[Medonia] Into the Woods

Cryxatum Era XXIV

Isabelle arrived in Medonia at the turn of the era. She was taken care by her cousin, Christoph Down and she was arranged to live with her mother in an old house. The house used to be owned by one of their ancestors.

Her human cousin, son of her mother’s brother, had told her that he had took over the family business after the invasion and wanted to induct her in. The problem they faced was the same as always. A mer had no reason to frequent town. All her ancestors in Medonia had certain skills, always in the line of crafts and trading. Individual craftsman and traders were not prominent, unlike nobleman and these trades allowed them to disappear whenever they wished.

It was to follow this tradition that Christoph started looking out for people to train her. She waited for nearly two months without news when Christoph appeared to inform that she would begin her learning as a woodcrafter. It was not the best kind of ability to learn for her, since most of her things would be underwater half the time, but she might learn ways to prevent wood from rotting too quickly underwater.

On the appointed brightening, an elf came knocking on the door on Isabelle’s house. When the mer opened the door, she saw an youthful looking elf in plain forest green work clothes and several tools hanging on his belt. He wore a look of impatience, which quickly turned into surprise.

”Isabelle Sophie?” The elf asked in a tentative tone. He had not expected the cousin of his employer, Mr Down, to be a mer.

The moment Isabelle confirmed her identity, he quickly bowed and introduced himself. ”My name is Juran. I believe your cousin had told you to expect my arrival? I can see why he needed me to work near water. I am sure Mr Down have told you how you would pay for me teaching you?”

He did not wait for her to reply and continued. ”I will teach you the basics and in return, you will work alternate brightening for me in this month and a small fee.” The fee he proposed was an almost negligible amount, a token amount no more than the cost of three meals.

“Yes I am Isabelle Sophie.” Isabelle acknowledged.

“Serale Juran. No have not heard about the payment required, but the amount you say is good. Give me a moment to gather my things and we can go.” She said.

She returned back into the house and took a big bottle of sea water, to wet her skin when needed and to drink. She also brought along some dried fishes for food later.

“I am ready. Let us go.” She informed.

As they walked, Juran began the theoretical lessons. ”A carpenter means different things to people. The most basic of carpenters is the joiner. Their job is the preparation, setting out and manufacture of joinery components for furnitures and other smaller objects, as well as fabrication of timber elements for construction. Like it’s name, a joiner also builds things by joining pieces of wood together. Although many specialises in one aspect of wood crafting in the later part of their lives, like ship builder or cupboard maker, everyone starts with joining. I will be training you on this aspect.”

”I’m not too sure how well you would know about wood, but I’m sure you'll have heard about not using green wood, that is, freshly cut wood if possible. Wood should be seasoned. I won’t be teaching you how to season wood as you can easily purchase them at stores around the city, but if you like to know, the easiest, but slowest method is air drying.” He stopped in front of a building and looked at his new apprentice. ”Right we are here. Before we go in, how does everything sound? Any question so far?”

Isabelle thought for a while and shook her head. “Everything sounds good. I have no questions Juran.” She replied.

She was eager to begin and hopefully the theory part was over.

Juran opened the door to the place. It was a large area with all the tools for carpentry, several tables and a small stack of wood in various sizes.

”First off, if you need to cool off, just sound off. You can go through the back door to take a dip or wet yourself. The sea is just behind this workshop.” Juran informed the Mer.

”On to training then. I am a specialised in furniture making, although I supply a lot of joining components to carpenters in town. I have an order to supply beams for a new house and your cousin requested for a new cabinet. Let us start with the simply task of creating the beams.” He went over to one of the tables and picked up an order invoice. He handed it to Isabelle.

Quote:
Order Invoice

80 : 2x10 Planks
”Now this is a basic request. A plank is usually about 2.5 inches thick, so most people just request the length and width in foot. So, take this pencil, go to that pile of wood and start marking out.” He said handing Isabelle a pencil and a long measuring tape.

The stack of wood were not prepared in any ways. They varied in length, width, thickness and most were rounded. Juran stood to one side to watch his student work.

Isabelle thanked Juran for letting her know the sea was nearby, but she was not going to dip into the waters. The changing back was a long process. She will just splash some water on her skin if needed.

“So I am to mark out planks that are 2 foot wide, 10 foot long and 1.5 inches thick? I can do that.” She proclaimed and took the pencil and the measuring tap.

She pulled one down, if it was too heavy, asked Juran for help. She measured two foot and marked them out. Next she measured ten foot length, starting with one of the first marker and marked the end out. After that, another marked for the two foot. Next she measured 2.5 inches and marked 4 corners. That would be how the plank would look like at the end.

Isabelle turned to Juran for approval. If all was good, she continued marking out the rest.

Taking the measuring tape over, Juran measured again and nodded with approval. ”A little off on your marking. The two length are not parallel to one another.”

”The problem is, most wood are roughly sawn then dried. As you can see.” He poked the piece of straight looking wood and it actually rocked slightly on the table. ”As you can see the wood is warp by the drying process.”

He took the wood and clamped it tightly on the table with a wooden clamp. Then he took out two saws. ”Clamping it with keep the wood in place, so you only need to think about cutting. Right, this is a thwart saw for cutting across the grain of the wood. And this is a rip saw for rip cutting, or a cut made parallel to the direction of the wood grain” He handed the saws as he introduced them.

Taking a pencil, he drew a line across the width. He took the thwart saw and pushed gently, but firmly across the wood, took it out and repeated. ”Alright, draw the line on the other side and cut just slightly outside the secondary line. The saw only cut when pushing, so don’t pull it back. It won’t work and might spoil both the wood and the saw. Take your time. As my master once said, more haste, less speed.”

”Word of advice, Isabelle. Next time, draw the lines instead of just marking them out. It safe time. Well, on you go. Use the thwart saw to cut out the width, then the rip saw to cut the length.”

Isabelle cursed herself for not thinking ahead. A line to guide where she had to cut was better than just a line.

Taking the two saws, she looked at them to look for identifying marked. The saws looked different and she quickly identified them. She placed the rip saw down and began her work with the thwart saw, placing the saw firming on the wood and pushing it forward, cutting just out of the line. Done, she did the same thing on the other side to cut the width out.

Then with the rip saw, she cut the length out.

Juran was glad to see Isabelle working well, only needed to guide her a little. After finishing the first plank, he took out two planes. One was large, the other small. ”Both are planes. They are used to flatten, reduce the thickness of, and impart a smooth surface to a rough piece of lumber or timber. That is what we must do here, reduce the thickness and smoothing out the plank.”

He went on to show her how to use a plane. Gripping the handle tightly, he pushed the smaller plane down the wood, along the grains. A thin sheet of wood came out. When he pushed the plane harder, the sheet of wood appearing was thicker. ”As you see, the harder you press it down, the more it will cut. Bear in mind, pushing it hard down might not safe as much time as you think. The strength required is exponentially higher.”

”To the size of the plane, there is not difference in usually. The smaller one is for more delicate work. The bigger one is for more general work. Now you try it.” He handed her the smaller plane to work with first. She could try the bigger plan if she wished to.

Isabelle took the plane, pressed it on the wood and pushed it. She continued shaving off the thickness of the wood until the she hit the line. Then she continued on all of the other sides to make it to the required length, width and thickness.

”Raised it at an angle for a more finesse cut.” Juran commented. ”And make sure you press firmly, even if it is suppose to be a light cut.”

It took a while, but Juran was pleased with the end result. ”At the end of the brightening, just remember the basics and all will be fine.”

”Next off, mallet, chisel and the hand drill.” He took those tools out. ”With these tools and the other tools learned, I will go into making Dado. Come, I will show you.”

Taking a prepared piece of 2 by 4 foot plank, he clamped it tightly. He took similar plank and measured its thickness. 2 inches thick. He took a pencil and drew a line across the clamped wood width at its 1/4 mark. Then measuring 2 inches from his first line, he drew another line. Next, he measured 1/8 of an inch at its thickness. ”You can guess it by now. We are going to cut a groove to connect the two pieces of wood together.”

He used a saw to cut the two lines, down to its 1/8 inch mark. Then he took a chisel and started chiselling the wood away, using the hammer to pound gently. ”Not too hard. We want to remove only this bit.”

Once it was done, he took the loose piece of wood and placed it standing on the groove. A perfect fit! ”Well, you try. Do it on the other side.”

Isabelle measured 1/4 mark from the other side of the wood and drew a line. Then she drew another line 2 inches away. Then 1/8 deep.

Slowly, she used the saw to cut into the line. Finally the chisel to remove off the wood. With Juran’s example, she knew what to do, but chiselling was harder than it looked. She took it slow, hammering gently, not wanting to chisel too deep.

Juran approved Isabelle’s work after it was done. ”Good job. Slow and steady is the way. No need to rush.”

”As we say, practice make perfect. Go practice drawing, cutting and grooving. Cut a few more planks from those wood over there to fit the orders. Then you can use those spare wood there to practice on your chiseling.” There was a small pile of wood, most 2 by 4 foot long.

Isabelle was very pleased with her work. “Thank you. I will make sure even after I learn, I will not rush any of my work.”

She took the planks and started her work on them. She measured and drew out the lines. Using the appropriate saw, she started cutting out the wood, just off the line. After that was done, she used to plane to reduce it to the proper size. She took another few more pieces to practice on her measuring, drawing and cutting.

Then she moved on to chiselling. As taught, she drew the lines. She even drew the lines to the depth she had to cut. Then she sawed on the line before chiselling away the excess wood.

Woodcrafting was fun!
