Of Form and Function [Private]

Third of Ulyris, Era XVII Post-Fractum

The Grace known as Illyria was not one to delude herself; the very idea of falsehoods was a foreign one to her. So it was that she acknowledged easily the fact of her inability to relate to many of the races upon Telath. This was an accepted disability, but one she could rectify with enough time and patience - and hard work.

As A Grace, Illyria was graced with the ability to gather to herself the different forms of the races of Telath; to wear them upon her like the fine coats and dresses that humans, in particular were so fond of.

Of course, these different forms required time and work to fully understand. She could not simply call upon any form; though Orod had graced her with much, He also expected her to work for what she hoped to acquire.

And so Illyria was forced to watch, to learn of the races she wished to imitate - to work up to the larger and more complex of the races from the fae she felt such an affinity to.

Faeries and Pixies Illyria understood; the former she had come to understand while still in the presence of Orod, with his guiding hand helping her in the process of understanding the foreign concept of mass, of a physical shell that had not been a part of her original anatomy. The latter - Pixies - had been a form she had learned several seasons back, and had found ample use of.

So now it was time for another. The final of the Fae, Sprites were a fair bit larger than their counterparts among the Fae, and not so great a leap from Halflings. Upon understanding Sprites, then, she would be able to make the leap from Fae to Halfling, for Sprites contained elements of both.

But enough thinking. Now it was time work.

It didn't take long for Illyria to find what she was looking for; she had noticed the Sprite moving about the city earlier, and had set her sights on the small female. She kept her wings carefully protected by layers of clothing, and for all intents and purposes appeared to be a simple halfling. However, Illyria had noticed said wings earlier that same brightening.

Movement was important to the Grace; seeing how the creature before her moved allowed her to notice the differences from those forms she had already acquired, to make intuitive leaps from one idea to another.

But first ... to observe.

The Pixie's movements were different from those of the smaller fae, in that she relied more heavily upon her legs. Illyria knew, intellectually, how very delicate the wings of a Pixie were, in comparison to their smaller cousins. They tended to protect those wings more extensively as a result.

But more than that, the Pixie's size allowed them to blend in with those around them far more extensively then their smaller counterparts.

The other fae did not rely on their legs to such a great extent, and as a result the muscles in said area of their body were not so strong as those of other races who did not have the innate ability to fly. In a Pixie, however, that was not so; they walked often upon the ground, as Illyria was not observing. This young Pixie's legs ewre visible from just below the knee and down, and so Illyria focused her eyes there for the moment, floating lazily behind the young woman, invisible to the naked eye.

Next came the Pixie's general way of holding herself; how she distributed her weight. This was different, as well, from the smaller fae - partly due to the increase in weight, but mostly due to the extensive use of the Pixie's legs.

The majority of her weight was held in her legs now, was it not? Holding her upright and steady, whereas other fae distributed their weight more evently throughout their body - though they remained weightless for the majority of their travel time, flying or floating in mid air as they did.

Illyria frowned, moving slightly closer to observe the Pixie's movements all the better. This would take some time, then, to fully understand.

Nearly two candlemarks had passed by this point, and Illyria had watched the Pixie go about her daily routine; moving through the city, shopping, running errands. She watched how the Pixie handled items, how her fingers moved deftly over ridges and contours.

Now, she watched the young female eat; paid careful attention to the types of foods the young woman took. This was, perhaps, more of a personal choice than anything else, but it also showed what types of foods the Pixie had been raised amongst - what types of foods she was familiar with, came into contact with the most - and thus was more likely to eat herself.

In the process of watching the Pixie eat, Illyria also became privy to the muscles of the face and mouth, and the proportions inherent therein, and she found herself focusing more and more on the smaller details.

Eventually day wound into night, and though Illyria herself did not require such, she knew that the mortal races were required to rest their bodies in preperation for the coming day. As the subject of her scrutiny prepared to settle herself down for the night, Illyria settled herself to hover over a nearby shelf, gaze trained upon the young Pixie.

She spent the night watching the steady rise and fall of the female's breath, watching her movements on the bedding - the natural movements of her body, unhampered by convention or what the female had been told was the proper way for a woman's body to behave, to move.

Now, none of these social constraints were upon the young female, and Illyria was given the chance to watch her, to watch her body's natural movements.

The next day was spent in much the same fashion as the previous one; watching the same young woman go about her daily chores, her life. Illyria did not pay as close attention to the female's body this time around, but rather to her daily chores; how did she react to the people around her, what movements signified like or dislike?

These things were nearly as important as the physical aspects - and even in this she was made privy to the female's bodily functions - how her muscles tensed and bunched, how her body moved to accomodate the social structure of the city around her.

Though she saw much to frown over, Illyria did not allow herself to take action, even as she saw sins being committed - acts of voilence and - albeit small - acts of depravity. Gluttony was common, she had found, particularly in larger cities such as this.

But these were small sins, not of the scale she had been sent by Orod to deal with. And so she did nothing, turning a blind eye as it were. After all, if she was going to be prepared to deal with the larger problems, she first would have to be able to physically interact with them - and for that, a larger range of forms would need to be made available to her.

The more Illyria watched the young Sprite before her, the more she noticed the little things. Most notable was a certain obsession - a most peculiar one. The female seemed obsessed with the number 3.

Casting her thoughts back over her previous research into the race, Illyria recalled that research had indicated such an obsession was most common in Sprite culture. The entire religious order seemed to revolve around said number, and it's religious significance. And though Illyria herself was unsure as to the true religious meaning of the number, she could not help but be pleased with such strict adherence to ones' beliefs.

Indeed, religious ideals and tenants seemed to bathe every aspect of the sptrits' life. Every facet, every decision, every idea seemed steeped in religious significance - something that Illyria noticed more and more as the day dragged on.

Mostly it was little comments, small actions that by themselves did not mean much, but when added all together led one to believe that this was not simply lip service. It was just as her research indicated; religion was not simply a side thought to this sprite, but a real concern - every aspect of her life was dealt with through religion.

(OOC: Before I approve this thread for xp in shapeshifting and grant Illyria the Sprite form, there are a few things I'd like to see. First of all, clear up the body of the thread in which the NPC Illyria is following is named as a Pixie. Second, I would like to see Illyria's attempt to actually re-create for herself the Sprite body. Incidentally, it would also be nice to know what a sprite's doing in Secyclion, but I'm not going to say that's necessary for approval. In any case, handle those first two things, then I will be prepared to approve this thread. Cheers!)

Alrightey, I'll try and take care of that second issue in the next couple of posts. For the first issue, I take it I'll go back and edit my original post? Can do!

That night, as Illyria watched the fae before her sleeping, she decided to make her first attempt at taking on such a form. She was no fool, however, and understood the concepts of private space that the mortal races took so seriously. To do so here would be foolhardy at best, suicide at worst - for in a mortal form, Illyria was as susceptible to death - by physical means - as the races she imitated.

So it was that the small fae known as Illyria slipped outside the house via a conveniently placed open window, searching out a secluded corner - a shadowy alley down which she found no thieves or pickpockets lurking, and could only hope no others would search out as their own hiding spot.

Illyria had gone through this entire process before, and so knew just how much trial and error were involved in it. She would be here for some time, attempting an dfailing several times before she got the transformation just right.

But that was alright. She had nowhere to go, nowhere she needed to be.

Slipping into meditation, Illyria forced her thoughts away from the arcane, away from the plane of nature that she was always drawn to in such moments. She had not understood the warning sshe had recieved before coming here - warnings of the pull of the arcane. She was beginning to appreciate these words of advice more and more ...

First came the lower half of the body; the feet followed by the legs. These Illyria had always found to be the easiest, but even here she encountered problems. The proportions were simply so different from anything she had encountered before, from any of the earlier forms she had managed to gather to herself. Faeries and Pixies were so much smaller in comparison, and as such their individual bits had vastly different proportions ...

But no, their proportions were similar, were they not? It was simply the scale that was different. one Illyria realized this, she found her task suddenly a great deal easier ...

Soon enough Illyria had the correct proportions and size for the feet and lower legs of a sprite, and these she went over several times, inspecting the finished product each time she had completed the partial transformation. Only once she was certain she was forming an exact replica of what she saw in her minds' eye each time she completed said transformation did she allow herself to begin work on the next portion of the form.

It would have been an odd sight, indeed, if any would have chanced upon the sight; a half-completed body, standing upright in a shadowy corner of the city. Odd, and perhaps a bit traumatizing for one who did not know the exact nature of the creature.

As she moved progressively higher up the body with her transformation, Illyria was careful to keep to the most shadowed corner of her small alcove. With each attempt at a transformation, however, an hour passed, and another to revert back to her natural state. By the time she was ready to begin on the upper body of the form, dawn's first light was peeking through the city, illuminating it in a soft glow that was actually rather beautiful.

Light, however, meant a need to find a more secluded spot to continue her transformation, and so Illyria reverted back to the form of a sphere of light, invisible to the naked eye, and made her way outside the city.

Really, she should have started the entire process outside the city proper, but she had not been thinking of another spotting her at the time. But the sight of transformation might very well cause a panic among the uneducated, and so Illyria was forced to relocate.
