General Information

"Secyclionia. A land so old given life once more. The red rocks still stand, and they will for eternity. The volcanoes may rage, yet the womb of the lands will never yield. They rise; proudly from the roots of the Eunesian Seas, guarding the well of secrets and wild islandic beauty of Secyclionia." -- Agaue Ionnidis, Poet and Philosopher

Geographical Location

Secyclion is the Eastern group of Islands of the Eunesian Isles. Ieffreon, Olympia and Chelseanna lies Westbound, and it is only slightly bigger in size to Olympia. Imperial Historians believe the strange claw-shaped Island came to be when a volcano eruption whose center now lies below the Nephele Bay exploded, and with the large amount of magma escaping it's core, the volcano collapsed to the seabed, leaving what a caldera which would be known as Secyclion in the aftermath of its destruction.

Like many of the Eunesian Isles, Secyclion is surrounded by deep waters, with a natural harbor within the Nephele Bay. Despite being sheltered from both sides by the natural curvature of the island around the Bay to protect the seas from the natural elements of strong winds; only the most skillful of boaters would dare to maneuver the waters due to the large reef rock formations (that are believed to have been formed in the volcanic catastrophe that formed Secyclion) that poses a danger to the unskilled and unfamiliar boatmen.

Because of the high volcanic activity on the island, coupled with the high humidity of the region, Secyclion was once known as the 'Mirage Island', for it appeared on good days where the visibility was clear, and seemed to completely disappear into an envelope of mist and smoke on other Brightenings. Observers from Olympia and Ieffreon used to observe the strange occurrence, yet dare not steer their ships near it for fear of being lost in the mists.

Brief History

Secyclion was one of the earliest inhabited Isles of Eunesia. Ask the typical native and they would tell you that the rest of the islands came to be occupied only when some of the Secyclionians living in the past decided to seek a better life than the harsh terrains of Secyclion. Not much is known before the caldera came to be formed, but the earliest settlers were the seafaring Vagrans, who, drawn by the strong physical beauty of the island decided to settle down.

Despite the steep walls of the caldera and plunging cliffs on either sides of the Nephele Bay, the fertile soil of volcanic residue allowed crops to prosper, and Secyclion soil today is still highly sought by serious gardeners all around the Empire for their rich mineral contents.

The 'Toichos Kikkimos', or the Red Wall, is the stretch of cliffs and caldera formation that over watches the Nephele Bay. So named because of its distinctive brick red color formed by deep volcanic residues embedded in the soil, this was also the first point of contact by the Vagrans. Exploration beyond the cliffs and the caldera only began roughly fifty ordinates ago, to the gentler sloping Northern plains, where newer City regions such as the continue to spring up. The North-Western portion of the island that borders Chelseanna continues to remain relatively unexplored and thus unknown.

It wasn't until Ieffreus Polytropos Panthoretes arrived upon Ieffreon did contact was established with the rest of the Eunesian Isles. The Imperials brought law and order to the island nation, as well as introduced the notion of trade, which Secyclion is heavily reliant on for goods which are hard to produce locally; and together with the rest of their sister islands, joined the great Aelyrian Empire.

Climate

Like the rest of their Eunesian counterparts, Secyclion experiences a relatively hot and humid Summer and a cool, breezy winter Autumn. Rain falls plentifully during Spring, while Winters are marked by frost waves that is never brittle enough to translate into snow. The climate of the City is also largely dependent on the location on the island because the mostly arid regions of the cliffs and the caldera is usually hotter and more exposed to the elements compared to the North-Eastern regions where groves of trees help to alleviate the bristling summer heat, where heat waves occur sparodically once or twice in the Summer, stretching over a cycle or two.

Cyclones and tropical storms are common in the Summer, and while the cliffs and mountains that had protected the Secyclionians for generations continue to perform their task silently, the lower lying regions in the North-Eastern regions are much more susceptible to those natural disasters, which sees the need to have stronger buildings that are able to contend with the forces of natures.

Another big part of the Secyclion climate would be the monsoon season, which stretches from mid Winter to the first two cycles of Spring. During these periods, Secyclion is marred by heavy rain, which makes it dangerous for many fishermen, as well as those living on the caldera due to mudslides and flash floods.

Terrain

The general terrain of Secyclion are the remains of the gigantic volcano whose center has sunk beneath the Nephele Bay. The Secyclion caldera, one of the rare and unique natural sights of the Empire occupies the South Western portion of the island while the North Eastern region is immediately marked by a steep drop of the craggy edges of the caldera where the newer settlers opts to reside. Believed to be layers of volcanic ashes that eventually settled down into the seabed, the estuaries have, over the Eras, hardened into land, and contains a high mineral content due to the mixture of freshwater streams and the salt water of the sea.

It is believed that mangrove swampy marshlands occupy the North-Western tip of the island, though it still remains a speculation due to the largely unexplored area. The highest point of the island is 'Rhea's Reach', which stretches deep into the air, and is usually completely obscured by the constant spew of volcanic ash that balloons around the island. Impossibly steep, no one is able to truly discern the true height of the mountain, though it is generally considered to be the highest point on Secyclion

Volcanic activity is still evident throughout the island, with both dormant and active volcanoes scattered about, though the two most prominent ones are 'Aeternia's Furnace' and 'Rhea's Bellies." The former at the southern most tip of the island while the latter consists of a series of active volcano and hot geysers located at the very foot of 'Rhea's Reach' near the center of the island. The volcanic fumes have been reported to cause a hallucinogenic effect when inhaled in large doses, which is why those regions are often avoided. Dunes of sand also occupy the Western bend of the island, where it is only separated from Olympia by a thin channel of water.

Because it is not as heavily commercialized like her neighbors, Secyclion remains a relatively quiet island, with much of the nature untampered with. All around the islands, small springs and geysers spring about like flowers, especially in the lower-lying regions, where the complex drainage system supports all the island's inhabitants with freshwater. The main river that runs down the slopes of 'Rhea's Reach' is called 'River Rhea', which eventually splits into numerous distributeries before meeting the Eunesian seas.

Famous beaches line the Southern and Eastern coasts, with the most famed one being Anatolia to the East, famous for its waves and pristine white sand while the Nephele Bay also supports various beaches that have calmer and peaceful waters due to the sheltering of the high peaks and cliffs. Sunrise from Anatolia is considered one of the best views on the Empire, and is a must see for any travelers to the island.

Demography

The main indigenous settlers are the Vagrans, that makes up almost 65% of its population. The rest of the 35% consists of other scattered races including Kattas, Dorin, Elves, Dwarves and even the occasional Dracon and Vysstichi. Because of their rather open attitude toward strangers, most races would find it easy to settle down amongst the natives if they do not cause trouble.

Because families have been dwelling within the island for generations, many of them are closely knit, and judging someone based on the name they bear would usually be enough to ascertain the kind of dealings and reputation that one possesses.

Being a tourist-attraction, many of the natives are able to speak Common fluently, as well as scattered languages that they pick up from travelers such as Elvish and Charismean, for example, and this has caused the Secyclionians to develop a unique dialect which is a fusion of the different languages. This fusion can be seen in some of their newer dishes, which are a favorite amongst tourists.

Currently, there are at least 8,000 permanent residents living on Secyclion, with an additional 3,000 either tourists, sailors or shipmates that had docked on the Secyclion Harbor.

Commerce and Trade

Secyclion relies heavily on trade for many of their finish products. While seafoods are plentiful and are exported to inland Kriskinstat Kaldira and Jiems, meat like beef and poultry are rare on the island because of the lack of land to graze and rear these animals. They are thus imported from the mainland, together with vegetables and fruits which the island lacks due to lack of cultivatable land despite the fertile soil that is found almost everywhere.

Precious gemstones are widely believed to be found near the volcanoes, yet there is only one gemstone mine found on the island, near 'Rhea's Bellies' as many of the others are considered too dangerous to be operable. The mine boast a huge selection of gems, though they are not found in high concentration. These gems are exported to neighboring islands or even the mainland where they are finished and fashioned into jewelry.

A famous local product of Secyclion is the Secyclionian Wine, which is fermented from a grape variety known as the 'Golden Grapes' that are native to the island. Grown on the fertile volcanic soil, the grapes and wine are highly sought after by the highest bidders, and the lack of cultivatable soil on the island makes them even more rare and expensive. They are harvested early Summer, before the heat waves settle in and spoil the fruit.

Felt is also produced from the indigenous Secyclion rams which live on the craggy cliffs of the island. The fabric is characterized by it's thick texture that is extremely adept at protecting against the cold due to its thick layer, and its ruggedness and durability. To be able to own a piece of Secyclion felt is considered of high status on the island. Other felts are also made, albeit of lower quality, because the Secyclionians skin the animals after their flesh have been consumed, to ensure that the animal's body parts -- in this case, its skin, is not being wasted by simply leaving the animal to rot.

Another local produce would be the Secyclion soil which is used to be fashioned as fertilizers for prized pots, as well as spa reagents. Some are even fashioned into incense which is said to have therapeutic purposes. Because of the high content of rare sand and volcanic ashes found only on the island, Secyclion also is famous for its glasswork, whose glass is said to produce a strange fiery imprint in it's natural form. Jewel crafters are also found on the Island, seeking to lay their hands and hone their craft on the precious gemstones uncovered from the mines.

The main income for the island city however, is tourism, which makes up the gross total of its revenue. An interesting note is that travelers require a permit to stay on the island for more than three months, after which, they must return to the permit office to get a renewal of the permit.

City Government

The City Government of Secyclion is no different from many of the other Allerian Cities, the Thane is the singular head of the City, second to no other and answers to the Governor of the Nesocratic Federation. While the general outline remains consistent, the Thane himself has included several other positions to assist him in the running of Secyclion.

His Principal Staff consists of the Prefect and Constable with regards to Law and Order, as well as Enforcement and Security; the Aedile, who is in charge of Civics and Housing issues, Harbor Master who answers to the Thane with regards to the entry and exit of visitors as well as the Head of Treasury who oversees trade and finances, as well as the important role of maintaining of the City's coffers. Last by not the least, the Speaker of the Council, after consolidating all the points from the Council members, will also be the one presenting his findings to the Thane and the rest of the Principal Staff for discussion.

The City Council, which varies from City to City, depending on the needs and representation, is also varied in Secyclion. Called the League of Secyclionia, it is considered an honorable position which is fiercely contested, with polls and elections set up for members who wish to enter the lobbying force that balances the Thane's control over the City.

Unlike the rest of the Cities where most of the Council members are elected randomly all over the City, the Thirty-One Member Council is being elected by their area of representation by the three main districts equally, which means that every district have ten spokesmen representing the interests of the region, be it the increase of public amenities, security issues or funds requirement. Each region elects their Council men and women via public balloting which takes place every three Eras.

Many Council men and women spend at least a Brightening every month to listen to the people they represent in order to garner their continuous support, which translate into their position within the League.

Diplomatic Relationships

City Militia

The City Militia consists of 600 men, out of which, at least 180 are held in Palati Ariadne, the Thanal Palace. Unlike Olympia and Ieffreon, Secyclion has other standing military, and because of its dangerous harbor that poses a danger to big ships, the Imperial Warships usually bypass the island to dock at the rest of the Eunesian Isles. The Secyclion Harbor is manned by at least 100 men, and the rest are delegated to island patrols, or coastal patrols around the waters of Secyclion.

The Militia also has ten Gorijas which they had bred from the Arakmat Wilderness, and these creatures act as loyal mounts which allows patrols to move from one place to another quickly due to their ability to maneuver mountainous terrain superbly well.

It is an interesting note that all of the 600 strong are extremely adept swimmers, and out of the 180 are 60 who are highly trained in marine warfare, who holds trials every Era to sieve through those who have the potential and physical aptitude to join their prestigious ranks. These fierce warriors called the 'Neptunalia' are the cream of the Militia, and are able to perform underwater maneuvers that the common man could not.

Nobility

Nobility in Secyclion isn't just title and privileges like some Cities, where Nobles wield considerably politic and financial clout; but also a lot of responsibility. While respect and certain privileges are granted regardless, the Nobles of Secyclion are also required to pay a 'Nobility Fund' every Era, usually a donation of sizable quantity to maintain public facilities such as libraries, theaters, Akademias and roads.

The children of these Nobles usually are not just brought up on Secyclion soil, but are also sent to the rest of the Eunesian Islands, be it for higher education, refining of arts and trade skills, or even to acquire much of life's experiences. Passage onto the mainland is rare, mainly because the Eunesians have a strong culture and tradition whose views upon mainland influences are often carried with a smirk of amusement.

On top of that, all sons and daughters of Nobles are required to serve for a period of time in the City Militia, and should there be a time when Secyclion engages in hostile relationships, are fully expected to be prepared to lay down their lives for the Island City, as per the Tenants of Nobiles decreed personally by the Thane himself.

While the Nobles possess limited power bases within Secyclion, many are required to fulfill their duties to continue achieving the same love and respect from the populace. Laziness is an aspect that is strongly deplored of Secyclionians, and the Nobiles are often seen doing charity work, helping out in public service sectors while their children defend the City; and not just wallowing in their riches and leisure.

Flora and Fauna

Flora and Fauna

The Flora and Fauna of Secyclion is roughly similar to the rest of the Eunesian Isles, species of trees, shrubs and flowers in the same genus and variant as those found over the Nesocratic Federation of Eunesia. There are however certain species which are unique to Secyclion, which likely because of their diverse habitat and terrain is able to give host to an array of different plant and animal life. Plant species include coconuts and palm, while deeper inland in the Eastern regions, many other species of trees and shrubs could be found.

Many species of birds find homes on the island, with marine birds such as Gulls, Gannets, Cormorants and Terns, even Ospreys. Land animals are more confined to a certain degree, with the ancient volcanic eruption believed to have caused many native animals to be completely wiped out. Many of the land animals are foreign to Secyclion, being brought over by traders when the island nation became part of the Aelyrian Empire. Sea snakes are also a common sight, with many an unfortunate fisherman accidentally snaring them in his nets and bitten. Far away from land in the middle of the Eunesian seas, many of them usually die before reaching shore due to the potent toxins of these serpents.

Plenty of fish varieties can be found in the Eunesia Sea, which is the cradle of the best seafoods in the Empire. Crabs, lobsters, and cod are usually exported out of the island nation while the less expensive fishes are consumed by the locals. Shellfishs are a local favorite, as well as shrimps and octopus.

Golden Grapes

Sometimes called 'Ambrosian Grapes', the fruits are a local produce of Secyclion, and it's first uniqueness would be it's hue, which is of a dull golden color. The color of the skin is believed to be obtained by the high sulfur content of the volcanic soil. They used to be found everywhere around the island, but they are only seen in City-controlled vineyards to the Eastern lands these Brightenings.

Extremely expensive and rare, it is considered a punishable crime if a citizen is found to be growing the fruit privately since the ownership of cultivating and processing them are run by state-run companies.

The grapes are used in expensive cuisines as condiments such as grape jam, but most of them eventually end up in wines which are sold all over the Empire for a high price due to its rarity, and smooth yet buttery texture.

Singing Flowers

Perhaps due to the strange soil found on the island which is extremely fertile with mineral deposits that are unique on the Empire, the island also is home to one of the strangest kind of flowers -- the kind that sings. Bright yellow with golden anthers and silver stigmas, these flower are cylindrical shaped, with pores naturally formed on the petals, and when aligned in the correct angle of the wind, produces a sound that resembles wood wind instruments such as the flute.

An entire plant, due to the different arrangement of the flowers at various angles, is thus able to create a melody all by itself when the breeze blows past, and is truly a delight to witness when one visits the wilderness regions of the island. These plants grow to a grand height of about seven feet tall, high enough to stretch past most shrubs and catch most breezes.

Their fruits, a juicy, red colored berry is said to be able to nourish the throats, and are highly sought by performers who require their voice.

White Breasted Finch

A small bird that is slightly smaller than the palm of a Human, the White Breasted Finch is a bird native to Secyclion. Nestled amongst the estuaries of the Eastern shores, the Finch is a favorite local pet to the young children due to its gentle nature and is easily tamed to sing. These songbirds can be purchased in petshops on the island, and is one of the more popular breeds of birds as most of the others are seabirds that are fiercely hostile and territorial.

Secyclion Blue Crab

A truly rare animal, due to the fact that its entire coloration is of a blue-gray, with green eyes tinged in red, the Secyclion Blue Crabs came ashore in the middle of Spring just as the monsoon draws to a close every Era, and the island's beaches would usually be closed as millions upon millions of tiny crustaceans, each no bigger than half a palm come ashore to mate. Many are caught and harvested by the locals to be eaten, but most of the crabs manage to safely fulfill their purpose before returning to the sea for another Era.

Despite the rainy season, many travelers visit Secyclion just to witness the strange and enigmatic sight that can only be seen on Secyclion.

Red-tipped Gannet

While the common Gannet is white or creamed colored when they reach maturity, the red-tipped Gannet is black feathered, with red tips at the edge of the wings. Yellow eyes peer almost grimly from the head, and perhaps because of its coloration and large size (wingspan of 8 feet), many are intimidated by the sight of the Red-tipped Gannet. They are also furious creatures that attack Humans or snatch food away from the hands when they are unawares.

They keep themselves to their roosting grounds on the Southern Cliffs, but sometimes they enter the City where they turn into a menace. There have been instances where the Red-tipped Gannet snatches newborns from their mother's arms, though these are rare and few in between.

It is a local belief that if a Red-tipped Gannet circles someone, it indicates a bad omen that is able to transpire on that person.

Secyclion Black Ram

The Black Ram, as it's name suggest, has a black covering that covers its entire body. It's specialized hooves allows it to move over the dangerous slopes and cliffs of the island safely, and while it does not have the nicest taste, they are hunted for their fur, which are being made into expensive felt and cut into coats and jackets. They feed primarily on the shrubs that grow sparsely over the arid mountains, and are shy, docile creatures that shun Humans, which make spotting them extremely rare. Their mountainous habitat also makes it very precarious for hunters and poachers.

Gray Salamander

An elusive creature that is rarely seen, the Salamander is believed to be a man-eating creature that dwells within the hot and unbearable geysers and volcanic regions of Secyclion. A huge lizard with smooth, glossy scales, these Salamanders have been responsible for attacking the rare poultry and cows on the island, and are the bane of many farmers because it would take more than four men to bring the gigantic Salamander down. It is an aggressive creature that attacks with its huge claws and powerful tail.

While it's bite isn't deadly, it's long and serrated teeth is promise enough that whoever ends up being attacked was going to suffer many months of recovery time as shattered bones heal alongside deep and torn wounds that are exposed by its teeth.

Secyclion 'Farting' Pangolin

Like most of its Pangolin cousins, the typical Secyclion Pangolin are dark in color, with scales all over it's little body and sharp claws to turn over stones as it forages for food. It is one of the rare animals that can thrive amongst the oppressive volcanic terrain, seeming immune to its fumes. Instead, it seems to store and build up the fumes over the Brightenings and when threatened, releases the fumes which are said to have their effects amplified due to the high concentration of hallucinogenics.

When it flatulences, the rumbling sound is almost as loud as a distant volcanic rumble, which is one of the natural disasters that are most feared by the citizens of Secyclionians. Thus if the hallucinogenic fumes doesn't scare potential hunters, the sounds it make when it escapes the two glands located near the bottom of the Pangolin usually would do the trick.

Spitting Jay

One of the strangest animals that exists on the volcanic island is the Spitting Jay. These Jays are usually richly colored in red, green and yellow and roost in many of the Secyclion houses. When they are threatened, they would force out their saliva and spit on the people in an attempt to chase them away away from their territories. They are small, no more than a palm, and are graceful fliers that feeds on nuts and seeds.

It is a vile concoction of bile and mucus whose smell lingers on even after several candlemarks, but according to Secyclion culture, being spitted on by the bird signifies good luck or fortune; though visitors who had had a taste of the foul smelling fluid would often beg to differ.

City Structure and Map

[Placement for Map]

City Structure

Secyclion can be divided into three main districts. The 'Toichos Kikkimos', the oldest district on the island which sits directly on the calderas is a mismatched array of buildings sitting within the volcanic pores that are formed after the eruption. So named because of the distinctive brick red color of the caldera The most famous part of the district is the 'Agora Kikkimos', the 'Red Market', which is a market square perched on top of a plateau-like protrusion from the face of the steep cliffs.

At the very top of the group of dormant volcanic ranges near the middle portion of 'Rhea's Reach' is the largest volcanic pore, and seated within it are the important Governmental buildings. Palati Ariadne as well as the Fort Helicon, the Garrison for the City Militia is located on the plateau. Certain portions and wings of the Palati Ariadne are open to the public and tourists, where a paranomic view of the entire Nephele Bay can be observed, coupled with the best view of the sunset in the entire City.

'Hellios', at sixteen stories lighthouse that is connected to Fort Helicon is being maintained by the City Militia, for the ships docked in the Secyclion Harbor to navigate in and out of the dangerous waters during the Darkening.

To those who are new to the City, traversing the steep mountain paths of the 'Toichos Kikkimos' can be an arduous task because the steps that lead from one stacked layer of the caldera is not connected. This means that the entire City seems to basically resemble a 'Snakes and Ladders' mat placed against the face of the caldera, with a vast and intricate network of the steps carved into the walls, with buildings nestled around the regions where the land is viable for settlements, scattered all over the cliffs. Most of the buildings are carved out of gypsum, which is a white, translucent, thread-held crystal, giving all buildings a silvery glow and the most artful shimmer when the light cast from the lighthouse falls on it, turning Secyclion into a quiet murmur of romantic lights.

Neos Megalis is the second biggest establishment located on the North Eastern lower lying regions of Secyclion. The buildings are completely different from those on the 'Toichos Kikkimos', not just in materials, but also in its general design. Usually carved out of the strong mineral Ignimbrite, the tough rock is able to withstand the constant lashing of the wave washes during high tide and during the monsoon.

Doors are usually build over a flight of stairs that are made from the same materials, and poles with markings line the streets like flood indicators that are prevalent in flood-prone areas. This is because during the monsoon season, the water levels remains constantly high, causing the streets of Neos Megalis to turn into canals during the wet season months. Boats become a more convenient means of transport if one wants to travel from place to place and keeping dry at the same time, while at the same time

Numerous local legends and myths surround this period of time when the entire Neos Megalis is flooded, especially during Autumn Equinox when the Hunter's Moon has ascended the skies. Market squares and shops are usually build on the same Ignimbrite mineral, raised platforms high enough to handle the flooding when it comes. Bridges that seem out of place during the dry seasons only makes sense when the high tide reaches its peak.

Finally the Galanos is a small Estate that houses about five hundred residents perched atop the Northern Cape of Secyclion, where the caldera region named 'Pan's Range' sits. The range is gentle sloping, and on slight elevated ground is the Galanos. Built out of a special form of volcanic rock dolerite, the mineral is strange in the way where it appears blue when wet or when it is just broken. The entire Estate is carved out of the same mineral, and the Arcana Academy -- Pandora's Obelisk, a magnificent structure consisting of three minarets entwined together to form a single structure.

The Estate is one of the most expensive places to live in on the Nesocratic Federation of Eunesia, and many Nobles have a share on the prized Estates that allows one to have a breathtaking view of the group of Island Cities on the Eunesian seas, while quiet and quaint enough, allowing them to have a share private waterfront land and mingle around some of the Empire's rich and famous. Many of the residents within the Galanos are not permanent residents, but merely treat the rare crystal homes as their summer or vacation houses.

Some Prominent Places

Some Prominent Places

Nephele Bay

The Nephele Bay should have been one of the best and safest places to dock one's vessel. Yet, because of the remnants of volcanic rocks that litter the waters, most large vessels avoid the region. Because of it's sheltered position, the morning mist rolls down the red colored caldera like a stream of clouds falling from the heavens, and onto the Bay, causing visibility to be extremely low until three candlemarks before midday.

Nighttime navigation is even more dangerous, even with the 'Hellios' lighthouse directing beams of powerful light over the Bay, and preventing robbers or pirates from attempting to steal from ships docked in the Harbor. Taverns and Inns also line the waterfront all over and

While the Nephele Bay is a nightmare for most ships however, the beaches are a favorite amongst tourists. At the Northern Bend, the Empire's largest floating platform is docked on the shores, before it is released onto the gentle waters of Nephele Bay. Filled with candles, even coming with it's own bar and food stations, the flotilla is a favorite amongst the young, who would enjoy nothing more than dancing the night away while enjoying the comforting buffets of the sea winds.

Mother of Secyclion

A statue carved completely out of Gypsum, the Mother of Secyclion is a large statue of a young maiden emerging from the shell of clam. Somewhat of a mascot of Secyclion. She is believed to be a heroine, fighting off a mythological monster to save the City from being devoured. Though the tale gets slightly hazy and exaggerated due to the weathering of time, many still pay tribute to the large stature that watches over Nephele Bay, hair flowing down her body, a blade in her hand while a shield on the other.

Locals affectionately refer to her as the 'The mother' or the 'All-mother' and then of course others claim that she is the incarnate form of the Goddess Carmelya. Whatever the case, many would offer a small tribute to her at the break of the Era, either to seek her protection when they are out at sea, or simply to ask for her blessings.

The Deep Below

The Deep Below is an underground City that has sunk to the bottom of the sea. Not much of the inaccessible City is known, but it was believed that it was an ancient civilization that existed long before the volcanic eruption and was eventually destroyed and brought the entire City into the sea when the volcanic plains which the City is built up collapsed into the present day Nephele Bay. Rumors speculate the the Sea Elves have taken over the underground City, but of course, there is no substantial prove to all these rumors.

The unfortunate ships that has capsized over the Eras in Nephele Bay are also found near the carcass of the old City, and many believe the bottom of the Bay to be haunted by restless spirits. Again, these are merely speculations, yet those who ignore Old Wives Tales are the ones who would regret at the very end.

Thane
Count Charon Von Dimosthenis

The Thane of Secyclion is a tall man, Secyclionian by birth, and born out of a Noble family. Aged Fifty-four ordinates, he still remains a bear of a man. He has a hair of pure black even at his age, an he is virile, manly and still roars with a loud voice whenever he is enraged. Quick to temper and little time for patience, he is not known to be the most merciful of all men, instead, believing that harsh punishments should be meted out to deter future felons. After ascending to the position of the Thane at the age of Twenty-Eight, Count Charon had overseen the development of many of the sectors within Secyclion, including the building and implementation of flood-resistant buildings in Neos Megalis as well as the restoration of the 'Mother of Secyclion' statue.

His raptor green eyes are usually disconcerting enough, never mind his stature, or his liking for Black Ram felt, dyed red -- which he wears from head to toe. And while he was born a Noble, he never shielded them. Instead, he passed a law stating that for whatever crime a Noble commits, he or she shall receive twice the punishment compared to a commoner. He is a firm advocate of law and order, and under his rule, crime rates are low, and gallows are largely empty, while things went on efficiently.

Rumors has it that he was a private pen of sharks to throw people who annoy him into, but of course, those could be just figments of an overactive imagination... or not.

Constable
Arkadios "Two Tones" Chalice

Arkadios is a fearsome man, and the general low crime rate can be attributed to him and the Thane's tough stance on crime. Arkadios takes his work very seriously, and is the sort that leads by example. A tall but lanky man at 6'4", he has dark brown hair that is always trimmed short, and the same shade for his eyes that were deep set, giving him an intimidating look almost immediately.

When Arkadios walks on the streets or moves from place to place, people stand to acknowledge him, thank him for all he has done, though he never smiles. It is believed that he is able to mind read a criminal just by looking into his eyes, and there was the rumors of him being able to make the toughest of all men break down and weep after being in an interrogation session with him.

Nicknamed "Two Tones", Arkadios is a mute after contracting the Pox some Eras ago. He has been that way ever since, and the only two noises he can make is a 'squeak' or a 'grunt'. Those who know him are able to tell what he wants through a series of grunts and squeaks, which may seem a little comical until he's staring down at you. Whatever the case, it is, Arkadios remains one of the most influential and feared man in the island City, and few would do cross his path, much less cross him.

Prefect
Lady Aglaia Arethusa

The Lady Aglaia hails from a famed House of Iefferon, who have boasted droves of prominent members of Eunesia's City Councils, more accurately, the fields of justice and law. She is the youngest daughter of the Household, and made her name in many of Iefferon's high profile cases as an advocate; slowly carving her own niche before being appointed as the Prefect of Secyclion.

Unlike the Thane and Constable who often seem dour faced and stern, the Lady Aglaia has the nickname 'The Smiling Lioness'. At the tender age of Twenty Eight, she seems too pretty to be able to manage such a prestigious and demanding role, her petite frame at 5'6" may not be as intimidating as one may think. Brown haired, green eyed and tender voiced, it's her eyes that truly reveal the experience she has in her work, eyes that seemed to be able to discern the truth from the false just by looking at someone. Her smile, which she is most famous for, disturbs several somewhat, mainly because it is impeccable, revealing her full set of white teeth that instantly makes her an attractive woman if not for the post she holds.

Taking alignment from the Thane himself, she is highly efficient and strict, holding numerous trials throughout the Brightening, and tries to minimize waiting time prior to the actual sentencing. Because of her strict, but nevertheless fair punishments, the Secyclion gaol has remained relatively empty since she took over the office, and she has also introduced numerous reforming activities to ease the prisoner's return into society upon their release.

Baron Ajax Xanthe

Another influential character of Secyclion is the Baron Ajax Xanthe. Many who comes to Secyclion might not know of the island, but they certainly know of this man. At an age of Thirty-Four, he is a man of his prime, one of the richest men in the whole of Eunesia, and runs a shipping business left by his late father. The Baron is singlehandedly responsible for drawing hordes of tourist to the City with his Masquerade Parties that are held at the turn of every season in the posh Estate of the Galanos which draws hundreds of tourists.

A handsome man of Secyclion blood, he is the admiration of men and the idol of the women. While his might lay not in the realm of politics, it is said that even the City Council sometimes fear displeasing the man because of his indirect clout with the way the island city is being run. He is impeccably garbed, always in suave, expensive garments, and ever the gentleman, charming, charismatic, a perfect man, though no one is perfect now, or can they be?

Entry to his grand Estate is strictly based on invitation only, and those who had the honor of being invited claims that the Baron throws some of the best parties in the region. The Baron seems to care little for politics, to the extent where he would readily refuse entry even if the other party is an important member of the Empire or if he held Governmental positions elsewhere.

He is quick to laughter, quick to make friends, and for those under him, they enjoyed riding on his tides of success. Only problem with the Baron is that, like most men who get so powerful and rich, he gets bored easily, and is ready to forget friends as fast as he makes them.

In-Depth Culture, Religious Beliefs and Traditions

Cuisine

Being an island surrounded by water from all sides, seafood is a common dish served in Secyclion culture. Fishes, crustaceans, even the seemingly more exotic octopus and squids are plentiful, and done in much more different ways compared to the mainland. Fishes are almost always grilled, and shrimps are deshelled and mixed with a dressing that contains saffron and rosemary, tossed in olive oil.

Traditional dishes are heavily spiced, especially meat dishes, because meat such as beef and chicken are hard to come by on the island. Spices that are used are usually rosemary, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon grass. For more highly prized meats such as venison and certain species of quails, vanilla and red saffron, a variety of saffron native to the Eunesian isles is used instead.

Most of the Secyclion food are cooked with a small portion of dried and grated coconut flesh to substitute for rice and wheat based foods. Because the flesh is already sweet in nature, most sauces of Secyclion are also slightly sweet to allow it to mix well with the coconut. They are usually baked while the ingredients tossed into ceramic pits, and sweetened cheese placed over the food and melted into the dish.

The affluent who are able to afford better usually have pita bread topped with lamb and meat chunks with sweet sauce, a dish which is common amongst the rest of the Eunesian Isles.

Costumes

Materials used for Secyclion costumes vary from season to season. The stifling summer sees the people opting for lighter cotton wear, with the more extravagant opting for silk or chiffon imported from the mainland. Women tend to wear sleeveless dresses with a ruffled torso, a thin belt adorning their small waists. Another variation is to take two large pieces of unsewen clothes and draped and secured over their bodies. Make up is usually done thinly, only on the eyes, unless there is a special occasion that requires more elaborate care. The same goes for accessories, the womenfolk tend for simple necklace, or a bracelet on their arms while the man are elaborate and flashy with their choice of clothes.

A colored shirt with slightly loose sleeves, usually plain is worn underneath ornately sewn jackets that usually carry the designs of animals or flora prints. The dress, or the Fustanella is also worn, and this is actually the clothing article which the man takes the most pride in maintaining. A Secyclion saying is that 'A man can be judged by the quality of his Fustanella.', and a man who does not wear his Fustanella properly is often disrespected and ridiculed. The number of plaits in the Fustanella also depicts seniority nonverbally. An example would be the Lord Thane Count Charon, who once wore a Fustanella with seven thousand plaits. A simple hat without a brim is also worn for men, with a long strap of leather or hairs from the horse's tail usually attached to the end of it though in recent times, the ribbon has also been substituting the more expensive leathers and animal hair. The fashion from mainland is being loathed to be boorish and low class, especially wide brimmed hats which is considered a fashion faux pas on the island.

The main definition of a Secyclion costume is it's Fustanella for men, while women tend for single dresses that are usually iron-gray in colors, or at least less colorful than their male counterpart. The material of their clothes vary differently from season to season. It is also considered poor taste for a woman to wear brighter colors if there are men in her company. Bright colors represent authority and figurehead traditionally. Black is a color frowned upon because it is the color of mourning, and young children are not allowed to touch black at all.

Children are usually garbed in miniature versions of the adults, though usually in blues and whites to represent purity and childhood innocence. Floral designs are accentuated for girls, who may also wear a version of more ribbonly dress that would flutter behind them as they move. Stockings are also worn in colder weathers, together with shoes that are made of soft supple leather to allow them to climb easily as compared to wearing stiff shoes and rope sandals are secured up to their knees for both male and females during the dry seasons.

During periods of heatwave however, it is deemed proper for men to merely walk in public in their loincloths, worn like a skirt or an apron, with its ends carefully folded and secured so that it ends up with a tail that trials behind. The head gears are not worn anymore, though leather straps are somethings wrapped around their foreheads and ending with a tail as well. Sometimes a half-cloak is also worn, covering one shoulder (usually the right), and pinned to secure it in position.

Womenfolk tend to be required to preserve their modesties, though they may opt for shorter skirts as well made entirely out of ribbons that are secured together to form a plaited dress. Floral prints are predominant in feminine clothes, and using flowers to decorate their own hair is something almost ever Secyclion women do.

Religion

Despite the strong influence of the Church in the mainland, Secyclion, like the rest of the Eunesian Isles, do not have a strong presence of the Church. Many religious beliefs are somewhat primitive, and are spiritual and animalistic based. Most Secyclionians, if they are religious, believe that all things contain spirits, or a certain degree of sentience. This is why they would try not to harm or kill any other living thing indiscriminately, for this may anger the spirits.

An example would be a large tree. Animals and nature that have out of the ordinary traits are considered to be 'blessed'. An extremely large tree hence, would be considered by Secyclionians to be blessed. Another example would be a bird with two heads, or a spider with nine legs. An additional or positive change in nature is translated into a blessing to the Islanders, while conversing a decrease or a negative change, such as a snake with one eye, a Ram with three legs, are believed to be cursed and should be avoided.

The first week of the Autumn, immediately after the Autumn Equinox is the period of time where Secyclionians mourn for their dead. Lanterns are being released into the skies, where they eventually drift until they cannot be seen through the thick volcanic smoke. Secyclionians believe that in order for their spirits to leave this plane of existence to move to the higher plane, their bodies would have to be cremated and their remains scattered over the seas and back into Nature.

While the Temple of Ioaness and Diana both exists on Secyclion, it is Carmelya that has earned the most followers in recent Eras, given her area of influence over Nature has more of a direct impact on the Islanders than any other Gods of the Pantheon.

Music and Dance

Music has always been integral to the Secyclion culture, which is very diverse themes and even from the usage of instruments from those of the mainland Empire. Music are always used in festivals, celebrations or even in death. Instruments are closely linked to the kind of events where music is played, and dance is almost always accompanied with music, for the two are usually inseparable themes, especially in Secyclion.

Music is always played in the modes which is determined by the kind of idea or the kind of emotion that it invokes. To the Secyclionians, a strange fact would be that music does not have to sound aesthetically pleasing to the ears, but the important point was to observe the strict rules and laws of observing the modes. For example, the lower keys are played and combined together to lament, while medium and higher pitches are used in happier and heroic modes.

The most noticeable and unique part of Secyclion culture is the usage of drums. Drums are never used in sad occasions, and only during victory marches, the Thane's birthday and the reviewing of the military. Drums come in all forms of shape and sizes and always played with the hand. Percussion instruments are only accompaniments to the Drums, who is almost always the main focus. It is needless to say that Drummers are usually the star of the performance, and are often played solo, or accompanied by other instruments that are on the sidelines.

Dances usually depict historical scenes, and it's steps and movement have been passed down for generations. Dancers almost always begins with the performers holding a still position before the first chorus, and usually ends when they congregate once more in the original position. Leaps and acrobatics are not to be confused with dances, which emphasizes greatly on the leg movement and twirls on the body. The tapping of ankles and rhythmic movements of the hands.

Art -- Emphasis of Noble penchant for still life and landscape

Secyclion art has very much evolved from the same roots as the rest of the Eunesian Isles, though the island's artists are prominent for the use of strong colors. Their artwork is usually characterized by deep and powerful color tones, and the expressiveness of architecture. Buildings and especially attention to details for buildings are deeply emphasized.

Another obvious feature of Secyclion art is in its portraits. Portraits are usually done from the side view, and the person in the painting is almost always surrounded by an architecture relief native to Secyclion, be it domes, or arches, pillars and even arched gates. Elaborately painted pillars are usually placed at the base of the person depicted, and flags and jeweled cloth are also a common accompaniment to the painting, either draping from the archways or pillars.

Secyclion paint is very expensive and sought by painters who wish to paint their themes with bright and lurid hues.

Their dyes' make are complex, mixed traditionally with dried coloring that are usually obtained from flowers, ground and mixed with egg yolks, and spices, with a tincture of volcanic ash and oil.

Superstition and Quirks

Like most of the Eunesian Isles, Secyclion is not short of her own cultural quirks which are very different from the mainland, most of them stems from a rich cultural history that has evolved over the centuries, and some are drawn from folklore and myths that are continue to pass down to the younger generations.

The first deals with the color of clothing and the mixture of colors, especially black and red. Because Red-tipped Gannets are considered bad luck and harbingers of doom and destruction, the wearing of black with reds indicate extreme bad luck, and there have been incidences where visitors are turned away from the porting on the island if they are wearing black and red lest they offend the eyes of the local.

Black is also the color of mourning, and is not worn by locals except during the Cycle of Remembrance.

The praising of children to their face is also considered bad luck, for children are educated to learn things through the hard way, and encouraged to think and fend for themselves even at a very young age. Praising children causes conceitedness and arrogance in them, two traits which are especially abhorred on the island city. This kind of praising is also believed to put a 'jinx' on the child, and children who are praised often when they are young usually turn out to be bad eggs when they grow older, according to Secyclion belief.

Because Secyclionians believe in the existence of spiritual entities, both good and bad spirits must exists. Names are considered to be sacred to the the islanders, who have to undergo special rites before being named. Offering the name of oneself is a significance of trust and goodwill, and according to Secyclion legend, once the evil spirits know of the names of the living, they are able to influence bad behavior in them, and sneak into their dreams to cause sickness. It is extremely offensive, thus to call a Secyclionian by their full names at night, for doing so is exposing him or her to the evil spirits, who will 'hear' of their name and use it to cause all kinds of mischief.

Celebrations and Festivities

Celebrations and Festivities

Celebrations and Festivities are usually associated with legends and myths, as well as important dates that are derived within the Secyclion culture. Music is almost always associated with festivals, and food will be plentiful. Celebrations such as the Festival of Love goes from dawn to dusk, and lasts several Brightenings while the Cycle of Remembrance, as it's name suggests, lasts exactly ten Brightenings. These celebrations are a main draw for tourists, and many especially travel to the Island City, where decorations, music, and the festive air draws throngs of visitors every Era.

Thane's Birthbrightening

Celebrated at the beginning of Spring, and a somewhat new tradition, the Secyclionians dedicate the fifth Brightening of the first Cycle to their Thane. The Thane would be lead through a procession of people who would be awaiting eagerly for the Count Charon Von Dimosthenis, paraded in a large chariot drawn by four Black Rams, probably one of the highest honor paid to a man considering the rarity of the mounts.

Food is usually prepared as people celebrate the City Government's contribution to the Island, and a time where the citizens give thanks to their leaders. Many City leaders are will also be invited to feast with the Thane within the Palati Ariadne, while the rest of the island celebrate the festival in their own, colorful ways.

All Mother's Brightening

Commemorating the 'Mother of Secyclion', Mother's Brightening is also a Brightening for all mothers and grandmothers of Secyclion. On this day, women briefly assume the matriarchal positions of households, and are ushered away to several locations within the City where men are forbidden to attend. Much of the festival remains a mystery, and is considered a well-kept secret. Female visitors were once forbidden to join in the celebration though such rules have been relaxed over the Eras.

What is clear is that there will be large amounts of wine for everyone's consumption, and plenty of food and dancing. Even till this day, the festival remains one of Secyclion's most well kept secrets.

Fathers, brothers and sons also bring gifts, usually home made to the womenfolk, and beg for forgiveness for past transgressions.

Festival of Love

Another famous celebration on the Island is the 'Festival of Love', which starts on the beginning of the Winter Solstice. There was a tradition that couples who share a kiss at the strike of mid darkening on the night of Winter Solstice will stay together for life. Dancing, music and general artful fun can be found in Secyclion on this Brightening, which sees many couples coming out on the streets to spend some quality time together.

The traditional courtship ritual is usually observed, with the women usually weaving a laurel wreath for their male companions and the male fashioning a flower wristband and tiara for their female counterparts. Many would put on their best clothes, much like in nature where the male species are usually brightly colored to attract the womenfolk. Many reaffirm their feelings for each other during the Brightening, and reinstate vows and pledges, forgetting and forgiving past conflicts.

Singles are invited to join the celebration as well, and as per tradition, the first person who asks a single man or women for a dance will be his companion until the end of the festival.

The Rites of Dedication

An interesting note about Secyclionians is that children born are not named until the Summer Equinox. On that day, newborns are given names, and they are paraded along with the rest of the newborns of the Era. Names are given to them, and friends and family members would bring food over to the families with newborns, and join in the celebration of life.

On the Brightening of the Rites, Olive wreaths are placed on doorways of those who had a boy, while a ball of wool to denote girls. The celebration is a close and private affair unlike the majority of Secyclion festivals, which are usually public and open. Weapons are not allowed to be carried into households on this Brightening, and sear words are not used as a mark of respect to the newborn who are treated like Princes and Princess for this single Brightening where they assume the stage as the main characters, ready to be pampered and showered with affection by families.

Cycle of Remembrance

At the mark of Monsoon also signifies the Cycle of Remembrance. Secyclionians have a strong reverence for the dead, who are cremated and subsequently have their ashes scattered over the seas. Lanterns are lit and released into the skies to denote ascension to a higher plane, and while the Brightening deals with somber rituals where families spend time in quiet meditation to mourn for their lost kin, the Darkening marks a night of dancing and intense celebration; to commemorate the gift of life. Heroic tales of the dead are narrated, and past exploits are brought forward and remembered fondly.

Forgiveness are sought by the living, and past transgresses would have to give gifts of atonement to the other party to receive the wanted forgiveness. The Cycle of Remembrance is a time to mourn the dead, yet more importantly, celebrate the precious gift of life, encouraging citizens to live life to the fullest.
