First day of work! (Ayeka) Semi-open

First day of Fall

As the suns began to rise over the sleeping city of Narim, the general store, "Sailor's Haven" rose up from the streets to greet its new employee Ayeka O'herra. The rays of light chased away the morning fog, back to the sea from wince it came, and a single candle could be seen moving about the store, from one side, to the other, and back to the other end... It was obvious Jonas was hard at work.

Upon entering, the old man would wave his hand towards the door without even looking up from his duties, "Sorry my friend! We are not open yet! Give me a bit o' time to least prepare for your arrival!" Shuffling to a door leading to the back storage room, he called out again before opening the oak fixture in front of him. "Be open in 'bout an hour!"

Ayeka slowly made her way to the store, wringing her hands out of nervousness but doing her best not to show it. She approached the store and Jonas popped his head out, yelling to passerbyers that the store would be open in an hour before disappearing back inside.

The half-elf made her way up to the door and knocked softly before entering. Her hair was tired up in a tight bun so the dust wouldnt settle in it; her normal boots were clean and shining and her dress was clean and wrinkle-free. She coughed softly to get Jonas's attention and smiled when he turned to face her.

"Hello Jonas. I'm here to start my first day of work!" she said.

"What, what?" Swivelling around, Jonas pulled off his glasses to clean them off on his shirt before placing them back on his nose and giving Ayeka a long look. "Oh yes! Welcome, welcome! Here, come with me." Opening the door wide enough for her to pass through, he followed after her into the back storage room, lighting another candle within here and handing it to the half elf. "Here we are, this is our storage room, if something is not out on the floor, it is no doubt in here!"

Shuffling through. there were barrels of goods, candles, lamps, and torches, fine dining ware to rather plain, bags of all shapes and sizes, jars of pickled goods, etc... It seems that Jonas kept this place well stocked. Pulling out a chair from one of the furniture sets, he motioned for Ayeka to have a seat while he did the same in another chair, "Any questions so far, or ones you've though of, hm? Oh! And before I forget again... What was your name?" Readjusting his glasses, he let out a small smile before shuffling through some papers sitting on the dining room table.

Sitting across from Jonas, holding the candle in hand, the half-elf gave a smile in return to the store owner while they sat in the storage room.

"My name is Ayeka O'Herra. I was wondering actually as to what exactly I would be doing, other than storytelling of course. And would I be bringing goods to some of the citizens' homes or do they just come back here to pick things up if we don't have them on stock?"

Ayeka's sharp eyes glanced around at the neat storage room chocked full of goods. She was amazed at how neat the place looked.

Jonas set his arms folded across the table with a smile and a nod of his head, "Well, basically you'll be out front." Making a motion to the stocks sitting all around the two, he spoke again in a matter of factly way, "I will be takin' care of the stocks, making certain things are replenished and what not, but you will be dealing mostly with the customers."

Nodding approvingly of her questions, he smiled and adjusted his glasses upon his nose, "While a lofty goal to deliver goods, our clients have managed to take care of there own matters, we are simply here, to provide the goods necessary." Clasping his hands about some sheets of paper, he shuffled them into a somewhat orderly stack and slid them across the table to Ayeka, "Simple a price list of what we have and so forth, now some of our goods, like the furniture, vary depending on what they want, but everything else is customary." Leaning back into his chair, he polished his glasses and smiled a toothy grin once again. "Anything else?

[Ayeka O'Herra]

Ayeka's eyes scanned over the sheets of paper Jonas handed to her. She bit her lip, trying to think of whatever else she needed to ask her manager. She looked up at him sheepishly.

"I've never done any sort of work before," she admitted. "What if I don't know what something is or if I say the wrong thing?"

The last thing the young half-elf wanted to do was make a fool of herself at her first job. She wanted to make sure things went smoothly.

Laughing out loud, Jonas leaned back into his chair and continued to chuckle as he folded his arms across his chest, "O' course things are going to go wrong! It is your first day and all, can not expect you to do everything perfect!" With a grin still on his face, he stood and waiting for Ayeka to do the same before ushering her back out to the front. "Now you will be workin' the front for the time bein'. I have a few things to pick up on the docks, fresh fish and what not. See if I can lay my hands on some good ones."

Motioning for Ayeka to get behind the counter, he swept his hands over the store before looking back at her. "Now remember lass, be curtious, be kind, and be full of vigor! None of this doubting stuff you hear? If things are slow, just clean up a bit around the store... Should be back before the suns hit the noon time shadows. Good luck!" Before Ayeka even had a moment to speak, Jonas waddled his way out throught the front door, changing the sign to say open, and adjusting his glasses on the bridge of his nose, whistling while he went...

The store was fairly clean to Ayeka's eyes, the smells of lantern fluid, candle wax, fish, fruit, perfumes and all was a bit overwhelming now that she was alone. So this is what the first day was supposed to be, to sit here alone, and get some work done... No doubt this would be the way it was everyday, for however long Ayeka worked there.

Jaw still dropped, Ayeka looked around the store, her heart still in her mouth. She expected herself to be behind the counter and to learn things on her own but she wasn't expected to be left alone in the store on her first day of working.

But as the minutes, slowly turning into hours, passed by, the half-elf realized things weren't so bad around here. Figgiting a bit, she began wandering around the store, examining the fruit for spots or rotting and rearranging things here and there, gazing out the window once in awhile at people passing by.

Soon, the half-elf grew fairly bored but she was pleased there wasn't much to do since she was still very nervous about being alone in the store left to fend for herself. She supposed it was a test from the old man to see if she could handle things, and she was determined to prove him right, if that was the case.

Needless to say, Ayeka was far from bored, while in the wee morning nothing much happened, by an hour after dawn, people were coming in by the handfuls. Many picking up things, taking a look around, and just doing what most shoppers do, browse. It would appear tidying things up would be a priority, often people would put items in different spots, or leave them somewhere else entirely.

"Miss! 'Ow much fer this?"

The rather scruffy looking human male, in his late 30's, held up a Fishing Pole and a Lantern, seemed he didn't have much interest in walking up to the counter at this point in time, which many people, would not.

"Excuse me young lady, how much for five pounds of saltwater fish, three loaves of bread, a jar of spice and salt, and... three peices of fruit?"

She was standing over by the food section, a lady within her mid 20's, and dressed in commoner clothes, browsing and testing the freshness of the produce and searching the breads for the biggest ones.

"Tell us a story! Tell us a story!!!"

It appears with the newest customer walking in, a lady in her early 30's, was also bringing in a small caravan of children, ranging from several years of age, to about 12-13 years, all of them boys. They were tugging on Ayeka's clothing, and causing her to slow down in her current duties of addressing all of the other customers.

"Oh my, let the young lady work Samuel, Marcus, Thomas, John, and Kyle. Excuse me miss, they are a bit of a handful." She smiled softly and ushered the kids off to run around the store in circles, picking up and holding items that they were obviously going to buy, before turning back to Ayeka, "Now where would Jonas be? I suppose you are the new help he spoke of."

"I will check up on that for you! Be over to you shortly!" Ayeka managed to call out to the human male and the young lady as the small boys began tugging on her clothes. Her eyes widened at the sudden amount of customers in the store, and feeling intimidated since she was all alone.

When the young mother had ushered the boys away, Ayeka managed a small sigh of relief and nodded at the young woman, pushing stray bits of hair from her eyes.
"Jonas went off to pick up some things from the dock," she replied. And yes, I am the new help. My name is Ayeka."

"Ah a pleasure Mrs. Ayeka, I am Marya--" Looking over her shoulder, she let out a sigh with pursed lips and quickly scurried off after one of the youngest of her boys. "Come along now Johnathan! I told you already we were not going to be buying that, now go pick up the other things on your list..."

As this little family quarrel began to erupt, more customers began to walk in with lists of daily food supplies and had already begun to pick up what they needed, with that, came those that were still in need of help. "Excuse me miss! About the saltwater fish and the other items?" The young lady was calling again, but was soon drowned out by the larger man from earlier.

"Miss! The price 'ere on these items! I 'ave to get to the docks afore the good spots are taken!"

One of the newer customers began to speak up, a dwarf, and a fairly rough looking one, no doubt, due to the armor and insignia he wore, was a part of the local guard. "Oui! 'ow much fer two o' this 'ere loafs a bread and a pound o' yer dried salted freshwater fish!?"

A rather young looking male was sifting through some of the bags and held it up, it appeared to be a large backpack, "How much is this going to cost me?"

While people were talking with each other, and trying to hail down Ayeka, three of the five boys were now running circles around her legs, carrying various items in each hand and yelling at the top of their lungs, "We want to buy this! Tell us a story! You look funny! What's your name!? Can I have this? Do you have any candy? Where's Jonas?! This place smells weird!" It seemed that this day had just begun, and more people of Narim were walking in and the store was getting rather crowded.

As people were coming in and out, teh half-elf was starting to begin to panic. The little boys were jumping about at her feet as she tried to walk, which eventually forced her to stop. Other customers were beginning to attempt to get her attention as well and it was becoming so crowded Ayeka didn't have time to think. Finally, she shut her eyes tight and counted to ten, thinking of how she could get all of this done.

Her eyes snapped open and she dashed into the storage room. A moment later she arrived with a small stack of paper and began tacking them to the counter then announced to the customers,
"If you need to know a price of something, there is a pricelist at the front of the counter, but no pushing or shoving! Line up to get to the front."

She then turned to the boys with a smile.
"How about I tell you a story about a group of adventurers in the Mountains of Flame and Water once the store is a bit less crowded, ok? Now go help your mom out, I'm sure she could use your help."

What was first a brilliant idea by Ayeka, soon began to snowball... "Oui! Move it yah bloody fisherman, I was 'ere first!" And then erupt... "Shove off stumpy or I'll punt yah out the door!" The young man with the backpack quickly slid in front of both of them and gave a rather charming smile to Ayeka "Just going to need this from y---.", This only fueled the other two older gentleman to burst into even more anger and with a loud crack, the smile quickly disappeared and the young man fell face forward onto the table, a nice spurt of blood covering the parchment.

The rather burly fisherman quickly grabbed the young man by the shoulder and tossed him out of the way onto the floor, and letting out a low moan, the young man grabbed at his knee, it appears that the dwarf gave him a right quick, and heavy handed punch to the back of his leg. "Hah! Serves yah right! Jus' the fishing pole an---" Cringing slightly, he quickly turned on the dwarf who had tried the same maneuver with him that he did with the young man and simply grinned, "Not on your life mate." The dwarf returned his smile, dropped the bread and held up his fists, "Less see 'ere wha' yah got!"

From the sides, the woman had begun to scream in horror as a nice puddle of blood was beginning to form from the young man's broken nose, and the little children seemed to only be encouraging the fight with shouts and cheers and jibes at each other on who would win out of the two. What was once a busy morning, had now become a rather fightful fight scene.

Ayeka grabbed her head out of frustration and horror. What had been a brilliant idea to her had now become a moment of panic and utter horror. If Jonas comes back to this he'll have the half-elvin's head!

Her first thought wat to stop the fight without anyone else getting hurt. Ayeka turned and found a bell nearby. She grabbed it and stood on the counter and began to clang it loudly until everyone's attention was on her.
"Oy!" she yelled to grab the men's attention. "I swear, men can be so horrid sometimes..." she muttered to herself. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly to calm herself.

"Alright, since you don't know how to form a line, I will have to help. Let the young woman with her children get to the front of the line first. Next is the dwarf, the fisherman and you sir with the backpack. After that, all of you get into a single file line after and NO PUSHING or I'll have to throw you out myself!"
