[Jaedaxia] Dreaming Wide Awake

Winter Era XXIV PF

There was a reason that gardens had been outlawed between Kailin and Calanon, and a danger that lurked behind every frozen branch. Emotions. History. Pasts that reached out to snag the unwary. And was there anything less wary than new lovers?

But on this brightening there would only be laughter, because they were merely walking the perimeter of the Parc Felix, the four square block - small by Jaedaxian standards - park at the north end of the bohemian section of Jaedaxia that Kailin had chosen to make her home when she was in the city. In the spring and summer, one could almost always find musicians and buskers around the fountain that decorated the center of the park, with it's magnificently depicted pegasus.

But now with snow thick on the ground, it was quieter, if not even close to deserted. Having lagged a bit behind Calanon, Kailin had made a pretense of studying the fountain from 'this angle', and bent down to pick up a couple handfuls of snow, which she packed together tightly.

Then, timing it just right, she attacked. If her aim flew true, the small white projectile would strike the elf smack in the center of the back of his head. That was where one had to aim, Kailin knew, if they wanted the snow to fall into the collar after impact, thereby effecting maximum damage on one's adversary.

She was chuckling even as she released the snowball, an evil sound, perhaps, yet so full of joy.

The elf had been quite innocently meandering on ahead, he was becoming accustomed to Kailin's moments of artistic distraction. So he continued, boots crunching in the perfect powder underfoot, eyes bright from the winter freshness. Or was that bitter cold. He was undecided.

He supposed it could really be classed as either if....

thunk

Something smacked him in the back of the head, the icy crystals that fell down his collar and melted down his back giving Calanon a fair idea of what it had been. He spun to face the direction from which the snowball had come, knowing already how pleased someone was going to be feeling with themselves at that moment.

A combined look of surprise and annoyance quickly gave way to a grin as he witnessed just how hilarious Kailin thought she was.

" You are entirely without honour, lirimaer" he scolded. "Attacking an unarmed elf from the rear!"

He did not remain unarmed for long though, bending to scoop up a handful of the white stuff, deftly pressing it into a sphere and curling it back through the air toward the woman. Another was rapidly formed and he narrowed his gaze at her, throwing the snowball lightly from hand to hand.

" Do you know what you've started?"

With that he launched his second assault, realising a moment too late that he had perhaps employed a little too much force and that this snowball was going to fly far beyond Kailin.

He couldn't watch.

The crisp winter air was heavenly. Niven inhaled deeply through her nose and exhaled slowly through her mouth, her breath curling like smoke in the frosty air. Her green eyes shone as she took in the Parc Felix. The area seemed so clean and new with the glistening blanket of snow from the darkening previous. She’d not always had fond memories of Jaedaxia covered in snow, but today she was determined to create new happier ones as she wandered the city alone, her fiancé and daughter hard at work at the docks.

Rose petal pink lips curved into a smile that would warm even the chilliest of countenances as the Slirosian watched the people around her enjoying the freshly fallen powder on the cobblestone quadrate area. She watched as two children worked as a team to build a man of snow, how they rolled his head and struggled to place it atop the other two spheres.

A chilly breeze blew through Niven’s heavy wool cloak and the Silrosian hugged it a little closer to herself, bowing her head so her hood covered her face that little bit more. She had just changed direction and was turning to see her path when suddenly she felt a cold orb of icy snow strike her square in the face. A mixture of the shock and momentum of the snowball knocked the elf onto her bottom, her hood falling back to reveal her corn silk blonde hair.

Hey!” she said, surprise taking over all other emotions. She looked around for who had thrown the snowball and find out what on Telath had she done to provoke such an attack.

Triumph was alive in her eyes as Kailin watched her aim fly true, and her shout of glee was already bounding across the expanse of white when Calanon turned to face her. Even through the childish joy that this little game of hers brought, she felt the leap her heart took at the grin that transformed his features.

Struck anew by the beauty of him, unguarded as he was in that moment, she nearly ate a faceful of snow, only dodging the neatly packed ball at the last moment. Pesky elves and their distractingly inhuman beauty!

The edge on her grin only deepened at his scolding, and she bent to arm herself, scooping more snow and compressing it into a few balls of middling size, "We poor mortals must use whatever advantage we can find, AstalderValiant One."

Then she laughed again at his challenge, and her grin was nearly a baring of her teeth as she stood again, well armed, "Amin sinta mani amin teluva. Caela ie'lle!I know what I will finish. Have at thee!" And with that battle cry no doubt ringing in his bat-like ears, Kailin loosed another snowball in his direction even as he let fly with his second attack.

Which Kailin was content to ignore as he had obviously been greatly - and understandably - affected by her prowess and overthrew his own attack. She took the opportunity to throw another of her own projectiles at him then, knowing better than to show mercy.

She felt victory in her hands (also she felt the biting chill as she worked with the snow, even through her gloves, but she was a warrior and could ignore such things with ease) right up until she heard the unmistakable sound of the snowball striking flesh behind her. It was followed shortly by the muffled thump of flesh hitting snow. And that was followed almost immediately by the cry of an innocent bystander.

Cringing at this most obvious casualty of war, Kailin met Calanon's eyes with a look that every child ever had worn at some point in their life. A mixture of dismay and impending amusement, the war to keep the dismay at the forefront was now, as it always had been since the dawn of time, a losing battle.

Spinning, she saw the figure that was seated in the snow at least a good five paces behind her, and approached cautiously, grimacing at the snow that was melting and beginning to drip from the elf's features. Too distracted to look very closely yet, she let her remaining weapon drop to the ground at her feet as she made her way close enough to offer a hand to the female.

"Amin hiraetha, arwen en amin. Mellonamin uma il- sinta sut beleg ro naaI am sorry, my Lady. My friend doesn't know his own strength.," the words, accompanied by a small grin, fell from her lips before she stopped to think about them, a sure sign that her comfort with the language was returning with her close acquaintance with Calanon. She tried not to laugh down into the face of the stranger who'd taken the snowball meant for her, but her lips quirked before she pressed them together as she waited for her offer of assistance to be accepted.

Calanon had been following the trajectory of his second snowball with a look of dismay, and as such, Kailin’s follow up caught him rather smartly on the shoulder, exploding upon impact to shower him with yet more icy wetness.

He would never hear the end of this.

More troubling even that the smugness that his lover was sure to be basking in though, was the soft thud and yelp of surprise from the unwitting third participant in their little snowball fight as she caught the projectile full in the face.

Feth

The elf realised retrospectively that he could have perhaps called out a warning or something, but seeing the event unfold in his mind before it occurred had frozen his tongue, and so he could do naught but grimace as Kailin glanced at him, her own face caught between mirth and concern. He watched as she turned and approached the now floored woman, breaking into a jog himself to close the distance back to the two females. Brushing the incriminating snow from his gloved hands, the elf reached them just in time to hear Kailin’s explanation, shooting her a withering look before turning to offer his own apology to his kinswoman.

“My apologies, Arwen en amin Amin rant nae quel nan’sul caela atsae ta My aim was true but the wind must have caught it. The Sylrosian glanced about them as if hoping for some demonstrable weather to support his claim. He found non, the trees remaining as still and quiet in their winter slumber as they had been all brightening. That was unfortunate .

With a slightly sheepish expression then, he too offered a hand to assist his victim back to her feet.

Wiping the melting snow off her face, Niven looked up as Kailin approached. When she spoke in her native tongue and extended her hand, Niven smiled in return, but a chord was struck somewhere in the recesses of her mind. Something about the voice of woman before her struck her as familiar. Her brow furrowed in confusion for no more than half a second as she tried to place her, but the more she looked, the more Silrosian was sure she’d never met her before. It also struck her that a clearly non-elf was speaking in elvish, and quite well, too, with only a slight hint of an accent.

An elf she did recognize, however, came up beside the handsome woman and also made his apologies, distracting Niven from her thoughts. The she-elf’s eyebrows raised in surprise, her green eyes betraying widening. “Calanon of Siluvanade?” she thought, amazed that she would ever cross paths with a member of one of the great houses.

He called her arwen en amin, my lady, but Niven knew between the two of them, it was him who should have a title. Though he was infamous for his scandalous behaviour, and had been the subject of gossip in her home hamlet for quite some time, Niven thought it not in good taste to bring any of that up. Sometimes people make mistakes and it was in her nature to think the better of people.

Placing one of each of her hands in the ones they had outstretched, she allowed them to help her rise to her feet. She smiled at them both, realizing that the merrymaking had been between the two and she’d been only included by accident. “N'dela no'ta,Don't worry about it” she laughed in as she used her cloak to wipe the moisture off her face. “ Eller naa hae- ner thaur san' beien pelekta yassen losa There are far worse things than being struck with snow.”

Kailin looked over as Calanon arrived to help the fallen elf just as she finished speaking her apology on his behalf, and thus missed the confusion that passed across the stranger's face. The look he shot her only widened the grin that stood on her lips, and she closed one eye in a rather jaunty wink before turning her attention back to the female before them.

They were lifting her to her feet when Kailin finally got her own good look at the blond's features, and she found herself sliding sideways into a moment that had nothing to do with the reality of the world about them. She knew this elf, had even sketched the face before her, but... Kailin could make no sense of it.

Suddenly chilled in a way that had nothing to do with the snowball fight or the winter weather, she pulled her hand back and wrapped her arms tightly about her center. So focused on trying to place her from anywhere other than where her mind told her she knew the elf from, Kailin missed the words coming from Niven's mouth entirely.

"What's your name," the words were abrupt, a demand more than a question and nearly rude as they left Kailin. She knew that she didn't sound in the least like herself. Her gaze was stuck as if frozen to the features before her, as she tried to understand how this figure from her dreams could be standing in front of her now.

Because, whatever 'gifts' she might have with regard to visions, Kailin had never had a dream come to life before her. Her fear and discomfort, therefore, likely had more to do with the possibility of her gift changing than simply recognizing a face she'd drawn. It was hard enough, seeing what she did, stealing what she did, without those visions plaguing her dreams as well.

It wasn't until the woman spoke that Calanon's interest shifted from polite concern to something more. For the gentle lilting cadence of her accent marked her unmistakably as of the elfhame. The suggestion of a frown settled between dark brows as the elf tried to decide how he felt about this development.

It was true that Kailin has successfully drawn him out of his reticence to talk of his past, his home, and that each time they pressed further it became a little easier. But being faced with a living, walking ,breathing embodiment of his past life was an entirely different matter, and Cal was not sure he was ready for it. But just as he had pinned the blonde elfess through her voice alone, he was sure she would have been able to draw the same conclusions of him.

He had tilted his head to the side a little, scrutinising the woman's face to see if he could place her features, when Kailin's voice broke into his thoughts, sharp and demanding. Calanon looked up at his lover, a hint of reproach in his gaze, a gaze that shifted to confusion and flickered between the two females as he tried to ascertain what had caused the sudden shift in Kailin's demeanour. For where she had been smiles and good humour, her face was now set and still, her arms wrapped around herself, not quite hostile but certainly not the warm and open woman that he knew.

Wanting to soften the harsh enquiry that hung in the air, the elf cleared his throat, smiling hesitantly at the blonde, eyes cutting back to Kailin questioningly as he set aside his own reservations to try and warm the somehow chilly atmosphere that had descended.

" Amin hiraetha, amin essa naa Calanon, sina naa Kailin." I'm sorry, my name is Calanon, this is Kailin

He paused then, giving the blonde a chance to introduce herself, whilst studying his lover intently to see exactly what had changed to make this meet and greet seem so loaded all of a sudden.

As Niven’s cloak fell from her hands, her face now dry with only a slight redness marking the alabaster skin on her nose and cheeks from the frosty projectile, Kailin’s unsettled look. The smile faded from her lips and her own features took on a look of confusion mixed with concern.

The entire tone of the conversation shifted as Kailin’s body language altered to that of someone uneasy and skeptical, and she demanded her name. Niven couldn’t help feeling a little affronted. Did the woman before her not realize that she had done nothing to warrant such a tone, especially as she had been nothing but forgiving when she had become a casualty of their game?

Her companion seemed to feel the same way, and gave her a look before offering their names. Niven’s head turned sharply to look at him. Calanon had confirmed what she already knew about him, but it was the woman’s name caught her attention.

Kailin?” she asked turning back to the woman who was hugging herself. “Tanya naa il- deanam...That's not possible” Dismay mixed disbelief flooded her. Her mind raced as she tried desperately to assimilate this information. “No, Kailin wasn’t real. She was a figment of a dream. A dream I had many era’s ago. This is.... this is....” Niven couldn’t even complete her thoughts. Could this really be?

Amin naa NivenI am Niven,” she said, slowly, watching the young woman closely for any indication that she might be experiencing the same thing the Silrosian was. If this was the case, her change in attitude towards here would make perfect sense.

Kailin processed the words that the two around her were speaking, but her gaze never left Niven's face. And so she did not miss the reaction that her own name garnered, coming just before the woman turned back to her and said that it wasn't possible.

At that, Kailin gave a sharp nod, as if that had settled it for her. The name that followed was no surprise then, though Kailin had no more explanation for how such a thing might be possible than Niven did. It was a small comfort that she was not alone in her confusion.

Still, whatever tension there had been in her features drained away as quickly as it had come, and she let her gaze travel over the woman, her skin alight with the sort of chills that could only come from something otherworldly and strange. Finally, a soft smile warmed her features, curiosity blooming inside her at the wonder of this meeting.

"Ta naa deanam, arwenaminIt is possible, my Lady," her lips curled further upward, and she shook her head slightly, finally sparing a glance for Calanon, who was no doubt confused by their exchange, "or so it seems."

"Niven..." she tasted the name, and found it familiar, ""A shared dream, then? It seems the only explanation..." Head tilting to the side, she reached out to take Calanon's hand in her own, not yet knowing how to even begin to explain what was happening. She gave him a smile and the smallest of shrugs, before turning back to Niven.

Then her free hand passed over her own face suddenly, as she remembered that she had been young, much younger in the dream, "I suppose I must not look familiar to you, not as you do to me. You must have an exceptional memory, to remember my name. It has been eras..." then she caught herself, and her smile widened, for a few eras was nothing to the elf, of course.

Calanon was thoroughly confused. Kailin’s cool reaction, then the blonde elf’s sharp look as he had made the rudimentary introductions. He suddenly felt as if he had stumbled into the middle of something, though he had no rational idea what. That they both seemed caught off guard by the other was clear, but as to why? Eyebrows raised, green eyes flickered between the two women as he silently observed their exchange, making no attempt to mask his bemusement as Kailin eventually looked back at him.

A shared dream? Was she saying they had met before…in a dream?

His face betrayed his disbelief, but there was little he could add as he felt Kailin’s gloved hand slip into his own. He gave it a little squeeze in an attempt to reassure, but if what his lover had said was true then it was far outside the realms of his own experience, and left him as uncertain as her. He had heard there were those who could walk in the dreamworld, but that was as far as his knowledge went.

That there was a story to be told here was woefully apparent, and he for one was suddenlly feeling the bite of the cold, no thanks to the uncanny aim of the woman he stood next to. Taking a brief silence as his opportunity, he threw a small smile out to both parties.

“Perhaps….. a drink and a spot by a fire and you two can let me into the loop on whatever this is?” His free hand gestured between the two of them, a question in the gaze that alighted on them both.

As Kailin’s features melted into a warm smile, Niven’s did too. “Indeed,” she affirmed the woman's thoughts, as they mirrored her own. She gave a nod, her eyes closing momentarily, still smiling.

A dream! Yes!” Kailin confirmed everything she had been thinking. “How on Telath this is such a possibility....” Wonder at this revelation was evident in the she elf’s green eyes. To meet one from a dream was unfathomable. The dream itself had felt so very real and to have it come to life again in the waking world was incredible.

Niven gave Kailin an amused smile. “It was the sound of your voice I found familiar, not your face,” she admitted. “But as I look closer...” The elf took a step closer to the woman and peered closely at her, taking in her eyes and her features. “...I can see something familiar in your look. You are a handsome woman, just as you were as a young girl,” she said, straightening up again.

The Silrosian turned to her kinsman, having almost forgotten all about him. “A drink.” She agreed, her smile extending to Calanon. “That sounds wonderful. I could use some warming up after my snow bath.

The disbelief was as plain on Calanon's features as she felt within herself, however much she could not deny the proof before her eyes. Of course, she mused, this could also be a dream, which would go some way toward explaining how what couldn't be happening, was in fact happening.

Kailin half waited for the scene around her to shift and slide into something else, now that she'd recognized the possibility that she might not be awake, but this didn't feel like a dream. The air was crisp and biting, and her lover's hand was firm around hers as he squeezed it once for, she thought, reassurance.

She was happy to see the warmth that suffused Niven's features, for the dream they had shared - shared! - had undeniably been one of her strangest. At her question of how it was possible, Kailin spread one gloved, snow-crusted hand to the side, "I have no idea. I've never experienced anything like it before."

That the elf had recognized her voice was even more strange to Kailin, whose own focus was so strongly on the visual world that she wouldn't even have thought to recognize the sound of a person's voice. Standing still as the female approached, she watched as she was given a close inspection, and couldn't help smiling broadly as Niven called her handsome. Indeed, her eyes had likely not changed since that dream, and she knew that they were one of her more distinctive features because of their strange mix of colors.

"Thank you, Niven. And you are as beautiful as I remembered..." Thinking of the sketches she had done of the blond, Kailin was relieved and disturbed in turns to realize that her memory of the elf had been every bit as clear as if she'd known her in the waking world.

Kailin had a hard time looking away from Niven's face, now that it was closer and thus even easier to trace, but she finally turned to acknowledge the sense in Calanon's suggestion with a nod. She could, after all, stare at the female to her heart's content inside where it was warm, with a much-needed drink in her hand.

Niven's rejoinder about her snow bath brought a soft snort from Kailin, and she grinned as she turned to loop her free arm around the other lady's own, while still not letting go of Calanon's hand. "Indeed, a fire and a drink would be most welcome. Plus, with such strange winds blowing about this brightening, perhaps we had better seek cover before another snowball is blown so wildly off course." Her gaze twinkled first down to Niven, and then up at Calanon, repressed laughter lacing her tone as she squeezed his hand.

So close to Le Rue Felix, it was not hard to find their way to a tavern that had a few cozily blazing fires, and it was early enough that those who frequented the many varied establishments had yet to descend from the university, so it was relatively quiet, too.

Kailin released Niven's arm to allow the elf to precede her through the doorway, then followed through keeping a hold on her lover's hand. It wasn't that she was freaking out so much that she needed the reassurance... no, actually. It was exactly that, as her mind spun into and through the many strange details of the dream that she could remember.

Of the three fireplaces, only one was taken up by a couple warming themselves, so Kailin moved toward one of the other two that sported both a small couch and a comfortable chair, angled toward each other to allow for ease in conversation. She took a seat on the couch on the side closest to where Niven would be in the chair, and leaned toward her, questions on her tongue, before she realized that Calanon must be even more confused than either of the two females.

Turning to him, she opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again, and was saved from trying to explain by the barmaid who appeared suddenly to ask what they might wish to drink.

"Brandy, a double, please," was Kailin's immediate response.

Calanon had waited patiently as the two women stared at eachother a little longer before either of them acknowledged the fact that he had actually spoken. Well that did wonders for the ego. He almost put his hands together to thank the Gods when both seemed to agree to move their little stare off somewhere warmer, but couldn't as Kailin had hold of one of them now.

He took her ribbing regarding his poor aim in good spirits though, shooting an apologetic look toward Niven Where was the fething wind when you wanted it? He should have been an elementalist. At least the blonde appeared to have taken the face full of snow without affront, there were plenty who wouldn't have done, he was sure.

He let Kailin lead them on to one of the small taverns that dotted the area, pausing to let both women enter ahead of him, the shift in the cold air outside and the wall of warmth they stepped into bringing colour into his cheeks and a tingle into the tips of his fingers as he pulled off sodden leather gloves.

The elf didn't sit right away, rather stood and looked between Kailin and Niven in some amusement as they were both so obviously keen to continue their odd conversation from outside. He was rather glad when a barmaid came over and, for a few moments at least, relieved him from the awkward third wheel role.

Dark eyebrows shot up as Kailin asked for a double brandy, and Calanon glanced at her quizzically. At some point he was looking forward to hearing the explanation for all of this, but for now he looked to Niven to place her order, and asked for an ale for himself, before handing over the crowns to the barmaid. He watched her go a little forlornly before he folded down next to Kailin on the sofa.

" So" he asked brightly, loudly. " How do you two know each other?"

Kailin’s compliment elicited a grin from the elf. “Thank-you,” she replied. While Niven was not into looks, feeling that who a person was was far more important than what they looked like, this being illustrated by the fact that she had fallen in love with a scarred dracon in his scarred dracon form, she was also not oblivious to the fact that she was, herself, quite attractive. Her fiancé also never hesitated to tell her how beautiful she was, but then he was also more than a little biased.

The elf’s smile widened as Kailin looped her arm through hers and she let out a silvery laugh at Kailin’s jab at Calanon. “Yes, it’s a frightening thought,” she teased as she smiled at the fellow Silrosian. He had fooled no one with his claim of a rogue wind altering the trajectory of his snowball.

The warmth of the tavern was a welcome change from the biting cold outside and as she passed through the threshold ahead of her companions the sweet smell of a burning hearth mixed with spirits reached her nostrils. There was little more comforting on a cold brightening than the crackle of a warm fire. Kailin led the group to a quieter seating area near one of the roaring fires warming the room and took a seat on the couch. Niven immediately took the singular armchair, allowing the couple to sit together, marking her choice by removing her woollen cloak and laying it on the back of her seat before she sat down and started to remove her brown leather gloves and laying them neatly on her lap.

Kailin ordered first for herself from the barmaid who arrived to take their orders, and Niven ordered herself a hot buttered rum. She moved to reach for her own change purse when Calanon ordered what he wanted and paid for all their drinks. “Thank you,” she said as he took his seat, her gratitude plain on her face.

It’s kinda a funny story,” Niven began in response to the question put to them both. “It would seem that eras ago, we shared a rather vivid dream which had us cellmates with six others. I can only assume, now, that they too all were real.” she said, turning her attention from Calanon to Kailin. “It does relieve me to know that as each of met our demise, it was not permanent, though how some met their end within the dream was more interesting than others. I’m relieved to know that your melting into nothing more than a crimson puddle was only a part of the dream and not reality. My own end was quite unpleasant.

Niven thought back to the jaws of paper that swallowed her face before consuming the rest of her body. The elven woman had awoken in her bed after her dream death drenched in a cold sweat, feeling a mix of dismay at the betrayal and relief that the pain in her head was no more. “It seems that we should have trusted our immediate gut feelings to distrust the Trelorian, Etienne,” she mused, half to herself and half to Kailin. “Did you know he managed to turn himself into a woman in the end? It was quite strange.... " Niven's eyes glazed over for a few moments as she mentally relived the change of the blue elf.

Returning to the present, Niven focused on Kailin's face again. "Tirion turned out to be no friend of ours either. Real or not, the dream taught me many valuable lessons. Never again will I be so quick to trust a child, nor immediately assume their innocence."
