The betting for the fighting was as ever popular as the fighting itself. The crowd that had assembled previous to each fight pushed right up against the table set up to take the bets, with the names of the contenders scribbled in chalk upon a slate board. Two men were busy writing down the bets as fast as they could, whilst two more collected the cash and shouted the particulars to the men writing. Behind them all, a fifth man stood at the blackboard yelling at the top of his lungs for everyone to come bet, and going over the different odds for the participants in rounds.

Each better got his bet noted on a slip of paper, with the details about whom he had bet on and how much. These slips were thrust at the better haphazardly, and then left up to him to push his way back from the table and toward the stands where the fighting would begin.
