Cutting the Gems 1 (Self moderated, Private)

Timestamp: 1st of Ponitus, in the Season of Winter, Era XVII

Leto arrived back at Epik's place, and immediately went to work. He'd have to practice cutting cabochon's if he was ever to learn how to work with the basic jewelcrafting kit that he had gotten. Cutting gems was like a fine art, and he had to be very delicate and careful with the gemstones that he had, since he only had three of them, raw quartz that is. All he had was his basic jewelers kit, which didn't include a forge or a stone tumbler, supplies that he'd have to use later when he actually had the money to get them.

Once he ran his own store though, he'd surely have a stone tumbler in it, as well as a forge, so that he'd be able to make beautiful works of art with his gems that he would have from all over Aelyria. He needed to work on learning the cuts though, and practicing them, so that he'd be even better at them. Looking down towards his quartz as he set it upon the table, an then pulled out the jewelcrafting kit, he smiled, and then looked at each of the tools.

First things first, he'd have to set up the little vise that came with his jeweler's kit, so as to be able to hold the first gem in place, the quartz that is. As he did this, he's hold it in place, and take out a marking utensil. Using that, he'd smile, and start to mark up one of the gems, drawing a circle around it for where he'd cut it, so as to make it entirely circular. Then he'd draw another line to give it a flat side, and finally one more for where it would be curved on the other side. That would be his cabochon cut, though, he wouldn't cut it just yet...

As he sat there looking at the gems, he felt a presense behind him. It was none other than one of the servants that took care of him while Epiktetos was away... wherever he went that is. Looking towards her, she smiled, and then asked, "Is there anything I can get you this brightening, young master?" Leto looked towards her and then said, "Just a glass of water... cutting these gems can be very tedious and without drink, i may not survive through it..." He chuckled a bit, and then turned his head back towards the gem.

Now, how shall i cut this gem today? he thought, and then looked towards his jewelcrafting kit to see what tools he had within it that he could use to cut the gem. Firs t he would take out the file, and start to file away at the flat end, using the vice to hold the gem in place as he did. Working dilligently on it, he would work on the flat end till the servant returned with a glass of water. Brushing away the quartz dust, he would work on the flat end, and take a sip of the water that was brought to him. Turning his head to ask the servant something else, she had disappeared.

It's strange, that everyone here seems to disappear at the blink of a crown, he thought, and then turned his head back towards the gem he was working upon. It was starting to take shape, and that gave him pride. Soon he'd have to take out the grinding wheel though, and use that to work upon the curved side, but that wouldn't be until he could finish up with the flat end that he was currently working on right now...

The jewelcrafting set he had bought wasn't particularly a good one, and only had a handheld grinding wheel. That would have to do for now, with what he was doing, so he took it out, and began to use it. Grinding down upon the first stone's top, he would carefully start to grind it into a curve, and then make it sort of a dome as he worked at it. As tedious as it was, Leto enjoyed doing, it and working at it to make it look good. Then tradgedy struck, and he grinded a little too hard upon one side, cracking it. Looking towards the failed gem cut, he sighed, and then took a sip of water.

It wasn't everyday that one messed up, but Leto was still a beginner, and hadn't had much practice since he had been in Secyclion. Well, Practice makes perfect, and if you messed up once, chances are that you'd mess up again. This time though, he'd be more careful with the grinder, and what he was doing with it. He did intend to sell these gems back to the merchant after he was done cutting them, and if they were good enough, he might fetch a better price than he had before when he was just purchasing them. For fiftey crowns a pop, he might be able to sell them back for double if the cut was good enough.

As such was his goal, he would start to work upon the second gem, setting the first dented one aside as it would not do for now, and he'd have to get a different one to make up for the first one being ruined...

As Leto thought about the second cut, he began to slowly grind the gemstone down, curving it as he did, and then working to make the curve as perfect as he could possibly get it. It was difficult sometimes, but one had to have a knack for doing things like this, as well as a passion for it. Carefully grinding it, he sighed, and then set his stuff down for a moment, taking a break. Sipping upon the water the servent of Epik had brought him, he brushed his brow a bit, and then sat forwards in his seat once more, working upon the gemstone.

Finishing the curve that was on top of it, he would then work at creating a dome out of it, as was the cabochon cut, needing a domed top, and a flat bottom. They were useful as buttons, and he could probably sell the cut gems back for double what they were raw, if anyone would find some use for them. The uses of the cabochon cuts were not many, as it was a beginner cut, but it was something that Leto had a passion for, jewelcrafting in general, and something that he would absolutely love to become a professional in. Perhaps even owning his own store by the end of the season.

That would be difficult though, seeing as how he was still learning, he'd have to become an apprentice before he could own his own shop, and working at this gem cut would get him enough experience to hopefully move onto the next step, then again, if he kept ruining these raw gems, it would be hard enough to get the experience needed, but as they say, practice makes perfect...

Continuing to work upon the second gem cut, Leto's mind was racing upon certain events that had happened recently. He was continuously careful with his work upon this second gem, not trying to cut it too wrong, or escape the tradgedy that had hit with the first gem he had tried to cut. Perfecting his technique, he would start to work upon the back of the gem, trying to grind it down to a flat surface, now that he had completed the domed top of the gem that he was cutting so carefully. What would Epik think if he knew how much Leto was into jewelcrafting, or how much the boy enjoyed working with jewels and precious metals.

Perhaps he'd make something for Epik in the future, a ring of some sort, that was beautifully crafted, with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. That could be something he worked on in the future, when he was much better at jewelcrafting, but for now, he would just work on a single cabochon cut, with the quarts and grinder that he held within his hand. As he worked upon it, he brushed the sweat from his brow once more, and then said to himself, "This is getting a bit tedious, but oh well, once it's done, it will be done..."

As he said that to himself, he hoped that the cabochon cut would come out perfect, but he wouldn't know until he got the flat end of the gem cut, and made a cabochon quartz cut out of it. That would be the masterpiece, and perhaps he could sell it back to the vendor that he ahd bought them from, and try to make at least a little bit of money off of what he was crafting, even at the low level that he happened to be at right now...

After finishing the cabochon cut, the flat end anyways, he began to round off the top of it once more with the grinder, the abrasiveness of the metal rubbing away at the gem, and grinding it down to a fine dome. He has learned this technique from Niven, the jeweler that had taught him almost everything that he needed to know about jewelcrafting. But then he realized he was doing something wrong again. He saw that the second gem wasn't looking as perfect as he thought it was going to look. Working at it, he wondered why, and then realized that he was supposed to attach the gem to the dowel rod, and grind it against the grinder that way.

So, after working at it, he glued the flat end of the gem to one of his dowel rods, and started to press it against the grinder, moving in a way so as to round off all of the edges of the top of the gem. In this way, he'd hopefully manage to complete the cabochon cut within a candlemark and a half. It took him a fair bit of time, but in the end, he came out with a partially cut gem, that looked much like a cabochon. Yet again though, it was a gem that probably would sell less than what he bought it for, considering how badly he had screwed up.

It had been awhile since he had cut any gems, and he knew it took practice to make things perfect, so he had to work on it, and make the gem perfect. He only had one more gem to practice on, but perhaps he'd be able to complete at least one cabochon cut this brightening, instead of screwing the third one up as badly as he had the first and second. Yawning a bit, he decided to take a half a candlemark break to grab a bite to eat before he continued with his gem cutting...

Once he had finished eating, he would return to his work, and look down towards the final gem that he had to cut. Cutting this one would be the last of what all he could do for the day, and in doing so, he would have completed some form of practice and hopefully gain more experience in the matter of jewelcrafting and gem cutting. It was all the same thing really, and he would hopefully find that cutting the gems took patience, and required more than skill to do so. But he had all of the patience in the world, as he knew that he needed the practice, and that it was good that he would work on the gems he was working on, even if he managed to screw them up.

Taking the final raw gem of quartz, he would take out his grinder, and start to cut the flat end of the gem. This was the start of his cabochon cut. Working at it, he would make it as flat as he could, and then would examine it carefully, his sapphire gaze looking down towards it, his eyes glowing with enthusiasm that he was going to get the gem cut correctly this time. He needed to make it work perfectly, for himself, and for others, as he needed the practice, and needed to get something right in his lifetime, and cutting gems was what he fancied, so he would work to make them as good as possible.

Sighing, he would set the gem down, and lean back in the chair, his toga that he was wearing would slide down, revealing his chest. As it did, he didn't mind, for it was a bit hot within the house, and a servant brought him some water so that he could continue working without having much trouble of dying of heat exhaustion. The heat didn't bother him much anymore though as he would carefully work upon the gem, finishing the flat end, and then taking out some of the dop wax, and sticking it to the dop rod that he had in his jewelcrafting kit...

As Leto worked upon the gem, he would start to think about his life. So many things had happened in the past few months, but that didn't bother him, as he was learning a great deal of new things, and preparing to learn how to jewelcraft better. He would hopefully start to understand the nature of jewels, gems, and the like, and become a much better artisan. Working at the quartz, he would carefully start to grind a curvature on the opposing side of the flat end which was connected to the dopstick. As he worked on it, he smiled, and allowed his sapphire gaze to take in the full beauty of the gem, even if it was only a quartz gem.

He would combine his precious metalworking, as well as his jewelcrafting to make things that nobody else in this world had made, artifacts even, legendary works of art that one might only think of in legends and epic tails. He would learn to use the signes of gems, and had a great many aspirations about jewelcrafting, but he would have to practice more, much much more, if he was to get anywhere with it. Working towards finishing the gem that he was currently working on, the boy set it down a second, and wiped the beads of sweat from his face.

Picking it back up, he would continue to work upon the curvature of the cabochon cut, and make sure that it looked as perfect as he could get it. Sapphire orbs carefully watched as he made every grind as good as possible, for a beginner, and worked to make it absolutely beautiful. He was only a beginner, but his gem cutting experience was getting better. He couldn't wait till he was a journeyman, and had learned how to craft the rubies that he had found within the gem mines of Secyclion. Thinking about it, when he finally opened his shop, he'd have to hire men to go into the mines and reopen them to start mining raw material for him to work with, and create beautiful works of art...

As he worked upon the curvature of the gem of quartz, Leto watched carefully as he moved it up and down, grinding it into almost a half of an egg shape. Making cabochon cuts was really all he knew how to do, and working on it, he would soon be ready to start his apprenticeship... if he could find a master jewelcrafter within the city of Secyclion. The city had gem mines, and was apparently it was a major source of trade for the island city, so he figured there must be at least one or two masters that may be willing to take him under their wing, and work with him till he was ready to open a shop of his own.

Finishing the curvature of the gem was the most important thing right now though, as he continued to work on it, attempting to make it perfect in every way, shape and form. The egg shape was starting to show as it was supposed to, and Leto worked towards moving the quartz up and down upon the grinder, grinding it to a sufficient curve, and making it so that he would be able to detach the dop stick soon enough. But first, he set it down to take a break as a few candlemarks had passed since he began his project with the three quartz, and was ready to finally finish the last of them.

His patience had not been waning, and he was working diligently as his sapphire gaze watched what he was doing very carefully. He had all of the time in the world at the moment, and would continue to work. Perhaps Epiktetos would lay with him tonight, he thought, as he worked, and then cleared his mind of the perversions that he dreamed of about Epik sometimes, and began to focus upon the gem again. Finally finishing the gemwork on the curavature of the cabochon cut, Leto smiled, and carefully detached the dop stick from it. Now all that was left to do was polish the gem, and then he'd hopefully have one good gem cut out of the three he had started with, and perhaps could sell it back for a little more than he had bought the raw material for...

Finally, he was upon the last leg of working upon this gem, the polishing of it. Taking out the buffing wheel, he would start to turn it with his hand, and gently place the quartz upon it, working at polishing off the dop wax that was left over, and then working on polishing the quartz to make it look as perfect as possible. It had pretty much taken him all day to get to this level of work, and even though he had started out sloppy, he would hopefully go out with a bang, as his expertise in jewelcrafting happened to be a basic understanding of it, but he was working diligently and patiently enough to make sure things would be right in the end.

Polishing the curved side down, he would carefully move the gem up and down upon the wheel while turning it with his hand, and making a fine finish so that the gem happened to be very smooth. Finishing the polishing, Leto smiled as he looked upon the work he had completed. Two ruined gems, and one completed one. Well, hopefully next time he wouldn't wast a hundred crowns, and would manage to make the raw gems into beautiful works of art, albeit simple ones now, in the future, he would hopefully be working upon items that would make the king's jewelers look like trash.

His goal was a simple one, and one that he would work towards as fast and decent as possible. He wanted to become a grandmaster jewelcrafter, but knew that it would take quite a bit of time before that goal was ever accomplished, so for now, he'd settle on just becoming an apprentice, and opening his very own shop to start gaining some form of revenue so that he didn't starve to death in the streets of Secyclion, though, he doubted that he'd starve to death while living with Epik, as the man seemed to take very good care of him. Finally finished with the polishing, the boy smiled, and decided that it was time for a nice warm bath to follow up on the hard work he had just completed, after cleaning up his tools and work area...

OOCThread completed... hopefully
