The small Mousai sauntered into the Leather Store, blissfully unaware of the merchandise that was being sold. In truth, Randin was simply browsing the city, looking at the different stalls and shops that were open to him before sundown, when he would have to return to his home out in the wild. A modest and polite smiled had been placed underneath his black, midnight-hued eyes. A dark-green emerald cloak had been wrapped around his reddish-brown fur, concealing the tunic and black woven-pants he wore as he scampered on all fours towards the counter.
Briefly, he looked up at the price list, and realization dawned upon him like a gift from the Gods. His gaze slowly fell from the price list to the clerk, and he beamed happily and nodded in recognition. "Serale sir! Randin was wondering if you might have a leather vest for someone my size, and a dagger sheath with a silver capping at the very bottom?" the small Mousai spoke up as small bright eyes shining with hope gazed upwards towards the Clerk.

Randin
Tev looked over the Mousai and did some quick mental calculations.
" A leather vest for someone your size and a silver capped sheath for a 9 inch dagger will cost you 35 crowns. I can have it ready in 2 brightnings."

Randin smiled cheerfully at the Ranger, giving a swift nod of acknowledgement while his right paw groped inside the depths of his inner-cloak's pocket. Silently they found the proper amount of currency and placed it upon the counter, sliding them gently over to Tev. "Randin will be back in two brightenings!" he spoke politely in a modest tone as he quickly turned away and left the store.
~~~
Two brighteings later, at midday, Randin ventured back into the streets of Narim, and silently made his way to the Alleria Prime Leather Products store. He walked up to the clerk and smiled brightly, speaking in a clear voice, "Serale! Randin would like to know if you have his vest and dagger sheath ready?" The Mousai had not mastered the Common Language yet, but he was on the right path, and with a little help, he would eventually be there. But for now, he only cared about his leather vest and dagger sheathe.
Randin
Tev took the payment and returned to his work in the Back Room.
Two brightnings later when the Mousai returned, The merchandise was ready. Tev handed over the leather vest and the dagger sheath, The vest was a good fit. The dagger sheath was the right size as well. The silver capping added an attractive touch.
Tev said, "Thanks for your business".
Randin nodded and smiled, swiftly slipping on the wonderful leather vest and then attaching the dagger sheathe to his belt, before thrusting the magnificent blade inside. He smiled and looked down at himself, obviously pleased with Tev's work. "Thank you as well!" he spoke cheerfully as he stepped out of the shop and into the streets once more.
Tiedus approached the new building and when he got close enough he could smell the pant in which was evidently new. Then he walked inside and he heard the clerk's voice and responded to his question, "Yes, I would like to buy a pair of brown leather trousers, a tunic, boots, archery gloves, a longbow sheath and two dagger sheaths," Tiedus spoke fluently as if it rolled off his toungue. Then the kind clerk told him the price would be...150 crowns and he reached into his pocket and eagerly counted out the amount and handed it to him. Then the clerk brought back the purchases and showed them to Tiedus making sure that everything was to his liking. "Thank you, and well done," Tiedus spoke in an excited voice as he got his new items and left through the door in which he had just come in through.
Tenth Candlemark of Ioannolia, sixth Brightening of the Second cycle of Ioannes
Summer of Era 1 of the Celestine Mandate
The time had come whereby S'Lon felt he needed to buy a few things, mainly for his travelling equipment. There was nothing terribly urgent he needed, and as ever he was careful with his coin. Standing outside the shop the prospect of spending that coin brought his thoughts back into that worn track - every day he was spending money just to live, despite the generosity of the Ranger Hall and yet he had no income coming in. It was a difficult thing overall for his primary objective was his Ranger training and most of the possible occupations tended to conflict with this since they required the employee to have regular hours – few were the jobs where he could wander in when he liked and disappear into the hills for days at a time, and yet since there was no income from being a Ranger it meant that some other occupation needed to be found.
The newness and freshness of the building made him nervous for while it was attractive and made a change from some of the very shabby establishments located not so very far away, someone had spent money on the appearance and in S'Lon’s experience someone who made that sort of investment tended to want to earn it back as quickly as possible.
Stiffening his spine, he told himself that if the prices were too high then he would simply not buy anything today and he almost began to regret bringing his coin along with him today. It was almost a regret because he knew that the flash of coin could mean a small reduction in the price if it came to negotiation and most sellers did not want a potential buyer to leave without paying and were willing to risk a little less profit now against an uncertain but larger profit later.
Before the second thoughts had any longer to dwell, he kicked himself off and entered the store. Inside was much as he expected given the clean, well-maintained exterior and his attention was drawn to the price list and running down it he mentally he ticked off items from his list. Once at the bottom of the list he glanced around and quickly noticed the second notice and he paused for thought. Being a clerk might not be much fun and depending on what it entailed might not work anyway but a leather worker… Now there was something that would be very useful to know and if the owner was prepared or perhaps desperate enough to employ such an unreliable employee then just maybe…
“Serale,” he said, finally acknowledging the clerks greeting, “sorry, I was a bit preoccupied. Is the post of leather worker still open and if so can you tell me a bit more about it?”
S'Lon
Tev paused and thought a moment before replying to S'Lon. He knew that S'Lon was a dependable individual and a good prospect for the shop. He hoped that they could work out something.
"There is still a need for help at this Shop. There is need for a Clerk as well as for a Leather Worker. Ideally, one person could handle both assignments. However, in your case, you could only handle one and still be able to continue your Ranger training.
"What interests you? Selling the wares or making them?"
S'Lon gave a small start as he realised that it was the Master Ranger addressing him. Thoughts raced through his head as how best to answer, but they quickly resolved, as there was little to consider, and there was little point in half truths or shading of the truth even had he been interested in so doing. “I was really only interested in the position of leather worker. Because of my Ranger training I realise that it would be impractical to seek a job as a clerk and I will also admit that I would not be very interested in such a job, although I would do it if necessary.”
“I need to find some employment in order to support my Ranger training and then my career as a Ranger, but I would prefer to find a job that will complement the training. I appreciate that you really need someone who can be in the shop for regular hours and be able to work on the products when the shop is quiet so I am not really what you are looking for. On the other hand I am very keen to learn more about leather working and I hope that its something that would fit in with the somewhat irregular hours that would best fit with the Ranger training.”
He bit his inner lip and wondered how Tev would respond. S'Lon accepted that he was not the best candidate for the job because he would not be suitable for the clerk position, but against this he was likely more motivated to learn the leather working than someone interested in a shop keeping role.
S'Lon
Tev replied "We should be able to work out something that will suit you. This type of craft works in with Ranger skills. Additionally you ought to earn enough to get what you need as a Ranger. Keep in mind that when a Ranger has more crowns than he needs then he begins to support the Ranger Hall. I'll show you what we have here and then I hope to have someone else train you in the procedures.
They went to the back room where there was a vat in which pieces of leather were being tanned. Tev then pointed to a table on which there were hides. "This is where we cut the patterns. The book has the patterns themselves that you will use as guides for cutting. After that you use a special tool to score a channel at the edges where you will do the stitching. Are you still interested?"
The process for the financing of the Ranger Hall became clearer with Tev’s words and he found himself nodding in comprehension. So that’s how the Hall is financed, he thought to himself. He had always assumed that there was some subsidy from the city, and perhaps there was but it gave him a warm feeling to realise that the Rangers were indeed self-sufficient.
As they entered the back room the smell washed over S'Lon. It had been present in the front of the shop too, but there it had been overwhelmed by the smell of the leather itself – a warm and pleasant smell that evoked memories to S'Lon, yet memories that he could not quite put his finger on. This smell however was more immediately recognisable and far less pleasant. On the other hand, Narim itself was not exactly fragrant and compared to the smell of rotting fish that permeated the Bottoms this smell was not so bad. Stepping into the room, the source became visible as the tanning vat. He listened with interest to the descriptions and was curious to handle the pattern book to see exactly what it contained.
Nodding, he replied to Tev, “yes, I’m still interested. The process seems very interesting – when can I start, or is there something more you need to know?”
The smell of leather rushed into Tius' nostrils. With an ease he welcomed himself in the wonderful shop.
" Greetings, I have a custom, and what it seems a most difficult job for most to have done. Starting with the price range and then the confirmation of your abilities to create it, I would be extremely thankful." Tius took a deep breathe, then smiled.
" You see I need a "X"-like cross that will buckle just at the center of my chest. On both of the x-straps, just before they cross, two adjustable loops that will fit one handed battle axes should be placed. I need a fused sheath that will contain a 10" dagger blade and smaller 71/2" hunting knife, the sheath should be of black leather. The dagger should go behind the hunting knife, if that makes any sense. I also need for the fused sheath to have four slits, a set toward the top and a set towad the bottom, the slits should be 2" wide, each."
S'Lon
Things look good for you working here. It should be just fine. I'll have the Shop Manager take you in hand and teach you the craft. It will start slow and then gradually you will be able to make just about any leather product. A muscular female Dwarf who was standing nearby, came over to S'Lon and said, "We might as well get you started right now. You look strong enough to toss the leather hides. The rest is being careful when you are cutting the patterns and doing the sewing. Are you ready to start?"
Tius
The Dwarf replied, ""We can make that just the way you want it, but it will take time and cost cost you well enough. The loops can be made in six brightenings and the cost will be 165 crowns, payment up front."
" Six brightenings, eh? Lets say if you could do it it four and I will pay 200 up front? Say you that?" Tius grinned, taking his small pouch from inside his tunic, he waited as the dwarf crossed his arms.
