Are you there Diana? It's me, Niven...(Private Trinity)

TS: 48th of Melora, Winter, Era XVIII

Weaving her way through the busy streets of Diana, a slender elf gracefully dodged the many people also trying to get where they were going. There was a bit of a gale this brightening and it was tossing about her long blond hair as well as her wine coloured skirts. As the season was just changing her dress was still long and only if one looked carefully would they see her tiny slippered feet as the slight Sylrosian seemed to float everywhere she walked.

Having been to the city a number of times before and her specific destination at least twice, Niven had little trouble navigating her way through the city from the Draco to the Temple of Diana. As the marble structure rose up before it a slight smile hinted on her pale pink lips as the happy memory of the last time she was here came to mind. Her escort was a priest of this very goddess. But he was unaware of her plans to visit the temple today. In fact, Niven had told no one where she was going. Dante had left to check on business soon after Rosyun and the older children were off to Grammaticus and Schola respectively. Kala was left with Chariras, which wasn't anything really out of the ordinary. Niven had just made mention that she was going out for a bit and the draconess Nanny, though still her friend, hadn't inquired further.

Slipping through the golden gates leading into the temple grounds, Niven made her way through the gardens and through the double doors leading inside the magnificent building. Niven once again marvelled at the sight of the scenes depicted within in the temple and on the walls and her breath caught as she stepped into the sanctuary and the light illuminated the brightly stained glass windows gave the room a definite sense of being a serenely holy place.

Sliding onto one of the marble benches, unnoticed by any greeter at the door as she had slipped in behind someone else, Niven looked up at the grand statue of Diana herself and bit her bottom lip She had no idea what to do next. Unsure of how to proceed, Niven's jade eyes locked upon the statue and she spoke to it, silently in her head, as if it was the queen goddess herself. 'Erm… Are you there Diana? It's me, Niven. I….. well, I don't know what I'm doing exactly. Your most loyal and loving priest, Dante, always prays to you aloud, but seeings as I'm not very good at that, nor have I ever really done it before, I thought perhaps you might still hear me this way. If not, well…' Niven's lips twitched. '..Well, then I guess is was all for naught….' She pushed that thought from her mind. 'Anyway, I was hoping to get some answers from you. I don't understand much about any of this, or, really, any of you gods and goddesses. I was hoping that there might be one to teach me in these ways, someone who might shed some light on my situation. Someone not involved. And considering that the one I love follows you, I thought that I might beseech you first...'

The Temple of Diana was quite silent that brightening. A fresh coat of fallen snow adorned the pathway that led up to the door and a cool breeze that almost felt too warm for the white powder just outside followed the Elven woman inside. A soothing light from outside bathed the stained-glass windows in great illumination and warmed the marble benches, making them fairly comfortable to the touch.

Diana herself, or rather the statue representation of her, stood serenely over the scene and obviously did not lock eyes with Niven. The way the statue was chiseled its gaze was much higher than the benches below her, a shining beacon of mercy and government sent to guide them with her overly forwardness and slightly odd methodology… so some would say.

Her prayer, though silent, fell upon the room in the similar hush that the scenery leading up to the temple had provided. No one else was presently in attendance. The room’s temperature varied from warm and pleasant to cold and frigid, then began to return slowly as a gust of wind follow the click of the main door shutting somewhere behind her as her prayer was finished.

At the back of the temple, a slender looking, relatively short Dracon with fuschia scales and very short horns made her way up the isles, taking a seat on the marble slab behind Niven, a few feet to her left so as not to disturb her.

”Rare is it that one of Phedos’ stars would find herself in the chambers of Our Merciful Lady. Does thou seek comfort or counsel? Perhaps mercy? You look troubled.” Whispered the Diantar from behind, one hand resting on the bench upon which Niven sat.

She leaned back and gave a soft sigh, continuing, ”I seek our Liberator’s guidance every eighth brightening of the cycle. I feel that speaking to her, even if she isn’t able to listen that brightening, helps me in some way…”

And, trailing off, the Dracon directed her attention up towards the statue. ”Thankfulness is something not expressed often enough to one who would save your entire race from damnation and allow the entity of your home to govern itself under the notion of free will.”

The whispered words made Niven turn her head towards the sound. She smiled wryly as she was referred to as one of Phedos' stars. As little of the gods that she knew, she did know of the creator of the elves. Her eyes went back to Diana as the voice asked her what her purpose was in being here. 'It's probably sacrilege I'm here at all,' she thought. Phedos had created the race that was now elves as leverage against the now Queen goddess. Suddenly Niven felt like perhaps she shouldn't have come.

Letting the voice finish, Niven sighed and turned to find herself face to face with a dracon, though this one was female. The irony was not lost on her. Gathering her courage and burying her insecurity, the elf intruder looked the draconess straight in the eye and said, "I need to understand." She paused as if those four words explained everything. It was clear to her that they wouldn't, but it was all Niven could get out at the moment while she battled the feeling that she wasn't entirely welcome. "I know very little about the gods, in general. I mean, yes, I know about Phedos and Carmelya, but that's because I grew up hearing about them, though I never really committed to either. And I know basics about Ioannes and Diana and Aslan, but no more. And I was happy knowing as little as I did and not being necessarily a follower of anyone…." The Sylrosian sighed. She started playing with her hands. "But everything changed when I met somebody."

Niven wasn't sure if she should continue. She knew that Dante was well known in this city and wanted to keep his involvement in her seekings today at a minimum. She had already admitted to not sharing his faith and with the information she was about to reveal to this person, she didn't want for his knowing or being with her to look badly on him. Niven did her best to be discreet. "He's a priest of Diana and with the prominence she has in his life, I felt compelled to learn. And I was content learning slowly from him. And that was all going fine until one brightening I was singled out by a baby Treant while walking in the woods in Demios. By some twist of fate, a light came and entrusted the little Treant to me when it came to take her mother. I can only imagine that this was an act of Carmelya herself. I was thrilled to be able to share this with my love, but he was, as I'm sure you can imagine, less than thrilled." The elf started to look a little nervous now. "It was then learned about the estrangement between the two goddesses."

Her jade eyes meeting the draconess', Niven looked worried. "I thought I might come to the source. To find out all that I could. I cling to the hope that this will not tear us apart. I… I just don't know what to do." Niven's eyes fell back to her hands and then back to the priestess. "How bad is it?" she asked, meekly.

The gravity of what Niven had said, that she needed to understand was not lost on the feminine sister of scales. Whether Niven felt welcome in the house of the Queen was another matter entirely; it would not be because of the Dracon behind her that she felt out of place. It was all in her head, her own doing. Perhaps the war within her soul was something that was more central to her strife over the issues with Dante than one would have previously thought.

The woman listened silently for a moment, her foreign, almost dragon-like eyes watching Niven with the greatest amount of curiosity but also conviction. It was not uncommon for men and women alike to come seeking to understand the Great Liberator of her people. There was much that was unknown about her, much that needed to be shared. The Dracons were the best to do that… simply because Diana had essentially given them life. Had it not been for her, they would still be slaves to a race that hated everything the entire City of Faith stood for.

”That is just as well,” Said the Draconness at length, ”It is not a sin to be uneducated and seeking an understanding my friend. There is much I myself do not know, even as many Eras as I have seen. I grew up knowing of our Liberator. It was not that long ago that she walked among us, you know.” She straightened up in her seat, leaning forward to listen as Niven continued to explain about the baby Treant and the sign from Carmelya, and the subsequent estrangement between the two. Ah… The tension was the cause of the issue.

The Priestess gave her a small smile when she asked how “bad” it was.

”One cannot dictate what the goddesses will do or say to us,” She replied, ”But I do not think it is so bad. While Diana is a goddess, so too is Carmelya. They are both suffered by Ioannes, and so the Church teaches that we must respect them both. They both serve different niches in our lives.” She paused, allowing that to sink in a little bit.

Continuing, the Draconness said, ”Carmelya nurtures us, cares for us, provides for us. Without her, there would be no birds singing in our trees, no lumber to build our houses with, no mountains to scale so that we might commune with our thoughts and feel close to Aetheria. In the far west, Carmelya is highly respected. Without her, they would die in the heat of the sand.”

”Diana came to bring salvation to a world wrought with darkness. She liberated the people, and so they respect her. Perhaps your significant other finds this worthy of utmost respect. Regardless, I think that the tension between Carmelya and Diana can teach us something very important: the gods, despite all of their divinity and benevolence towards us… are not so unlike us after all. A smile followed, ”One should not scorn another Aetherian simply because of a disagreement between them. This is like saying one cannot love their mother and father at the same time simply because they disagree on matters of whether apples taste better than oranges.” Of course, there was far more gravity to the situation between Diana and Carmelya than a matter of apples and oranges: Carmelya had been imprisoned, Diana had usurped the throne. The question was whether or not the mother or the bride was more worthy of the title of Queen.

”Tolerance.” The Draconness said quietly, ”Tolerance is something that your partner must learn. I do not think it will tear you apart, but perhaps the both of you might do to learn a little of the other’s goddess, to fully understand what there is to respect about each of them. One mustn’t treat Diana as an unworthy Queen of the Heavens, but on the same token I have learned that Carmelya must not be scorned. That is what Meephos would like us to do. He would love for the followers of Diana to be pitted against the followers of Carmelya. One mustn’t let him win.”

And with that, the Draconness fell silent, almost prompting Niven to ask what she would like to learn about Diana… If that was indeed the venue she wished to travel.

oocSorry this took me so long. I'm a little out of it :S

The elf found no judgement in the draconess' eyes and was able to relax a bit as she shared her predicament with the priestess. The pink person before her seemed truly interested in helping her and Niven was very grateful to her.

As the priestess started to explain that both were goddesses and brought different positive aspects to the lives of all, Niven nodded. It was true and must be kept in mind. Thought they might be at odds, they were both necessary to the survival of this world. What especially resonated with Niven was the emphasis placed on the face that one should not be scorned over the other.

The remedy the draconess suggested, though, Niven wasn't sure was the answer she was looking for. Dante didn't seem intolerant of the charge Carmelya had given her, merely concerned about Diana's feelings about the treants presence around his home and she said as much. "I do not think that tolerance is his issue, more concern about the treant's proximity to his home and if that might bring displeasure from Diana. I do not wish to cause him further distress over the matter nor to anger the goddess either. However at the same time, I cannot merely cast aside the position given to me. Do you think Diana will be upset with the treant's presence in the home of one of her priests?"

After a few more moments of thought, Niven meekly ventured another question. "I have been vaguely briefed on the conflict between the goddesses. What is the entire story of what happened to cause such a rift between them?" Niven knew that there were always two sides to every story and to ask this question from the draconess priestess she would most likely get a slightly biased story. It would require a visit to the temple of Carmelya to get the other side of the story. But with both sides, Niven could better piece together the truth of what had transpired and the root of the real issue between the two.

oocNo apologies needed. =)

The Dracon listened to Niven’s plight once again and gave a small, sad smile. It would be foolish to say that Diana was not a goddess that sometimes exhibited pettiness, just as it would be foolish to say that she also was a goddess that was unforgiving. The Priestess paused for a moment and then decided upon her reply.

”I suppose that would depend on how intimate the relationship between your partner and the goddess is. However, it is my guess, for who can say for certain what the gods are thinking, that Diana would be understanding: just as you have both taken the young Treant into your home to provide and care for it, so too did Diana take the Dracons, the Ancient Aelyrians, and some might even say the entire Aelyrian Empire by proxy under her wing to provide and care for them. In this manner, she is not so unlike the actions you take, even now.” A small smile crossed her face, hoping this would comfort Niven’s qualms a bit. Whether or not it would put Dante’s at ease was an entirely different story.

At the next question, the Dracon’s eyes narrowed a bit. She was not angry, but this question was always a tough one to answer, mostly because it was unknown to mortals what had exactly happened between them. What everyone knew were stories from those who were privileged enough to be present when the Queen of the Gods had transgressed against the Godess of Nature.

”Long ago when the world was young, the Ancient Aelyrians, sons of the God of Gods, Ioannes, were rulers of the mortal realm. They were his offspring, molded after his own heart, and could do no wrong. But shortly after their creation, the Arch Archon, Jorel, was cast out for going against the will of Ioannes. The Church teaches us, through the Holy Triance, in Shei’ry, that Jorel sought to give the Ancient Aelyrians emotion and desire for unsavory things, like deceit and fighting.” She paused, and then continued with, ”Jorel also created his master race through the enslavement and perversion of an Ancient Aelyrian: the Cryaxians. Eventually, the Cryaxians warred with the Ancient Aelyrians, and Ioannes created Diana to save his children. She was sent as the perfect General and leader, and under her command the Ancients were able to defeat the Cryaxian horde.”

Looking skyward as if remembering, the woman gave a large and weighty sigh. ”It was that defeat that liberated the Dracons from the Cryaxians. Through this, she restored Law, Order and Justice to the mortal realms. For this, she was rewarded with the position as Queen of the Heavens, over Carmelya who had done nothing to earn the title except that she was created prior to the creation of Diana. And as we know, Ioannes helps those who help themselves.” This was perhaps quite the slanted view coming from a Dianite who was also a Dracon and had personal stock in the light that Diana would be painted in to those who did not know her works, but there was no way for Niven to know what had really happened… which was of course much more interesting and involved imprisonment.

”Carmelya, jealous and scornful of Diana’s elevation after her relative newness in existence, withdrew herself from interaction with the mortal realm for awhile. We can only assume she was sulking. As I said, the gods are not so unlike us that they do not share our emotions.” It was perhaps not the best explanation but it was the only explanation that she could give because of her beliefs. Niven knew that the words would likely be slightly biased and that was excellent foresight for her – taking it with a grain of salt would mean she would not look poorly upon her goddess simply because a Dianite said uncouth things about her.

Nodding in understanding, and recognizing the biased telling where it was, Niven smiled at the draconess. "Thank-you for your assistance. I... needed to know. Hopefully, with this information, I will know better how to proceed with my dilemma."

Gracefully, Niven stood from her place on the bench and moved towards the exit. When she got to the door, she turned and looked once more at Diana. "I hope you're as merciful and kind as Dante believes you to be," she said. And with that, she exited the temple and headed home.
