Maybe I'm Hungry For More Than I've Got

Feet colder than the snow that choked the city
My wings too wild to clip and cage around me
So maybe I'm selfish for being an actor
Pretending to gather when I am a hunter
Or maybe I'm wicked for eating the apple
Or maybe I'm hungry for more than I've got

- "Runaway" Ryn Weaver

Spring XXIII

She'd heard more about than she'd actually seen. Glass, they said, as far as they could see. She'd been anxious to see it, excited even. Even knowing the source of the glass, the fact that it was a mistake and likely not good for anyone, she was nonetheless...excited. And very few things got the glassblower terribly excited these days. A glass forest. How curious, how different. How very much like something Iseult preferred in comparison to the disgusting, shedding forests she was generally familiar with. There was something...clean...about a forest made of glass. (This might have something to do with the fact that wild spaces made Iseult distinctly uncomfortable.)

So the glassblower, finally untangling herself from her business, her work, everything, had packed her satchel and slung it over her shoulder to head out and take a look. She'd brought the usual things one took to defend herself against potential dangers--her sword was strapped at her hip and her daggers at the small of her back--but she'd fallen victim to a bit of whimsy and tucked away among her rations and a change of clothing a box of her charcoal and a few pieces of paper...incase the things she saw inspired her to sketch out a new bit of art.

Iseult advanced upon the glassy trees, wondering if they were translucent or if the glass simply encased the trees. She'd step up close and touch the first tree she came upon, trying to get a better look and understanding for the trees or at least the way they looked. Of course, there was a better way to find out how the tree lived and functioned (if indeed it actually did) was to break off a piece of it and see what its interior looked like. She wondered, too, what would happen when she melted down this glass. What sort of properties would it bear?

Although her full intention was to eventually delve deeper into the heart of the woods, into the heart of the Enchanted Glade itself, the glassblower reached out to one of the lower hanging branches, to one of the smaller pieces that was twig-like an endeavored to snap a piece of it off through physical effort alone. Would it break? If it broke, what did it look like in the center of the glass? Curious, so curious, about what a glass tree might look like.

Crystalline woods, a glittering expanse of pale green glass stretched as far as the eyes could see where the dark wilds of the Dolwoods had previously existed. Rumours and bard’s tales alike believed that the Dolwoods was entirely composed of glass on its outskirts. What lay at the heart of the Dolwoods and its Enchanted Glade, of the fell regions where the Dark Fae and the Redcaps lived, and the haunt of the Silver Dragon? There was plenty who knew a friend of a friend with information, but actual truth remained elusive.

Smooth to the touch at first, though as Iseult gave the leaf a better going over? She was to discover that the minuscule hairs, the trichomes existed and that they’d simply broken off - tiny, but hardly sharp or all that resilient to damage. Potentially dangerous to breathe in however in large does - glass shards remained glass shards, however small.

Light, as light as a leaf and allowing far more light to descend through the woods now that the thick canopy was effectively translucent. The threatening, foreboding nature of the Dolwoods had taken quite a hit to its reputation now that the Suns of Telath could finally shine down upon the landscape. Buds and shoots were forming, and insofar as Iseult could see? The glass was very much alive after what Someone had done to the forestry.

The glass branch broke, perhaps a touch more brittle than wood, but it broke all the same. The interior of the branch a trifle greener at its centre, but otherwise? Living glass.

The glassblower was all too familiar with the danger of tiny glass shards shredding themselves through the air around her--after all, she had conducted such assaults on the Xet in Medonia, killing off their opponents with the shattering of small glass globes. So she took a step back as she broke off a piece of the branch, her eyes drawn down to the piece she turned over in her hands, admiring the look, the feel, the strangeness of it.

She held it up close, peering into its center. Curious, to see the green vein zipping through the interior. She popped open her bag and took her extra shirt, wrapping it around the glass before stowing it. Iseult considered, briefly, that this might not be a wise course of action--the Dolwoods having a reputation as it did--but there it was and how could she do anything else? (What she really wanted to do was cut down a whole tree and haul it back to her workshop, breaking and melting it down to see how it functioned. She'd have to do with collecting bits and pieces as she went.

Iseult continued walking. Her eyes roved over the landscape as she moved into the interior, more consumed and concerned about the glass rather than anything else that might be lurking. She'd stop to inspect a new display of the glass every so often--a different tree, a bush perhaps, vines if she saw them. She'd try to get a sample of each one as she went, careful to take low from the tree and to keep her head up as she did so, creating some distance between her mouth and the breaking glass.

There was a faint rustle of leaves as Iseult broke away a small part of the tree, and as she stowed away the fragment of living glass? It still felt vaguely warm to touch as if it’d been sitting out to cool within one of the Half-Elf’s various workshops. Alive, or perhaps just a side effect of the Dolwoods being comprised of a material that was far more adept at retaining the heat of Telath’s suns when compared to conventional flora.

Wandering, where the natural (unnatural) ability to be waylaid or lost within the Dolwoods was proving to be a non-event. The canopy allowed plenty of light, purging the darkness of the forest and even allowing for the edge of the woods to be visible through the nigh translucent material for a considerable distance yet. Suffice that when sticking towards the outskirts of the Dolwoods? A lot of guides were being put out of work or forced to venture into the more dangerous heart of the forest to earn their keep.

The run on effect of a certain Spellbreaker having cost dozens of people their careers was bound to go largely unnoticed by the Provincial economy, such was life.

Samples collected and every now and again, Iseult would spy movement. The occasional bird in the canopy or a mouse scampering along; the flora glass and the fauna? Huh. A little glasswork mouse!

She meandered through, amazed and perhaps even amused. Strayer had done this? Maybe she needed to get him angry more often--a world like this would have been more entertaining, more comfortable to walk through rather than the rough leaves and bark of a real forest. This? This Iseult could more than get used to.

Did that make her a bad person?

She shrugged it off, deciding how could it? Glass was her profession. Certainly it was natural to be curious, excited even, over such a phenomenon as this.

The scurry of movement grabbed at the glassblower's attention. A mouse! Made of glass? Curiosity and interest snagged at the glassblower and she crafted a spell, tossing it towards the mouse. An endeavor to catch the glass mouse in a hollow glass ball and hover it above the ground and towards Iseult with a little bit of air.

The little ball of glass formed around the mouse as it scurried along, and with the use of air to levitate coming a couple seconds later? The little glass mouse in its ball was bouncing off tree roots and ping-ponging between tree-trunks before Iseult brought an end to its little escapade.

Just in time for a hawk to dart down, the flurry of green glass feathers filling the air as it encountered the glass orb surrounding the glass mouse and bounced off with an indignant scream. The Dolwoods had been affected in far more than just the flora it seemed as Iseult had herself a little glass rodent and a number of green-tinged feathers filling the air around her.

Whatever the case might have been, the fauna at least seemed to be able to survive in such an unconventional state rather than falling victim to starvation. Nature it seemed found a way.

Perhaps somewhere, an indignant Carmelya was helping things along and trying to coerce balance in the Spellbreaker’s error. But for now? Everything was truly tranquil around Iseult.

Iseult curled her fingers around the glass globe...and then abruptly yelped and darted sideways as the hawk descended upon her, wings a flurry, startling. She shook a little until the surprise settled more into aggravation. This? This was why Iseult did her best to avoid such wild places. She glared after the bird as it retreated into the sky, half-tempted for just a moment to try to catch that, too...but decidedly disinterested in trying to deal with the bird once all was said and done. One little mouse? That one she could deal with. An angry bird that liked meat (or glass mice)? No. Thank you.

So she tucked the glass globed mouse in her pack, then added in the feathers that had dropped around her. Glass gathering, at the very least!

But she had also come for another purpose, a purpose she was now wishing she'd brought a guide along for. But...what was the use? The landscape had surely changed, things were different now. What use was a guide here? So she moved further into the glass forest, rationalizing that the glade was deeper in, towards the heart. Perhaps there would be signs somewhere. Perhaps there would be a way to find it.

If she had to, maybe she could go above the forest...

Options.

For now she walked onward, keeping an eye out for unique glass features.

Unique was relative. As a consequence of the alterations of the Dolwoods makeup? Everything was unique with its glass composition - up to and including a faint scratching sound as the poor little glass mouse was gnawing, scratching away at the interior of the orb that ensnared it. Desperately trying to escape the magical prison before suffocation took its toll. Glass though it was? The creatures of the Dolwoods still needed to eat and breathe it seemed.

Wandering deeper and deeper into the woods, the first sign that Iseult was on the right path was the sight of twisting vines in the green glass - fragile flowers and fruit that bespoke of the Vlinerie that were noted for their healing properties. Or had been. Eating glass? Probably less likely to result in a healed injury, and instead provide all the pleasures of internal bleeding and ulcers.

Faint scratching and desperate chirping squeaks from within Iseult’s pack.

There was no path, just the winding of the forest and the occasional sound of glass being crunched beneath her feet. Only for a sound of water bubbling, a small brook nearby.

The steady and low sound of scratching and chirping wore at the edges of Iseult's patience as she walked along. This was part of the reason why Iseult had given up her only pet (a gifted dog) to Finn. They were demanding and needy, requiring more attention than she was generally willing to give. Give me this, do that. Iseult jostled her pack lightly, as if knocking the mouse around might help steer it towards silence.

Then she wondered...did glass mice require air to breathe?

Hm.

Iseult focused on another spell, one around the globe. She siphoned out the air that was within the globe. Well, the mouse would either die from lack of air or the little experiment would prove that the converted glass mouse wasn't going to require any air to live. Yes, an experiment. That was all.

She kept walking as she spun and released the spell, eying the fruits and flowers and wondering how those might add to her collection? She reached out to try to detach the flowers and fruit delicately from the vines, to add them to her pack, ears tuning to the water. That hadn't been changed. Curious. It might merit a look, too...

So many things to see and touch and investigate!

Poor little glass mouse! If only it had been more fortuitous and lived within the Pegasus Woods! Squeeeeeeeak! Scatching and gnawing at the inside of the glass ball, trying to fashion a mouse hole within the smooth surface was proving difficult. Not to mention, making for a bit of a ruckus in Iseult’s pack.

Air sucked out, and with it? The squeaking only became more frantic and desperate. And then? After a minute perhaps two, Iseult heard only a sad little ‘Sqk’ and then she got her peace and quiet.

The Dolwoods didn’t seem to care one way or the other, the glass trees remaining indifferent to the plight of the poor little mouse that had surely met a sad little end. The Vlinerie remained, the flowers incredibly fragile and several petals crumbling before an intact one could be obtained. The fruit was easier to claim, for all that the slightly red tinged glass was solid all the way through and feeling not unlike a paperweight.

Bubbling glass, the brook? Not something Iseult should be drinking anytime soon. Cold though, it didn’t seem to require the usual temperance’s to retain its liquid state. And unlike the trees? It was silvery rather than green tinged glass.

So many things to preoccupy herself that might it might have become easy to get lost. Indeed, with the brooks tinkling melody calling to her, Iseult took the time to take a seat beside it, conjuring up another glass container with a stopper. This she used to collect some of the strange broken glass water in. She then wrapped it in a shirt and tucked that, too, into her bag (briefly checking on the glass mouse, which she gave a gentle rattle to, ensuring it was in fact dead).

She'd rest there momentarily, getting her bearings as she looked around the immediate vicinity. Silver water rather than green. Did it mean anything in conjunction with the glades, said to be silver...or gold...or both? She didn't know but wagered that it had more to do with the fact that it was--or had been--water. The trees and leaves were green because they were...well...mostly green. Just as the glass flowers had been red because...they had been red.

Logic.

Smart.

The glassblower drew in a breath and stood herself up, tucking her pack with care over her shoulder. She struck out again, looking to follow the flowers deeper into the woods. Time to stop playing around and find what she had come to look for.

Dead mouse was dead. The poor little glass rodent had squeaked its last squeak as Iseult sat peacefully alongside the bubbling little brook of molten glass with its silvery sheen.

Serenity, the Dolwoods had taken up a sense of tranquility that ran in stark contrast to the brooding darkness and thick forestry that had featured in many a Bard’s Tale throughout the lands. Malevolent woods that resisted any and all encroaching upon its borders by civilisation, and at times? Had indeed shoved back we some of the small hamlets and towns had discovered. New Coldmoon’s northern walls were still in ruins from where the trees had shifted their borders quite forcibly during the Darkening candlemarks.

Further into the woods!

And to Iseult’s North-West? She could sense the tell-tale side effects of a rather large spell being prepared. Moreover, it bore the hallmarks of Elementalism. Its complexity while alien in casting form, bespoke of a primary use of Fire Essence with just a touch of Earth. Power? It could have been an Amplified Adept perhaps or a Master somewhere within the depths of the Dolwoods.

The ripple of magic to the north and west made Iseult slow her steps. She hesitated, coming to a slow stop, shifting as she canted her cheek. A fire spell in the middle of glass woods? She might have dismissed it as maybe just a campfire spell...if it weren't for the feeling that it was a rather large spell and campfire spells, as Iseult knew very well herself, did not demand that much of a cost.

The question was...did she head towards it or avoid it as much as possible? It was a question that ought to have been simple: avoid, avoid, avoid. However, what were the chances that the spell was not being conducted anywhere near the glade that she wanted to find? It was, after all, her goal, that glade.

Iseult shifted uncomfortably, trying to weigh her options. She drew in a deep breath and huffed out a sigh of exasperation. Well. She could head in that direction but at least she had the smarts (she hoped) to be cautious about it. She'd try to angle herself that way but keep to the edges of where she could feel the main pulse of the spell. She didn't want to go directly into the heart of it, after all. That would be stupid.

Cautious as a …

Well, no, not like a mouse. As otherwise the poor glass corpse within Iseult’s backpack might well have survived for another brightening.

Otherwise? Things were largely uneventful as Iseult drew ever closer towards the Elemental spell that was being woven. Its complexity continued to prove elusive, feeling akin hearing a foreign dialect. While the syllables might have been the same as those of a known language, and the end result being meaningful dialogue, the formation of said syllables didn’t correspond with the individual words known. Different words created from another language, but same meaning.

Flora that was taking on a silvery and golden hue in places, faint though it was, it bespoke that Iseult was drawing closer to the Arcane Glade of the Dolwoods. Or one of them at any rate. A faint bubbling sound of a brook or creek somewhere nearby and now?

Iseult could see the ‘aura’ of the spell that was being woven. At its nexus? A humanoid figure that was summoning forth incredible amounts of Fire.

Well, this was interesting.

Iseult lingered off to the side, observing the human-figure within the swell of summoned fire. Curious, indeed. What as he-she-it doing, gathering so much fire essence? And, really, was Iseult going to find herself caring whatsoever? After all, was it any of her business? Surely she could operate and do what she came to do without having to worry about that...?

The question was, did she see if she could travel onward and get to her business i the glade or did she actually worry about this...?

And what exactly did she think she was going to do, if she stepped in? With the amount power behind all that channeling, there was a strength there to be reckoned with...

Iseult made a small noise of agitation. Not an easy decision: watch and wait (boring); interfere (that probably took more time than Iseult really had); move on (and worry about the powerful individual wreathed in fire). Great options.

Moving warily closer, Iseult pitched voice loudly: "So are you planning on burning the place down or...?" She probably should have said melting. Melting made more sense these days.
