[Ziel Aerca] This is Our House

Spring Era XXIV

"Probably easier to sneak in somehow, first," he considered aloud as he finished tightening the strap on his boot, smoke tendriling its way from the corner of his mouth. He patted at his midsection and double, triple checked his armor, making sure everything was in place given the nature of the work. He couldn't be sure there wouldn't be any fighting. It was an unfortunate side effect of working with gangs. He would have preferred not to get Ministra into danger, but he had learned that to be a fruitless endeavor by now.

He puffed on his cigarette.

During a pause, Adyn eyed his companion curiously to see how she was doing with her own preparations, making note to assist her if she needed it. He checked at his collar, and then in his pockets, making sure his weapons and tools were in place. He had lockpicks and his light orb somewhere in his belt, two short swords sheathed on his back and two daggers somewhere on his body. He decided that his bow would be more of a hindrance than anything, so he decided he would leave it behind.

He buckled a cowl onto the neck of his armor, hesitating to lift it over his head just yet. He leaned back, sighing, trying to find that peace that came before a job. The adrenaline would come in time. For now he needed mental silence.

"You sure you're up for this?" His eyes drifted to his companion again, the worry clear in them. He had worked with partners before, but never one that he personally cared about when it came to their well-being. He worried at how he might fail to help her in time if things became too difficult. He sighed. Only time would tell if the distraction was one he could handle.

At least, of all people, they worked for Sliucha. It never hurt to know a good doctor.

Ministra tugged at the collar of her new leather armor. Was it supposed to be this tight? She felt positively choked. Her eyes wandered helplessly over to the rogue who seemed to be taking stock of his own weaponry. He certainly was armed to the teeth. She felt decidedly underdressed with merely her twin daggers on her thighs. If this was going to become a regular thing, she might have to ask him to help her pick out some more tools of the trade.

She gazed out over the scene and offered a simple, "Hm?" as he said something about sneaking inside. Oh yes, they were here for a purpose. Murdering the people inside wasn't it either. Ministra didn't mind so much, as long as she got to punch a few people in the process. The bloodlust she normally had to deal with had all but subsided since uniting with the rogue. She found that she didn't miss it either.

She tugged at her collar again. Maybe she'd put in on too tight. The elf didn't bother to check though. She'd just keep tugging until she grew used to her new attire. If they were sneaking that meant she got to try out her new hood and mask. She was all too eager to do that. Ministra had forgotten to try it on in front of a mirror, so she would have to rely on Adyn's assessment of whether or not she appeared intimidating.

Fingerless gloves adorned her hands too. Another new addition to her fun black torture suit. Her hands reached to her hood and pulled it over her head. Once she felt that was properly situated, she pulled the mask around her face and grinned at Adyn.

"I think you already know the answer to that, Rogue," her eyes beamed at him from above her mask. This was fun already. She definitely felt the part of a sneaky person with her face and hair covered like this. She tugged at her collar, hoping it was time to get into the action. She should be able to ignore the choke if she was doing something other than standing here.

The rogue's eyes twinkled at the sight of Ministra in armor. It was not the set of leather itself that looked amusing to him - it was the absolute discomfort that she displayed in it. He continued to nurse the cigarette as he watched her tug and pull at random belts and buckles - She was almost squirming like an alicat with a sweater on. He wondered if they should have worked their way up from something less.. restricting. Too late for that now, he supposed. It would take double the time to get her back out of it, not that he found the thought and unappealing one.

He stood, boots softer than usual against the floor as he made his way to the doorway. He grabbed an empty bag and slung it around his shoulder, tightening to the strap at his chest. It never hurt to have something to put spoils in, even if he didn't intend to steal anything.

He swiveled on his heel, blue eyes alighting on the elf's own gaze, lips twitching with lingering amusement. She did look the part of a thief, he determined. He might just make one out of her yet.

"I might not be able to speak much once we're inside. Depends on what we run into. But whatever we find of value in there... drugs, coins, equipment... If we can't take it, we'll find a way to destroy it. Sound fair?" He handed her a bag of her own, grateful for an extra body to shoulder the weight of whatever loot he might come away with. Maybe having a partner wasn't so bad after all.

He knew that drawing her into himself would be uncomfortable between the two of them, so the man rested a hand on her hip instead. His gaze was solemn as he met her eyes with his.

"I know you can handle yourself," he said softly, removing the cigarette from his mouth and snuffing it so that he could plant a kiss on the woman's forehead. "But be careful for me, Little Bird."

With that the mask went over his mouth, the hood drawn over his head. It was time to get to work.

She took the offered bag from the rogue. What was she supposed to do with this? Tie it around her neck like a cape? The thought of anything else going around her neck made her want to gag. But carrying it seemed just as terrible. She needed both of her hands free so she could grab at her daggers.

The elf inspected the bag and came to the realization that she could sling it across her back. Well that was good then. Her blood quickened in her veins at the excitement of the situation. She was going to do this. She was going to be sneaky and steal things and set other things on fire. Ministra was suddenly overwhelmingly grateful that the rogue had let her in to this part of his life. It couldn't have been easy for him.

She saw that much in his eyes as he looked at her. She felt that much in his kiss to her forehead. And she heard that much in his words of caution and offer of her nickname.

A groan threatened to leave her throat when he said he wasn't going to be able to talk much inside. Of course it made sense. But then how was she supposed to know what to do? The last time she'd thought on her own, she'd been outed as a necromancer and Adyn screamed at her. The elf wished they had taken the time to make up hand signals.

"Adyn," she reached out for his arm as he drew his mask over his face. Her blue eyes gazed up into his. "Just..." She didn't know how to say that she felt completely out of her depth here. She didn't know what she would do in the heat of the moment and his life was in danger. The elf shouldn't be held responsible for killing people to save him, right?

"You be careful too," she raised up onto to her toes kissed him through both of their masks. That being said, she was determined to follow his lead and do whatever he told her- gestured to her- to do. She just hoped his gestures made sense and she could follow them easily.

Dress for the job you want.

OOCFeel free to describe any suitable preparations aside from what you've mentioned already. Could you give me a brief description of your relevant skills, and the items your character brought along?

The leather-clad couple had made their preparations, had exchanged encouragements, and were now ready to get this show on the road. And it had to be said, they certainly looked like they knew what they were doing, getting ready for some super fun breaking and entering. The house they'd been tipped about stood on the edge of the Malian Kame district, indistinct amongst its fellows if not for the fact that it stood three stories tall. Word was that Emile Sidan, the man rumoured to be working with the Preachers lived here. Tonight Adyn and Ministra would be trying to confirm these suspicions.

'Preachers' wasn't necessarily the label that the relatively new (or previously unknown) gang had chosen for themselves, but somehow the name had attached itself to the small, seemingly ragtag organisation. Rumour had it that they were trying to make Ziel Aerca a better place by interfering with the debauchery that set the city apart from the rest of the Empire. They conviced prostitutes to choose another profession, intercepted drug deliveries, and trashed those involved. Some said that their leader had once had a place in Vestia, with the Church of Faith, before he'd been excommunicated.

From where they were perched, on the roof of a house on the opposite side of the street, they had a good view of the door that served as the only entrance from the street. Each story held two windows —a room per window seemed likely— that had been covered with wooden shutters. Experience told Adyn that there would be another entrance at the back of the building, and that an alleyway could lead the duo to it. Perhaps there'd even be a small garden on that side of the house.

The lack of street lighting meant that the moon was their only source of light. The clouds overhead intermittently obscured it, casting even more shadow upon the city. They'd chosen a good night for their little adventure, easily manoeuvring towards their target unseen. Whether they could move silently as well as unseen, however, would ultimately determine the success of their mission. A house as big as this one would not run without help, and Sidan was known to enjoy his status as a successful man in a difficult neighbourhood. Servants were a great way to display wealth.

Secrets :

Skills
L1 Dagger / Unarmed
L2 Burglary
L1 Spellbreaking
L1 Freerunning / Acrobatics

Equipment: Oiled leather armor, cloth mask and hood, lockpick sets, glass bauble that glows in low light, a plain dagger in boot, another at the base of his back that prevents blood from clotting when it strikes. Empty bag, two short swords sheathed on back.

Adyn considered the building across the street and the type of people within it. He didn't want them dead, but he found their cause somewhat annoying in the light of what ideals the city had been built upon. The Preachers were trying to make the free city of Ziel something not so free. What point was there in having a city that so openly sneered at the rules of the empire only to try and beat it back down to conformity? At least, that's what he tried to tell himself as he reasoned with the morality of it all. But gods, if this didn't make things more complicated than they had to be.

He considered that the back door would be more discreet, but probably the main entrance for the conglomerate of servants that likely filtered in and out in greater quantity. A window would be ideal, if they were able to reach one from on high. He tried to determine if they could reach the rooftop of the building from the others nearby, but that might be less than silent... and Ministra didn't have the experience to traverse the city on high as easily as he did.

He determined they would get in closer, if they could, maybe maneuver their way toward the back using the shadows in the streets. He gave the building some distance as he attempted to make his way to the small alley behind it. He asked Ministra to stay further back a ways as he sidled up silently toward the alley to get a better look at the door and any windows above. He looked for activity in the building, and at how many servants hung about outside or came in and out over the course of time.

Ministra didn't care about the history of the Whodeewhats gang or what they did to anger Sliucha. She had a job to do and she was going to do it. That was the way things worked. Get in, steal their stuff, burn their other stuff, that was all she needed to know. The fact that they were boring do-gooders didn't sway her emotions one way or the other.

She watched Adyn's eyes as he glanced towards the rooftops. Ahhh, rooftops. Those were awesome. She wondered if he wanted to move that way. That would have been a nice trip down memory lane. Maybe rekindle something on one of the roofs before doing what they were here for. But nope. He decided to go down towards the ground. She was a little sad at that. Did he not think she could run across the rooftops? She was an elf after all. Little, lithe, graceful, blah blah blah... Point being, that she could have done it.

Wasn't her call though. So she followed him to melt into some shadows. Now that was something Ministra was good at. She'd been perfecting this for eras. The smiled behind her mask as she felt the shadows envelop her. It was nice to be home, even if it was for the briefest of visits.

She kept back a little ways from Adyn as he gestured for her to do. She hoped she'd read that one right at least. When he stopped and hugged the building, she did the same. She kept an eye out behind and to the side, as he looked forward and up. There was a need for a full picture here and with two sets of eyes it should be easier to see.

Secrets :
Skills
L1 Daggers
L1 Unarmed
L1 Necromancy

Equipment: Two plain daggers sheathed onto thighs, light leather armor, mask and hood, empty bag, looks that can kill and an attitude to match.

Moral compasses calibrated!

If people wanted to gamble themselves into debt, shoot chemicals up their veins, and sell their bodies (in whichever order), that was all fine for the two burglars who had been staking out Sidan's residence. In Ziel Aerca, the only rule was that there were no rules, right? How dare these Preachers restrict the freedom of its residents, trying to keep them away from substance abuse and criminality?

Reaching the other side of the building was a matter of crossing the street and mounting the lower roof of the neighbouring structure. Both Adyn and Mini —with a little help from Adyn— managed to climb up a house a little further down the street, and could then leisurely walk towards their target. When they were near, they spotted the light of a lantern or torch in the kitchen, which opened up into the garden. A shadow moved in and out of the light, and from the accompanying sounds they deduced that someone was doing the washing-up.

All the shutters were closed on the first and second floor, but one seemed unlatched. Naturally, it was the window that was the furthest away from their position; second floor and on the other side. One of them would probaby be able to reach it despite the smoothness of the wooden walls, but only if the other person provided some help in hoisting him or her up to the roof of the Sidan residence. From there, lowering oneself a little, the window could be reached.

Then again, they could just find a good spot in the garden to see who was still up and about at this hour.

Adyn scaled the smaller building and reached down to hoist Mini up along with him. It was a familiar dance, once that harkened back to nostalgic days in Prime. He grinned at her once when she met his eyes, but the gesture was hidden behind the mask and only seen from the eyes. On the other side they went down again, dropping to the streets, and he reached out to help her that way too as she descended after him.

Beyond, he noted the lamplight in the kitchen and the small garden below that. Servants were up and awake even in this hour, which certainly made things a little difficult. He noted the window they needed to get into, determining that he'd need to hoist Mini again and hope she could find a way to get him in afterward. The problem was, did he feel comfortable enough with that to risk?

He gauged the height of it, wondering if his training in acrobatics would allow him to run along it and make a leap, maybe latch onto something and pull himself up. If not...

He looked to Ministra, gesturing to the window. They could sit and observe, but the shutters were closed and he would only be able to see so much from those leaving and entering at this house. The window was their best bet. If she was willing to try, he could get her up there.

Rooftops and sunrises threatened to overtake her thoughts as the rogue helped her from perch to perch. They'd done as much on their first meeting and she couldn't keep the happiness from her eyes as the revisited the memory. She trusted that he wouldn't ever let her fall.

Her eyes appraised the building at they came closer. Someone was still awake. That was inconvenient, but not necessarily the worst thing. It shouldn't be too hard to subdue one person. She was being very mature about this no killing thing. She had to hand it to herself.

Adyn gestured upwards towards an unlatched shutter. She was fully prepared to hoist him up on her shoulders. Ministra was sure he couldn't be that heavy. She laced her fingers together in a gesture that said as much, but from the look in his eye it appeared he wanted to be the one doing the hoisting.

Oh sure! Throw the small elf into the window. That was much easier. Of course it made more sense. But it really did nothing for her sense of pride. She hated being thrown around. But fine. If Adyn was the one doing the throwing, she guessed she could endure as much. She would have to do some more pushups later though. Then the next time this sort of thing happened, maybe he would let her boost him.

Shrugging her shoulders, she went to him and let him help her up to the window. She was counting on her natural ability to maintain balance and quietness as she unlatched the shutters.

OOCThanks for your patience!

Guided by the silver light of the moon, Adyn watched the unlatched window and decided that there was a chance he could somehow get there. It wasn't his best bet though, and that was because he was accompanied by a lovely and lithe elf. Two people would be able to move onto the roof, and from there bend down to open the shutters before lowering themselves into an open window.

No straws were drawn as the duo silently decided that Ministra would be the one hoisted into the roof. Cupping his hands, Adyn provided the stepping stone that his elven companion required, and it wasn't difficult to lift Ministra up. The elf, from this new vantage point, could simply walk over to the further side of the building. Lying flat on her belly, she could reach down towards the shutters and carefully nudge them open.

What she found behind was utter darkness and the lingering smell of an extinguished candle. Was it time to go back for Adyn, or would she drop into the room first?
