Niven is a glorious SuperheroNiven is a glorious SuperheroNiven is a glorious SuperheroNiven is a glorious Superhero

Niven looked at Lia, confused. The Trelorian had clearly not heard a word she’d been saying. As bade, the Silrosian looked up to the sky and searched it with her eyes for shapes. Cocking her head so that she was looking at the skies from the same vantage point as Lia was, Niven considered the cloud formations as the wind blew them around. “I think I see a bunny in that one,” she said pointing up. “There is a lamb there, and that one looks like a lion roaring.”

She wondered if there was something specific she was supposed to be looking for. Lia had seemed to find the wisp and billows of the clouds much more interesting than anything she was saying. Which was fine with Niven. She had the tendency to ramble sometimes and Lia seems to her to be more of a free spirit and so she was willing to put up with Lia’s quirkiness.

“Feel it? What it’s like to be a druid?” Niven considered the question before her. “I think that it would be wonderful,” she finally said, looking back up at the clouds to see what other shapes she could find. It seemed to be the thing that her companion wanted to do and Niven was more than happy to oblige her. She completely missed the the smirk on Lia’s lips.

The Quel’anthasan giggled. A bunny. A lamb. There was something to be said about what one saw in the clouds. Once upon a time she had been told that the clouds would shape themselves to fit the person. As if, the clouds could reflect their very soul. ”You have a kindness seler. You are gentle.” She resisted the urge to touch her, despite the desire. There was a tenderness to the Silrosian’s mannerisms. It was in her fluid movements and easy posture. Perhaps this was her bunny. The lamb was her innocence surely, but still, there was also the lion. ”But you are not soft, hm?” There was some sort of heat inside the woman. A burning fire. It would suit Liahal to find that fire. To poke and tend to it’s hearth.

She was sitting up now, leaning in toward the Silrosian as if she were to tell her a very important secret. And this time she did not resist the urge to touch her, two hands coming to wrap around Niven’s head with a gentle firmness. If Liahal had been the introspective type, perhaps she would have thought twice on the carelessness of her next actions. If Liahal had been the responsible sort, perhaps she would have discussed this more thoroughly with her new friend. But Liahal was neither of these things, preferring to act out in impassioned bursts over bothering herself with the eventual repercussions.

And so Niven’s world would begin to go hazy, eventually fading out completely as she fell into unonsiousness.

oocLia is unbinding Niven! Usually people have an unbinding dream, feel free to describe it!

There was no time to be surprised. There was no time to respond. All Niven knew was that Liahal touched her and there was a searing heat to her touch. Then all went black.

There was darkness. Niven was puzzled. How did she get here? The elf realized her eyes were closed and she opened them.

There was green. Everywhere. As Niven looked around, she was stunned to find that as her eyes focused, the green blur she was seeing was actually foliage. But it was familiar. It took her a few moments to realize that she was laying on her back on the floor of a familiar glen. Raising herself into a sitting position, she looked around. The Silrosian found herself at her childhood home. Her mother and aunt and a few of her female cousins were no more than a few meters away doing the washing and chatting as they did their chore. Her uncle was across the way in his workshop, whistling as he forged various hunting weapons for the villagers. There was the familiar scraping sound of metal on wood as his knife skinned the bark off a long branch for a long bow. Childlike laughter reached her ears and she turned in the direction of the sound. Youngling Elf children, her cousin’s children, ran past her and her eyes trailed them as they passed. Her eyes rested on the sight of the other males of her family were teaching trapping to some of the older village boys. Niven smiled. The soft song of a bird rounded out the serene scene. Yet no one was aware of her presence, or if they were they gave no indication.

A burning smell rode on the breeze. The bird stopped singing. Niven turned her head and searched for the source of the scent. She spotted what looked like a black wisp. A few moments later, it was a large billowing cloud. Her eyes darted to the others and saw that they had noticed it too. Her uncle had stopped whistling and had emerged from his workspace. Horror etched in his features. He yelled at the women who abandoned their chore and started herding the children away from the black cloud that was getting bigger and bigger. The adults picked up the littlest of them and began to run, the older children weaving in and out of their moving bodies. Screams started as other elves noticed the menacing haze and were surrounded and burned by it.

Niven scrambled to her feet and started running after the group. She could see the flashes of fire as the trees caught out of her peripheral vision. The screams as those caught by the cloud were enveloped and burned where they stood rang in her ears. This only fuelled her. She had to get away.

Puffs of the darkness started to bear down on her. She began to cough as the dark cloud got closer, and the smoke burned her esophagus and her lungs. It wasn’t long before she was gasping for breath, her lungs screaming for fresh air, but finding none. The fog started to snake around her feet. Either it was getting faster or she was slowing down. Maybe both. Every breath started to feel as if there was a weight on her chest and it got heavier and heavier, crushing the air out of her. She choked and fell to her knees. The darkness started to engulf her. She lifted her head to see fingers of vapour catching up with the children as they tired and then to the adults who stopped to try and help them along. Her last sight was of her family huddled together around a fallen child. The last sound she heard was their screams of agony as the fog enveloped and charred the flesh off their bodies. The weight became more and more unbearable. The darkness felt oppressive like it was pressing on her, trying to smother her. Niven felt like she couldn’t breathe. It was as if it was alive and the only thing it could think of doing was snuff her out. The elf squeezed her eyes shut. Niven was sure she too was going to succumb to the unforgiving, life stealing fog. Then everything went dark and quiet.

The silence was unnerving. Niven opened one eye and then both, finding herself surrounded by nothing but darkness. She took a deep breath and found that she could breathe with ease. She took a few deep breaths to be sure. The ground beneath her, black as it was, was firm and she braced herself against it as she stood. Reaching out around her, she felt for something, anything, and found nothing. She let out a short exhale, a breath filled with fear and uncertainty.

Suddenly there was light. The elf raised her arm to shield her face from the blinding brightness and squinted. As her eyes adjusted, she slowly lowered her arm. Before, where there was black darkness, there was now white light. Niven turned completely around, looking for anything that would explain what was happening.

“Niven,” a woman’s voice boomed. The elf straightened and looked around for a source and found none. “Niven,” it said again. The voice was familiar. Niven’s eyes widened. “Mother?” she asked, tentatively, her tone confused. “Where are you?” She whirled around looking for her. She saw nothing and no one. Incomprehension clouded her features. What was going on?

“Niven,” the disembodied voice said again, more urgently this time.
“Yes! I’m here!” Niven cried. “Niven. My daughter. My heart. My reason for being.” Tears welled up in the Silrosian’s eyes. “Mother,” she said, her voice breaking. “I am so proud of you. Remember us. Remember what you were taught. Never forget your people, who they were, what the stood for. Remember who you are and who watches over you. Always have hope. Honour our memories by loving the nature we protected. Work to restore the balance. It is out of order. Let Carmelya guide you and use you. Honour us in this way.” Tears flowed freely down Niven’s face. “Mother,” she said, though the word came out more like a whimper. She fell to the ground and the light faded slowly back into darkness.

When Niven’s eyes fluttered open as she returned to consciousness, and she found herself once again laying on her back. The creamy monkey-cat stood over her looking at her with a curious expression. “Oh!” the Silrosian squeaked and she sat up abruptly. She shook her head to clear it and then noticed Lia still sitting next to her. “Wha… What happened?"

Rauko had been sleeping soundly on the woman’s chest, curled into a tight ball and finding comfort in the Silrosian’s steady heartbeat. It wasn’t until Niven’s heart began to race, that Rauko would stir. The nimrban nearly jumped to it’s feet, and a flurry of chitters and clicks came all at once, pulling Liahal’s attentions away from the much smaller pine needle and dandelion crown she was making for the tiny thing.

Niven twitched in her sleep, her breath heavy and jagged. It was a sight not unfamiliar to the Quel’anthasan, as plagued with nightmares as the empire had been these past couple eras. But despite this, it was not an easy thing to swallow. She could attest to how real feeling and vivid unbinding dreams could be, but she herself had only experienced pleasant, nearly divine experiences.

”Stop. You must let her sit with it.” She scolded the nimrban. Interrupting an unbinding could have catastrophic consequences, a fate the woman would not wish on anyone.

The next half candle mark consisted of these persistent twitches and gasps, and soon enough Niven’s eyes would open to a very concerned, if not nervous nimrban. As she sat up, Rauko scrambled up to the woman’s shoulder, burrowing herself in the elf’s hair and finding a relieved purr.

”How do you feel vanima? Be slow, hm? You’ve just been unbound.” She beamed at her for just a moment, before bringing her attentions back to the nimrban crown. Niven would still feel the same, in a way. All of the parts and pieces that made up then Silrosian would be in tact, however there would be something more inside her. It was like a piece of her senses had been unlocked, opening up a piece of the world she had not realized had been there before. She could sense a strange essence all around her, from the dirt underneath her all the way to the sweeping branches that shaded them.

”You’ve only been out half a candlemark or so. But you’ll tell me when you’re ready to begin, yes? There are many things to learn before you can be released into the wild.” There was a nonchalance to her voice, as if the unbinding in itself had just been another thing to hand wave and speak lightly of. As if this would not change the Silrosian’s life forever.

”Would daisies be too much?” She was speaking of Rauko's crown now, which housed mostly fluffy dandelions and their ridged leaves.

As the nimrban snuggled up to her, Niven was grateful for the soothing warmth and purr. She smiled to herself and reached up to scratch the creature behind its ears.

“Unbound?”
Confusion clouded the Silrosian’s features. She noticed then, that something was different. She couldn’t put her finger on it exactly, but there was something… more. It didn’t feel wrong though. Actually, everything felt more right than it had felt in a long time. She touched the soil beneath her hand, but she didn’t just feel it as she had any other time and she’d spent plenty of time in her garden and had never felt this feeling. It was as if she could sense it as well as feel it. The confusion melted away and wonder replaced it. “Wow,” she breathed.

“Begin?” Niven repeated, her attention turning back to Lia. “Yes,” she nodded, “Teach me. Teach me about this…this….” Niven looked at her hands and then around again at the nature surrounding her. She didn’t know what it was, but she could feel it. She looked back at Liahal, the wonder reflected in her jade eyes. “Teach me."

Her eyes shifting back to the crown, the elf considered it for a moment. “Perhaps just one. There.” She pointed to the ‘front’ of the crown. “It will be the crown's jewel."

Liahal let the crown rest momentarily, watching as Niven took in the nature essence all around them. It was not as strong as it had been in other parts of the empire, but it still was hiding in the earth, the trunks of the trees. The sparse bushes. ”What do you feel seler? Describe it to me.” Her voice was light and wafty, the Quel’anthasan finding visible pleasure in watching the woman experience essence for the first time. She had never unbound anyone before, and inwardly she wished to pull that feeling from her, to experience it herself again. But minor magic was fickle and would not heed her will so soon after it was used.

But Niven was not here to romanticize on druidism, and she promptly asked to begin. She wanted to learn. So Liahal would teach her. ”It is like you have woken up for the first time, yes? You are feeling nature essence.”

She paused, considering the crown and it’s jewel. ”Perfect.” And a daisy was placed on the front of the crown, shining broadly as it’s only jewel. She clicked her tongue once, Rauko responding with a shimmy under Niven’s hair. A moment later the nimrban’s head popped out from the Silrosian’s hair, and Liahal fastened the crown on the tiny beast’s head.

She expected crowning a nimrban would be an equal effort to keeping socks on an infant, but it would be worth a try.

”Essence is the fuel for your spells. It is the water and the sunslight. The nourishment, you understand?” Lia's hand tapped her chest, before reaching toward Niven’s heart and tapping hers too. ”And in there. You hold vis.” She nodded. ”Vis is the seed of your spells. You will collect nature essence and pull it toward you to mix with your vis, and this will form mana.” There was some debate in the scholarly communities whether vis lived in one's physical body or their soul, but Liahal knew it was the latter.

”Let’s try it now, yes?”

“I feel… I feel...” Niven didn’t have words. She breathed in and concentrated on what this new sense felt like, her eyes scanning everything around her.“I feel…. Life.” Her gaze shifted back to the Trelorian and she cocked her head. She didn’t know how to describe how she was feeling, what she was feeling. Suddenly she could feel the nature around her like it was another entity unto itself. It felt strange and wonderful all at the same time. Truth be told, she was enjoying it. It was like taking a relationship to a new level of intimacy. She smiled as she ran her hands along the ground, her slender fingers gently caressing it. “It’s essence,” she repeated, softly, putting a name to the feeling.

The Silrosian giggled as the nimrban’s head popped out through her hair. There was even a shift in how she could sense the animal. The crown was becoming on the monkey-cat and Niven smiled approvingly

Lia explained what the essence was and she nodded understanding. That she had no issue feeling. It was everywhere. The “vis” was a little more abstract and Niven’s brow furrowed in confusion. “The vis is inside me? How much do I have? How do I know?” she asked, her hand moving to touch her chest where Liahal had tapped it.

Lia instructed her to try and so Niven did. Her face took on a serious look of concentration and attempted to pull the essence towards her.

It was a strange and beautiful thing, to watch the Silrosian as she sat with this new ability she held inside her. Arcana was just as much surreal biology as it was craftsmanship, an equal mixing of science and artistry. There was a lightness in the Quel’anthasan’s gut, and a blend of both sobering pride and the thrill of the spontaneity of it all pulled at her in opposite directions. ”It is divine.” She said of the feeling of life. The only feeling that could ever come close of course, was love.

”How much vis?” At this, the Quel’anthasan’s lips peeled into a wicked grin. She pulled herself together and moved to stand, brushing the clinging leaves from her clothing. ”I could teach you the scholarly way seler, give you books to read and rules to memorize.” An exceptionally stubborn burr had made it into the woman’s blouse, Liahal now giving the thorny thing the entirety of her attention. ”But will you remember all of these things when it’s important? When you are alone and afraid?” It would not be a far leap to mark Liahal Kard en i’Elentiri as having a penchant for the dramatic, but the premise still stood. Surely, Liahal could tell Niven she had three spells to begin with, and after she amplified, she would have six initiate spells, or three journeyman spells, and so and and so forth. But vulgar memorization and arithimetic could not hold a candle to being able to sense what she needed to learn, to really feel it.

”Lets find out, hm?” And she started walking down the rocky slopes, beckoning the elf to follow.

”I’ve imparted your initiate spells in your head. You’ll find them if you look, hm? Try forming mana, and channel it to cast something.”

Niven nodded at Lia's assessment of what the life felt like. It was divine. This was a new way of communing with life. She wondered if she would always feel like this, in awe of the new sense or if at some point it would come to feel normal to experience telath like this.

The Silrosian watched as her teacher rose from the ground. She considered her words and nodded. "No, you are right. I understand. It's better to feel than to know in this case."

Niven scrambled to her feet as Liahal started walking away, taking care to not let the nimrban on her shoulders fall as she was so carefully nested.

Niven cocked her head at the news of her knowledge. She stopped for a moment as she searched inside her mind and easily found the spells Liahal spoke of. Her eyebrows raised as she found them.

Immediately. Niven knew which spell she wanted to use first. Her green eyes scanned the ground until she found a sprout of a tree.

Concentrating, Niven attempted to pull the essence from around her, mix it with her vis and cast Growth on the plant.

It was a good thing Rauko was used to riding on shoulders, and the nimrban fastened talons a little deeper into the woman’s blouse as Niven stood.

The next moment was blessed with concentration, Niven pulling the nature essence from the earth around her. She could feel as it pilled within the rocks and the trees. Within the dead leaves and the dandelions. Until finally, it found residence within the Silrosian. It mixed with her vis to form mana, and soon the weave was cast.

The sprout was a scrawny thing, a jack pine sapling no taller than Rauko if the tiny thing were to stand upright on hind legs. Though silent, the cast entwined within it's roots, cascading through its trunk to it's branches. Soon more needles sprouted from it’s branches, and new growth divided and sprung to life.

”It is natural for you, vanima.” It was a compliment, not given because she was Silrosian but because it was rare to succeed the first time. Or in Liahal’s case, the second time. Or the third time.

”Again.” But as she said it, the crack of a twig interrupted the silence. Who was there?

The feeling of the essence entering her and mixing with her vis was indescribable. But Niven was now keenly aware of the power the spell had and what it felt like to use some of her vis. As she cast the spell, she could feel the energy leave her. She was emptier, but not empty. This is what Liahal had meant. The instinctive knowledge was a magnificent thing and the Silrosian marvelled at it.

The baby tree sprouted more needles and grew in height as well as width and Niven's eyes sparkled as she watched the fruits of her new power. She beamed at Lia who seemed pleased as well. Niven was thrilled that she'd managed to successfully cast her first spell.

The order to do it again was given, and she started to turn when the sound of a twig snapping had her head sharply turning towards the noise. She made a mental note of the nimrban on her shoulder, so it wasn't the pet. Wide eyes looked at Liahal. They were not alone. "Are you expecting someone?" she asked in a low voice.

Pride. Liahal wore it especially well now, with her student succeeding on her very first cast. It had taken the Quel’anthasan many, many tries before she could affect the material plane like this, and while Liahal had never felt shame for this, her father had felt more than their fair share for the both of them. Elementalism had never come easily for the woman, just as a stuffy academy had not.

But to come to the woods, away from marbled walls and books and things. To practice arcana where it ought to be practiced, how it ought to practiced. Yes, Liahal was beaming with pride.

Rauko twitched at the unexpected sound, her ears flinching toward the source of it. Niven would speak but Lia would not need to answer, as the cause of the sound made itself very well apparent in the next few moments. A large, barrel chested creature shifted out from the treeline, the beast a few yards away but still towering above the two elves. It was hard to make out what it was, or what it had been, before the fog had gotten to it. Mangy, wet looking fur clung to it’s skin in patches, it’s skin appearing to ooze something foul from between the ill-kept fur. It’s lips were peeled away at the gumline, and glowing eyes were staring directly into the very soul of the Silrosian.

A throaty growl gave way to it’s former species, guttural. Raw. It had been a bear once, but it was not certain what it was now.

Secrets :

That's an ugly effin bear brah.

Rauko stiffening had the elf reaching up to the tiny beast that sat on her shoulder, scratching behind her ears in an effort to soothe her. Niven's heart was pounding in her chest, but outwardly she was succeeding in looking like she was all together.

No sooner had the words left her lips than the creature making the noise emerged from the trees. The Silrosian's jade eyes widened. It was huge and rather grotesque. But what exactly it was was still unclear. It was, however, big and scary looking. And it was looking right at her.

The growl caused her to take a step back and wish desperately she had her bow. While she wasn't big on shooting animals for sport, she wasn't against doing it in self-defence. But it did clear up what it was. Or had been. What had happened to this particular bear was a myst- ah. No, it made sense. This was the Xet's doing.

Compassion replaced fear. This was a great hulking beast of an animal who was angry and in pain. The oozing sores, the patchy fur, the lack of lips. This bear was hurting and scared.

Another spell floated into the forefront of her mind. Perhaps she'd be as lucky the second time as the first time. Taking a deep breath Niven once again pulled the essence from everything around her in and mix it with her vis and cast Calm Animal towards the scary bear.

Tiny talons clawed a little more snugly into the fabric of Niven’s blouse, and despite a scratch behind the ears the nimrban remain rigid. A flurry of tiny heartbeats thumped beside the Silrosian’s ear, as Rauko’s panic atop the elfess’ shoulder became audible.

The bear growled, bearing it’s teeth toward the twosome. Thick strings of drool dripped from a closed mouth, the saliva having no other place to go but down as the creature’s natural lips had receded so far back into the gumline. The Quel’anthasan’s expression moved through seasons quickly within the moment, changing from initial surprise, to disgust, and finally pity. Niven stepped back, while the bear stepped forward. It sniffed cautiously, sizing the pair up, eyes still locked on the fairer haired Silrosian.

”The fog.” She whispered, as if she spoke too loudly the beast would know they were talking about it. The nature essence was pulled instinctively, and it pooled within Lia, mixing with her vis to form mana before she had even realized it had been done. She was going to sew the spell into the material plane when her eyes flicked to her companion. Niven’s expression was something of deep concentration and Liahal’s lips curled into a smile, recognizing that expression on anyone. She was casting a spell.

It was a good thing Niven was a quick study.

The bear stepped forward again, muscles taut with the impression they might bound forward at any moment. Its front paws dug into the earth, and its forelegs bent deeply at the elbow. It was moving to pull up onto it’s hind legs when Niven’s spell hit.

It was an instant surrender. The beast visibly relaxed, deciding against standing taller and instead sitting back on its haunches. It's breathing slowed then, and while it kept Niven’s gaze, it did not look to be of any immediate threat.

”What do you think he will feel like vanima?” The bear was hardly placated before the Quel’anthasan stepped forward. It seemed curiosity bested the Quel’anthasan now, as it often did.

She was within arm’s reach of the thing before she spoke next. ”Keep him steady for me, yes?” And a white blouse was heaved over her head, pants kicked off. What was a purple elf one moment was a modest, fruiting olive tree in the next.

Though fear gripped the Silrosian as the creature that was once a bear took a step towards her, she didn’t move a muscle. The idea that her spell might not work came to the forefront of her mind and her green eyes widened slightly as she saw the muscles tighten on the animal. It was going to strike. The elf shut her eyes tight, bracing herself mentally for the attack she was certain was coming. But it didn’t.

Opening one eye, Niven noted the bear had visibly relaxed. The elf opened her other eye and a smile bloomed on her lips. Her spell had worked. She too relaxed as the bear stared into her eyes unthreateningly. It would seem she had a knack for this spell casting.

Looking over at the Trelorian when she spoke, Niven wanted to shoot Liahal a look of confusion but didn’t trust herself to break eye contact with the bear. ‘What he will feel like?’ In her peripheral vision, she watched as the purple elf kept moving closer. Now firmly in her line of sight, Niven’s jaw dropped as Liahal quickly stripped. In another moment she was a tree. Feeling helpless to change the situation, the silrosian inwardly sighed and kept her gaze steady on the now serene animal.

There was great pain in the animal's eyes. The pain it felt, the pain it had seen. Niven’s heart went out to the beast. The fog had deformed the poor mammal almost beyond recognition. There was a tugging at her heart to offer a soothing touch to the bear, to share in its sorrow, but she didn’t move. She wasn’t sure exactly how the spell worked or what would happen if she tried to touch the animal. And she had a family and a fiancé to consider. It would do none of them any good to have her do something foolish and get herself killed.

A smile played on her lips as she thought how this scene might look to someone happening upon them. An elf standing next to an olive tree, which had no place in this forest, locked into a staring contest with a disfigured bear and clothing strewn about on the forest floor. One might think she was more than a little crazy. Niven wasn’t sure she wasn’t. This was a strange day, for sure.
