And as the chaos continued to rage and grow around them, the four ran - or, in the case of Kate, waddle hastily - back toward the entrance to the underground. The undead before them wheezed and reached out to impede their progress, but a few well-placed swings by the swords, goblet, and Spar's torch cleared the way.

Something creaked and then crashed behind them: the fire had turned into a conflagration that would soon consume the whole building. As they dove beneath the arch and onto the downward leading steps, the echoes of a gleeful, high-pitched cackle came from behind them. "It's alive!!" Shrieked the voice of old Maria, somehow audible through all the other sounds of the undead attack and the fire. "HE'S ALI-----!"

Another crash, the door swinging shut behind them, and the sounds were abruptly muted. Something thunked against the closed doorway - possibly one of the undead - but they were already on their way toward the relative safety of the tunnels. Down... and out.

There was another passage, as it turned out - when everything had settled and everyone had caught their breath - that would let them out quite close to the gateway that led out of the undead quarter. It was no trouble to get there - unless one counted Kate's interminable sobbing and quiet moans as trouble - and from there it was easy enough to sneak back out into civilization. For one reason or another, they didn't come across any undead on their at all: perhaps they were all still gathered at the church, the smoke from which they could still see rising up in the distance once they'd made it back out onto the streets. It looked like other buildings around it had caught fire too, so perhaps the whole mess was just going to burn down and solve that problem once and for all.

Maybe. If they were only so lucky?..

Spar and Kate left them just beyond the gate; Spar especially seemed little inclined to meet up with any elements of the law, and he had the excuse, in any case, of taking care of his sister. They parted civilly enough, if a little cooly, from Rhystlin and Ylva: their alliance had been based on a temporary confluence of goals, in any case, and now that that no longer existed there was nothing to keep them together. They disappeared around a corner just as the old guard who'd sent them and their friends in what seemed like ages ago came hastening forward to greet them. He looked concerned, relieved - and, best of all, alive.

  Congratulations! That's a wrap!
