Rose [Jaedaxia] A Place in the Abyss (OPEN)

Timestamp: Early Spring, Cryxatum, Era XXV

Springtime always came slowly in the former Carmelyn. Calling the region ‘Northumbria’ following the wars between princes and pretenders only settled the old adage among its people: winter ruled the north. Even after greenery replaced the snow and ice that blanketed the old chateaus and cobblestones of the Second Quarter, Jaedaxia’s largest historical boulevard, a chill lingered in the air. Many Jaedaxians, however, found themselves draped in cardigans and light jackets instead of the wools and furs from the previous season. To them, melting snow heralded something of an annual miracle and confirmation that the Everwinter would not return.

Beside the general chatter of new and upcoming fashion trends (fur hats and heels), visiting lecturers at the Socrates, and nouveau art exhibits at the Malvoix, a sudden scandal seemed to have gripped the city. It wasn’t as shocking as a member of House de Lylles celebrating a long, loving marriage. But strange glyphs and graffiti was springing up all over the Southern Quarter.

“Mise en abyme”

This would not have been such a problem, of course, if not for all the old money and faux nobles sending formal complaints to the Protectorat du Paix. This resulted in increased patrols after some big whigs pressured the local city council into action. But the vandalism didn’t cease. In fact, the frequency of the strange message only increased!

“Mise en abyme”

“Mise en abyme”

It was the same, strange message -- over and over -- on tavern windows, random doors, brick walls, rooftops, and even on the rears of carriages. Sometimes they were carved into the wood, painted with tar, or scribbled with chalk; stolen fruits and vegetables were scattered and arranged to form the message; then artists reported their expensive paints were carted off in the middle of the night, presumably by the same vandals.

“Mise en abyme”

“Mise en abyme”

“Mise en abyme”

Everyday people were too concerned with their own affairs to be bothered it. But it generally amused the bourgeoisie and it eventually came to the attention of peasants and lowly folk who collectively shrugged at the ‘problems’ of aristocrats.

Until the fat cats got tired of hiring peons to clean graffiti on their mansion’s walls and driveways. So they did the closest thing to community service: they offered a cash reward for adventurers and mercenaries to bring the vandals to justice. The guards objected vehemently against vigilante justice, of course, but it was too late. Everyone could suddenly get behind a worthy cause -- particularly when gold was on the line.

Welcome to Jaedaxia's Raid!

  • You may assume that your character reached Jaedaxia and heard about the rumors of vandalism.
  • Your character's wealth tier will determine what he/she may purchase in preparation for this Raid.
  • This may include equipment, supplies, and hirelings. Your introductory post will double as your opportunity to prepare (but the degree of your success/failure will be moderated).
  • After that, all Players have five (5) turns to successfully find as many vandals they can to turn in for their reward(s)
  • If you are incapacitated or do not find any vandals, you will not earn any rewards
  • Posting may take place 1-2 times per day. Minimum 1 post per 24 hours.
  • Adventure Begins February 9, 2018 at 4:00 pm Los Angeles time. No new players accepted afterwards.

Moss took a moment to breathe in the fresh seaside air as he arrived in Jaedaxia. He was a month later than he'd intended to be. His return trip to Jaedaxia had been interrupted by something of a detour via Xania, but now that that town's woes had been sufficiently dealt with, and the mystic had recovered sufficiently, he was able to return to Jaedaxia.

The bearded amnesiac knew he had history in the city that went back to his childhood, but he had more recent history there, too, unexpectedly reuniting with an old friend and that alone was enough to make him feel as though he was somewhere that verged on being somewhere he could call home.

However, it didn't take long for Moss to hear a puzzling rumour of graffiti across the Southern Quarter. In truth, he found it puzzling mostly because the rumour itself seemed so benign. Petty vandalism and markings placed on public locations was nothing new. Sure, Moss would have preferred the city to be spotless, but he also knew that was an impractical to uphold.

It was only when the mystic took a stroll through that part of the city, more to satisfy his curiosity than anything else, that he realised the extent of the graffiti. 'Mise en abyme' appeared to be in every direction he looked, and he found himself pondering its meaning. In the local tongue, 'mise en' meant to implement something, or to set it in place, but the last word, 'abyme' meant nothing to him.

Was it the name of a local gang? A protest of some kind? A call to arms, perhaps? Was this the first sign of something ominous - a revolution of some sort?

Moss had no answers, and all of a sudden he found himself caught up in the hysteria that had hit the city. This was worthy of the whispers it had been given in the local taverns and back streets. And that meant it was a puzzle worth solving.

Once he caught wind that there would be a reward offered for capturing any of the vandals - or, more importantly, for cleaning up some of the city he was so fond of - Moss set about getting involved. He asked local merchants and bartenders if they'd heard where these vandals resided or for any notable locations in the Southern Quarter that had not been marked. He sought information from one of the guards to learn what had happened during their patrols and if they had any more information on the groups. And he queried the sailors at the docks - often the origin of new rumours to a city - if they had seen any vandalism or if they had brought in any paint in their ships' cargo holds.

Hopefully armed with more information, Moss set about seeking more tangible support: extra rope from the merchants; a few coins sent to his favourite bartenders to act as an extra set of eyes and ears, promising them a share of the reward if their information helped to catch vandals; any fishing nets that the sailors could spare.

And then Moss sought other like-minded adventurers, making his presence known to a few of the well-to-dos until he found those responsible for offering the reward so as to declare his interest.

In truth, Moss had no idea what he was doing, but he had already spent far too much time and energy to not follow through. And if it backfired...well, with all those new nets, he could always take up fishing.

Barthelme was there. Why? Well, definitely not because he cared about collecting a bounty on vandals.

He was here because the rumors had intrigued him. "Mise en abyme." An artistic term for the technique of placing an image within itself, in order to suggest an eternally recurring sequence. But what was the meaning in this context? Was it just a fad among young Jaedaxienne art students? Possibly! But even then, Barthelme had long been interested by the Jaedaxienne artists' limited but still fascinating understanding of the Nightmare. Portaits of Borthanas and Risthal and such as blood-vomiting angels. Barthelme even had one of the latter hanging on the wall in his house. He'd stolen liberated it from an illicit underground art gallery during his last visit to this city.

So, yes, if all of this was just a guerrilla art project, Barthelme was interested.

But what if it was something more? The sign of some grand design of the Nightmare at work? Barthelme had to know.

After the events at Xania, Barthelme had reactivated his Dream Bond with Sylaphormes. By this time the immediate magic would have faded, but the bond itself would remain. That meant that Barthelme was accompanied by his Otherlings this time around... and, it also meant that he could walk the Dreamscape as Puppet-Bithisarea, now part of Sylaphormes' own Visage. And so, the Twisted's preparations for this particular adventure had mostly just consisted of slithering through the dreams and nightmares of Jaedaxia, hoping to find something he could use to track down one or more of the vandals in the waking world. He had many questions for the graffiti artists... whoever they were.

Of course, if Barthelme had been unable to locate any vandals in the Dreamscape, he had a totally brilliant alternate plan!

“Mise en abyme”

“Mise en abyme”

“Mise en abyme”

“Mise en abyme”

That's right! Barthelme was totally going undercover as a graffiti artist himself! He would just go lurking around graffiti-tagging the key phrase everywhere he could. That way maybe the vandals would think he was one of their own, or at least a sympathizer, and approach him to strike up a conversation!

What if an adventurer or a city guard or someone tried to capture Barthelme for a bounty? Well, he was writing his messages in colored chalks which he had purchased himself, and definitely not in stolen paint. Proof positive that he was an innocent man! Though really, better still if he could just escape anyone who tried to capture him. To that end, Barthelme was wearing his purple robes over his usual armor and stuff, with the hood pulled down over his face so he wouldn't immediately be recognized and end up wanted in Jaedaxia for... what? Drawing on public property with totally washable chalk? A petty charge, easily resolved by Mind Controlling the local gendarmes to believe they couldn't be bothered to arrest him for it.

"Speaking for all of us, Barthelme, I can see no way this could possibly go wrong!"

But, you know, if Barthelme ran across Moss or anyone else he recognized, he would quietly approach them to explain his ingenious and definitely not crazy stratagem. Just so they didn't get any bright ideas about trying to throw a net over him or something. That would be annoying!

Spare dagger and boot knife

Dream Bond takes up 1/3 of Barthelme's Vis to maintain, but per the rules of the thread, he won't actually be using any magic anyway. I figured the bond itself would be allowable because all it does is allow Barthelme to function as a Twisted again.

Dunno if an Invisible Sylaphormes is allowed in this thread, but if so, he'd have asked her to watch over him from a distance.

Dwarves and wharves. A match made in Aeternia. At least he wasn't at sea any more. Hoskuld rubbed the back of his head, where he could still feel the welt that betokened his latest call to adventure, and then looked back at his erstwhile ship, the We Bonked A Random Dwarf On the Head For No Reason And Brought Him Here and Then Didn't Even Let Him Join Our Crew. "Suck it, ship", he muttered in fond farewell.

Miraculously, he had been able to recover the bulk of his stuff before disembarking. It probably helped that none of it would fit the sailors, or was crappy in quality. The only suitable candidate for theft would have been the battle axe, but sailors preferred hatchets, so he even got that back. He'd even managed to come out a length of rope to the good. If there was one thing ships had lying around aplenty, it was rope.

He turned away from ship and sea and took stock of his new surroundings. What with the docks being busy at the time, and him being the only dwarf to have just gotten off the latest boat, his new surroundings were taking stock of him, too. Jaedaxians sure did stare and point a lot.

They also talked funny, and wrote even funnier. When someone had first told him that those graffiti he'd noticed on some of the shipping crates read "Bees on a beam", he reckoned they were pulling his leg. Now he just reckoned they didn't know how to spell.

Well, since he was now in Jaedaxia with no return passage booked, Hoskuld would be looking for something to do, preferably something that paid. As he walked through the dockyards and further into town, he kept seeing more of those "Bees on a beam" messages everywhere, and it occured to him to ask around about it, which he did whenever he found somebody he overheard talking common rather than Charismean. Apparently there were bees on a beam scrawled all over the city, and people had decided that they wanted it to stop. There was apparently some sort of bounty out on the vandals who did it.

Bounties were a quick way to get money, and Hoskuld needed money. Sounded like a plan. Now the dwarf just had to figure out how to make it look like a plan. How did one catch and secure vandals? The same way the sailors got him, perhaps. He had rope, and could hog-tie with the best of'em.

He also had weapons, but he figured that daggers and battle axes might be too lethal for this sort of work. The bigwigs offering bounties apparently wanted the vandals alive, perhaps deeming vigilante execution a bit harsh for tagging the Palace de Hoity-Toity (which the locals probably pronounced "Ploss duh Weeshy" or something).

Rubbing the lump on the back of his head again, the dwarf decided only one armament would do for this kind of work: a cudgel, a good old-fashioned club. Or perhaps a bad new-fashioned club. He set about finding either one or the other, starting in the dock area. Another thing that might come in handy would be a net. They might have some of those in the dockyards, too.

While he was collecting these items, Hoskuld noted a large, capable-looking human sort who was apparently asking the same questions and seeking the same items he was. It occured to him that he might introduce himself and suggest that they could work together. Haargrim's son was the middle kid of a big family, so he understood the importance of working together as a team and then taking all the credit for oneself later. So he walked right up to the big guy and said: "Serale, name's Hoskuld Coal-beard. You look like you're shoppin' for the same stuff I am, and I'm gonna guess it's for the same reason." He pointed at one of the nearby misspelled scrawls.

At the last moment he caught himself and added as an afterthought: "Oh, pardon! ummm, parlay-voo common, wee?"

Secrets :

Equipment:

Items he will make a point of having with him in this adventure:

Two cheap knives, one with slight acid damage
Some rope
A battered miner's helmet
A miner's utility belt suitable for hooking up tools and such
A water skin as well as one metal canteen

A club
Some sort of net

Items he will most likely stow at first opportunity

A satchel with his unworn clothes and some rations
A bag full of miscellaneous climbing accoutrements (karabiners, gri-gris, slings)
A torch
A rock hammer (not really useable as a weapon, unless the vandals are fae, or rocks from a bad part of town)
One half-way decent battle axe
A "personal item"
A badly scratched hand glass

"Mise en abyme"

She didn't have the slightest idea of what it meant, but it seemed it was one of the ongoing topics of discussion around Jaedaxia. She had first read it written somewhere in the city but she had heard of it more the morning after she had reached Jaedaxia, when she was having breakfast in the tavern she had choosen. Sipping on her tea, she had heard people talking about the cash reward for anyone who could bring to "justice" these people writing around.

At first, she had ignored it, the cash prize was tempting but... Xania's night party had left her... meh. Craky wasn't the right term but she just didn't want to lunch herself in another adventure that soon. Or so she thought. She had lazily relaxed in her room, taking a day out before moving back to Demios, only that the words "Mise en abyme" started popping back up in the back, more to the front of her mind than the back of it, as she lazily napped.

"Mise en abyme"

She groaned, why her adventurous self couldn't really stay put and quiet?!

As the sun was raising high in the sky, she put her nose out and took a walk around the city. The graffiti were written in any way possible and quite everywhere. So there wasn't much to find on this way. She doubted as she was now she could find anything at all, she was a girl and knew how certain people thought. She knew it wouldn't be easy to get a hold on one of the vandals. But maybe.

On the trip back to the tavern, she stopped in a pair of shops to buy a few provisions and once back in her room she started working. If she had entered as a beautiful young woman, she left as a boyThe way she was dressed and made up in her first Acting thread, see link in the * .* that could have belonged without problems to less rich neighborhoods of many cities.

Perfect to blend in, right?

Alwin Claridge is an upstanding Citizen
News spread fast...
And no news spread faster than the ones involving a reward in gold!
Or at least for Alwin those were the fastest kind!
He was on is way to Jaedaxia when the graffiti nonsense reached him when entering the city actually no one could enter a tabern without hearing something about those graffiti.

"Mise en abyme"

It seems that everyone had a theory and each one was more ridiculous than the last...
At first Alwin couldn't care less about those graffitis and the theories just made him laught.

But then something changed.

"Mise en abyme"

He realized those words were allways on the back of his mind...

"Mise en abyme"
"Mise en abyme"
"Mise en abyme"
"Mise en abyme"

And after a few days he couldn't think about anything else "What does it mean? Who's making them? And what for?"

Finally Alwin decided to discover the ones behind those graffitis, not that he cared about the city or the people that leave there but that mistery must be solved.
And off couse the gold reward was allways nice!

So after putting a lot of thought to it he decided that the fastest way to get info about the ones behind the 'words' was talking to pedlars ,the ones allways there on the streets. Not hopping to get staight answers but at least some clues about it.

Sounds of scuffled parchment echoed gently in the room as Keldon leaned back in his chair reading. The wind off the coastline gently blowing into the Retraite Du Pere. Spring, it was one of his most beloved seasons on the coastline and one of the reasons he fell in love with the countryside, outside Summer itself.

Mise en abyme, Mise en abyme.

A phrase that came up in a handful of reports on the dealings in the area, all seemingly focused within Jaedaixa itself. A slight shrug as Keldon mused it was a problem for the local guard. One he knew they would resolve at some point, given his relationship with the guard there he was quite sure if it needed reviewing they would find it. But someone painting odd words of spiraling into the abyss just seemed like one of the normal lunatics on Jaedaixa doing the normal things they do.

Picking up the brightenings coffee and the stack of parchment he stepped outside on the porch overlooking the ocean, the walls of Jaedaxia visable over the rolling hills and forests as the castle looks outwards over the countryside.

It wasn't until he opened a letter from a friend of his within the city, a shop owner who he helped provide shelter and wood for during the Everwinter. It wrote of his family and friends, and his frustration over these dammed markings.

He had always told those he met if they ever needed anything all they had to do was ask. Of course, if the local guard had increase their patrols the kids behind it likely knew exactly what they were doing and the routes. Eventually they would get board and find something else to occupy their time with. But their persistence reminded him of the resurgence of the brotherhood, and that was a curiosity he couldn't ignore.

It only took a candlemark before he had assembled a small party of guardsmen from the castle city, giving them their instructions. They were to fan out across the Second Quarter and mark the locations of the grafitti on maps, and then coordinate with Marcus who would be fixed at the main entry to the Second Quarter. Keldon wanted to see if any patterns emerged in the placement of the markings. Something he doubted but one thing he knew was to never take a chance when something started to show a pattern, and clearly these markings were being placed for a reason. It could be a simple reason of driving the local guardsmen insane with trying to catch someone they couldn't. Or there could be more.

So the dragons descended on their mounts and began to separate on the roads just before they approached the city. The elf-lord did not want to ride into the city with a armed escort. Instead arrived through the gates with only he and Marcus.

Once inside the city he would make his way to the heart of the Second Quarter where his acquaintances shop was located and dismounted Tathar, his hand running down gently of the animals mane as he smiled. Tathar ruffling his feathers gently.

Keldon found one of the locations where the graffiti was painted in what looked like paint on a wood wall. Looking over it and then around to see if there was any indication of it pointing somewhere. If it didn't he would allow himself to slip into clara and inspect what was in front of him. It was possible these were placed with the use of arcana, though it seemed like it might be a impractical application of a refined art. It would explain why someone was unable to locate those who made the marks, and why from what he heard they appeared so spuratically around the city and within contained areas.

If that yielded no suggestions or clues, he would make his way into the local shops and ask some questions. Then he would seek out some of the more well skilled underlings of the city and offer gold for questions. Of course that would mean he needed to find the more rift raft characters.

It was not the rumours of graffiti artists in the making that had led Jade to Jaedaxia but business of another sort. Her decision to remain on Demios and raise her daughter was one that she did not regret, especially as she had help along the way from Vaishen, but she did miss her wanderlustful way, journying all over Telath for no reason other than she could. It was a life that was difficult to resume when she had a precocious little three year old at her side as well as a drake who was still less than stellar after their near death experience some time ago.

All in all, Jade was pleased that she was able to leave Davina with Vaishen while she journeyed over to Jaedaxia. It was less than ideal, not being able to feel the beautiful feeling of flying with her bondmate and she knew how difficult it was for Emrys as well but this was why she had chosen to venture to Jaedaxia. There was a healer who specialized in large creatures and she intended on bringing him back to Demios to sort Emrys out, it was important for herslf as well as her fire drake.

There was a sense of relief that she was able to venture into the city without having to ensure that her child hadn't wandered off. Motherhood was hard! It was not long after she had come to Jaedaxia that she heard about the strange markings as well as the rather odd offer of gold in exchange for finding those responsible. Was it really that big of a deal?

'Mise en abyme' was etched into various places as Jade walked around the city, someone was out to make a point and given how widespread it was, she assumed it was more than just one someone. Adjusting the cloak over her shoulders, Jade couldn't help but feel a little naked without her quartestaff in hand as she had viewed it as a sense of security and familiarity. On her back she carried a crossbow and her usual array of shurikens and daggers were in place as well. A pouch at her side carried various essentials as well as some coins in case she needed to buy something.

Did she actually want to involve herself in this strange little misadventure? It didn't seem like the sort that would involve a lot of action and instead would call out to a bunch of greedy motherfeckers who would do anything for gold. She had been that sort before...

That being said, she couldn't deny that she was curious about the markings. Was it all a senseless prank by some randos or did it mean something? There was no doubt that others would be looking into this and with the bounty out, the vandals would take great care to blend in or hide. It wasn't as though they would be simply to spot if none of them had been spotted yet.

How to go about this? The white-haired woman chose to move about the darker alleyways of Jaedaxia in hope of spotting something interesting. She would keep a look out for more of the glyphs and wording, one never knew what hid in the dark.

Secrets :
Items on person
  1. Black corset dress and black boots, no armor
  2. Snake Skin gloves - Snake skin gloves with padded leather inside to keep the hand insulated but prevent any moisture from entering. It was also an excellent grip when wielding a weapon.
  3. Dark cloak - Magical properties, allows the user to become near invisible in the shadows.
  4. Crossbow - The last one was all metal, a combination of steel and brass. It was the most ornately stylized of the three, and had a fan style attachment that would store a dozen bolts. 20 crossbow bolts, 12 in the crossbow and the rest carried in a pouch at her side.
  5. Compass Rose Shurikens and Throwing daggers - Bought in Zinn'Sunn, Jade keeps the shurikens in a sling that often hangs around her waist and the daggers on various places on her person. Both types of weapons have been warped and then reified using sorcery and mysticism essence. They have better aim, being slightly guided toward Jade's intended target and can be called back to her hand with a thought, weapons must be within line of sight to be called back.
  6. Silver Hip Flask - A silver hip-flask that has a combination of elementalism and sorcery contamination. It is capable of pulling moisture from the air and filling the flask with drinkable water.
  7. Globe of light - Jade's first creation. The item is a simple globe made of glass that has been warped to be quite strong. Inside flickers a dim light and the globe itself gives off residual heat though it does not burn when held. The light does not fade nor go out and it smells reminiscent to the earth and the sea.

Not unlike a few others who were - unbeknownst to Kailin - currently kicking around the city of Jaedaxia, she and Calanon had made the trip east from Arium after concluding the business in Xania. He had split off before they ever reached the city, though, heading into Trysvale while she continued north.

And so she had spent a pleasant - and much needed - few brightenings dusting off the studio she kept at Le Refuge de l’Artiste, splitting her time between laying out some sketches of the things she'd seen in Xania and offering up her magic at local clinics, as she'd taken to doing while traveling the empire.

Given that she had taken up residence again at her preferred inn on Le Rue Felix (the better for Calanon to find her when he finally arrived in the city), her brightenings were pretty much spent entirely within the very southern quarter where all the graffiti had been going up. It was, thus, the topic of conversation on everyone's lips, from the taverns she frequented to the other artists at Le Refuge, who had apparently seen their own supplies turn up missing on occasion. In fact, the first thing she'd done upon unlocking her own studio was to check her supplies, worried that - having been so conspicuously absent - her paints and brushes might have made easy pickings.

Ever curious, Kailin had found herself asking questions of the other artists she spent time with. Did they know who was doing it? She suspected that a fair few of her colleagues had succumbed to the lure of graffiti in their time, but these were words. A slogan of sorts, it seemed to her, or a call to action. Less art than putting the people of the southern quarter on notice for some reason.

That was what had snagged her interest. What did they want? What was their goal? Kailin couldn't help but worry as the call for vigilante justice went out, the offer of gold would no doubt see more than a few innocent heads cracked before this was over, and she wanted no part of it.

But to solve the mystery? Yes... that she could not help but lust after. So while others were buying supplies and readying themselves to go after the miscreants, Kailin was wrapping herself in her cloak against the chill of the early spring darkening to come. Her route was wandering as her steps lead through Mavloix - she'd spent her brightening tending to a few less fortunate who'd suffered the worst of winter in the easter quarter - into the Ponts arrondissement and toward Libertas, and she kept a casual eye out for those who looked as if they had mischief on the mind.

One thing that she'd heard in all the rumors that had been flying around, and the many suppositions about the meaning of the slogan was the word center. Which, even when paired with the word abyss made Kailin think of only a single place here in Jaedaxia. Thus far, she'd kept her steps from turning in that direction, hoping to catch someone in the act so as to be able to ask. She wasn't so foolhardy that she would head toward the center of the city without good cause, and a fair bit of support. Probably. Most likely.

But it was there in the back of her mind as she wandered. The abyss. The center. What if it was directing them toward the Cloison, that forbidden place at the center of the city? She'd been there once, foolishly curious... and had been lucky enough to leave intact.

It was thoughts of that experience that led her to the one single purchase she would make, that of a hand-held oil lantern. In case she was caught out after dusk, Kailin did not fancy returning along these streets without light to guide her steps.

And as she was looking around for mysterious figures, Kailin spotted one suchJade heading down an alley as she passed it. Suspicious, that. Kailin did not directly follow the figure, but turned so that her steps paralleled the other's. Perhaps she had finally gotten lucky and found someone who might have answers for her.

Secrets :

Actions:
  • Asked questions of artist friends about vandals
  • Bought a simple oil lantern
  • Is wandering in search of suspicious looking folks
  • Just began to tail Jade at a distance (parallel to her), because she thought she looked suspicious wandering down alleys
Equipment:
  • Simple leather armor and boots - due to preparations made for a day spent in Eastern Jae, the rougher area of town
  • Cloak
  • Dagger (still coated in "blessed oil" I suppose- highly affective against undead)
  • Satchel containing:
    • Bandages - basic medical supplies
    • paper, chalk, and charcoal
Vis Level: 0/9 - spent in healing

[top]”Jaedaxia”

Moss asked around some local haunts that catered to travelers and adventurers alike. Jaedaxians were colorful and friendly folk. But the language barrier sometimes got in the way. They tended to elongate some vowels and omit others altogether. The guards were a more varied group but they could hardly be called helpful. When they noticed Moss’ interest in pursuing the matter for coin, they quickly dismissed him and warned him about getting in trouble. They suggested that the dungeons beneath Le Protectorat du Paix was having a ‘heating issue’, making it especially inhospitable to prisoners awaiting court dates. The sailors were mostly braggarts more interested in gambling or bartering silvers for more booze or whores. But they did offer a trinket of unusual information: they’ve seen a pig trying to get into their cargo, as if desperately fleeing from the city by ship. They could also sell Moss some old rope nets for a few coppers each. Mostly because they didn’t own the nets and it was their way to pissing off the merchant ship’s captain. He noticed a dwarf in the market for a good ol’ fashioned bludgeoning implement talking to a lanky sea rat with a glass eye. This dwarf even attempted some half-baked Jaedaxienne to break the ice. (Continued)

Barthelme spent most of his ‘vacation’ asleep and submerged inside the Nightmare. In his incredibly creepy visage, he slithered through the dreams and sowed nightmares where he could. This was not exactly an all-access pass since the Dreamscape, while universal, only allowed the Twisted direct access-pass to everyone and anyone. Barthelme still needed personal connections, material or otherwise, with the person(s) he wanted to ‘visit’. As it were, he caught only glimpses of random persons who were sleeping close to him (probably in the adjoining rooms of the inn or something). So he opted for the alternate plan: graffiti Jaedaxia himself with some colorful chalk! For some reasonBarthelme agreed to use only his level 1 skills to join this Raid :), his Big Sister seemed to have an important appointment meaning she could not join him on this experiment. (Continued)

Hoskuld eventually arrived with his belongings and a length of corded rope for good measure. A short tour of the city revealed that the locals were seeking some bees, preferably on a beam of some kind. While the dwarf considered the repeated typos to be a serious indictment of the schola system, he was drawn to the rumors of rich folks paying brave souls to capture these illiterate vandals. Starting at the docks, he found some sailors more than willing to part with their old, bruised/chipped wooden crudgels for a few coppers. One sea rat in particular with a glass eye was enthusiastically selling his bludgeoning weapon as part of his attempt to raise retirement funds. The dwarf also noticed another fellow who was in the market for some rope nets. So Hoskuld greeted the human in both Common and his best parody of Jaedaxienne. (Continued)

Diamea was just waiting for the next boat ride to Demios. But the persistent rumors about adventurers looking for the vandals responsible for the graffiti proved too much to ignore. After buying some supplies, Diamea decided to go in disguise. So out came Darling Boy -- complete with nondescript boyish, peasant garb! Would she blend in? Was her hair still black and blue? Further away from her, Darling Boy noticed a commotion after a winged horse landed near the gates! (Continued)

Alwin came, he thought, and decided to interrogate some street hawkers and counterculture folks who lived in alleys and the like. He met some street vendors who talked in dizzying speed about everything and nothing; most of the transient denizens of Jaedaxia tried to scam him or beg for a few spare coins. At one point, Alwin was offered to buy a skewer of stinky tofu -- apparently a type of Kemite street food -- for ‘hot tips’ on the recent fashion scene. But the Elementalist also learned that there were strange sightings among the homeless community: limping crows that didn’t fly, dog-sized rabbits, and rabbit-sized elephants. Weird, right? But Alwin couldn’t be sure if those counted as ‘clues’ or just signs of drug abuse. Further away from him, Alwin noticed a commotion after a winged horse landed near the gates! (Continued)

Keldon Elsdragon realized quickly that his holdings could not handle an abrupt and elaborate reassignment of his castle guards for a personal errand. Well, it might work but that was highly recommended against. Because by the time Keldon’s orders could be delivered and word reached the guardsmen, they would have to return from patrol, briefed, and the cost would have fallen under the ‘not worth it’ category. So the lord of Dragons Cliff had to resign to arriving alone on a pegasus instead. Which drew quite a bit of attention, even at the gates. And MarcusI cannot find this NPC in your CIR? Where was he? Maybe he was late. Some onlookers, travelers, and even the local urchins quickly crowded around Keldon and his mount. It was like walking with a beautiful golden retriever -- except Lord Elsdragon decided to walk his winged pegasus instead. Everyone and their mother suddenly wanted to pet his horse. Some were even venturing to pull a feather (or two) -- which Tathar retorted with an angry neigh at the offending peasants’ fingers! (Continued)

Jade was in town to look for a veterinarian specializing in large, fire breathing reptiles that could fly and snack on humans. That’s bound to be an easy errand. While the mercenary mused about the good ol’ days before motherhood, she noticed the odd scribbles all around the city. Not having her quarterstaff was also an odd feeling. But it turns out that Jade counted shurikens and a crossbow as part of a lady’s ‘essentials’. While she considered going on another misadventure, she walked into an alley and saw some beggars trying to scam a tourist. The spellbreaker could smell elemental essence on this youngster. But before she could think on that further, a commotion alerted her to something winged and fancy landing near the gates. (Continued)

Kailin was recharging her creative spirit while simultaneously wary of rumored vandals stealing her painting supplies. So she decided to investigate. Starting at the chateaus housing famous paintings and showcasing the newest masters of fine arts, she wandered down to the Libertas where art meant little to wharf workers and fishermen. In that time, the thaumaturge saw many more iterations of the infamous phrase. She also noticed that most Jaedaxians went on with their lives. So perhaps this was a rich man’s game -- an attempt to punish those who would challenge their vanity. Kailin was on her way back from the docks when she suddenly noticed something strange: the biggest rabbit she’d ever seen. It was probably the size of a bloodhound or larger. When their gazes met, the rabbit began to waddle away -- toward downtown Jaedaxia where Kailin intended to go in the first place. Now, it was surprisingly spritely for such an obese creature. So Kailin nearly had to jog to keep up. The rabbit also seemed to know where to duck, climb, and sneak in order to attract the least amount of attention from any passerbys. (Continued)

EVERYONE:

At the gates leading to the Southern Quarter, Keldon was being bum rushed by a combination of tourists who wanted to take (mental) pictures of some elf with a pegasus, locals who wanted to pet his horse, and superstitious folk who wanted to pull out Tathar’s feathers for their own use. The Lord of Dragons Cliff was not in a feasible or sustainable position.
”Showstopper” Secret Achievement unlocked. Keldon’s renown will increase in Northumbria. Whether or not that’s a good thing is left to be seen …

“That’s the Dragon Lord of summat!”

“No, he’s the horse lord, ain’t he?”

“Milord! Milord! Can I have a portrait? It will only take four to six hours! Stand still, please!”

“What’s that flying horse’s name?”

“What’s that? Taters?”

“The horse’s name is Taters!”

Meanwhile, Alwin, Diamea, and Jade were in the outskirts of the crowds. But they could see a rather important-looking elf being pulled from all directions. His pegasus, however, was not having a good time at all. The poor creature snorted and neighed warnings at the many hands trying to touch him or pull feathers from his folded wings. Strangely enough, Jade sensed something else: druidism. Her gaze followed the odd ‘scent’ and discovered a family of rodents skittering frantically around the pegasus’ hooved feet. They appeared to be comically trying to vy for its attention -- waving their tiny arms in the air like they just didn’t care!

--

While Moss and Hoskuld bartered and chatted at the docks, they continued to hear the glassy-eyed sailor go on one tangent after another.

“I’m turning thirty soon, you see? That’s mid-life! I gave my youth to this damned enterprise! And for what? For them to cut my hours and benefits? Curse ye, Balm & Butler, LLC! It’s ageism! Down with capitalism! Down with the Imperium! #NotMyEmpress!”

At some point between Glass Eye’s rant about free trade and his desire for Jaedaxia’s secession (again), the two adventurers noticed a gull being bullied by some other birds. While neither man or dwarf could claim to be ornithologists, they suspected that this was not normal behavior among seagulls. Especially since the lone seagull was blue and its wings were spread awkwardly, as if Blue could hardly believe it had wings in the first place.

“So anyway, to make a long story short”, Glass Eye continued. “Do ya want my billy club or what?”

--

Meanwhile, Kailin neared the haunted heart of Jaedaxia. The fanfare, crowds, and glamor of the City of Fates faded away from her surroundings. It was replaced by boarded windows, abandoned shoppes, and unkempt cobblestones. The air seemed ...different here, so far away yet just a stone’s throw away from all the sights and scenes of Jaedaxia. Downtown had the look of an abandoned child who was left to fend for himself, growing feral and dangerous. It was clear that she was out of her element when she noticed squatters and others cast away from proper society.

Then there was the Fat Rabbit. It seemed to lead her right to the Wall of Weeping. Which, by now, had become a stone structure tangled with creeping vines and graffiti. But fresh, red paint now covered the rest of the old scribbles. It read:

“Seeing is believing.
Whatever was thought or said,

these persistent, inexorable deaths
make faith as such absent,

our humanness a question,
a disgust for what we are.

Whatever the hope,
here it is lost.

Because we coveted our difference,
here is the cost.”

Strangely enough, the Fat Rabbit continued to stare at the poem which covered the entire Wall of Weeping with blood red script as if reading it multiple times, straining to understand it.

--

Unbeknownst to Kailin and Fat Rabbit, Barthelme was graffiti-ing the biggest wall he could find right on the other side of the Wall of Weeping!

Hoskuld nodded sympathetically as Glass Eye prattled about his differences with management concerning his benefits. That was definitely something the dwarf could sympathize with. If there was one thing he couldn't stand, it was people paying him to do stuff. Actually, that didn't quite sound right. OK, so it was the people who paid him to do stuff he couldn't stand. That was it.

"Can't trust an employer," he grunted encouragingly, at least half-meaning it. Once the dwarves at the gem mines in Primus Gaudeo had tried to organize to improve their negotiating position, and management responded by posting guards equipped with clubs to improve *their* negotiating position. The ensuing negotiations didn't turn out well for labor.

And speaking of clubs, the dwarf now turned to appraise Glass Eye's proferred cudgel. It didn't look like much, but it was well within Coal-beard's price range. And size range. He turned to a random neighbor quizzically as if to ask his opinion. Other Old Sea Dog eyed the club dubiously for a moment before saying: "Eeerrrmm, wee mo sure," without much conviction in his voice. "Foot de mew" he added with a slight shrug.

Foot de mew? Was *that* what this type of club was called? Hoskuld wondered, looking at it again. What did "foot de mew" mean? "Foot" was easy. "Mew"?
"Cat", the dwarf decided after a moment. So cat's foot. Well, it did look a bit like a cat's foot, and Hoskuld knew from experience that cats sometimes used their feet to club things, such as the exposed noses of sleeping dwarves.

Must have been a pretty big cat, though. A Sherian Swordtooth or Great Panther. At any rate, since there didn't seem to be anything better than the foot-de-mew at the moment, and since the dwarf somewhat liked the idea of wielding a Great Panther foot, he agreed to purchase it from Glass Eye for the asking price.

Hoskuld regarded his new purchase with satisfaction and decided it needed a name. Glass Eye had called it "Billy", but that struck the dwarf as disrespectful to the memory of such a magnificent great cat. "Fluffy" was a much better name, he decided. Renowned bounty hunter Hoskuld Coal-beard, plying the streets of Jaedaxia with his dreaded foot-de-mew, Fluffy. He picked out the biggest ring on his utility belt and threaded Fluffy's handle through it, noting with satisfaction how the ring caught the foot-de-mew right at its head. After wondering briefly just how a cat's foot could have a head, he then continued his banter with Moss and search for a net.

Apart from canaries, Hoskuld wasn't much for birds, so he didn't really know what to make of the loud spectacle that suddenly presented itself with the gulls. They were squawking "Mine!Mine!Mine!" at each other as gulls often did, but there was something different: one of the gulls was a funny color, and was behaving oddly; more importantly, it was moving awkwardly. This would be a good opportunity to experiment with throwing his net, the dwarf decided. He didn't actually know the first thing about catching things in nets, so a dry run involving an ungainly seagull might offer some much-needed practice. Besides, a blue seagull was unique enough that somebody might offer the dwarf something for it. Or maybe the gull was really a beautiful witch or faerie in bird form that would offer him favors for releasing her.

The blue gull could also offer a chance to practice with Fluffy, he reflected, but Hoskuld had gathered that sailors considered killing seagulls bad luck, so he wouldn't harm the bird if he could avoid it.

Once he had got himself a net, Hoskuld would stalk up to the gulls, carefully shaking the net out and readying it for the throw. If he had to drop some breadcrumbs from his rations to lure the birds close enough he would, but once he judged his quarry to be in range, he would give the net a dwarf's-best-guess-at-how-to-throw-a-net-to-snare-something and see what kind of result he got.

Secrets :
Equipment:

Items he will make a point of having with him in this adventure:

Two cheap knives, one with slight acid damage
Some rope
A battered miner's helmet
A miner's utility belt suitable for hooking up tools and such
A water skin as well as one metal canteen

A club, specifically a foot-de-mew named "Fluffy"
Some sort of net

Items he will most likely stow at first opportunity

A satchel with his unworn clothes and some rations
A bag full of miscellaneous climbing accoutrements (karabiners, gri-gris, slings)
A torch
A rock hammer (not really useable as a weapon, unless the vandals are fae, or rocks from a bad part of town)
One half-way decent battle axe
A "personal item"
A badly scratched hand glass

Disguise! It felt ages ago when she had first learned the trick of turning into a street boy. It felt somewhat strange to see herself as a boy, but if she herself found herself boyish, it would be perfect! As back in Sancta, her hairs would be hidden by a hat, some floppy, used like one. Her hairs were too recognizable, long and cared for to be good for her disguise! She was a peasant boy, she couldn't show long black lady hairs!

To not be forgotten, she wasn't going to leave without some of her weapons hidden on her persona. The dagger were too visible so she left them at the inn; her knife went on her belt and two of her throwing ones in her boots. It wasn't much, but she couldnt walk around fully armed, it would spoil the disguise she was trying to portray!

In her dive toward the Southern Quarter, she found herself at the edge of a commotion. There was... a pegasus?! She raised an eyebrow and peered from the edge of the crowd at the center, there was indeed a pegasus with a knight and everybody was trying to get their hands on it, the pegasus, or on a piece of it. Well, she wasn't really interested in it and she wasn't sure if she should know the knight there so, as casually as possible, she would try to get through the crowd and in the Souther Quarter's side of the gates!

Alwin Claridge is an upstanding Citizen
Alwin saw himself on a path leading nowhere but at least the folks imagination never seazed to impress him "Rabbit-sized elephants?!? It would be a strange thing to see!"

While walking to the Souther Quarter and thinking about a new strategy to solve the 'grafitti mistery' Alwin realized he was at the edge of a commotion.

The cause of all that uproar was an Elf and apparently his flying horse, the people around them were going crazy and the poor horse was having a bad time.

"This as nothing to do with me, the Elf can take care of himself", Alwin was trying to convince himself to just keep going with his plans and went straight to the Souther Quarter... but the look on the horse muzzle and the noise made by the ablazed crowd stopped him.

So he was going to try and help the feathered stallion.

He needed to call the attention of the crowd, or the guards... looking arround he saw some guards at the gates but they seemed to be enjoying all the commotion around the Elf and the horse.

And that made Alwin decide, if he succeded he would get some stones from the ground and in the middle of the crowd he would throw them at the guards, when they lost those smiles and start investing into the crowd Alwin would go the oposite way and on his route to mistery solving at the Souther Quarter.

Looking over his shoulder he would still see the guards dispersing the excited folks with a smile in his mouth.

It was disappointing... though not exactly surprising... that Bithisarea had failed to find the same success he'd had in locating the sacrifices required by Despona through stalking the Dreamscape in Arkdün. There, he had been looking for a general type of person. Here, he was looking for someone much more specific. Whatever Barthelme's range as Puppet Bithisarea, it was clearly insufficient for him to locate his quarry. Or at least none of these so people were invested enough in the graffiti that it could be seen even in their dreams.

So, Bithisarea made the best of it by just putting the graffiti into their dreams himself! The Twisted would insert the image of a purple-robed man writing "Mise en abyme" on various surfaces into the background of every nightmare he crafted. The nightmare version of the graffiti artist would always be turned away from the dreamer, of course, so they would never see his face. But imagine the reaction from any of those dreamers caught sight of the purple-robed figure from their nightmare at work under the harsh light of the suns. That would surely be a strange enough "coincidence" to be worth mentioning. It might help get the word around, which might in turn help to draw the unknown vandals' attention.

Or if not, oh well! Inserting the image into each nightmare was but the work of a moment, anyway.

Sylaphormes had declined to hunt vandals with Barthelme. That, too, was unsurprising. He could see how inquiring into the local graffiti situation would not be her cup of tea. In point of fact, Sylaphormes' cup of tea was more like a cup of blood, which is what he assumed she was going to go help herself to while he was otherwise occupied. Definitely not Barthelme's fault! All people devoured by Sylaphormes had their Otherling-selves saved by Risthal! Anyway, while she had her plans, and Barthelme had his own.

"M m I i S s E e E e N n A a B b Y y M m E e"

"That's right: A 'Mise en abyme' inside a 'Mise en abyme!' It's an idea whose time has come!"

"Truly, a bravura moment for the 'Mise en abyme' movement as a whole."

"Noooo, too precious! Derivative! Puerile! Lacking any real insight."

"Actually, maybe Ariadne's right. BOO, then! This is the moment the whole thing jumped the shark! You've ruined it for everyone, Barthelme."

"Which makes it reflective of the decadence of the movement, then. A compelling commentary on the inherent creative sterility of an artistic movement rooted in the repetition of a memetic phrase."

"Omigosh, then it works after all! It's so delightfully meta! A heartbreaking work of staggering genius."

Barthelme looked this way and that from beneath his concealing cowl. Were there no graffiti artists rushing over to offer accolades or criticism? No would-be bounty collectors who needed to be Demir Kum-ed in the face? Well, then, Barthelme would just keep doing what he was doing. He would continue chalking more "Mise en abymes" in increasingly exotic formulations, all the way down the wall and then around to the other side of the wall. Maybe he would eventually get to see that blood red poem and stuff, too!

Kailin was... Well. It was fair to say that Kailin had a nice sized welt on her forearm from having pinched herself hard enough to bruise more than once as she followed...

She still couldn't really believe it.

A rabbit.

A GIANT rabbit.

A giant rabbit who, she was almost certain, she'd locked eyes with for at least a moment before it turned and led her straight into the part of Jaedaxia that she'd been rather intent on avoiding. But then... what else was she going to do? Ignore the big, surprisingly fast, surprisingly sneaky rabbit?

Not. A. Chance.

So Kailin found herself strongly reminded of the Gut as she passed into the run down, abandoned center of the city, only here, she didn't have the benefit of thaumaturgical armor giving her even a modicum of security. To say that she was aware of her surroundings was an understatement, and as she continued - all too knowingly - toward the Wall of Weeping, she consciously kept herself from rubbing at the gooseflesh that prickled under the fabric of her dark cloak.

Her steps slowed, and she stopped a ways back from the rotund lapinrabbit, her eyes settling on the fresh looking red paint of the poem before them, though she was too conscious of the danger here to completely ignore her surroundings. Paint that fresh? The 'artist' might still be around. What in Aeternia was going on?

There was only one thing that came to mind as she traced the outline of the ears before her, and took a hesitant step closer to the animal. Druidism must be at play.

So... having trailed the animal this far, it wasn't much more of a leap to attempt some form of communication. Was it? Did it make her crazy?

"Are you..." a rabbit?! A druid? A secret rabbit graffiti artist? A giant rabbit with a penchant for poetry? A rabbit of refined tastes? "...okay?"

Yeah... Kailin knew it was a somewhat inane question, so she simply watched the animal while trying not to stare. Yes, staring was rude. But also, this was The Wall of Weeping. So Kailin was trying really, really hard not to let her guard down.

What the feth was going on here?

Secrets :

Actions:
  • Followed the rabbit to the Wall of Weeping
  • Read the poem
  • Trying to stay vigilant about her surroundings
  • Tried to ask the rabbit if it's okay
Equipment:
  • Simple leather armor and boots - due to preparations made for a day spent in Eastern Jae, the rougher area of town
  • Cloak
  • Dagger (still coated in "blessed oil" I suppose- highly affective against undead)
  • Satchel containing:
    • Bandages - basic medical supplies
    • paper, chalk, and charcoal
Vis Level: 0/9 - spent in healing
