approached the building. A short spear rested with its blunt end upon the tavern floor and the tip angled up towards the ceiling.

A black cloak had been pushed back over his shoulders as his dark gaze settled across the room before he finally located a suitable place to sit. Before he moved his gaze turned towards his traveling companion before he stepped forward. “Long trip. Perhaps we should seek out a horse before we leave,” he muttered. Perhaps they would be able to find suitable gear here for the journey that lay ahead of them. Then again… perhaps they’d simply find a good brawl if the situation permitted. Only time would tell.

Ylva had been to Sancta Nova before although it held little by way of memories for her. It had been a stopping point on her meanderings, a place to see if any of her people had come down from the mountains, escaping black fog. They hadn't come to this place, although someone had certainly given her hopes up on the matter, and Ylva had left the settlement shortly after having her hopes dashed. So, in visiting it again, she moved through the streets with Kael neither familiar or unfamiliar with the territory, her white hide-and-fur carry sack slung over her shoulder and her furred hood down to reveal her pale features.

She moved with an easiness as Kael picked out a table amidst the rest, loosening her pack from her shoulder to bump it onto the ground--it made a clatter, filled as it was with her climbing equipment and other such essentials. She plopped herself onto a seat and found herself forced to adjust the sword that bumped comfortably at her side. The Rhagrhnd woman grinned at Kael, leaning her elbows into the table in easy companionship. "Yes, long. Longer still, hm? A horse...maybe. But not these lowland things, yes?" The face she made suggested Ylva's opinion of all things lowlander was still running pretty strong. There were things she was good with--ale (she ordered one now, along with some hot food)--but most things she found odd. Money being one of them. "Your lowland horses they are not good for the mountains. Get a trhaksiino. A good mountain horse, thick coat, strong hooves, best for climbing of rocks. Maybe we stop in some Rhagrhnd place and get one...or two. They will have good mountain horses." She paused, considered. "Still...maybe not so good for the tallest mountain. There might be walls to climb and the horse would be left. Maybe on the trip back. Small sleds to pull and lift...that is better."

She leaned back in her chair then, elbow draped over the back rest and her legs sprawled in the direction of the fire. The fire might not have been close enough to really do a whole lot but Ylva was all right with that; it was cold in the lowlands come winter but when compared to the mountains, the cold of Sancta Nova felt like spring. As such, she was already regretting the array of furs draped over her. She plucked at her cloak as she sat forward, pulled it off of her and setting it to rest on her chair behind her. Sleeves were rolled up. Now she could be comfortable.

"We will need many things before we go back to the mountain. Firm metal to go around shoes, to protect against a slip. I will make you iksa--I do not think these people would make good ones, hm? Best you get many layers, keep you warm. It will be cold, yes?" She dimpled at him and slid her hand around the mug that was presented to her. Ylva liked to drink and when she drank she wasn't shy about it..

The Den hadn't had any cider, but the half elf had made do with hot soup, King's Ale, and a warm fire to drive the chill from her stiff and tired limbs. She had promptly went to sleep at a local inn after that, grateful for the comfort of an actual bed - despite the cold sweats she would awake to a few times during the darkening. It was no matter. The frequency with which the nightmares plagued her had become something of a ritual by now, and despite the grim and haunting nature of their passing, they certainly did come to pass, each and every time. For now, that was enough to allow her to quickly drift back to sleep again.

As Sancta Nova was her first stop since having left Nexus Prime, Rhystlin was in no real hurry to be back on the road again. After awakening that brightening, she reluctantly shrugged herself back into her leathers, buckled her sword belt, and pulled her thick wool cloak over her shoulders. Having been satisfied with the food and warmth she had encountered at the Den, she drifted her way back in that direction for her morning meal.

And so, her relatively long legs stretched out before her, the half elf was seated comfortably in a chair nursing a mug of light ale when Kael and Ylva arrived. Her cloak had been removed and sat piled in a chair next to her, warmed by the nearby fire. She eyed the two with interest, as the female in particular appeared unlike any of the locals Rhystlin had encountered so far. Granted, she had not been in Sancta Nova very long, and had not by any means seen the extent of it. At any rate, the Den was full of its fair share of unique patrons.

Despite the variety of inhabitants, however, the new arrivals in particular had piqued the half elf's interest enough that bits and pieces of their conversation often drifted their way back to her. She was not listening in on them intentionally, but at some point the word "horse" cropped up in the mix of words and she could not help but look up from her mug and glance in their direction. This was a topic she had been interested in as well, as she had caught a carriage in this direction and had yet to find another means of transportation out of Sancta Nova.

Tentatively, she leaned in their direction, unsure of how the two would react to her intrusion. "Pardon," she began, "But I heard mention of horses. Might you know, by chance, where they're offering them around here? I'm afraid I haven't been in the city very long."

She decided that it may not have been the best idea to admit she was not from around the area. But she'd be sure to keep her wits about her and - hopefully - avoid being led into a situation that left her with no valuables.. or worse.

Kael listened to her response about acquiring a horse and he took careful note of her reaction to the idea of the acquiring of a lowland horse. Despite his desire to defend certain “lowland’ things he could not find cause to argue the point. After all she knew best when it came to the mountains. However, the word she spoke made little sense to him until she went on to explain that it was in fact a mountain horse. It sounded like a strong horse which caused him to nod in favor of that idea.

Several layers would be preferred. I am still not quite accustomed to the… cold air we will be facing and anything ye would be willing to make would be appreciated,” he said as he nodded his head in genuine respect. He had grown to put aside his pride and trust the knowledge she possessed about the mountains. He would have said more however his attention was suddenly drawn towards an elf who was apparently a newcomer to the city as well. The young Vagaran offered her a steady gaze in response for several moments before he finally offered her a slight shrug of his shoulders.

My first time in the town,” he said while he took a quick glance around the room. While it might have been mere coincidence that she asked that but one could never be too careful. The unwitting often found themselves ambushed by those previously viewed as being in need or helpful. He would have stated the same in regards to Ylva though he figured she might want to speak for herself.

While Ylva had taken her mug in hand Kael simply held his in check while periodically causing the liquid within to swish around. While he sometimes welcomed the sensation brought on by a good drink, especially with night after night plagued by those fething nightmares, he silently pondered if it was best to keep a sharp mind... especially considering where they were.

It went unnoticed at first but he had steadily gained an understanding with each brightening that passed. Slowly he had come to recognize the growing sense of ill content he had come to associate with being within what most would call a "civilized" city. It had been a startling revelation. More and more he found himself more at ease out in the wilderness. He was uncertain of what he should do about harboring such thoughts so he had ultimately decided to keep the revelation secret even if it was only for the moment.

Ylva's eyes shifted to the elvish girl as she leaned into their periphery. 'Elvish' might have been a bit over-generous but the delicate build was there. The Rhagrhnd's opinion of elves was about on par with her opinion of lowlanders, given that they looked frail and weak, lacking the strength and hardiness that Ylva took a good deal of pride in. Now a dwarf... Ylva could respect a dwarf without hesitation. But an elf...? She might wear a sword but could she use it? It was the sort of thing that required a demonstration rather than blind faith.

Her attention flit back to Kael as he answered. Stoic, as usual, Kael offered about as little as possible. A product of his discomfort with women, something she had been picking up on the longer she traveled with him. Hard not to, when it was just the pair of them and any close proximity seemed to provoke unease. As if he'd never been with a woman before! Then again, maybe he hadn't. It might explain a few things. But the thought seemed too preposterous to consider altogether too seriously.

Nonetheless it lit a mischievous little smirk over the Rhagrhnd's smile as she in turn leaned towards the elvish-looking woman and brightly informed her, "He means 'I do not know' but he is man and they are..." She bobbled her hand back and forth in an unsteady gesture. "Not so good at saying when they do not know things, yes?" She casually draped her arm back across the headrest of her chair again, sprawling into that comfortable, relaxed posture. Kael was tense, unable to relinquish himself into his drink and the atmosphere of the room. Ylva had no such compunctions.

But when had she ever? Even when first meeting Kael, rather than keeping on her guard she'd turned her back to him and easily slept without a terrible amount of hesitation. It wasn't even a matter of trust but rather a confidence that, should anything happen, she would be able to handle it.

"Here, sit. Join us, yes? I am not so new to this place but it is not so known to me that I can tell you where the horses are. Maybe we stick together and find them, yes? We have some small things to find ourselves. More eyes, they are better in some cases." The words came a lot easier now than they had when she had first descended from her mountain home but her accent was still terribly thick and rough. It didn't seem to perturb her in the slightest. "I am Ylva, this is Kael. He says you may sit with us." Even though he'd said no such thing and she certainly hadn't looked at him to make sure that it was in fact all right with him.

The half elf raised her brows at the male's response. Quiet type, then. And the way the woman had initially looked at her made her feel as though initiating conversation might have been a bad idea. But then the woman began speaking, and there was a humor there that Rhystlin had not expected, but appreciated. Perhaps she had only assumed the nature of her expression out of worry she had overstepped her bounds. Rhys chuckled at the woman's remark about men. To be honest, her godfather was sort of the same way, sometimes.

Although she hesitated at first, unwilling to intrude on the group when the male had extended no such offer, Rhys eventually nodded her head and switched from her current place to one near the two. She shifted in her seat to adjust any weapons or belts that may have been in the way and nodded her head to the woman.

"Sounds like a sound plan," she said in regards to keeping an eye out for things. A fair deal, to help each other out in an unfamiliar town to them all. "It's good to meet you, Ylva... Kael." She turned to the man and nodded to him as well. She hoped he wouldn't take offense to her presence, at least. She wasn't sure what their customs were on greetings, as the woman had an accent she could not place, so she did not offer a hand. Adjusting one of her gloves, she glanced about the room instead.

"Do you come from far?" she asked instead.

The stoic Vagaran simply crossed his arms while Ylva poked at him in jest. His stern gaze remained fixated upon the elf as she sat down and Ylva gave voice to his acknowledgement. Yet despite all of that the expression on his face remained stern as if he sought to peer directly into the elf’s soul as if to ferret out any ill will she might have possessed for them. Deep within his eyes a slight mischievous nature could be gleaned as he leaned forward so that his elbows would rest upon the table.

Aye never trust the knowledge of a man…he might lead ye to fall down into a hole or something,” he said with the hint of a smirk.

His gaze turned towards Ylva as he hinted at their first encounter when she had literally fallen and couldn’t get up. Granted it was not a hole but he figured it was best to leave that part misleading. In fact he did not elaborate upon any of those words however. He sought to make light fun to further lighten the mood but he did not seek to mar her pride. When the elf spoke of it being good to meet them Kael responded with a slight nod.

His fingers idly scratched at the stubble on his cheek as he pondered on a reply to her last question. Far really depended on one’s perception of what far truly was. Rather than going into a lengthy answer Kael would offer his reply in the form of but a single word.

Yes.”

Ylva bunched her nose in Kael's direction. "Aye," she mocked back at him before continuing loftily, "That was the fault of a male." She wished the dog was there now with the pair of them but it had been deemed too much trouble to haul the dog along with her to the frozen peak she wished to climb. It wasn't even so much that it would be a burden for the pair of them--she was used to hauling Cherhcsa around--but the poor dog would freeze his male-bits off likely faster than the pair of them would. Well, than Kael would...since Ylva had no male-bits to speak of.

It was perhaps lucky for the three of them that Ylva was the chatty sort. She curled her fingers around her mug and leaned forward so that her eyes peered over the rim, slipping back and forth between the slight elvish woman and the hulking human man. The one was uncomfortable the other perhaps less so but not inclined towards lessening the discomfort at the table. The Rhagrhnd took a sip of the stuff, savored a little over a flavor she didn't generally get to enjoy so high up in the mountains, and leaned herself back again, cradling the mug against her chest.

"Kael, he is the town talk person, yes? So talky." A hand uncurled from the mug, her thumb bopping up and down against the rest of her fingers and she mimed chattiness. "But maybe we say where we are from if you tell us a name, yes? You lowlanders do not declare such things so all can see." Those same fingers brushed over the scar on her cheek, a gesture clearly meaningful to Ylva if not to the elvish woman.

"Though I think your elf names are long, hard to say, yes? Maybe I give you name instead?" She grinned as she slanted Rhystlin a look, sizing her up. Nothing came immediately to mind. Most elves Ylva had encountered were delicate, wispy things and this woman was generally no exception. Most elves she had seen carried that sylph-like build into their clothing. This one was suited to fight, leathers, weapons and all. Then again, she didn't look entirely elvish either. Sort of like the half-elvish woman Ylva had met with the dragon.

Her eyes lit then on the pin, silver with its dragonlich. Her mouth curved into a mischievous little grin. "Dragon, hm?" she indicated the pin with a small movement of her hand. "It is good to meet you, Dragon."

oocL.o.lll

Rhys could not help but be amused at the playful bickering that transposed between her two new companions. Despite this, she could tell that Kael was certainly not the conversationalist, giving her the impression that he was either not keen on the more social aspects of life, or was just that uncomfortable with his surroundings. He didn't seem the nervous sort, although the tavern was surely busy enough to make its more introverted patrons uneasy. But then again her guardian had always been the same; straightforward, no-nonsense, at times even "grunts-for-answers". There were situations in which that sort of communication was very much preferred.

She turned to Ylva and grinned at her observation. She imagined the male as the town crier boisterously announcing the brightening's news through the streets and couldn't help but laugh. But then she blinked at Ylva's request for a name, leaned back in her chair away from her mug, and determined she would drink no more of it. She was really losing her head, it would seem.

"My name? Gods, I hadn't realized I never told you. It's Rhystlin. But a lot of people just call me Rhys." She shrugged her shoulders, her countenance a strain between disbelief and apology. "I suppose I'm more tired than I thought I was." She laughed. "Elven names can be difficult even for me, but my father was human, so perhaps that's why it was decided my name should by easy to pronounce." That would make her origins clear enough.

But then her eyes drifted in the direction Ylva was indicating, realizing that the pin was rested there at her breast. It was a relatively recent addition to her wardrobe, so she sometimes forgot throughout the brightening that she had pinned it there that morning.

"Oh. This." Her hand came up to it without much thought to the gesture, her gloved fingertips brushing against the metal that glowed with the orange hue of the firelight. "It's the symbol of House Kitrye'veresi," she explained to the both of them. "My liege is Faust."

If they knew the High Lord's name or had any opinions of the man, she was sure she would soon find out. But there was no hiding her allegiances now.

Kael opened his mouth to offer a retort to Ylva’s declaration that it was in fact the fault of a male that she had been found stranded as she was. It was all for naught as he could not form the words. He knew this to be true and he grumbled softly. He had won that little bout which prompted him to forgo his typical avoidance of ale and quickly picked it up once it had arrived. He sought the relaxation one found at the bottom of a mug to loosen the tongue. He was dead set on gaining the upper hand in their round of jests… and if he had to drink the tavern dry then so be it.

Kael offered her a wry look as she made the gestures with her hands as if she meant for it to speak. When he lowered the mug Kael wiped his lips clean of the sweet liquid that had escaped his mouth and he smirked slightly though he was momentarily distracted when she asked the elf her name. It was only right since their names had been offered up after all. Silently he plotted his recourse for Ylva yet when he heard the name of House Kitrye’veresi spoken aloud his gaze immediately sought the elven lass out. The mug remained stationary against his lips until he heard the name Faust and he nearly choked on the ale spitting some of it out in his surprise.

The spilt ale all but forgotten the young Vagaran narrowed his eyes slightly as he really looked at her this time. The last time he had seen that particular swordsman they had fought as allies in Ziel Aerca. The very day he should have fallen…the etched lines of his face and his stern gaze softened as he once more wiped his lips clean. “Ye are sworn to him,” he asked as if in disbelief. Kael held a deep-set respect for the elven sword master and honor saw fit to extend such respect to those who serve him. “Were ye instructed to use that blade by y’er lord then?” If not for the table blocking his view his green eyes would have drifted to the blade. Instead they remained fixated upon hers. With more force than he intended Kael set the mug down upon the table as he leaned forward and for the first time he seemed particularly interested in her reply.

"Ah. Not all elf. This explains some." She made a small gesture, a finger down and up to indicate the full length of Dragon. It raised her opinion of the other...somewhat. "Reese." Her tongue couldn't quite wrap itself around the name. Not really. It fought a little with the light pronunciation. She shrugged and magnanimously offered, "I will call you Dragon. More easy, yes? More fierce than the elf name. It is not bad thing...to be a dragon, hm?"

Virhyla hadn't really intended to start a conversation about the little pin that caught her eye. That it was meant to be anything other than pretty decoration...well...Ylva was more than surprised to learn it. The Rhagrhnd woman's brow furrowed as Dragon explained its meaning and what it meant. Unfortunately for Rhystlin the words came out too quickly and meant very little to the mountain girl whose people had few titles. You were either a rhit, cherhc, h'drhin or verhlet. If you led any of these groups then your title was further distinguished with a 'sa' tacked to its end. That was all. There were no lords, no thanes, no governors, none of that hierarchy to be found.

But Kael seemed to know. She flicked a look towards her larger companion, sticky now with drink, vaguely amused that something had stirred his curiosity. "Ah. It takes talk of men to make you speak?" she teased...largely because she really had no idea who this Faust was. The rest of Dragon's words had mostly fallen on confused, foreign ears. What was a Kitty-versey? And was a liege anything like a legion?

She sipped at her drink to hide a moment's distraction, a fleeting bit of unhappiness, and settled into quiet. It was a curious thing to suddenly see Kael so animated so she tried to narrow her attention on him rather than let her attention wander. Stupidly wander.

Focus.

Dragon. The name amused her, but she did not mind it. It was indeed more fierce-sounding than "Rhystlin". If it was easier for the woman to pronounce, then she was free to refer to her in a way that came more naturally to her.

But it would seem names other than her own were of greater interest to the male in the group. When she mentioned Faust's, Kael managed to almost spit out his ale... or did. Partly. So it would seem the name was familiar to at least one of them. She could not tell the underlying reason for Kael's shock and subsequent interest, however, and grew wary - not certain as to whether this connection of hers was offensive to him or not. There was a great degree of racism towards the dark elves, or at least Rhys had seen growing up, even when sights of their kind were uncommon. She could not help but feel some measure of protectiveness over her commander's honor, and so she attempted to tread carefully with her words.

"Yes," she confirmed, "Though... no, he did not teach me to use the sword." She would not mind continuing her tutelage under the baron, but she was not sure his time would permit for such instruction. "He mentored me... in magic, though."

The hesitation of this admission was obvious, but warranted. There were many who were strongly opposed to magic, even aggressively so.

"Do you know him well, then?" she went on. Hopefully she could figure out the nature of Kael's surprise and determine whether or not it was a good idea to step away from the conversation.

Kael offered Ylva little more than a smirk to her question before he returned his attention to Dragon. The look stark earnest in which he spoke and that had been etched upon his face slowly turned to something that more closely resembled disappointment before he muttered, “Magic? Hmmm.”

Kael scratched the back of his neck when questioned though he had taken an immediate notice to the lack of sound coming out of Ylva which to say the least was different. It was then that he noticed she was attempting to pay attention to him. A whimsical smile marred his look of disappointment as he returned his gaze to Dragon.

Who doesn’t know of him,” he said. He did not do this to avoid answering the question in full. In fact he did that more to poke fun at Ylva in the event she didn’t know of one of if not the greatest swordsman alive. The young Vagaran’s eyes shifted to the mountain woman briefly to determine if his suspicion held any merit. With that said Kael set back and casually began to nurse at the contents of his mug.

Granted his intentions were not entirely comical in nature. No he wanted to distract the mountain woman from the fact that her Dragon was in fact a mage. He wasn't entirely certain on how she would react so he attempted to lighten the mood and try and ensnare her curiosity.

Ylva sipped at her drink and shifted glances one between the other as she listened to them talk. There was a brief blink of surprise in hearing Dragon utter the word magic and Ylva straightened some, curiosity peeking through her as she once more sized the woman up. Dragon was full of startling little facts. But before she could press her own answer, she was catching Kael's sly look and his seemingly innocent query in regards to who did or did not know the Kitty-verse man.

She arched her brows right back at Kael and offered a pert, "Ah, yes. Who does not know of the Kitty-verse?" She raised her mug in acknowledgment of her own lack of knowing with a wry grin. "He is not so great, this Kitty-verse, that he is known so high in the mountains. You lowlanders, you think all know of your great deeds and your great names and your big titles." She flapped her hand dismissively with a small bark of laughter that settled into a shake of shoulders as she muffled the noise with another sip of her drunk. "Your idea of self may be big but from the top we do not see you. Even if you are so tall and so big." She eyed him pointedly.

Ylva's attention swung back around then to Dragon. Kael had been trying to distract her, not that Ylva was in the least bit aware of it, but her curiosity had been aroused and she was like a wolf on a scent--not to be shaken. "You know magic? You can turn into great animals? Bears and wolves and things? Make ants run maybe and flare big lights?" Ylva's idea of magic was really quite limited to what she had personally experienced...which was to say very little indeed. "Magic is not so much done in the Rhagrhnd. A few there has been talk of but they are not many."

Well, she wasn't a masterful swordswoman taught by one of the greatest warriors alive. That was about enough to lose Kael's interest.... immediately. That was okay, Rhys was at least glad that she could walk away from that conversation without the shape of a fist firmly marked on her face.

She couldn't help but stifle a laugh, though, at Ylva's pronunciation of her commander's surname. How high and mighty it would seem for a great Vysstichi house to be named after a child's cat. The quirk of a smile remained on her lips as she addressed the woman's interest in her magical talents. It was sort of funny; she had lost one's interest and gained the other's. She almost felt like a juggler.

"Animals? I think.. that would be a druid. Or perhaps a shaman." Her brow bunched into a frown and her eyes turned upwards as she thought. "Ants run? I can't say I've ever tried. Now big lights.... maybe." Actually, she hadn't tried that either. Could she flare big lights? The projectiles she had made hadn't been very bright, they had just... taken shape.

"But I can teleport. I can make shields, throw energy. Move things around with my mind." She wriggled her fingers for dramatic effect, even though she didn't really do that when she cast. At least, she didn't think so.
