[Refuge Of Medonia] Someone Afflicted This Way Comes (Calanon, Liahal)

Era XXIV - Summer - Ulyris

Droplets of river water formed streams of their own as they worked their way down the material, carving their way around every fold and crease before dropping onto the ground below. The material twisted, forcing more fluid to flee the fibres and let gravity take hold.

Gods, how Moss hated river crossings!

He had already been in a foul mood. He had set off towards Medonia from Port Alyxandrya, briefly emboldened to face some of the ghosts of his past, but had balked at the idea when push came to shove. He was grateful to know he had history in the capital city, and one day he would surely return, but the visions he'd seen...

That was why he'd wanted to travel alone. That was why he'd changed direction and found himself wandering aimlessly through the countryside. That was why he had avoided the small ferryman who could have carried him across the river without having to touch water. That was why he'd chosen to ford the river instead.

The water had only been up to his thighs, which was comfortable enough, but losing his footing on a loose rock that rested upon the riverbed had sent him tumbling into the current.

What was it with getting soaked through while traveling between cities?

After the initial splutterings and curses, Moss had opted to remove his tunic and leather vest to let them dry in the warmth of the summer sunslight. But that had been at least a candlemark ago, and although he had left the riverbank far behind him, he had still brought plenty of water with him.

And so there he was, topless in a forest glade somewhere in the Medonia countryside, wringing out his shirt, with no good reason to be there and no suitable destination to look forward to.

How had it come to this?

It was odd for the elf being back in Medonia. It felt such a long while ago that he had journeyed here with friends, a task set ahead of them. So much had changed. The Dolwoods themselves he heard were almost impassable now, the efforts of the Emerald Dawn to coax the forest back from the darkness that had shadowed it had failed. Some strange magic was at work there now, turning tree and fern into razor glass, making it even less hospitable than it had been before.

His path did not take him close enough to those woods to see for himself, but in all honesty he was not hugely disappointed. The sun was shining, the day was warm and altogether too pleasant to have to deal with razor glass.

At least it was, until he stumbled across a half-naked, very wet, individual, who’s face did not suggest he felt the same. The elf squinted a little, a look of bemusement stealing across his face, before it was replaced with a dawning recognition.

“Moss?” he called, pausing a little way off and raising his brows. If he wasn’t mistaken, the rather soggy specimen in front of him was the same man who on their first meeting had smothered himself in mud. Humans were very odd sometimes. That had been back in Spring though, and some way from here. It was an odd coincidence indeed that their paths had crossed. And it would be interesting to hear whatever explanation Moss had for his current state of disarray. With barely concealed humour, Calanon half raised a hand in greeting.

“Mae govannen, friend” The elf’s gaze swept over the man in slight consternation. “ Are you…quite well?”

Thump.

The nimrban’s ears twitched, registering the sound. There was the briefest pause as she considered this, before a whirlwind of cream fur and talons were sent whirring along the branch, hopping over the Quel’anthasan and barreling down the base of the tree. There was some shuffling at the forest floor as taloned paws sifted through the dead leaves, but Rauko would retrieve her bounty soon enough. It was only a few seconds later and the creature was back in Liahal’s lap, dropping the copper sword in a lavender palm and purring her smugness. If nimrbans could be smug, Rauko would be the puffiest.

”Good titta.” She offered the creature a scratch behind her ears, pulling a fastened candy from her bag and offering it to greedy paws. Rauko chittered her exclamations, hopping to the far end of their perch bushy tailed and satisfied.

Snap.

Another twitch from the nimrban. Only it was not the sound of coin hitting the forest floor, but the snap of a twig. Someone was close. The Quel’anthasan leaned forward from their shared tree branch and tipped her head through the trees, toward the river bank. A wash of skin caught her eye, and she let her gaze rest on the man as he pulled off his shirt and began wringing it out in front of him. Lia’s face twisted, the smallest mocking sound escaping her as she settled her back against the trunk of the tree. ”You never ford the river Rauko, foolish edanhuman.” Her eyes left him to rummage through her bag, but Rauko chirped in a series of rapid warnings, bushy tailed and shaking her backside as if preparing to pounce. This was it, the nimrban was ready for the major leagues.

”No, Rauko. Do not be bothered. He has nothing of value.” But RaukoDemon was aptly named, and though pint-sized, would remain ill-mannered and iron-willed. Another squeal signaled her departure, hopping to a neighboring branch and darting straight toward the human. When Lia had brought her attention back to the river bank, there was not one but two now, as the human had been joined by another. ”Fething demon...” She had considered trailing after Rauko, but it was impossible to catch up now so she remained on her low lying branch and awaited the outcome.

A cyclone of fur would meet them soon enough on the forest floor, with the nimrban not making a very discrete appearance for one, soon launching herself at the human man’s legs and scrambling for his pockets to try to snatch what she could.

Admittedly, this would need a bit more work.

oocI'll let you decide if Rauko pickpockets anything. :)

Moss' focus remained on his tunic as he wrung it out. Frustratingly, despite a growing pool of water at his feet, the material insisted on clinging to as much liquid as it could. Clearly, it would be a while before it would dry enough for him to wear comfortably, and with his other changes of clothes that had been inside his knapsack being just as wet, it seemed he was confined to his topless state for the time being.

He draped his sodden tunic over a rock that was catching the sunslight, then untied the cord of his necklace and placed it in his pocket. Given he still had no understanding of what the giant's tooth that hung from his piece of jewelry represented, or even why he had it in his possession, keeping it out of sight seemed like the prudent thing to do.

Moss' dark grey eyes scanned the glade, articles of clothing and other pieces of equipment basking in the warmth of the brightening in an attempt to clean everything. It certainly wasn't what he'd hoped for when he'd been eating rosyun that morning.

If only Igrainne had been nearby. On the bright side, at least he wouldn't be recognised out here in the middle of nowhere.

And then, as if the gods were teasing him, he suddenly realised he wasn't alone. Moss looked up when he heard the familiar voice.

"Vedui, Calanon," he responded with a slightly embarrassed smile, making no effort to explain his state of dress or why his possessions were strewn across the clearing. "How are you?"

And then the nimrban appeared, all fur and talons, rapidly crawling up his leather leggings.

What the feth?

Clearly, the gods were not yet finished with their games.

The human tried to shake it free but the creature had clearly met resistance before, and had learnt how to hang on. More leg kicking ensued, until eventually Moss tried to manhandle it, but not before the furry thief had snatched the necklace from his pocket. After a brief struggle, the human's fingers managed to find the scruff at the back of the nimrban's neck, and he took a firm hold, lifting the cream-coloured arrival up into the air and showing it to Calanon, the necklace dangling from the pickpocket's mouth.

"Where on Telath did you come from, hmm?"

Barely had the elf and man exchanged a greeting when a bundle of fur appeared as if from nowhere, chattering and attaching itself to Moss’ legs as if trying to scale to the motherland. As is oft the way with friends, Calanon was of the laugh first and check for injuries later school of thought. And it was difficult not to laugh, witnessing the human male trying to shake the tenacious little creature free like it were an overfriendly dog. Unless it were venomous. Then he might feel bad for not attempting to help. But the chances of that were slim, surely?

So the elf merely stood back and watched the dance between man and beast with a wide smile upon his face. If he recalled correctly. Moss had a penchant for thigh hugging too, so this was likely some divine justice. Once the human had managed to get a hold of the little monkey…..cat….monkey, and held it wriggling at arm’s length, Calanon decided that he was rather fond of the thing.

“ Clearly it could not resist your dazzling display of brawn, mellon” the elf offered dryly. “ Tell me again why you are undressing in the forest?”

He glanced around them as he spoke, wondering if this was the creature’s natural habitat, and if there were likely to be any more on their way to offer assistance to their captured comrade.

The Quel’anthasan’s back was still against the trunk of the tree, her legs extended in front of her. It was no surprise Rauko would be caught of course, and Liahal considered the order of operations of her teachings briefly. Perhaps stealth should have been prioritized first. But now the nimrban was struggling against the man as he held her by the scruff of her neck, chattering in quick bursts of sound.

She supposed that was her cue and the elf sighed, peeling herself from the base of the tree a thumping lightly to the ground. The Quel’anthasan was dressed simply this brightening, clad in tan pants and a loose, white blouse. She approached the riverbank with deliberate steps and a long stride that not only carried the Quel’anthasan’s unusual height, but an unabashed sense of pride. Poised, was the Quel’anthasan’s gait, and it would appear through the woman’s movement that she was just at home in the wilds as she was against cobblestone streets.

Finally reaching the pair of them, she nodded an acknowledgement to the human, considering the man briefly. He stunted her in height, which was admittedly humbling, the woman expressing this discomfort by a subconscious hand to her hair. Human men were often taller than her, but it was a power position she was not willing to accept easily. He had a solid build, perhaps that of a soldier, and she did little to hide her rather outward assessment of the man’s bareness.

”I tried telling her edan, but my demon, she does not listen.” If the woman was apologizing for Rauko's outburst, that was as close to it as the human was going to get. ”You’ll release her now, hm?” The words were heavily accented, the syllables carrying the lilting and musical inflections of her mother tongue, and seemingly at odds with the sharp way in which she delivered them.

It was only then the Quel’anthasan was removed from the human and finding her focus on the elf. Sylrosian, if her memory served her properly, though Aelyrian elves had a knack for looking fairly similar to her. He reminded her vaguely of Sigwart, and a curl of a smile approached her as she realized she'd need to catch him from behind to see if this elf could serve as a proper memory of her favorite bartender.

To him, a proper elvish greeting, Liahal bowing deeply, a widely regarded act of respect and acknowledgement. A somewhat uncharacteristic act of respect and ackowledgment, but here it was. ”Do you understand me?” She said to him flatly, her tone somewhat curt upon realizing the elf looked down to her also. She responded with a straightening of her spine, a roll of her shoulders sliding down her back. She spoke her first tongue, and though Trelorean and Aelyrian Elvish were not vastly different, you never knew with these elves...

Rauko remained struggling within the man’s grasp, teeth tightly bound around the cord of the necklace.

Calanon's laughter was not lost on Moss as he wrestled on his own with the nimrban. Apparently the elf had deemed it more suitable to stand back and offer criticism.

"Helpful as ever, Calanon," the human smirked as the creature chirped and wriggled, its taloned limbs flailing in futility.

Moss cast his gaze around the glade, waving his free hand over his various soaked items as the owner of a bazaar might do when sizing up the wealth of a prospective customer.

"Clearly I am trying to return to my original form," he quipped, his tone not unfriendly. "Either that, or - contrary to popular belief - the River Roland is flowing well this brightening."

Moss' attention turned towards Liahal not because he saw her, but because Rauko did, its degree of chatter and squirming increasing suddenly. All the bearded traveler's dark grey eyes had to do was follow the creature's gaze and all of a sudden there were three of them in a small space that had so recently been Moss' sodden domain.

What was it with these elves? Did they hide in forests, waiting for unfortunate humans to mock and critique?

"Vedui," he offered warmly enough, using the only elven he knew, despite the fact that he had correctly assumed her to be the owner of the furry troublemaker that still held his necklace.

The woman carried a presence about her. Indubitably, she was as attractive as an elf with only one pointed ear could realistically expect to be, but the way she held herself showed that she felt she was in control of the situation. And yet her pet was helplessly in the human's grip.

"Aye, she seems strong willed," he nodded in response, the statement ambiguous enough that it could have applied to Rauko or her owner in equal measure. "And she has something of mine."

Moss indicated the necklace that dangled from the nimrban's mouth, rapidly swinging each time the creature wriggled or turned its head. The human cast a cursory glance towards Calanon before returning his focus to Liahal.

"A trade, perhaps?" he offered with a sly grin and a shrug of his shoulders. "I get my trinket, and you get your pet. Seems fair, yes?"

The mere notion of an exchange was more than a little farcical. Moss was soaking wet and topless, and he was trying to imply that he was on equal footing with the poised elf before him. But the gods loved a trier.

It was hard to fathom what depth of wisdom had led the human to attempt to ford the river, but soggy or no, the elf was glad to have stumbled upon his friend. He looked pityingly at Moss and all his soaked possessions.

“ You have done a fair job of failing so far, it would seem”

He might have added more, had his attention not been drawn by the approach of a third to their impromptu gathering. Judging by the excited chittering of the fur baby that Moss still held. Calanon too made the assumption that this other, a Trelorean by all indications, was the keeper of the creature.

As she spoke to Moss in heavily accented common, the Sylrosian took measure of the elfess. Not subtle, his fanciful coloured cousins. This one was awash in lavender, skin and hair so clearly marking her as high elf, if her haughty posture alone did not. When her eyes swivelled to meet his gaze and she bowed low, he returned the greeting, a gentle smile only slipping minutely at her rather curt address.

Ta maa ve' ta arwen en amin It appears so my lady

One brow lifted doubtfully at her supposition that her language would be beyond him, and he unconsciously straightened as she did, unsure quite why it seemed necessary, only that it did. High Elf or not, he would not cower in her parma violet presence.

“Quel andune a ‘lle” Good Afternoon to you

It was enough, and he fell silent, looking between the she elf and the human as Moss attempted to negotiate the handover of the monkey cat. Cal glanced at the wriggling creature which for all intents and purposes seemed to have divested Moss of something valuable, and he rather wondered if it were not some trained pickpocket. Novel. Perhaps Moss would be better off keeping the thing.

oocSorry for the lame post guys, but wanted to keep this moving.

Vedui, he told her, and the Quel’anthasan’s mouth formed something of a sympathetic smile. Human mouth’s were not built for elvish, but he was trying.

There was certainly more than a breath’s worth of posturing between the three of them. Liahal would not miss the settling glance from the human on her nicked ear, the Quel’anthasan responding with an unconscious recoil from him. It was not that Liahal was ashamed of her disfigurement, but pride was a hard thing to swallow. He was talking again, the human was, but Liahal had drifted far before then.

It was the jeweler’s face that she saw now, retching up pink bile after she tried to drown him. But she had failed. And now it was the bloody stump of his arm that she saw, but despite the hedgemage’s best efforts to shame him, she still could not stop him from fleeing. Like a coward.

And she has something of mine…

How long had she been away? Her expression was painted over then, regaining her composure. ”You don’t keep your valuables in your pockets, edan.” Her voice lifted as if she might mock him, but she refrained, only glancing at the elf for some hint toward explanation. Perhaps he did not know better. Did he not know better? ”Pockets are made for picking, yes?” Rauko fussed in his grip, clearly not satisfied or soothed by the way she was being held captive.

It was then that he offered a trade, which breached a wide smile from the woman, perhaps even the first authentic expression since meeting. ”He is a very bad trader toror’brother, does he not know?” She said to the elf. She had never bothered learning the intricacies of Aelyrian Elvish, but the man proved to understand Trelorean well enough. Her eyes flicked to his briefly as she addressed him, and she couldn’t help but notice how awkwardly rigid he stood. ”You need a drink toror', or someone to share your bed with.” Perhaps then he could stand without being so terse.

”I will get my Rauko either way vanimabeautiful, but you are a very bad businessman.” He had grabbed all of her attention by now, as was apparent by the gradual sweep of her gaze up the length of him. He was impressive for a human, but Liahal had always fancied the brashness of human men. ”What is the human saying, possession is 9/10th’s of the law?” Her brows lifted, nodding to the struggling nimrban. The human, after all, had hold of the thing. And Rauko of course, had hold of the necklace. ”Perhaps you’ll be better suited to make deals with Rauko, hm?”

It was quite a strike of coincidence when Lia happened to speak of the law just then. Because lawlessness, it turned out, was a bit of a problem out here in these woods near Medonia, where bandits had grown more bold in the wake of the destruction of the xetan war. Such an environment attracted all sorts... cutthroats, thieves, extortionists. And the sorts who whistled along the tree line and then took random travelers by surprise.

The two elves and the river-bathing human found themselves surrounded by a lot of men and women in mismatched gear. They had masks fashioned from all sorts of materials that covered various degrees of their faces. Most of them held bows and arrows, although a few were wielding swords, and there seemed to be about ten in all, having broken the woods from all directions.

Many of them were thin, some of which were clearly elves. Perhaps that was why, as the trio had gone on with their conversation, they had managed to sneak up on them so easily. Or was it easy? Maybe they were experts. They certainly didn't wear the gear of well-trained experts. But maybe that was neither here nor there.

A figure hopped down from the trees, a broad smile on his human face. He wore black gear and a matching-colored mask, long hair tied into a ponytail behind him. He had the swagger of an arrogant man as he approached the three.

"What have we here? Travelers! Oohh, what sort of monkey is that?" He took a step forward, only for the creature to try and retreat from him, although the action was hardly successful from within Moss's grasp. The reaction alone resulted in a disappointed sound from the black-garbed man, who clucked his tongue at it. "I know, I do not look like a kind man. But I assure you that I am. In fact-" He swiveled, looking toward the human and then the two elves - "Where are you headed, friends? Perhaps you're in need of directions?"

Even as he spoke, a few of the figures around them stepped forward a little, a few eyeing the group for weapons and appraising Lia's strange-looking pet. Surely that would be a prize for anyone.

Moss' sly grin only grew when Liahal spoke of the best use for his pockets, and he thought he might be getting some traction when she smiled at his suggestion of a trade. But then she turned to Calanon and spoke in the Elvish tongue, and although he couldn't understand her words, the tone didn't sound particularly flattering.

And then she looked back at him. He saw the gaze. And then she made her counter offer.

There was an element of the meeting that reminded Moss of Ministra. Not the Ministra he had last seen in the bowels of Aelyria Prime, who had suddenly gone cold and exposed his vulnerabilities out of sheer boredom. No, she reminded him of the first Ministra, who used her mind to entice; who knew how to play games.

The grin returned and was accompanied by a slight cocking of the head.

"I'm unsure, milady, whether your Rauko possesses the necklace, or if she is herself possessed by it? Perhaps they are forever bound to one another?"

He paused then, distracted by an unexpected shift of light over the elf's shoulder. He went to say something, then saw another movement somewhere else. He turned just in time to see the human land from his elevated perch.

His free hand instinctively shifted to his hip, but the hilt of his sword didn't greet it. How could it, when it was lying helplessly in the clearing? Moss was about to lose all of his possessions.

Feth.

He found himself gripping the scruff of Rauko's neck more firmly, suddenly protective of the pickpocketing creature. He pulled his hand back when the man spoke to the nimrban, then slowly stepped back himself until he could offer the pet back to its owner.

Their game would have to wait.

"We can continue our trade later," he murmured quietly, painfully conscious that he was giving his only possession within reach to a complete stranger.

By the gods! How could this brightening get any worse?

Moss looked about him, knowing he couldn't outright attack anyone, and to leave - even if such a thing was possible while surrounded - meant abandoning all of his items.

But that didn't stop him from dabbling in a bit of arcana.

His gaze returned to the new arrivals, but his mind was seeking to Focus, weaving coloured threads over his sight as he scanned the group for the runt of the litter. The threads intertwined, starting with an angry red and a cool blue to balance the emotive colour. Green followed, as did yellow, and he mentally tied them into a knot, seeking the white that often emanated from such a mixture of hues.

It was then that he attempted to cast Bind at the weak figure's eyes, hoping to close them and render them frozen in place. Perhaps a lack of vision might cause the figure to panic, and who knew what that might lead to?

The elf's eyes widened at the Trelorean's words, and he wondered for a moment if he should be offended. Looking back at his rainbow coloured cousin he decided against it, instead offering an appraising look in return.

"Na lle vestea, arwen en amin?" Are you offering, my lady?

He shrugged, lips curling upwards before he broke eye contact and shifted his gaze back to the still squirming Nirban that was still clutching Moss' valuables as he in turn clutched the creature.

He would wonder later just how he had managed to be caught so unawares by their unexpected company, but as the figures appeared from the tree line and surrounded the three, it was not the opportune moment to be asking how and why. Now the Sylrosian tensed, hand slipping surreptitiously to the hilt of his sword as he shifted somewhat so his back was to his companions, facing out at the ramshackle circle that had formed about them. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine he counted, as another, their leader perhaps, dropped from the trees. Not pleasing odds, but beggars could not be choosers.

" You are kind, friend, to offer such help" was the reply the elf offered to the long haired human who addressed them " But we are not lost, so no need to trouble yourself".

From the corner of his eye he noted the subtle movements of the man's company, and took a moment to find his own focus. Should their new friends' intentions be as unfriendly as he feared, then he would be ready to employ force energy if needed. It seemed unless they would be willing to hand over their treasures that blood would inevitably be shed.

Blood.

Calanon gave an involuntarily shudder at the reaction the thought caused in him, that irritatingly present murmur flaring to a shout, but he shook it off. Useful as that dark power might be, he would not find it here, and he could not afford to be distracted by the echoes of it either.

Fingers clenched around the hilt of Adilah as he calculated the distance between the nearest bandit and himself. He hoped his companions were readying themselves to defend as well, for with the numbers they faced , they would need to be.

And then he propositioned her, the elf did. She grinned toward him, clearly pleased he had agreed to play with her. This sort of banter had always fancied the Quel’anthasan. Call it habit, or boredom, but it was wits and word play such as this that had always broken up the monotony of highborn living. While the woman’s hands may have lost their callouses from nearly an era away from the empire, her esprit was as colorful as ever.

”Are you well practiced toror’?” He was looking her over, passing her a look not unlike the way she had assessed the human just moments prior. ”Or will I need to teach you?” It would be a shame if he could not hold his liquor, after all.

To the human, a scoff. ”Either way melamin, it seems it is time to part with your jewelry, yes? Will you miss it so?” She teased him.

But the banter would be cut short. It was the human who tipped her off first, turning away from her as another figure dipped from the trees. He addressed the trio, and then to Rauko herself, stepping toward them with a sort of confidence that could be considered admirable in different circumstances. The human relinquished Rauko then, perhaps realizing there were larger issues to address than petty pickpockets. She nodded in agreement, cupping Rauko underneath two hands before the creature took it’s rightful spot atop the Quel’anthasan’s shoulder.

The man in black gave her an uneasy feeling, this paired with the looming figures in the background was enough to prickle the hairs on the back of Lia’s neck. It was not often that the Quel'anthasan found herself in these sorts of situations, but she would be damned if she let that nervousness be shown outwardly. Both men fingered toward their weapons, and although the human would be left empty handed, the elf would stand equipped with a sword at his hip.

”Are you well practiced, toror’?.” And now she referred to the weapon at his hip of course, the question lilting and fluid in the elvish tongue.

And though the threads of arcana begged to be awakened, Liahal would not seek to fasten them. Instead she would practice patience, a rare occurrence for the elf, perhaps even, a spectacle. So mature, was Liahal. So grown up and adult, was the woman after coming back to the empire. But ringleader was all swagger and ponytail, and the woman could only behave so long.

”You look stupid with a ponytail.” Maturity was overrated, really.

Muse is an upstanding Citizen

The bandit arched a brow at Moss when the man only muttered to himself in response to the goings-on. "I'm sorry, Friend, you'll have to speak up if you want to be heard. I'm quite daft, you understand." He stuck a gloved finger in his ear and made a twisting motion as if to clear it, then winked and at the bearded man before swiveling to look upon the others.

At this point the nimrban was returned to its original owner. Meanwhile, a few of the bandits were stepping forward and retrieving some of Moss's discarded items, not even bothering to inspect them more closely before retreating a little and lifting their weapons again. The leader was bobbing his head at Calanon as the elf gave a response. At least he knew how to speak properly.

"Then you should know that these woods are not always safe, my friend. We are not the worst of the lots to be wandering in the wake of the xet."

He then gasped in mock offense at Lia's observation, placing a hand upon his heart. "But the mask does not offend you, maiden? I will take that as a partial win, then."

The man stroked at his chin as he then appraised the three, and lifted a hand to those who had claimed Moss's belongings. They froze, eyeing their leader as if with bated breath.

"Now I may have been mistaken, which -" he laughed - "Does not happen often. But it would seem our companions don't seem as rich in possession as we had initially assumed."

At this, one person held up one of Moss's belongings as if it were filthy, nodding in unimpressed agreement. "They looked fancy from afar," that one drawled.

"No worries, Jarl. This one certainly looks fancy - I cannot blame you." The man shot another wink to Lia, after which a cry came from somewhere in the back.

A few faces swiveled to look at the man who was feeling at his face with one hand, eyes closed, his other arm reaching out for a companion nearby. The woman next to him offered her arm, flashing the leader a bewildered look.

"I can't see," the man who had cried out was explaining. "I can't open my eyes, Boss!"

A few snickers erupted through the group and a figure near Calanon rolled his eyes. "Oh Ioannes, not again," that one grumbled.

"Now, now!" the bandit said over the din. "Let's not get distracted. It would seem that we've made a terrible mistake. You see, here we thought you were stragglers of the caravan over yonder." He waved his hands in some general direction beyond. "Very wealthy sorts, it seems... and for some reason... of the mind to be very, very discreet. You wouldn't happen to be friends of theirs, would you?"

Cal’s eyebrows quirked and the smile that had lifted his lips broadened. “Amin caela n'uma nurae” I have had no complaints he replied, canting his head to the side a little. “Nan' amin naa ten'oio willien istimae, hodoer But I am forever willing to learn, wise one. There was something quite fascinating about the smooth lavender skin of the elfess, she gave good lilac. He could certainly think of worse things to do with a darkening than explore it.

Realising they were being rather impolite talking on in a language that Moss didn’t understand – though perhaps it was better that he didn’t- the elf was just about to apologise when their company appeared, and the light-hearted atmosphere was dimmed somewhat.

Calanon remained on edge as the figures around the outskirts of the group began to sift through Moss’ scattered belongings, although he managed a small smile as his kinswoman managed to insult their new friend. She was funny, even if their position were not.

But it seemed as there might be some reprieve before violence or magic was called upon, and the elf found his fingers flexing as he tried to decide if he were pleased or disappointed at this development. The leader waved his hand, and the motions of his crew ceased, causing Calanon’s eyes to narrow as he sought falsity in the man’s words. True enough, they might not have been the most finely bedecked travellers, but his experiences had taught him that if people were taking things for free, they usually weren’t so discerning about what it was they took. So he was more than suspicious of the motives of this masked stranger and his band of associates.

At the question directed their way, the elf turned to glance toward both Lia and Moss. Would it serve them well to be ‘friends’ of this caravan? Could it buy them a little time, make them a less disposable commodity, or just make them more of a target? He wasn’t sure, but didn’t much like either option. Unfortunately he was not a mind reader, so the right answer eluded him for now.
