Beginner Mace Training {Self Modding}
Fourth Cycle of Kalendryas
Eightteenth Candlemark in the Brightening of Solaria
The Winter of Era I of the Celestine Mandate
Thirteenth Era Post Fractum, the Second Era of the Reign of Arabella
Paradigm: The Eclipse of the Sun
A fine, needle like rain was spat from the fluffy white clouds above, perfecting the icy glare the winter sun seemed to give off. Each hit of freezing water could be compared to a single cut from a razor, though the sweet rays of sun seemed to be the most perfect of cures. This brightening was going to be one of aches and pains, exhaustion and satisfaction, hopefully.
An apparently abandoned peice of training field would be the seculded home of a novice's cycle, as this would hopefully, after many, many brightenings, produce a master of an art. A gloved hand slipped over the top of a mountain like shoulder as leather touched Dwarven Steel, a cheap yank following. Rhargn now stood alone, his flanged mace in hand, not really knowing what to do.
First thing was first, however stupid he felt doing it, he would do what he had heard one was meant to do before exercising and such. He jogged, slowly due to his size, round the patch he was in. Several times he went before grinding to a wheezing halt. After a few minutes regrouping within himself, Rhargn began doing star jumps and shaking his limps about as he wasn't the most aware of exercise, this was clear from his stature. He didn't know why he was doing it, just that people had said one was meant to.
' Eeeerm, now what?' The ruffian - a - like thought to himself as he gripped the end of the weapon. After a few wild horizontal swings, thoughts began to formulate within Rhargn's mind. It was pretty clear this weapon wasn't going to be the best to use for defense, however, if word of mouth was right and it could break shields and damage armored foe, then offense through strength was clearly the way to go and the size Rhargn was, this seemed pretty well put together.
Several heavy, one handed horizontal swings followed, leaving the mountain man off balance time and again, his feet tightly together. "Right, this is pretty much a waste of time", Rhargn thought to himself as he couldn't achieve what he wanted to immediately. With this, he pushed his right foot out, bending the knee slightly, ready to walk off, and swung his mace in resignation. Suprisingly, balance was retained much better, and a child like grin of excitement pulled at the hidden lips of Rhargn. "So, that's how ya' do it aye?"
After luckily finding a stance that kept balance, Rhargn spent several candlemarks upgrading this. He started swinging horizontally with right foot forward, then the left footward. He began switching which shoulder was facing forward too. This was of great benefit, as Rhargn realized that if left foot was forward, along with left shoulder, then the mace would be behind him, allowing for more of a swing to be thrown and more damage to be done. On the flipside of this, if right foot and shoulder were forward, he had a much greater range and speed then the first, but not as much power.
As the Gods began to alter the weather, needle rain began to warp into glue like sleet. The watery, mush replacement for snow was much worst then the rain of before, as this clung to ones skin and hair and froze those parts with vengence. Unfortunately, the happy, go lucky clouds of before had been won over by greed as they morphed into a dark grey, over hanging sea of pain. Still in a rapturous state of curiosity however, Rhargn barely felt or noticed the change and continued his training.
Now, after several candlemarks of repetitive basic footwork techniques, switching feet as fast as the great lumox could, he performed a poor attempt at a back handed attack. This however, slowly began to evolve into useful stances, names and recognition which would be oblivious to Rhargn, as he was learning from pesistence and luck.
It seemed apparent that if right foot and shoulder were forward, that a swipe from left to right could be used with sufficient ferocity. This meant that unlike before, where Rhargn was only attacking from right to left, he could now attack from left to right.
This strenuous exercise was sure taking its toll on the overweight human as he wheezed with great exercusion. The sands of time had drizzled away faster then Rhargn realized and surprisingly, the grey of this brightening was being canvassed by a deep shade of navy, signalling the darkening. "I'll give it another candlemark or two, then I'm gona' have to get back", Rhargn said out loud, as if he was training with a partner. Next, his free left hand came up to his boulder like head and ran arduously through his knotted hair, brushing those stray wanderers from his face.
Now, with this new back handed technique noticed, Rhargn switched his feet cumbersomely, so that his left foot and shoulder were leading. This was the powerful swing stance he'd worked out, however, it didn't seem as though a well established, horizontal back hand attack could come from this. After several attempts, with not much to show for it, Rhargn accidentally came down diagonally from his left shoulder to his right foot. ' Now this would work', and with this came a whole bunch of ideas that could be utilized in the next brightening. For the next candlemark, Rhargn went about practicing his foot positions and stances, as well as his back hands and this new diagonal back hand he had just thought up.
With the ferociousness of the razor like wind gaining power steadily, the ruffian decided it was time to get back home, to a nice, warm bed. His muscles ached him, and his saturated, grease bed of hair clung to his face, causing the winds to tear aggressively at his skin.' It's time to get back', with this thought, Rhargn quickly reharnessed his mace and bolted back home slowly due to his size, having to stop several times on the way to regain energy and composure.
"Tomorrow better be a better chuffin' brightening then this."

Second Brightening of Training
The energy draining aches of the brightening before had been cursing Rhargn this brighting, though slowly but surely, his muscles had wrestled away the annoyances. Unbeknown to them, they'd be facing the same beatings today as they had before, only this time a few more batches of twists and turns would be added to the melting pot. At least the weather was simple, no sun, no rain. Just a soft mist that painted everything like it was its canvass.
After a fresh feeling jog onto the ruin of abandoned field Rhargn had trained on before, the beast slipped out his mace. There would be no dithering about now, it was work, work, work and the ruffian quickly slipped his feet into the different positions he'd practiced yesterday, swinging more controlled then before, but only on a horizontal basis. Powerful swings from the left foot/shoulder positon started the session off, followed by a bounce to the right foot/shoulder position, in which back hands were also used. As Rhargn practiced, he started unknowingly rolling his feet onto his toes, and started bouncing slightly, almost instinctivly even. It was as though aiding his soul was a warrior of times before, who pushed him into these simple positions he needed to know.
Whilst in right foot/shoulder position, Rhargn tried flicking his wrist in various directions, he did this for almost a whole candlemark, adding shifty jabs into the mix. If fighting some nifty little Elf ot Vysstichi who relied on speed, Rhargn knew he'd need to match their moves as best he could and so by strengthening his wrist and allowing himself the ability to do quick jabs and slashes, he'd hopefully be able to grind an opponent down, before relying on his heavy hitting attack.
Finally, the ruffian moved onto the last move of the last brightening, his diagonal back hander from left foot/shoulder forward position. As he started he found that he kept having to pull in his left arm to avoid being hit by his own attack, however after a quick reshuffle of movements it was apparent that the higher the attack started, the less avoiding had to be done.
This left to right diagonal attack was to be the start of a whole new range of manouvers, coming from all different directions. A quick shake of his scruffy hair, and scratch of the chin and Rhargn was ready. He knew what type of moves he'd be practicing, as the darkening before he'd gone through everything he wanted to do in thought filled headed.
The swings were all pretty similar in style, so no real trouble would present itself Rhargn hoped. The mountain man shifted his feet into right positon and proceed to chop from left shoulder down to right hip, his knees bent and center of balance low. After a bundle of attempts at this, Rhargn switched to left position and began the same attack, registering that like before, left position possessed more power, where as right, relied on speed and range.
After familiarizing himself with the upper to lower diagonal swings, Rhargn moved his attack from head to waist, in a vertical move. From this, the mountain man realized with every attack he was to perform, left was the most powerful, and so forth. This vertical attack however, brought about a new tinker in the malestorm of throughts that swirled in Rhargns heads. After unintentionally altering his grip on the shaft of the mace, Rhargn realized after several attempts, that the nearer to the head of the mace he held, the more control he had. This came at a price however, as it reduced his range considerably. This had karma though, for the further away from the head he held, the more range he had, losing control considerably. This new discovery meant that Rhargn was able to adapt his foot stances and various types of attack to where he held his weapon, allowing for a more diverse approach to attacking to unfold.
This brightening was working out to be much more enjoyable then that before, as now, clear progress was being made. A great grin of achievement had sown itself onto the face of Rhargn, even going so far as to show his quite toothless mouth, were it not for his great beard. Going over everything he had done so far, a few more candlemarks slipped away in the sands of time.
As this brightening came to an end, Rhargn began trying to add all the numbers to the clock face of attacks he'd learnt, however five, six and seven seem a little more difficult. Shifting feet, altering shoulders, nothing that Rhargn attempted seemed to work for five or six. Seven on the other hand worked much like a simple left to right back hand. A sigh of disappointment escaped thick lips, trying desperately to escape the tangle of facial hair that was presented before it. Letting his right arm drop with his weapon in frustration, the ruffian's left dannie came across to take hold of the weapon just below his right, automatically shifting his right up the shaft.
"Thank the God's!"
It was worth a try. Rhargn quickly bounced to right positon and with right hand in the middle of the shaft and left at the bottom, the mace was swung from five o'clock to eleven o'clock and from six o'clock to twelve o'clock. It all made sense now, plus this could be performed in both right and left positin. This new double handed technique was sure to open up new windows, Rhargn thought to himself in delight as he went through everything he learned several times over.
Feeling confident with the moves he'd been performing this brightening, Rhargn headed off home, excited about the achievements to come.

This clear evening, Rhargn was on the ball. He'd hurried to his field and gone through his set of warm ups as he'd performed in the two brightenings before, and then quickly gone into his practice routine. Stances, foot positons, single handed attacks, double handed attacks, everything that had been practiced before was excitedly crammed into the several candlemarks of this evening.
'Right, there's got to some sort of defensive moves I can do to give me a little protection', Rhargn thought to himself as he came onto doing his five o'clock to eleven o'clock attacks. As he ended his round, the ruffian found his weapon already in one positon he could use. Both hands were fit snug round the shaft, right being in the middle, and left nearer the base. The base of the weapon was higher then the head at this point, as the head faced diagonally down towards the ground. 'This'd work', Rhargn thought to himself as he aimed the head of the mace diagonally up, bringing the base parallel to where the head was before. Both these defensive manuvers were tried various times, shifted from a simple standing positon, with mace hanging down. These were to protect head and chest from slashing attacks and were easily switched over from left to right
"Not too shabby." Rhargn said aloud as he slipped his new defensive stance over his head horizontally. It was quite obvious from the moves before that this would halt horizontal slashes to the head, any numskull would work that out. Another candlemark dwindled away as Rhargn worked out which attacks could be altered into defensive moves.
Finally, Rhargn began ticking over ways he could defend his lower body from attacks as well. It took a few clumsby, tangled positions for the mountain man to work that which ever stance he was in, if he turned his paws upside down and held them to his side, that he could quite effectively block a slashing attack to the lower right handside of the body, and with a quick overlapping of the hands, he could block the left as well. Both hands were definately need for all blocking.
The next few brightenings followed this same pattern. After work, Rhargn would jog down to the field, which by now was looking slightly better then the overgrown mess it had started out as. After this, he would begin warming up with star jumps and various other moves and grooves, before switching stances about while in single order, attacking each face of the clock. Next the defensive moves would be ran over, before finishing the sessions he would shadow spar.
Imaginary opponets were placed in front of the bear like man, as he would slowly but surely, swing out at a target, before pulling his mace back to defend one of his own body parts. It was something that could be varied each time, and so provided a great way to link attack and defense up.
Now, after jogging back to his hovel each brightening, Rhargn made sure he'd wiped his weapon down vigoursly, before wrapping it up in cloth. He didn't realize that it stopped it rusting and such, all he did it for was to keep the Dwarven Steel clean and dry. Sometimes, he'd even get a sharp stone or utensil and slide it down the end of each flange in hope it would sharpen slightly, as he'd seen Chef's do with their knives. Each brightening went this way for a cycle, with Rhargn feeling more confident all the time.

Spied by a Veteran of the Mace
A fresh winter sea breeze somehow managed to find it self whistling around the field Rhargn trained on this early morning. The fact that the ruffian was training this early was unusual, though he had fainted illness at work to come and work on his mace wielding skills. Everything went on as usual, his warm ups, then his attacking manuvers, finally followed by his defensive manuvers. However, one difference this brightening was that an eye spied Rhargn.
"Oi! What you doing on this ground!" Came a gruff voice, followed slowly by heavy foot steps heading from an unknown direction. "To the gaols with you son!" The voice chuckled as a grey haired Dwarf marched up towards Rhargn. It was one of the guards that patrolled Nexus Prime, though he didn't look exactly annoyed.
"Eeer, sorry mate, I didn't know this ground was private. Couldn't I just leave now, and you forget about this?" The ruffian replied, a little hint of fear in his voice. "Haha, don't worry young un. I was only jesting. I actually have noticed you here this whole cycle. However, your skill with a mace is appauling. But as everyone seems fond of all these chuffin' swords and mamby famby crap, it's nice to meet someone who has the same interest as me." The dwarf laughed, as he began searching around in a scrap pile near by. After pulling out a metal pipe of plain description he began.
"I'm Captain Steelfold by the way. Right, first of all son, come at me." Rhargn didn't know how to respond to this, however, with a few coaxings of the Dwarven hands, Rhargn swung wildly from right to left, then horizontally, stumbling off balance slightly. The Dwarf simply parried the first before side stepping the second attack and struck Rhargn hard at the back of his legs, bringing him to the ground. "Aaah!"
With a cheeky grin, Captain Steelfold continued. "You see, your attacks are not controlled, you're simply hoping to land a lucky hit. Now although maces depend on strength, you need to control that strength, which comes down to how the rest of your body is positioned. First, spread your legs shoulder width apart and push your lead leg to the front and turn your body to the side like you were a few brightenings ago." As Rhargn followed the instructions, the Dwarf nodded in satisfaction. " Now, push your mace arm behing you an droll on to your toes, leaning your body ever so slight back, so when you swing, you have some space to move into, as most will move back when confronted with a mace wielder who can easily obliterate their armor. Now hold the mace about two hands up the shaft, this way you get both control and reach. Okay, now have a go at me.
In his new position, Rhargn performed a back handed attack from top right to bottom left which the Dwarf backed off from and parried. However as the ruffian stepped forward from his inital attack and swiped from top to bottom horizontally, the Dwarf, already on his back foot, stumble over onto the ground, rolling to the side as not to be hit. His trip was rather theatrical, as he was a veteran with a mace, but it showed what would happen to most fighters.

"Right, now you basically know how to stand, how about I show you how to swing the great hunk of metal." This said, Steelfold applied himself to the basic stance of most weapon styles, and bar in right hand, looked at Rhargn. "Okay, the type of attacks you were doing, were pretty much correct, however, it's more then just direction and force. For example, you need to know what part of your body the strength is coming from, which is your waist and shoulders, though obviously it's best to condition all your body. Now, when you attack with left leg forward, you're having to twist you body to allow your mace to come across; the greater the twist the more driving force behind the attack. You were performing the attacks pretty much okay, just try putting more concentration on the effort placed on your shoulder and waist." As he spoke he performed each word precisely.
Rhargn slipped into position, left foot forward, weapon behind his body, while he twisted his waist and slashed out with his mace. As he thought on what the Dwarf had said, he realized he was right. If he applied force into his waist and shoulder, as well as attacking as normal, he'd be able to get much greater force behind his attacks. He tried this with each attack he'd been practicing, before once more Steelfold popped in. "Right, when you attack from bottom to top, it's important once more to use your waist, also for good control, make sure your right hand is the driving hand, the hand that does the damage, and your left hand is the one that directs the weapon. What you were doing before is using both hands as the driving hand. Now, attack this bar.
The Dwarf, much smaller then Rhargn held his peice of metal as high as possible, while the mammoth began putting his new technique into practice. However, it was a little difficult at first, Steelfold giving the ruffian another crack behind the knees for performing it wrong. As Rhargn pursed this however, he eventually, slowly but surely began to connect with the metal bar, even while Steelfold began slowly moving it from side to side.
"Right, you practice them on that tree for a bit, while I nip out to get an ale to go." With that said the Dwarf tinkered off, leaving the metal bar behind, while Rhargn went about attacking the dead tree behind him in the ways taught.

Rhargn spent several of the early candlemarks adapting his inital practices to the ones he'd been taught by his new mentor. His left hand, which rest at the base of his weapon slowly but surely began to guide his weapon however he wanted. Whether he was attacking in one direction and quickly needed to change or whatever, it was all coming together. After the sands of time ticked by, Rhargn believed he was ready to show Steelfold what he'dbeen practicing, and so placed his mace besides the nigh obliterated tree, and slumped down next to it.
"Oi!! Get your bloody arse off the ground now! I ain't giving you my time for you to lazy around, you fat swine!" The Dwarf came marching back, an angry looked chiseled into his face. Rhargn quickly, and unsteadily scampered to his feet, grabbing his mace as he did so, before once more being hit round the back of the knees as a punishment. The ruffian hadn't actually though of hitting the Steelfold back, each time he did this, for it was need to properly train, surely?
"Right, you lazy git, now onto defending. The basic defensive stances are obvious, and I saw how you picked them up on your own. However, and this is a big however, if you lock your arms like you were doing, they'll be snapped in two, no matter how thick they are. You need to keep fluid. A guy your size will be able to halt most advance, but just remeber to keep your elbows bent slightly, both so you can absorb the blow gradually, and also so when you get better, you can turn their attacks against them. Finally, always use both hands to block if you're able and the best defense is not having to block. Oh and if you can move out of the way rather then block, do so."
Rhargn took note, nodding his head at each statement. It all made perfect sense, and without these expert tips, he knew he'd have easily been outwitted in battle. As Steelfold finished off the ale he'd brought back with him, Rhargn went through the stages of defending. He made sure that each time he practiced, that he gripped his shaft with both hands, though not close together, and also paid special detail to keeping his arms bent and able to move about easily enough. Each defensive manuver was played this way before Steelfold coughed out.
"Right son, I'm going to come at you, and basically, you're going to block, or get whacked pretty hard." With no other warning, the Dwarf grabbed the pipe and charge at Rhargn. His first attack came from bottom right to top left, which Rhargn quickly scurried backwards from. Next came an unexpected thrust to the titans mid section which he had not been taught about, and so improvised, by attacking himself from bottom left to right, effectively knocking the attack out of danger. With a vertical slash from head to toe and a slash from right to left coming next, Rhargn took another step back, and with elbows bent slightly, brought his horizontal mace up to absorb the first attack, before rather nimbly turning the weapon on its head and blocking the second attack.
Things were looking up.

With the specifics taught, Steelfold nodded to himself and began to grin at Rhargn. "Alright young un, you pretty much know the basics that'll keep you ahead of the dregs, now it's time to put it to the test against me." This said, the Dwarf backed off giving Rhargn a little space to prepare.
"Okay, just go easy to start." The titan replied as he pushed his left foot forward and turned to his side, welcoming on the attack from his mentor. As Rhargn awaited the attack, thoughts began to run through his head: thoughts on how lucky he'd been to have met the Dwarf, thoughts on how he was to keep his body flexible and not to tighten up, thoughts on his attacking and defensive posture, and even thoughts on how much he craved an ale.
"Haaaar!"
The practice bout had begun, and Steelfold swung at Rhargn's mid section, though as it did, a late switch flipped on, ordering him into the position he'd been show. Too late, the attack hit, creating a dreadful cracking sound. "Concentrate!" The next attack came, this time towards the mammoths knee cap, however, now aware of the pain Rhargn quickly thrust his lead leg backwards so that his right leg was infront, turning his body to the side and bouncing on his toes. The bar sailed straight past, as the ruffian saw his opperunity to strike. Gripping the shaft with both mighty hands, Rhargn brought the mace from up high, straight down towards Steelfolds head, which the Dwarf quickly rolled to the side from.
"Good, that's the way." Another attack shot forth, much quicker then the rest, it was directed towards the right arm of Rhargn. After a step back was taken it was clear the attack would still have hit, and so the ruffian, with arms bent, quickly moved his mace horizontally to his side, blocking the attack. Things seemed to be going well, especially once the flanged mace that headed for Steelfold's shoulders had to be blocked, though this was at the expense of a great jab to the stomach.
"Right, you've taken in what I've said. Now you just need to think before attacking. It's not worth hitting your opponent if they're going to be able to hit you once you've done. Wait till they have no way of replying to it."

"Okay, now I want you to fight more aggressively. By screaming at your opponent when you attack, you could cause them to fear you, which will in effect make them more prone to mistakes. So, let's go again."
This time, Rhargn was the first to attack, a glint of fury in his eye as he pushed forward aggressively. After slipping into stance, he brought his mace down from above the Dwarf. Steelfold hadn't expected such a quick reply and was forced to roll to the side, before once again aiming for the back of the knees. Rhargn however, had learned that after an attack to pull back so that his opponent wouldn't be able to take advantage of the relative slowness of the mace. Due to this, Steelfolds attack sailed by not hitting anything.
Pushing on again, Rhargn cheekily faked a kick to the groin of the Dwarf before coming from bottom right to top left, using his left hand as the guide as taught. It was an unorthodox tactic, and one Steelfold wasn't ready for, making him jump back in startlement. As he did so, his arms shot out to keep balance, allowing the titans attack to knock the bar clear from his grip, roaring as he did so.
"Haha, I did it!" Rhargn celebrated as the Dwarf shook his head in bamboozlement. "Where the chuff did that fancy move come from aye, haha."
Things were slowly but surely looking up for Rhargn. "Okay mate, you're getting about ready to be let out into the big wide world, haha. The only way you can get better is by taking your skills and using them in real life. So let's have one more go, and we'll see what happens."

A sparkle glistened in Steelfolds eye as it appeared he wanted revenge for the little trick his studenthad pulled on him and so without a warning he charged at Rhargn. A horizontal attack came initially, followed quickly by a slash to the thighs, before being rounding off with a quick jab to the stomach. The attacks came at lightning speed and Rhargn knew something was going on in the Dwarf's head.
The first attack was met by steel as the titan, both hands on his weapon and elbows bent slightly, blocked with a horizontal guard. However, the speed at which the next attack came at was much more then Rhargn could deal with and so metal hit flesh creating a loud thud. Finally, came the jab to the stomach at which the ruffian was still trying to defend the thigh attack, concluding in the wind being knocked out of him.
A gruff hmpph of satisfaction burst from the the nostrils of Steelfold as he hit his target, it was clear he wasn't about to let his student think he was getting the better of him. Rhargn was now raring to go and so in 'left stance' tried three quick attacks to the head from right/left/left, each was blocked however and followed by a Dwarven uppercut to the groin, which the 6ft6 bear of a man stumbled back from. While he moved back with mace in right hand, he brought the weapon across towards the chest of the Dwarf, provoking a crouched charge from the elder. This charge ran straight under Rhargn's attack and hammered the mammoth in the chest knocking him over. It was done.
"Right, sorry about that. You just needed to be shown your own ability, so you don't get into fights you can't win. Anyway, you seem to have grasped the basics, so just go over everything I've said and you'll be okay. Serale." Without another word, Steelfold had thrown the metal to the side and disappeared back in the streets of Nexus Prime.
"Serale!"

With Steelfold disappeared into the urban life that was Nexus Prime, Rhargn rubbed at his aches and pains, this mainly being concentrated at the back of his knees. He'd learnt a lot over the cycle, especially this brightening with his Dwarven mentor and he knew that only practice would make perfect, that by using his new found skills in fights he could become more accomplised.
Before this brightening was over though, Rhargn would go through everything he'd learnt. However, first, he though, he deserved a short respite and so laid his mace by the side of the tree and sat back for half a candlemark, soaking in the dying rays of sun light.
With break over the ruffian took up his weapon and bounced between right and left position, altering how many hands he had on the shaft at a time. Ready to go, Rhargn moved his left leg upfront and turned so his left arm was facing forward, his mace being in his right hand and behind him. In this position he moved through the various clock face attacks, first with one hand and then again with his left hand being the guide while his right hand was the driver. He now realized this stance would be the stance that'd he use against slower, more heavily armored opponets.
Next, Rhargn moved his right leg forward, with his right arm facing forwards, and once again went over each attack. This stance would be for those peskier, more atheletic fighters who used fancy swords and the like. As well as going through each attack, Rhargn also used his mace in just one hands only really using the flick of his wrist. This was simply to create weak but fast combos that he could if the oppertunity arose. After time ticked past with the ruffian going over these, he decided it best to work of the defensive manuvers.
He made sure his stance was correct in both left and right positions, and that he pushed himself ever so slightly forward to absorb what would be an invisible blow. As well as this, he kept his elbows and knees bent, to keep flexible and able to respond to attacks from various directions. Each position was practiced with both hands gripping the shaft, sometimes switching quickly from one to another, simulating what would happen in a real fight.
This brightening had been a good one for Rhargn and with a sign of satisfaction, and a quick scan about his field, he said his good byes and headed home to clean his weapon and take a much deserved rest.
