Maya smiled at Niven's choice, "A dress? Not much for them myself. Give me a pair of trousers any brightening." She grinned at Niven's explanation, "You best be careful then. Father is very particular with his spending, Oh he'll dote on me and the rest of his kids..." looking her up and down "...probably you too, but he only has one nice set of clothes for himself aside from those robes he always wears. He'll spend a fortune on what he thinks Diana wants him to spend it on, but doesn't even own his own horse."

"Hmm, I've never heard of it myself. I spent most of my life in Haarloth and Vortex. What accident? If you don't mind my asking." She looked at her with curiosity more than worry. Once that question was answered she stated "Dante's the only parent I remember and I haven't had him for all that long. I don't know if I have any cousins. How long has it been since you saw your family?"

"Have you ever been there? Vortex I mean." she queried looking at Niven curiously.

Kala came over when they began speaking to her. She brought over her garment in question. It was a pink garment of course and rather than a dress it was a pink coat, long sleeved with several wooden toggles. She held it out to Niven to inspect.

Maya chuckled to herself as she pulled the green dress Niven had been looking at off the rack and held it up to the Sylrosian. "Wow this color really makes your eyes stand out." She turned back and smiled at Kala, "Don't you think so?"

Kala nodded to the affirmative signing, "Oh yes. You will look lovely in that!"

oocIt's interesting reading your writing from a girl's perspective. Always fun to find out what guys think we sound like when shopping ;)

Laughing, Niven remembered the darkening previous. "Yes, he doesn't seem to have any love or need for horses. Last night he was nervous just to bridal mine and so he led him around by a rope around his neck." She giggled again, picturing the scene in her mind. She shook her head. "Well, I think perhaps at some point you and I will have to remedy his clothing situation. He may not buy them for himself, but surely he won't refuse a gift." Niven flashed a smile at Maya.

"My father was in a hunting accident. Someone accidentally released their arrow before he was out of the way and he died. I wasn't born yet, so I don't even remember him." Niven replied to the girls question. She hadn't expect worry from Maya in the least when she'd mentioned the accident. Niven was enjoying her curiosity, though. She had hoped that Maya would loosen up a bit while distracted by shopping and it seemed that she had. And Niven was more than happy to answer any of the girls questions. At the mention of her family, Niven's smile waned. "Almost 2 patterns. I haven't written them either, nor them me. Not that they could, never knowing where I am, so it's mostly my fault. I normally winter in one place, so I think I'll write them soon. I have been playing with the idea of going back for a visit in the spring, but I've made no solid plans."

Her smile returning to it's normal brightness, Niven nodded. "I have, actually. It's where I met Carnasch. As I said earlier, he saved me from robbed, but you and I both know that there was probably more they wanted than just my crowns." Niven shuddered at the thought. That had been the first time she'd come close to that fate. She hadn't cared to repeat it then, and truly appreciated what it would take for a pretty elf like Maya to defend herself from those kinds of people.

At this point Kala came over with her choice, a lovely coat. 'Pink,' Niven noted, amused. The draconess certainly had a favourite colour. Aloud, she said, "It's beautiful Kala. And very useful for the coming season." Niven nodded to her in affirmation of her choice.

Maya then held up the dress Niven had been looking at earlier and made her own comments. Niven's eyes did pop as she held up the dress, but it could be argued that it may have had more to do with the fact that they were sparkling because she was enjoying her time with Maya so much rather than the colour of the dress. "Hmm," Niven said, looking down at the garment against her body. "Perhaps. Do you think maybe we should see what else is out there and come back?" She looked at Maya and Kala, her eyebrows raised.

oocI hope I did not offend for it was not my intention. I have been shopping with women more than a few times, but I don't think I'll ever be able to get into the mindset :P

Maya chuckled, "He was afraid to put its bridle on? Oh I'll have to tease him about that." She tapped her lip considering, "Yes you are right. In fact I think his other nice clothes were a gift although from someone he probably doesn't want to remember." She gave Niven a knowing look as if she should know immediately who this person was.

"I'm sorry," stated the Vysstichi girl in response to Niven's story regarding her father. If anyone understood the difficulties of not having a parent when you're young it was Maya. "I imagine it is difficult for you family. Father travels quite a great deal, but it is only for short amounts of time and sometimes he takes us with him. I've probably spent as much time in Demios and Paxia as I have in Diana. He doesn't take us to Jaedaxia anymore though and at the first of the season he sold his holdings in Paxia. I can't complain though as it will mean we can stay in one place longer and not live out of a suitcase anymore." Then with a sly grin although she wasn't looking directly at Niven, "You know I'll bet if you asked him he'd go with you. To see your family I mean. Of course you'd have to be careful. I mean bringing a fellow home to meet the family? I'm still a few ordinations away from that, but I can't imagine what Father would do to the lad if he didn't approve of him. He already threatened to eat a boy who was harassing me at school." The sly grin had turned to a sincere one. It was doubtful someone in Maya's position had had anybody to worry about her before so even though it would be annoying at the time, hey what teenager wanted their parents butting into their life, upon reflection it made her happy.

Maya nodded a dangerous flicker in her eyes, "After a while I just assumed that is what they wanted. That's when I started keeping Jar and Kel around. Safety in numbers and all that." She tapped her cheek as she looked at some other garments. Touching a fabric here and there, on occasion holding one up to get a better look at it, "I've never seen father truly mad. Oh sure he has disciplined us, but there was always love there... you know?"

She shot a look at Niven for confirmation, "He practices Zinn'ka every morning with us all, then daggers, then archery. He says it is so we don't have to ever be victims. He worries about that, but I know he can use arcana and I sometimes want to see him in action, you know? Just so I can see how cool my father really is. He tries to pass himself off as a humble priest of Diana, but having fought him myself I've seen a hint."

She pulled out a pair of breeches that were a dark green in color and held them up to herself then to Niven, "Oh you should try that on." Holding the garment out for Niven's inspection she continued, "Anyway some of the jerks at school say he's a do-gooder, or a coward, you know cause he's a priest of Diana; and while I don't think he is it is hard to argue when you don't have an example to pull from. Plus Father said I can't stab them anymore either, but it is so difficult not to when they make me so mad you know? It's not like I really hurt any of them. It was no more than a few stitches."

Kala draped the coat over one arm and started haggling with the vendor over an appropriate price. Of course the argument was pretty one sided vocally, especially since the man didn't understand her signing very well, but the draconess really played up the poor mute angle and eventually got the garment for an acceptable amount to her. Passing over the crowns she took her garb and rejoined the other two. Getting Maya's attention she signed, "MJ did you find something for yourself yet?"

With a head shake to the negative she pointed to the pants she'd been admiring early, "No, but I think Niven should try those on. What do you think?"

Kala's head tipped to the side as she looked at it inquisitively, "Not bad, but for some reason I think a lighter shade for her. Don't you?" She looked at the racks and pulled of a softer material pair of pants that actually flared out at the bottom before looping back underneath the leg cuffs to be tight on the ankles. The waist would be low enough that it would show off the stomach of the person wearing them. They were also a lighter shade of green almost sage green in color. "Here try theseI'm trying to describe arabian style here for the record. on." Apparently the two women wanted a fashion show for they were both awaiting Niven to see which she would choose.

Unable to help herself, Niven laughed at Maya's take on her bringing Dante home. "Yes, I'm sure I would have a great deal of explaining to do, wouldn't I?" she said, her amused smile still spread across her face. Maya was sharp and Niven really liked that about her. "Though it would be a fairly long trip and I'm not sure I could ever ask him to leave his business, nor all of you, for so long." It was true, Niven had thought about asking Dante to accompany her, but she didn't want to impose on his already busy life.

It wasn't hard to imagine how Dante would react to his eldest courting. It amused her to know that he had already threatened some poor boy. Niven glanced at Maya and smiled as she looked back at the garments in front of her. In a few more ordinations, Maya would literally be beating them off with a stick... or more likely scaring them with her dagger. She was already a very striking young woman who was sure to only grow more beautiful as the eras passed. "Well," she said, "There is lots of time before you need to think about dating. No need to rush into anything. When the right one comes along, you'll know." Niven gave her a knowing wink.

Raising her eyebrows, Niven wasn't sure she'd ever seen Dante angry either. She had seen him feign anger towards her and she'd seen him in combat. That was enough to make her never want to be on the receiving end of his wrath. She nodded as Maya said she'd known there was always love there. That was the kind of parent she had grown up with as well and Niven knew she was a better person because of it. "Well, from someone who has fought alongside your father, you can rest assured he is every bit as 'cool' as you think he is. He teaches you so that you may defend yourself. Even I have taken lessons from him. He is very skilled," she said, reassuringly. "Believe me, if there is ever a time your father shows you what he really can do, it'll be a situation you don't want to be in."

Feeling only mildly ganged up on, Niven inspected both pairs of pants. She didn't have any in her wardrobe and it probably wouldn't hurt to have some. Taking both pairs of pants, Niven smiled wryly, half pretending to be exasperated at being a dress-up doll. "Fine. I'll try them both on. But you'd better find me a shirt to go with them, or I'm not modeling." Once a suitable shirt had been acquired Niven tried on Maya's pair of pants, modeling them for the two ladies, then went back into the change room and came out modeling the ones Kala had picked out. "Survey says?" Niven asked, her arms outstretched to the side and turning.

Maya shook her head disapprovingly, "I don't know. If he ever finds out he might be offended that you didn't want to take him with you. Besides if I know father he'll either find a way for all of us to go or perhaps plan a trip there anyway and just 'coincidentally' show up. Assuming you told him you wanted him along. I mean after all I don't think father even understands the concept of being imposed upon. Sure he thinks he imposes on others, but he probably thinks it is something only dracon priests of Diana who have 7 kids, a draconess nanny in an elf seeming, and fishes for a living can do."

She rolled her eyes at her fathers apparent naivete toward helping every single sob story that crossed his path, "He still pays the orphanage where he found Nikki and Nelly 1000 crowns a month. Can you believe that? And it isn't like it is some sort of charity raising money. It comes from his own pocket. I think he's actually planning a trip back to Vortex this season as well." She had a pensive look on her face for a moment before continuing, "I don't think he'd let us go there either, not that any of us would want to, well maybe the little ones, but not Kel, Jar or myself." A dark look flashed over her face which she quickly blinked away.

She grinned and blushed showing the childlike naivete that actually suited her, or at least should suit her. "I hope so. I wouldn't want to go through what Father did..." then catching herself quickly, "...with Hatorania I mean." She looked a little abashed as she turned back to some clothing that Niven doubted she'd be interested in as anything more than a distraction.

Maya's interest really perked as Niven began speaking about her father's exploits, "Really? Can't you tell me one story. One that won't get us in trouble? With him I mean?"

At the request for a shirt which caused Maya to giggle because of course she didn't expect topless modeling and a nod and smile from Kala the pair set about shirt hunting. "What about this one?" Maya said as she held up a white shirt with an embroidered neckline and short sleeves. The shirt bunched a little at the waist, but it was modest in length. She held up a dark brown best as well that had only two buttons at the lower end confirming that a ladies assets could be shown off if they wished, but didn't necessarily 'have' to be. I just depended on the lady's size and how the vest was worn. Of course more buttons could be put on it anyway.

Kala on the other hand had found a less modest top that actually fit the style of the pants she had passed over. It was a halter top, but with sleeves. It was short to leave the stomach bare, but modestly covered the chest and neckline. It too was a sage green in color. The draconess had also found a long shawl shoulder wrap of a dark forest green she thought was a complimenting accessory. Throwing them both over one forearm, she signed "I think this will go well with the other pants."

Both turned from what they were doing as Niven reemerged and the looks on their faces obviously said volumes. Maya's ensemble definitely appealed to the both of them on Niven. "You wear that and Father might give me a raise in my allowance... you know if you tell him I picked it out," she teased with a wink. Aside from the shocked look at Maya's statement; Kala was a little more practical. "It looks good, but functional. Is it comfortable?"

Cocking her head, Niven contemplated what Maya was saying. It was true, if Dante knew she was going on such a long trip he would want to make sure that she got safely there. And that usually meant he would escort. Niven still felt bad outright asking him, so she decided to mention her plans and let the conversation play out as it would.

Niven glanced at the girl as she spoke of her father's giving to the orphanage. None of this was news to Niven, but she was troubled by the Vyssatchi's attitude. "Your father has a big heart. Can you imagine the state that orphanage was in if your father feels that it need that kind of money every month? If he could have adopted all of the children, I know he would have. But as that's not possible, he does what is within his power to make sure that where those orphans stay is comfortable and that their needs are taken care of. That is something to be commended, not admonished." she said, gently curbing Maya's negativity.

Laughing at Maya's persistence, Niven shook her head. "No, I'm sorry, as I told you before, if your father won't talk about it, neither will I." She smiled apologetically, but that was the end of the discussion. Niven would not say anything to Maya about anything until she had permission from Dante.

Fond of the shirt Maya picked out, Niven disappeared into the changing area with all the clothing and put on the pants, shirt and vest. Pants were a newer thing to Niven and she wasn't sure about them as she put them on, but once she moved around a bit, she was not longer surprised why so many women chose to wear them.

Coming out, Niven smiled at the reaction she got. She blushed a little at Maya's comment, something that would most likely not be missed by Kala, and to Kala's signs, Niven nodded. "Yes, actually it's very comfortable. I may have to get the outfit! Do you still want me to try on the other one?"

She shot Niven a look, "Yeah I know. It's just... I don't know it seems so strange to me. I mean I've never had much... well before father and to see it given away." She looked a little flustered like she didn't know how to say what she wanted to express without it coming out wrong, "I just don't want to be back out on the streets because father gave all his money away."

Her face pursed into a cute little pout, but there was a grin behind it. Another test passed by the all star Niven? Maybe. But regardless she didn't bring it up again.

Kala of course had already noticed the comment and seemed a little distracted, but at Niven's question regarding the other outfit both girls looked at each other and with sly grins nodded a vigorous yes. Before Niven even reached the dressing stall Kala's hands were flying at Maya, not violently, but signing as fast as they could go all the while Maya was chuckling to herself and not really responding as she watched Niven disappear into the dressing room.

Nodding in understanding, Niven gave Maya a warm look. "Believe me, your father would never allow you to go back on the streets." 'And neither would I,' she thought. "Our three suns would have to fall out of the sky before he sent you back out to fend for yourself. He's very careful with his money and you have nothing to worry about. Instead, you should be proud of him," she finished with a broad smile. Maya's memories of her life on the streets of Vortex would probably forever plague her and, on a positive note, make her shrewd with money. Hopefully it wouldn't get to an unhealthy level where she was paranoid and fearful of losing everything.

The first outfit having been such a success, Niven wasn't sure if she even wanted to put on the other one. Back inside the changing room, Niven looked at the second outfit Kala had picked for her. It certainly wasn't anything Niven would have taken a second look at. When would someone ever wear such a thing? Sighing, Niven stripped the pants, shirt, and vest off, folding them neatly and placing them on the chair inside the room. She quickly slipped into the uniquely styled pants and cropped top and re-emerged. The air was a little chilly, but Niven ignored it. "Well?" she asked the two girls, catching a little bit of Kala's signing.

Maya smiled genuinely up to Niven. It was obvious that it had been a sincere worry of hers, but Niven's words had helped. "I am proud of him..." she said quietly. She might not think him the shrewdest with his money, but she'd always be proud of him. For someone like her it was important to have a morale anchor to show her the way. Hopefully through Niven she'd have another.

The two girls stopped their conversing and looked at Niven as she emerged. Both the girls smiled at her. Maya was the first to speak, "Well it might not be practical, but you look amazing in it. Of course I can only imagine someone wearing it for their husband..." she blushed slightly at the thought. Kala signed her approval as well, "You look beautiful. Like a Eunesian Princess." Then with a sharp glance at Maya. "What are you talking about? She can were it on any island in the Eunesian sea. Don't listen to her Niven."

Of course either purchase were up to the Sylrosian, but it did appear the other two were quite enjoying themselves, in spite of their slight differences in opinion. They obviously enjoyed having Niven as a dress up doll. "Should we find some more?" Chimed in Maya looking up expectantly.

Laughing, Niven shook her head. "What use are pretty clothes if you can only wear them in one area? And I have no plans to head to the Eunasian islands, so..." Niven shrugged. "I think I agree with Maya. They are pretty, but I wouldn't wear them out and around here." It amused Niven that Maya thought the outfit only fitting for a husband. She could only imagine what Maya would think of her when she got a glimpse of what she wore in the warmer months.

"More?" Niven asked, only pretending to be surprised. She was thoroughly enjoying herself too. "Ok, one more. Then i think I should choose something to take with me and we'd better head back. I still have your brothers and sisters to appease and I think we're approaching the end of our candlemark." she said with a grin and a wink. Niven was sad that this time was going to end, but she would make a point of coming shopping, or window shopping at least, with Maya regularly. Next time, she'd make sure to make Maya be the model.

Maya gave Kala a slightly snobby look clearly saying, "I told you so."

Kala turned her nose up and harumphed although she still wore a smile as she did so.

At the prospect of being allowed to dress her up again both women scattered to find an outfit they thought appropriate for the blonde elf. Not wanting to miss their deadline; lest Dante start scouring the city for them which, lets face it, they all knew he'd do; they returned quickly. Maya had a yellow satin dress. The neckline was modest and the sleeves were puffy. White lace was sewn on to all the edges and the skirt reached just above the knee. The skirt wasn't puffy like the sleeves but it had several folds in it causing it to flare out a little. It look like a dress a school girl would pick... and let's face it one did.

Kala's selection seemed much more adult. It was narrow and form fitting and went from shoulder to the ground, it might even be a little too long for Niven. The neckline didn't dip too far, but the back was gone completely down to the lower side of the lower back. The gown was an emerald green with narrow shoulder straps that tied. The hem of the neckline was a sea foam green and the sides of the lower gown and slits in them so that the person wearing the gown could walk. Both held their selections up to Niven for her to try on.

Once the two ladies had chosen their respected outfits, Niven glanced at them both and raised her eyebrows. Tilting her head slightly, Niven conceded and disappeared back into the change room. She was happy to get the sage green outfit off and she folded it neatly before donning the yellow dress Maya had chosen. It was definitely not something she would wear, though it was cute. Perhaps she would bring Maya back and make her try it on.

Reappearing from the dressing area, Niven did a little dance in the shorter dress for the girls. "Well? What say ye?" Niven waited for their responses before adding her own opinion. "It's pretty, but I think it's a bit...young for me. Might look cute on you, though, Maya," she said with a wink.

Getting back into the dressing room, Niven slipped out of the yellow dress and into the green one Kala picked. It was a lovely colour and Niven liked how it felt on her body. It was sleeveless, so it was really not appropriate for the season, but Niven was fond of it.

Walking out of the room, Niven struck a pose. "And this one? What do we think?"

When she appeared with the shorter dress on both girls looked at each other with speculative looks and gave her simultaneous head shakes to the negative. Maya blushed at Niven's recommendation, but Kala grinned at the younger girl with a large mischievous grin. Something silent and unknown to the sylrosian. What ever there was Maya's look was that of malice toward, not Niven, but Kala.

They both turned their looks to Niven, but the were no longer suspicious just amused grins as if the incident had been more of a joke than an actual serious issue.

The new dress was greeted with oohs and aahs. "Wow," stated Maya plainly. She wore a look of abject adoration. "Niven you make that dress radiant." Kala was nodding to the affirmative signing, "If you don't by it I'll have to call send an image of it to Dante. He'd definitely buy it for you." She gave the model a raised eyebrow look of how long did you think you could keep it a secret combined with why didn't you say something sooner. The woman looked so nice other shoppers were stopping to admire her as well. Comments were overheard like, "When did this place get so classy?" and "Did they hire a model?" It was as if the gown was made for her.

Turning as the girls admired, Niven smiled as they weighed in. It was clear she really liked the dress too. Niven gave Kala a sheepish smile and a little shrug. She was at a loss for words. It wasn't like she had been purposely keeping it from Kala, it was more that she just wasn't sure how to tell her. Frankly, she was surprised that Dante hadn't communicated the info to his friend and nanny. "Ok, ok, but where am I going to wear it?" Niven asked the draconess. There was no way she was about to allow Dante to spend money on her, especially after Maya had been so concerned about his spending habits just moments earlier.

As passers by started to notice Niven in the dress, she started to feel a bit self conscious, similar to how she'd had the darkening previous. She smiled a forced, yet pleasant, smile at the people who commented and backed slowly into the dressing room. Carefully, she took the garment off and put her own red dress and cloak back on. She reemerged with all the clothing, returning the yellow dress and green outfit back to the vendor. Flashing a smile at the girls, Niven bartered for the items she wanted. Standing firm, she wouldn't allow the vendor to charge her more than the garments were actually worth. At one point, Niven even pretended to walk away. The merchant, waved her back, finally relenting and Niven parted with her crowns.

Rejoining the ladies, Niven smiled at them both in turn. "I'm going to have to make sure to leave my purse at home if I come shopping with you ladies again," she said, only half teasing. The clothes were more than she had expected to pay, but it was worth it for the time she got to spend with Maya.

Kala smiled, "I'm sure you could think of a few choice situations." She gave a teasing grin at the elf as Maya looked away blushing, not sure what Kala was on about, but presuming something risque.

The crowd hadn't dispersed by the time Niven returned. They were waiting expectantly for the model to show them the next ensemble. When she reemerged the comments were more reserved, but still favorable. "That one isn't nearly as glamorous." "Of course not! Not all their clothes are for the elites!" "Yeah I like this one." "Me too" "I'm going to get one." At that the crowd went for the clothing racks looking at the various outfits and making a rush on the clerk. The store owners were over joyed at their success and so easily gave Niven the first outfit for free as well as letting her barter him down on the elegant dress as well.

It took a little time for them to get to their clerk so by the time they finished Kala informed the other two that she had already informed Dante they were on the way so he wouldn't worry. They both smiled and Maya giggled, "It's much more fun without father. He's always in such a rush when it comes to shopping." Kala nodded in confirmation.
