[Ziel Aerca] Group A, Round One [Gowg, Adynirach, Nei Ying, Oliver]

They were ushered to the first room.

Walls of matte black surrounded them; some stretched to the ceiling. Others stabbed into the skies at various heights, revealing that this was no room, but a massive lobby. Glimpses and hints of other gamblers could be seen – the hundreds upon hundreds who had entered the tournament, fighting at the very same time for their lives.

For what was wealth, after all, if not life itself?

The ceiling, nearly thirty feet up, shone down with blinding light. Was it the heavens above? Or simply some arcane source?

These points of light would sear the retinas of the contestants. But they yielded little else. The room remained dim, almost pitch dark. Impossibly so, perhaps. And so, in that haze, they saw a massive table with four seats, attended by two well-attired men in black suits. One extended a hand, motioning for the contestants to sit.

“Welcome to the first round. But before we explain the rules of the game, please, have a seat.”

Adyn stepped up to the casino garbed in a plain, collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, a vest buttoned over that. His breeches, too, were plain but tailored, the pockets empty of any loose knick-knacks, coins, or otherwise. Although the man harbored no ill intentions toward the casino, his experience with any gambling had been cultivated within the underbelly of Aelyrian society, and his experience with the pastime was fraught with ... violent memories. Although a few eras ago he might not have even come here at all, the city of Free Ziel had been a destination he was considering for some time - and word of the Grand Casino tournament had been too much of a temptation for him to ignore. So he had come, but not without his wary disposition well in tow.

In the gentleman's right boot was settled a small, plain steel dagger. It was the only weapon on his person, meant singularly for his protection should he ever have need of it.

Beneath his collared shirt (and vest), a small pocket was sewn into the underside, and there within was a series of lockpicks... just in case. He didn't anticipate actually having the opportunity to use them, but they had come in handy in many situations in which his life had been endangered. Despite the nature of security in a place like this, he would have been remiss not to try to bring them at all.

Upon arriving for the tournament, the young rogue played along with whatever rules were declared for participation, waiting to see if any complaint was raised about his entry.

Ollie was dressed like a really expensive prostitute.

Mostly because he stole the shirt from a brothel he broke into a few nights ago. He couldn’t remember the name. Of both the brothel or the dude he stole it from.

Oh, no, he wasn’t gay per se. But he occasionally promised to pay for sex but instead jipped the hookers after they were lulled by his sweet, sweet rhythm and blues.

Anyway: white shirt, white pants, off-white underwear, matching boots. Faux fur scarf.

Armor? None! (Unless one counted stupidiciously good-looks as protection).

(Hint: it’s not. For both bodily harm and unwanted pregnancies)

Weapons? None! (Unless one counted an old, smelly, rusty dagger as a proper tool for self defense)

Accessors: Plenty! From his various escapades and clever way of stealing random nicknacks wherever he went / slept / broke into.

Special Attack: his good ol’ lute harp, his trusty friend, and domestic partner in crime.

But his real weapon was his voice. He was like a five-person boy band all wrapped up in one.

He still called dibs on being the successful one who eventually got a solo career, though.

Ollie took a seat and looked BAD ASS TO THE MAX.

Gowg is an upstanding Citizen

Gowg hated being in rooms, but at least this one actually had high ceilings which meant that he didn’t have to so much as bend down. The giant didn’t own much, or truly put much stock in material goods that weren’t necessary. How giant sword had been taken from him when he signed up, the only things left were his clothing, his visa and an old steel vambrace that he wore on his left arm. It wasn’t that he necessarily believed in luck, let alone that this old thing was lucky, it was just that it was always on.

If forced to he would remove it but it was no weapon.

While other may bring secret weapons Gowg brought only his size and his strength and perhaps his mind. He might not have been the smartest person in the world but giants weren’t known for being particularly bright or quick witted. Perhaps he would be able to take advantage of that. The way he lumbered towards the table was probably not helping him appear intelligent.

Then he sat down, on the floor if there wasn’t a giant sized chair available, hoping to win some coins.

Nei Ying Zhou is an upstanding Citizen
Nei Ying looked through squinted eyes at the room around them as she stepped from the lobby into this one. She could barely see the contestants assembled around her through the bright light from the ceiling. She herself was simply dressed in leather pants and a blue cotton shirt, along with simple leather boots. Although she had left her hammer and wakizashi outside, she had purchased a small dagger here in Ziel, which she now carried hidden in her cleavage. Furthermore, she had her hair done up with chopsticks. Technically not a weapon, but in a pinch you could stab into soft tissue.

Getting somewhat used to the bright light, she managed at least to get a look at her fellow contestants as she took a seat at the table as instructed by the two fancy men. The Giant was pretty obvious, a pretty plain looking person and a guy dressed all in white, almost blinding her all over again.
"Hey there, like the shirt," she said, shooting Ollie a wink which he probably couldn't even see. Then she turned to one of the fancy men and smiled. "So, what's the game going to be?"

The guests were seated in order of appearance.

Adynirach would be patted down, and his dagger would be taken before he were allowed to enter, if he so wished to proceed. The lockpicks, in their hidden pocket, would be far too discrete to be noticed – or at least if they had been, they had been ignored.

Oliver’s dagger would be treated much the same way as Adynirach’s, and a small token would be received for its redemption if he wished to proceed. Neither his lute nor his voice would be confiscated.

Gowg, to his fortune, had indeed found a giant-sized seat. The attendants gazed upon him for a moment, and then tied a matte black cloth around his steel vambrace, cautioning him not to remove the fabric.

Nei Ying’s dagger was removed as well. The chopsticks had been left unmolested, although the Prince, watching from some distance away in some far observatory or another, found some certain amusement in the fact that another had used the same method of secreting a last-ditch weapon that he too used.

A small briefcase was procured from underneath the table by one of the dealers. With a click, the latches were released, revealing fourty blocks of frozen, arcantrically-pressed ice engraved with the sigil of Ziel. Ten blocks were handed out to each contestant.

Another dealer brought a small deck of cards from a tray, wrapped in sealed ribbon.

A silver’d knife would cut the ribbon.

The cards were shuffled.

A card was securely affixed to the foreheads of each of the players with tree-sap.

The dealer smiled, and raised both hands, indicating that they had finished the set up.

“Welcome to the first round. The game is Dead Man’s Sherian Poker. One card has been dealt to each of you – you will see all player’s cards except for your own. Three community cards will then be placed face-up by the dealer one at a time. The best two-card hand is obtained by taking cards from either community cards or your own card. Players will have the option to check, bet, raise, or fold after each deal.”

He paused, and then continued.

“There will only be four rounds played. At the end of the three rounds, the player with the lowest chip count will be eliminated. In the case of a tie for lowest, all players with the lowest chip count will be eliminated. Any player who reaches 20 chips or eliminates a player may elect to be removed from the round, and be safe immediately.”

“The strength of hands, from weakest to strongest, is as follows: high card, suited, pair, and suited pair. Aces are the highest card, and 2s are the lowest. Suited hands are ranked on the basis of their highest card, as are pairs; in the case of a tied card value, suits will be used in the order of spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds, from strongest to weakest.”

A glint appeared in the dealer’s eye as he continued.

“One additional matter. We will neither assist nor hinder any player. This applies to any cheating as well. If you wish to report cheating, please do so to the supervisor at your table – we will, of course, stop any behavior, but there will be no retroactive revision of play. Any false accusations, of course, will be punished in accordance with the severity of the accusation. In gambling, like in life, there is no guarantee of fair play.”

“That is all. Mr. Adynirach, you are first to bet.”

It was a disappointment that the dagger had been confiscated, but such actions did not prevent the male from entering the establishment. He seated himself with a sigh, resting an ankle on the opposite knee before leaning back in his chair. He observed the others around him silently, taking in their various mannerisms and the ways that they spoke.

He flinched briefly when a card was affixed to his forehead, but as he settled in and listened to the words the dealer spoke, the strangeness of the action became more clear. A corner of his lips quirked slightly, and his eyes moved along the cards settled on the other contestants' heads, his expression thoughtful but relaxed.

The human male then placed two of his chips on the table to begin with.

With nothing but his tetanus dagger confiscated, Ollie was having a good day.

That streak of fortune only continued when his opponents' cards were revealed upon their foreheads.

The boy from the Capital laughed, pointing at each foe in turn.

"None of you have cards higher than sixes", Ollie blurted out. "Oh. Wait. Scratch that." He looked up at the nameless dealer. "Can I redact that? I wasn't suppose to give away their cards, right?"

He shrugged and doubled the chips offered by the serious-looking motherfether on his left.

Oliver la Penne still had no idea what he was doing. To kill the silence, he started to hum a rather fanciful remix of Aelyria's famous song ...for mourning. Idly, and without knowing it, he was producing a spellsong that actually depressed those present, making it harder to think, feel confident, or get an erection.

The giant didn't like the man that doubled the chips that he thought was already to much for a blind. He didn't take the man's comment seriously but sat there looking at the cards on his opponents head stroking his jaw. The bet was already at just about half that they could bet. He could pass but the winner of this round would have more buying power, a lower of the round was sure the be the first one out. He took a moment before making his move, a giant perhaps and just slow witted.

Gowg laid his betting blocks side my side then stacked them vertically. He didn't let the man's demeanor or humming bother him, well he thought he wouldn't but it's effects were there. Perhaps he would find him after the match to tell him what he thought. He wanted this Oliver to lose. He almost didn't care if he lost as well. Eventually he tossed in his bet of 4. Whoever won the amount given was going to be save if everyone matched.

With luck it would be the giant.

Flinching slightly as her own card was affixed to her forehead, Nei Ying quickly affected a neutral smile as she considered her opponents' cards. She raised an eyebrow as Adyn opened with two chips. Wasn't that a bit much for an opening round? Maybe he knew something that she didn't. Or maybe he just liked to play high. No reason for panic just yet.

Then came Oliver's turn to be daft apparently. He doubled the bet after blurting out things he really probably shouldn't. Whatever opinion Nei had about his appearance didn't extend to his mind. Cute, but a brain like a brain-dead donkey. Too bad. Still, things were getting interesting at least. If no one passed someone would be safe.

And while Ollie started to hum a thoroughly depressing tune, the Giant waited a long time to make his move. Nei picked up one of the chips and looked at the sigil imprinted upon it, moving it around in her hand to catch the light on it properly. Finally the Giant also tossed in four of his chips, turning the turn over to her.

Looking intently at the sigil on the chip, the Kemite girl wondered what to do next. But somehow she figured it wouldn't matter anyway. As if she could ever win at this game. Maybe it was a stupid idea to even come here. No, wait, that wasn't true. What was going on? She was so stoked to be here just a moment ago. Strange. She couldn't think like this. Maybe she should just go along for now, try to clear her head. With a sigh she collected four of her own chips and threw them onto the pile forming already.

Adyn nearly flinched the moment the white-clad hooker starting humming. The rogue's impassive face shifted into something of a frown as he considered the stupidly high hand the man had played, and he took several long moments to consider.

He didn't know what he was doing here. On the bright side, he wasn't losing any real coin (yet?), but on the other hand, he couldn't help but wonder if he had thrown himself into the very situation he had struggled to remove himself from in Port Alyxandrya so many eras before. Then again, who did he have to prove himself to anymore? His sister was dead. His motivation had left him.

His thoughts briefly flickered to his newly discovered brother, Elliot, and his dismissal of motivation to be a better person was immediately negated. No, he was an idiot to be here, but was it so much to hope for a small break?

What in the feth was he thinking? He attempted to shake himself from his reverie. He had no one to apologize to, nothing to feel sorry for. If he wanted something he had to take it, not sit and doubt every move he made. Besides, Adyn knew one thing the prostitute did not: the value of the man's card.

"I call."

Bets made! Four from each. Nei Ying, in the meantime, learned a bit about her face while staring at the sigil. Card shown.

First one down, nine of diamonds.

"Call", Ollie said while he tried to mad-dog the dangerous-looking fellow in front of him.

"I got yo numba", he said as menacingly as possible. "So you betta best BELIEVE."

Uh-oh. The drugs are starting to kick in. Did he forget to mention that?
