[Jaedaxia] Hard Times Will Always Reveal True Friends (Calanon)

Spring Era XXIV

Dante had been making trips by himself to Jaedaxia for a few cycles while Niven pulled herself together. She kept to herself at the house in Demios, getting used to the brightening in and brightening out of normal mundane life. She was enjoying getting into the routine of living with her family again. But it was taking her longer than she liked to get over her guilt and upset over the deaths of her family.

Physically, she looked much better, healthy even. She'd put on weight, which meant she didn't look as gaunt and malnourished as she had in the winter. She had curves again, which was saying a lot considering she was an elf. Her hair had now gone back to its usual corn silk smoothness. And there was once again a spring in her step.

Emotionally she was still a bit of a mess. She still had darkeningmares from time to time, which woke her in a cold sweat. And there were still times where things would hit her, and she would start to cry. But as the era progressed, those times were getting fewer and fewer, and now that it was spring, she was feeling more like getting out again, especially now that there was an actual wedding to plan.

Jaedaxia was going to have the most selection of wedding items, so here Niven was, back in town, sorting out details and making sure orders were placed for things they’d need, trying to spread the cost out rather than a bunch of purchases all at once. It made the bill easier for Dante to swallow anyway.

Jaedaxia had a new draw for her now, too, though. She'd made friends with a couple when she was last in town and knowing where they worked meant she had the opportunity to check up on them and see how they were. This alone made the city more appealing to her. Not all her experiences in Jaedaxia were so friendly.

First, Niven decided she would seek out Calanon at his position at the Universtiy of Arcane Sciences. She walked the steps of the university and asked at the front desk where she could find him. After getting directions, Niven walked towards where she was told he was and knocked.

Calanon was pretty well hidden. Not, perhaps, intentionally but the growing stacks of papers on his desk were getting out of control, not helped by the fact that he’d been staring at the same blank sheet of parchment for over a candlemark now.

Sometimes, transcribing the Wizard’s aged scrolls into common was fascinating. He had absorbed a lot of information in translating the elvish into some decipherable common. But the recent cycles had found him listless and disinterested and the work had mounted up, until it now almost eclipsed the actual surface of the desk.

He glowered at it as if it might disappear under his gaze, but alas it was not to be so.

More annoyingly, he had held the quill for so long unmoving over the paper in front of him that it had splotched ink all over everywhere so that was screwed up and sent to join the past sheets that had met the same fate and now littered his floor in crumpled up balls.

It was not hard to trace his slipping in his responsibilities back to a few cycles earlier, a fact that he was studiously ignoring, even as the little world he’d created for himself here in Jaedaxia started to shown signs of crumbling.

The knock on the door then was perhaps fortuitous, before the elf lost his temper and burnt the whole lot, before denying all knowledge of it. Expecting one of his fellow students, or perhaps the pesky little Fae that came to call every so often, his expression registered his surprise as he swung open the door to reveal the elfess.

“…Niven?”

There was a hesitant inflection, the male elf surveying his kinswoman. It was entirely unexpected to find her outside his door, having not seen her since they had first met in Winter. And that had been an odd meeting, in many ways. There had been the bizarre history she shared with Kailin, and then the undercurrent of tension in recognising their own similarities, which had proven difficult for both of them to deal with at the time.

So it was understandable that he met her appearance with a little reservation, even as he opened the door a little wider

“Mankoi naa lle sinome?” What brings you here?.

Niven smiled as the door opened to reveal her kinsman, but it faltered as she realized that he didn't look entirely happy to see her. Considering their last meeting, perhaps that was fair. He also didn't look well. Like he was under a lot of strain.

"Vedui, Mellonamin," she greeted him, finding her voice, something that had become troublesome as nervousness set in upon the greeting she'd received. "Amin naa e' ostar ar' nowa amin will elea lle. Amin sinta n'nir gwaith sinome amin naa mellon yassen." I was in town and thought I would see you. I don't know many people I'm friendly with here.

A thought struck her and her smiled faded from her lips completely as her eyes darted around, catching sight of the stacks of papers on his desk. "Amin estela amin naa il disturbien lle."I hope I am not disturbing you. She certainly didn't want to be a bother. If he was too busy, she could always come back later or perhaps meet him later for drinks or Pracenda. She did have things to do, herself, around the city.

Too late Calanon realised that he might have been less than welcoming, and he kicked himself. Following Niven's eyes to the stacks of papers, he gave a little snort at her words.

"lle naa ile, arwen en amin You are not, my lady" A shrug as he eyed the work with with something approaching apathy" Amin caela ai yassen ta ten' an faarea tanya ner karna n'uma lethien" I have done nothing with it for long enough that a little longer will make no odds

It was true, and it was not like he had been making any progress anyway. Calanon glanced around the confines of his room, and made a decision.

" Y' yulna? Manka lle akh il feitha? A drink? If your errands can wait?

Was it the course most likely to benefit his employment and education? Perhaps not. Was a drink with a pretty girl more appealing than that? Definitely yes. So Cal looked to Niven with a question in his gaze. Their first meeting had been a little awkward, uncomfortable at times, but there was no reason for that to be so again. He was telling himself this even as he gathered his things and made ready to leave, pausing as he realised Niven had yet to actually agree to his suggestion.

He willed her to say yes. Otherwise he would have no excuse not to get on with all that fething paperwork, and he really wasn't enjoying the company of his own thoughts right then.

The snort caught her off guard, but the reply explained all. "Ah," she said simply. Clearly, he was struggling with all the work he had to do. He had gotten behind somehow and was trying to play catch up.

The offer of a drink raised her eyebrows, but looking at the work behind him, she could understand that one might just be necessary. Sometimes you needed a break and new surroundings to help break through the work block. Fresh eyes and energy could do wonders to a person.

There was also the matter of her errands. She did have places she needed to visit, and the sooner she got it done the better. The shops wouldn't stay open forever and she was expected back at a decent candlemark for pracenda with Dante and MJ. But Niven wanted to help her kinsman in whatever capacity she could. There were few of them left and to know another was like having a rare jewel.

Calanon started gathering his things and looked at her expectantly and Niven realized that in her musings she had not replied. "Oh!" She said, a faint blush rising in her cheeks. "Uma, tanya lamya lirima."Yes, that sounds lovely.

She allowed him to lead them out of the school and to wherever he wanted to go. "Sut naa lle? Naa lle eithel?"How are you? Are you well? she asked, as they walked to their destination. "Sut naa lle moota?"How is your work?

Calanon cocked his head at the rather blank look he recieved in response to his invitation, the shadow of a smirk ghosting across as his lips as he stepped out and drew the door shut behind behind him with a click, sealing the mountains of paperwork out of sight. There was no need to lock it, for it would only open to his touch anyway. Although, useful as that might be, he wasn't convinced anything was beyond the notice of his mentor, even if he tried to hide it.

He led Niven back out into large dome that she would have passed through on her way to find him, and out into the freshness of a Spring day. A wry smile at her question as they made their way through the streets.""Amin naa eithel faarea, diola lle I am well enough, thank you"

There was the first lie. He'd told it a fair few times of late too, as his ability to mask his emotions was floundering along with the rest of him. Niven's follow up question came quick enough that he didn't worry too much about that though.

"Ha! Vee' lle elee, eller naa saie uma" Ha! As you saw, there is much to be done.

The elf really didn't seem to be overly concerned by the fact though, his disinterest was beginning to bleed through to the extent that it was only a matter of time before he would be pulled up on it. Aware of the fact, he looked over to the elfess, a lighter tone lifting his words."Ar' lle, amin arwen? lle maa eithel. And you, my lady? You look well"

He realised as he looked about him, that he had led them toward a tavern he'd been avoiding of late. His step faltered a little, before he shook it off, and opened the door for the elfess. She would like it here, just as he had.

Upon entering, Niven would notice the abundance of wood within the place. Carved and twisted to form the boles and branches to support the riot of climbing plants that made up a leafy canopy overhead. Light filtered gently though to dapple the floor in the central space, around which small alcoves were formed. It held more than a suggestion of a forest, and Calanon had loved it from the first time he had seen the place.

Now though, he hovered a moment on the threshhold, swallowing down his reluctance to revisit the place, before he followed the elfess inside."Ta naa y' tearc leuthil naa ta ila?" It is a rare gem, is it not?

The Silrosian female gave a soft chuckle and a nod. She had indeed seen. “Nan' lle ve' ta, uma?”But you like it, yes?

Shooting a bright smile at her kinsman, she agreed. "Amin naa uma eithel. I' ehtele' naa beien nostale a’ amin.” I am indeed well. The season has been kind to me.

Niven entered the tavern ahead of Calanon as he held the door for her and her breath caught in her throat as she took in the space. It was simply beautiful. Everything was reminiscent of a forest and Niven had never seen such a place indoors before. Dante and Carnasch had once arcanicly transformed their Demios home into a sort of forest for a ball many eras ago, but it was nothing like this. The greenery weaved its way up knobby wooden supports and the lighting was soft, as if the suns light was streaming in. Her eyes sparkled as they hungrily took in every detail and a wondrous smile spread across her face.

”Uma!” Yes! the elfess breathed in reply. "Amin ume il- sinta sina nae deanam!” I didn’t know this was possible! She turned to look at Calanon. "Sut ume lle utua sina yamen’? Ta naa vanima."How did you find this place? It is beautiful.

She glanced around and noted that the place wasn’t overly busy. “Detholalle.”Your choice.

Calanon's eyes slid sideways towards Niven at her question, a wry arch of a brow the rather telling answer. Who the feth would like that much paperwork?. He could see in her smile, in the flush of colour in her cheeks the truth in her claims that the season had treated her kindly. He could be glad for her, even if it had not been such for him.

Cal chewed on the inside of his cheek as they stepped into the tavern, trying very hard to get carried along by Niven's enthusiasm and not let the memories of the place dictate the tone of this visit. He managed a semblance of a smile as she turned to face him, her face no doubt mirroring the awe he had felt on first seeing the place.

"Y' mellon sane amin sinome A friend brought me here" he answered, a little abruptly, before moving off toward one of the tables hidden in the carved alcoves. Not that one. The offending table was studiously ignored as Calanon paused by it's neighbour and waited for Niven to be seated before he too slid into the booth. Fingers beat an anxious rhythm on the table top as the elf looked over Niven's shoulder to catch the eye of a serving girl, who came across and looked down at the pair with a bright smile.

"Vedui to you, my lady, my lord. What can I get for you today?"

A pause for Niven to order before Cal requested a whiskey, motioning for the girl to wait a moment before he looked back to the elfess"Caela lle matae?"Have you eaten? he enquired of Niven. He hadn't much of an appetite as of late, but he still possessed enough of his manners not to assume others were of the same mind. The food here was good, if she wanted something.

Requests made, the two were left for a moment and Calanon found himself trying to remember the details he had gleaned about the elfess opposite from their first meeting, where admittedly, they had both been a little overwhelmed. He settled on something fairly mundane, but should at least not have any either of them challenged too greatly "Sut naa Demios? How is Demios?

If she found it a little odd how her companion was acting, Niven wasn't saying anything. But just because she said nothing aloud didn't mean she didn't notice. Calanon seemed distracted, if nothing else. Following close behind him, she slipped into the booth he had chosen across from where he seemed to be planning to sit.

"Uh, red wine, please,"
the elfess said to the server. A hand raised at Calanon's question. "Amin naa tereva." I'm fine. she replied, smiling at him first and then the server, dismissing her.

Niven clasped her hands on the table and attempted to smile kindly at him, but it came off more nervous. She could sense that something was off, but she didn't know exactly what. Should she ask? Inwardly she frowned. No. Experience said Calanon didn't do well if he felt cornered. And she was not about to do anything that might make him feel cornered.

He spoke first and it was impossible to hide the relief from her face. "Demios naa quel." Damios is great It struck her that perhaps she should elaborate or she would be turning into a terrible conversationalist. "Sii' ehtele' il- hilkina tyara lote no' ndor e' alu amin yesta alaa nowe n'ala. Amin il- sinta nan' ve' ta sai- ner san' nowe." Now that Spring has come and the whole island is starting to bloom, I started that garden I was planning. I didn't realize it, but so far I really do enjoy it. She looked pleased with her situation.

Thinking quickly, Niven decided to bring up a topic she was sure that would make him smile. "Sut naa Kailin? Naa re sal' sinome ri' ume re auta n'alaquel a' port alyxandrya?" How is Kailin? Is she still here or did she go back to Port Alyxandrya?

Calanon gave the serving girl a nod as she melted away and left the two Sylrosians to it. And when Niven responded to his question, he affected some polite interest. Had she spoken before of a garden? He should have paid more attention. Really, past the initial, rather terse, exchange regarding their shared home, Cal had not taken in a great deal of the conversation that had made up their first meeting. He vowed to do better this time, and had been preparing himself to encourage Niven to expand upon talk of her garden if that were her passion, when she rather derailed him with a question of her own.

Already? He had known it was a subject that would come up, of course, but had hoped he might at least have a drink in front of him by the time it did. But no, Kailin's name had already landed with a heavy thunk in the conversation, causing an even heavier thunk as his stomach sank to his boots. A deep frown then, and a sudden fascination with the wood grain on the table as Cal bit the bullet and answered.

"Uh...re hyarya.ar' ta naa n'uma ner y' dela en' amin sut re naa She left. And it is no longer a worry of mine how she is"

He wished it was true. If he could just not think about her anymore then life would be much easier, but instead he found himself vacillating between anger, and some yearning for the sense of relief that he felt should be present, and the sickening feeling that he'd made yet another terrible mistake to add to its long list of predecessors. The gaze that rested briefly upon Niven spoke of both of these emotions for a second, before he looked away to greet the returning waitress, a rather less easily interpreted expression on his face.

"Diola lle" Thank you He meant it then, as much for the timely interruption as for the glass of whiskey that was soon nestled between his hands. The elf didn't take a drink, though he did seem lost for a moment as he stared into amber liquid that was not really enough to touch the confusion of emotions that he hoped to stifle. Niven would see him visibly pull himself together then, before he looked back to her and gave a shrug.

"Ta il- ve' ta nae oio y' anwa estela" Its not like it was ever a real possibility anyway he said dismissively." Edainme ar' edhel" Human and Elf A snort of derision " A nae ere' oio y' ai seasa It was only ever a little pleasure".

Half of the whiskey gone to convince himself of that truth, even as he felt the sting of the words rub salt into his own wounds.

"Nan' mani en' lle? lle fiance? But what of you? Your Fiance?"

No sooner had the words left her lips did Niven realize it was the wrong thing to say. Cal's face said more than his words, but there was much in those as well. A rosy hue burned on her cheeks. Her eyes went straight to the table.

"Amin naa hiraetha,"I am sorry Niven offered, carefully, her eyes lifting to meet his again. Whether she meant about their breakup or the fact that she brought up such a sore subject was up to Calanon to decide. It was likely both, though. There was nothing else for her to say. She'd said more than enough already.

He was in pain. He tried to hide it, but she saw it in his eyes. It was plain that as much as he wished he didn't care, he did. Niven could almost see the ache he felt. They had seemed so comfortable with each other when she'd last seen them. Calanon had drawn strength from his human companion. Kailin was a soothing balm to his tormented soul. Niven knew what that felt like. Dante was that for her. Navigating the torrent of emotions that the fog had brought, nevermind the natural upheaval life brought anyway, would feel so impossible without him. Niven was almost certain that she would not have survived without Dante as her anchor. Watching her kinsman try and weather the storm without his.... The elf's eyes shut for a moment. She couldn't imagine.

Clenched hands hid on her lap. She wanted to reach across the table, offer him a gesture of comfort, remind him that he was not alone. But she didn't want to make another faux pas. Her last had been bad enough.

He seemed truly grateful for the waitresses return with their drinks. The distraction from painful memories and emotions was obviously welcome. Niven ignored hers and watched silently as he considered the drink for a moment before pulling himself together and meeting her eyes again.

A look of sympathy met his words. "Calanon," she started, but she paused. Was it her place to say anything? She didn't know him that well. And her experience taught her that he would lash out if he felt cornered. Was it worth the risk. He downed half his drink and Niven gathered her courage. "Lle uma il- caela nowa ikotane ai en' somethien tanya nae alta a' lle. Ta naa quel a' tyava wanwa. Eller naa beleg e' tanya vithel." You don't have to downplay something that meant a lot to you. It is ok to feel loss. There is strength in that too.Niven offered a sympathetic smile.

Trying to force herself to relax, Niven took a sip of her wine and sat back in her seat. "Lye naa eithel. Weddien nowe naa goien vee' eithel vee' ta'aya. Ta naa never y' ujere talala." We are well. Wedding planning is going as well as it can. It is never smooth sailing. A wry smile twisted on her lips.

The elf relished the burn of the whiskey as it went down, a distraction from the rather empty sort of feeling he had become accustomed to during the past few cycles. He'd glanced at Niven as she spoke his name, but when nothing further came, Cal had felt compelled to chase down the bitter taste of the untruths he'd spoken. It was lucky that he had already swallowed the liquor when she did speak, for he might have spat it across the table as the elfess who barely knew him saw through his lies so easily.

She was right, in that Calanon's initial urge was to snap at her, discount her words. He opened his mouth to do just that. But something in what she'd said, the words she had chosen gave him pause for thought.
It is ok to feel loss. Hadn't that been half the problem? He hadn't felt it as keenly as Kailin had, hadn't dared let himself feel anything as much as he should have done. And look where it had left him.

Surprised by Niven's unexpected insight, he simply stared back at her for a few moments, before giving a short nod of acknowledgement.

"lle elea imya amin. Kailin ume vee' eithel. You see through me. Kailin did as well"

She had seen too much she didn't like in that last argument. Cal sighed dejectedly and rubbed a hand over his brow, trying to smooth away the tension there. It had taken him off-guard, quite how much her leaving had affected him, and how long the feelings seemed to be lingering for. He half considered asking the Elfess opposite if it was normal, but he snorted at himself even as he thought it. He was 296 eras old for gods sake. He needed to get a grip.

So when Niven responded to his question, it was a welcome change of focus, and he found himself sddenly keen to hear all about her wedding plans. Not something he'd ever considered being a subject of interest, but needs must.

"Uma amin tanaka eller naa nir' ai lle caela nowa no" Yes, I am sure there are many small details you have to think on

At the look on Calanon's face in response to her words, the elf braced herself for the attack she was sure was coming. As his eyes bored into her, she started to get a little nervous. She had not intended to upset him, only to offer him comfort. That had not exactly worked out in her favour last time.

He surprised her, though. Niven visibly relaxed as instead of countering her, he accepted her words. She offered him a small smile. "lle late amin, heruamin, nan' amin quena ere' tuulo' marta. Amin utue i' ere' men bel- imya awra naa a' let lle tyava ta." You flatter me, my lord, but I speak only from experience. I have found the only way to truly move past hurt is to allow yourself to feel it.

Cocking her head, Niven looked at her kinsman with great sympathy as he seemed to be struggling to come to terms with his break up. It seemed to be causing him great pain, a pain she couldn't admit to knowing personally. She'd not opened her own heart to any man before Dante. To lose a love like Calanon and Kailin's was foreign to her. But she knew how much it hurt to lose family and she could imagine it was something similar.

He seemed pleased at the change in topic and the elfess was more than happy to cheer him up however she could, though it was a little puzzling to her that he would find comfort in a relationship that was succeeding. Letting out a short laugh, she nodded. "Ner than amin wouaya caela nowe deanam. I' coiasira amin nowa amin caela ta ilya tela, eller naa y' winya nat' now- no'." More than I'd thought possible! The moment I think I have it all done, there is something else to consider.

Cal noted the way in which Niven relaxed as he acknowledged the truth in her statement, and he realised with some dismay that she had been expecting him to respond less favourably. What a wonderful impression he must have made on her earlier in the year. The small smile she offered was met with a weak attempt at one from the male elf which flickered and dimmed at her next words.

He got an odd sense of déjà vu, harking back to Kailin telling him the exact same thing. Feeling stuff was apparently something he was a little out of practice with, and it kept coming round to trip him up again and again. He’d had his fingers burnt, badly, and it had become second nature to avoid opening himself up to the dizzying power that emotion could have. Or had been, up until earlier in the era when the cracks had started to show. And then Kailin had come along and her kindness, her light , had stolen into those crevices and deepened them still.

Now the elf was all at sea, not knowing how to move forward, not sure he was able to go back to the stone walling he had relied upon before. He met Niven’s concerned gaze, not entirely comfortable with the sympathy he saw there, though he knew it was well meant. He sighed then, and gave a small shrug “Amin tanaka amin isa coia” I am sure I will live.
Aware that he was not being the best company, Calanon did his best to shake it off, and listened as Niven spoke of her wedding plans. Not really his area of expertise, he nodded at her words.

“Amin uma il- envy lle I do not envy you A shake of his head then. “nan' amin weera mainkaya lle, manka lle nae um- amin moota” But I would be willing to trade you, if you were willing to do my work

He was quite certain choosing flowers or the suchlike would be easier and preferable to the depressing volumes of paper work that would still be waiting for him. Perhaps burning it was the best idea after all?

Niven made a soft grunt of agreement. "Uma, nan' sut rato lle entula coi- naa detholalle." Indeed, but how soon you return to life is of your choosing.

The elf truly hoped that her kinsman would find healing and happiness again. She would be there for him if he needed someone to talk to, but she didn't think he would ask and she was sure he would feel uncomfortable if she were to offer. In the past half-candle mark she'd built a rapport and she wasn't about to jeopardize that. There was a very real chance at this moment that they could actually be friends.

The offer of an exchange of duties made a silvery peal of laughter escape from the female Silrosian. "Amin dura lle aya uma amin moota, nan' amin uma il- dura amin -aya uma lle," I have no doubt you could do my job, but I doubt that I could do yours! she laughed. She chuckled again and took a sip of her wine. The amount of work that was left in his office when they left looked quite overwhelming. Niven was sure if she was required to deal with that much parchment, she'd require a drink too!

"Mankoi naa eller ikotane sai- parchment e' lle yamen'? Uma lle n'at istima?" Why is there so much parchment in your office? Do you not teach? she inquired.
