[Dante] Walking a fine edge...

Thread Purpose This thread is for Dante, Jirael and Niven for Dagger training. The goal is for Dante to teach the other two the basics.

The 19th of Junctor; Era I CM; Era XV Post Fractum

It was a lesson that was met with reluctance. It was a lesson that could lead down a path of harm. Even so, everyone was correct; it was a lesson that needed to be learned. This lesson was not the use of the weapon itself, in truth it did not much matter what weapon would be placed into his grasp. This was a lesson about what would be needed to be able to provide protection for him-self. For too long, he had relied on others for protection, but even the greatest of the men that he had known inevitably were unable to keep him from harms reach. He was lucky to be standing where he was, waiting for Dante to arrive.

It was for that reason that he had agreed, why he waited. Soon, with his own hands, by his own strength he would be taught how to effectively protect himself with a simple tool, one of the smallest weapons. Soon, he might even be asked to carry a dagger on his person… A thought that frightened a part of him, but he knew it was out of necessity. Yes, it was necessity. It was a selfish thought to believe that he could continue to hope for others to protect him. He did not fully understand the mixed meanings of such things, it was noble to want to protect, and it was the place of the innocent to be protected… But was it selfish to want to be protected so for to remain innocent, or was it thoughts such as that which consumed the innocents of those who sought to be protected…

His brow was furrowed in thought, so much that he did not understand. So much that made life more complicated now then it had ever been. He was sure though, that it would be alright for him to follow in Dante’s wishes of learning, and it would lessen the burden placed on Niven in order to protect him. It was a chance to even serve to help protect another one day. Sitting down on the grass, his eyes stared up towards the sky, he watched the clouds move along, fluffy and peaceful, putting the thoughts and worries of his lessons out of his mind, simply to wait until it was time to begin.

Dante made his way to the ruins within the Draco that he had agreed to meet Jirael and Niven in. He was garbed in his white undershirt, with the blue overshirt, and rust colored pants. He had his various daggers concealed about his person with his elven long knives in full view at his waist. As he arrived he smiled at Jirael who was waiting patiently. "Serale Jirael, you ready to start?"

Dante let a dark blade dagger drop into his hand from up his sleeve and passed it hilt first to the young elf. Dante looked at the young man for a moment. "Would it offend you if I occasionally wore a seeming that resembled you?" He let Jirael answer then discussed whatever Jirael felt like discussing until Niven arrived.

The young boy gave a gentile smile in return, as the Dracon stood over him. Dante had arrived. Rising from his sitting position on the ground, he stood brushing off the dirt that had clung softly to his cloak. “Serale Jirael, you ready to start?” Returning Dante’s question, he nodded, indicating his readiness to start the training.

Accepting the Dagger from Dante, his gaze was taken in completely by it. The black blade absorbed all the light that fell upon it. A natural thing to happen, but for the boy, it was more meaningful… There was an unsettling beauty about it. There was an appropriate symbolism in the dagger itself as well. “May… I keep this?” he asked not really recognizing his following question right away… His gaze moved away from the dagger to Dante again… “I… don’t mind.” It was a strange question he thought, though he knew Dante was most likely making an attempt to help him feel more comfortable. “I am used to the difference” he showed no sign that he was uncomfortable with the idea… Though he couldn’t help feel a little strange, old knowledge whispering tales in his mind, it was one of the things that Dante’s kind was feared for. The ability to take the faces of others… Giving a shake of his head, letting the thoughts return to the darkness of his mind that they had filtered up from the boy’s head tilted to the side in an innocent manner… There was one thing that he had wondered about as well.

“Dante… why do people make such things?” his eyes were focused on the dagger as he looked it over again, subtly having moved his attention away after asking.

Niven is a famous HeroNiven is a famous HeroNiven is a famous Hero

oocI love threads that are made and sent to me and I'm just told to show up :)

Her new purchase in tow and Juno at her heels, Niven made her way to the ruins. Her jewel encrusted dagger hung in it's sheath at her hip, the dark brown leather a stark contrast to the rich wine colour of her dress. It would be the first time Niven would ever remove it from its casing since she had acquired it. As she approached the designated meeting spot, she saw Dante and Jirael standing amidst them. The young lad was holding what Niven deduced to be a dagger and his sweet angelic face was looking up at the dracon in some sort of question. Niven stopped walking for a moment and just watched. By the way the child held the dagger in his hands, it was a strange object to him. Niven's heart melted just looking at him. The boy was so young and innocent. But it was necessary for him to learn how to defend himself. And there was no better place to start than with a dagger. It was a small weapon, could be easily conceled on one's person and could do a lot of damage if wielded properly.

Smiling Niven moved forward again. She clucked her tongue and tugged the rope she was holding and the brown mare the rope was attached to nickered and followed. Juno ran a head of them, Recognising Dante and Jirael, Juno barked as he ran. Niven dropped the leash and it dragged on the ground behind the dog. As she drew near she called out a greeting. "Serale! What do you think of my newest 'pet'?" Niven asked rubbing the horse's neck.

Dante smiled at the boys interest, then response. "You want to keep it? Well.. sure why not? I'll have a new one made for myself in Jaedaxia or Demios." He smiled at the youth as he acquiesced to Dante's seeming request. "It isn't just for your comfort, but mine as well. After all if you want me to adopt you it should help if I look like your parent right?"

Dante looked down at the young man at first ready to answer Jirael's question, but then his hearing picked up on the approaching horse. He turned and saw Niven at the head, then turned back to Jirael with a grin. "Well it is a tool Jirael. Some use it for good, some for bad. You can use it to prepare food, protect people from monsters, size skins. It is a good tool for prying things open, like a stuck cupboard or drawer. Today you are going to learn how to defend yourself with it. Just remember no matter what it is a tool, you decide what it is used for."

Dante then looked back up at Niven as she came closer and Juno started barking as the dog ran up. Dante knelt down to scratch the dog behind the ears. As he stood back up Niven presented her new pet. "It is a fine animal, but I admit to having no knowledge of horseflesh." Dante then held his claw up to the steed to allow it to familiarize itself with his scent.

"So Niven? You going to join us then for our dagger lesson?" Dante smiled at her warmly, waiting for her response.

Returning the smile, Niven nodded at Dante. "It's no good if I'm only good for attackers at a distance. A person, especially a woman, needs to be able to defend herself in all situations." She looked down at Jirael. "Serale," Niven put an arm around Jirael and gave him a little side hug. "How are you this brightening, hm?" She asked the boy. Niven knelt down in front of him. "Can you help me? I need you to help me pick a name for the horse. Can you do that?" Niven smiled at Jirael. "You can think about it and then let me know what your idea's are." Niven assumed that Jirael had never had a pet, never mind getting to name one before, so she wanted to give him a little part of her. They would be getting to know each other well over the next little while and Niven wanted to make sure that he felt like he meant something to her, that he felt safe with her and that no matter what he would be looked after by her during their time together.

Looking up at Dante, Niven winked, and then stood. Dusting herself off, she called Juno to her. Niven caught the dog's leash and grabbed the rope for the horse again. She led the horse off to the side of the ruins and tied both animals to what she found that looked sturdy enough to take a bit of tugging. Walking back to where the boy and the dracon stood, Niven tossed her bag off to the side. "Should we start?" She asked.

His gaze still captured by the dark blade in his hand, the boy did not seem to respond to Dante’s answers with anything more then a slight nod. The dagger turned in his hand, being examined from each angle as Dante talked to him. A tool… he thought to hiself. It would be a tool for his desires? It was a strange concept to him, but one that he was sure to learn about.

Niven had arrived with her two animal companions and still, the boys attention was drawn more to the dagger then to the people around him at the moment. It was not until Niven had put her arm around him that he really took notice. There was a moment of embarrassment as he realized the distant voices had been Niven and Dante conversing. “Lady Niven, Serale” his voice wavered a little as he tried to correct his behavior “I am well.” He responded again, this time his eyes moving to meet hers for a moment, to affirm that she was actually here. It was then that he noticed the other creatures she had brought with her.

Both were things he had seen before, but never up close. As Niven asked him to name her horse his eyes returned to hers, looking up at her with wonder. Niven was right, he had never named anything before; knowing what it meant to have a pet was a moment of many peoples childhood that Jirael had never experienced. In a way though he saw it in a much different light, much in the vein of his own situation… His name was given to him by someone else, and now he was to give a name to someone else… “Really…?” he asked for a moment, but really did not wait for Niven’s answer. He could read it in her eyes.

The boy took hold of one of Niven’s hands and gently placed the hilt of the dark dagger that Dante had given him into it. Releasing its handle, turning the blade over to her, he moved over to the horse. Staring at it for moments, he kept a minor distance between them. Clearly he was sizing it up, figuring out how such a creature would react to him. Though he was familiar with horses, this one seemed to be lacking a few of the things that he had grown to know about them. This one was closest to the ones, who were used for long travel, but the distinct lack of wagon at the back made him realize, perhaps they were not mutually connected. Finally moving close to the horse, he stepped up to cautiously give it a pet near the side of its neck.

Turning back to look at Dante, then to Niven he gave both of them a smile… The name had not come to him yet, but he imagined that such a thing would not be immediate… Still, he knew it would be shown to him soon, and could feel that it would be something the horse would feel proud to have. Giving them both a nod when Niven asked whether it was time to start, he returned to her side, holding his hands up to her in a manner to suggest he was ready to begin as well.

Dante looked at the young man for a moment. He had the strange feeling that the youth wasn't listening for some reason, perhaps most youth were like that. Although something about the way the boy looked at the knife made Dante... nervous.

It was something that he would address later, but for right now he had to help prepare these two for a little close combat if it became necessary.

~~~~~~~~~~
Dante smiled at them, "Alright then. First thing is the stance. Have your feet at shoulder width with the knees slightly bent. Your arms are going to be up at chest level with your off hand out and your dagger close in to the body." Dante then took the stance to demonstrate for Niven and Jirael. He held the dagger blade down.
ooc I’m going to move on before you niven :p
The young boy gingerly accepted the dagger back from Niven, His pale hands wrapped around its handle as he began to take a few steps backwards away from Niven, his wings twitching slightly for balance as his feet carefully navigated the unseen path behind him. In his hands, the contrast between the boy and the blade was striking.
As Dante spoke to the two elves, the boy listened to his words carefully, trying his best to understand exactly what Dante was speaking of. Watching the Dracon demonstrate, moving into the stance that had been described, the young boy began to mimic his motions, though the exact spacing wasn’t easy at first. His attempts seemed to be to copy Dante as exactly as he could, though with the difference in hight and boy type, his body seemed unwilling to cooperate in the exact manner.
Patiently he took careful note between Dante and Niven, while he tried to get the stance correct. His feet moved one step after the other further and further apart, stepping side to side until he found the correct distance, about shoulder width, though not exact, he was able to find a distance that was comfortable and held his balance. Behind him his wings seemed to move out, stretching slowly to follow his legs for balance, occasionally producing a few quick flap motions when ever he felt that his balance were compromised.
Bending his knee’s a few time, he crouched a little, moving between different levels of bent until his bend seemed close to that of Niven’s pose. His arms moved up to Chest level, again causing his wings to move occasionally in response as he adjusted to get a close, but again comfortable position. The dagger was held in his right hand, close to the body, the dark blade pointing towards the ground.
His eyes moved between Dante and Niven all the while, once his body had finshised going through its positional adjustments he awaited some sign from Dante that he had gotten the position correct.
oocI was waiting for you to. Sorry for the short post
Unsheathing her dagger, Niven copied the stance Dante was modeling. The pose was familiar, she'd been taught and used it before, just not with a dagger in her hand. She glanced beside her at Jirael and almost fell over laughing as she watched him work so hard to find his balance in the stance.
"Ok, you need to relax," Niven told the boy. "Here," She said coming up behind him. Reaching under his wings, Niven helped Jirael loosen his arm muscles. His tension was inhibiting him. "Better?" Niven asked walking back to her place beside him. She assumed the stance again and looked at Dante, awaiting his next instruction.
As Dante was about to start correcting Jirael's stance Niven broke her's and headed over to the boy giving him some pointers. The dracon raised his eyebrow at the young elven busybody.
After she finished her correction Dante moved over to the young elf. "Don't let your wings become a crutch Jirael. You need to learn to fight without them, then use them as an advantage. Don't need them, let them be your secret weapon. Let's try this." Dante took out two lengths of cloth and tied each of his wings closed with a sailor's knot.
Dante then did the same with his own wings to show the boy it was possible. He then turned back to his students, "Alright next is footwork. Dagger fighting is dangerous primarily because your weapon is typically smaller than most other weapons, so you have to stay quick." Dante took the normal stance again with his dagger pointed downward up by his chest.
"You step in quick, then step out quick. Like this..." From his basic stance he took a quick step forward with his right foot and followed it up with his left. He then reversed the steps back to his original position. "This is passing step"
Jirael gave a nod as Niven helped him loosen his arm muscles. It was his first time learning how to fight, and the prospect did make him a little nervous. Having his wings tied by Dante caused the nervousness to stay at its regular level, rather than going down… Under heavy robes his wings were not able to move normally, and it was something that he was used to, but with his wings tied in such a manner, his mind kept thinking about that place. His breathing picked up a little, giving a hint of his worry, but he felt the need to try to be tough about it… Not to disappoint either Dante, or Niven.
Keeping his gaze fixed on Dante as he demonstrated the next move, the boys body now leaned a little forward in the position half making sure that he did not try to use his wings out of habit, the other in a position to strike…
Following the motion that Dante had made, the boy moved forward, his right foot stepping out followed by his left, as his left foot was hitting the ground, his right foot was already making its way to allow a quick transition into a backward motion. Creating sort of a hop step as they switched off. Following the idea that he had been given~ Step in quickly and then step out… However his right hand seemed to move of its own accord, the dagger moving from a down position into a striking position, his hand grasping the butt of the dagger tightly as it followed in step with his left foot, striking into the invisible assailant that stood before him.
It seemed as though Jirael did not realize what he was doing as he moved, just as suddenly as he had made the strike at the nothing before him, his body, once moved back after finishing the assault, was at rest once again, Dagger pointing to the ground, his body relaxed in the first stance.
oocSorry for the short post, but I have little to really say. So far everything is pretty basic.
Paying close attention to the instruction, Niven mimicked Dante's step. The move was easy and comfortable. She practiced it a few times and then stood and watched Jirael. The boy caught on quick. 'As most young minds do,' she thought to herself. The simple exercise, clearly mastered by both herself and Jirael, complete, Niven looked at Dante for the next move. So far this was all very basic and she'd done the movements before, so she chalked them up to being more for Jirael's benefit and would continue to do them along side the boy to give him confidence. She would enjoy the lessons more when she was taught something new and challenged.
Dante was impressed with Niven's grace and aptitude. He expected nothing less of the beautiful elf maiden. "Very nice Niven. Remember after the step back you always want to return immediately to the start position. It's easiest to block from there."
Dante really wasn't all that surprised by Niven's skill. One could see she was a beginner, but she had an almost angelic grace that made her stance and steps seem second nature. Jirael on the other hand, now this was a surprise. This boy took to knife fighting like a duck to water. It excited Dante to think that someday he may be able to help the young boy become a master of the weapon, maybe even legendary. "Nice work Jirael. The bindings aren't too tight are they?"
After observing and commenting on their technique Dante declared loudly. "Okay time for your first defensive move. Most basic is the punch block. With your dagger still in the downward grip you punch your foes weapon away from yourself."
Dante took his stance in front of Niven. "Alright Niven try to stab me." Dante waited for the elf maid to try to stab him, while punching her blade away harmlessly.
After practicing a few with Niven he called Jirael over, "Alright now that you both have seen how it is done. Practice it on each other. Start slow with your thrusts. Get the form down, then as you feel more comfortable we will move it forward. Alright?"
Dante gave the pair a few paces then started pacing around them, giving constructive criticisms of their stance, steps, and blocking.
