The Opera Primus
The Opera Primus
Rising above the buildings around it the Opera Primus rose like a strange twisted type of octupus with various arms spreading out from the center building. Compared to the palace and other goverment buildings it wasn't large but it rose above the buildings around it providing a majestic view from the roof.
The guest entered through huge iron gates. The fense was rather plain compared with the gate and the building beyond. The gates though had a circle one each half the tremble clef showing in the center of each, and the coat of arms of Prime sitting above them with half on each side of the gate. The gates them selves were large enough to allow to carriages to pass through side by side.
The courtyard beyond was paved with granite cobblestone that were beging to show the trail of the carriages that came and went each evening. The path circled around a large statue of an female Aelyrian. Its large wings spread upward, and its left hand holding a sheet of music while its right held a harp. Laterns around the base were setup allow for it to shin in the evening, which was the life of the opera house.
A stable stood off to either side of the the main building allowing for coaches and horses to be stored during the show. The stables were kept clean but even soap and elbow grease could clean the smell of horse away from the courtyard, and on windy evenings many a guest needed to use their hankerchiefs.
The main building rose five level above the courtyard. In the day light it wasn't much but at night it seemed to come alive. Rows of window ran the length of the front of the building and in the night the figures flanking the windows seemed to glow. The strange men that appeared to be holding up the sky were cast in copper that was reflected in the light of the candles.
The front enterance was a large pourch were valiets checked the tickets of the guests. Mingleling with merchants and nobles alike. The men were dressed in gold and purples. The purple pants and coats were compliments by white shirt and the gold edgeing. Each of them wore top hats also in purples and white gloves. The doors themselves were make of soild oak, and carved like the gates, but with ivy around the edges, and two huge golden handles.
At night the doors stood open allowing guest to enter the main hall. Marble floor with intracate patterns covered the floor. A grand stairs led the way up to the various levels of the theater part of the opera, and the doors at either end were guard by more footmen to keep guest from seeing the back stages of the opera. The enterances was flanked by two male Aelyrians who were dressed only in whisps of cloth that covered thoughts certian parts. Two more female Aelyrians flanked the stiars, and candleobras ran the length of the room preventing any shadows in the grand room.
The Auditorium.

Hi Atl,
Excellent work getting this started. So, we're looking at an Opera House that is slightly smaller, but still in the same calliber as the Royal Opera House built by Queen Anna the Strict. We should assume that it can comfortably accommodate up to 1,000 guests per performance. ("The Auditorium" is where we'll want to design the different areas, but for argument sake, let's say that there's an Orchestra Level Seating that can accommodate up to 300 seats (100 of them considered "Orchestra Front Center", the most expensive seats), a Mezannine that encircles the second tier accommodating 400 seats, and the final 300 seats distributed among five balconies (Far Right, Right, Center, Left, Far Left) with the 60 seats in the Center Balcony being the more expensive of the Balcony Seats.
Expenses
PER PERFORMANCE
The Staff will be the greatest expense of maintaining the Opera, but thankfully, rather than an ongoing expense, the Opera Primus will only incur expense (and generate revenue) each time it puts on a "performance" -- so you will be able to control when, and how much, certain events cost you. Let's run by a few figures (all of them, per performance, and in Gold Crowns as symbolized by ):
4 Stableboys @ 15 = 60
20 Footmen @ 10 = 200
10 Jantors @ 5 = 50
Quote:
41 Stage Hands
~20 Set Builders
~1 Stage Manager
3 Coaches
~1 Ballarina Teacher
~1 Music Teacher
~1 Singing Teacher
|
We should separate "recurring" expenses, per performance, with "one time" or "startup" expenses, the types of things that the Opera Primus would only ever incur once per series of performance. I would view the construction of sets to fall into that category, since in any opera put on would only need one set of settings and props. The same goes for the coaches, who would only provide instruction before and leading up to the actual performance. I will list those at the end of this "PER PERFORMANCE" listing.
19 Stage Hands @ 40 = 760
1 Stage Manager @ 50 :gc
20 Ballarina @ 300 = 6,000
30 Orchestra @ 200 = 6,000
~6 violinst
~1 base
~3 Flutist
~1 Drums
~3 Violas
~2 Cellos
~6 Horns
~3 Clarinets
~5 Others
Conductor @ 500
30 Choris @ 250
Soprano @ 300
Tenor @ 300
Bass @ 300
Alto @ 300
=====
15,070 Expense Per Performance
PER SERIES
The "Per Series" Expenses are start-up expenses, the training and preparation, coaching and building, that would have to be done per "series" that the Opera Primus puts on. This would cover all recurring fees (assuming 10 lessons/practices, plus dress rehearsal) and construction (sets, stage-pieces, programmes, etc.), and so only those who would not be paid on a per-performance basis will have expenses generated in the Per Series column:
20 Set Builders @ 150 = 3,000
3 Coaches
~1 Ballerina Teacher @ 1,000
~1 Music Teacher @ 1,500
~1 Singing Teacher @ 2,500
1 Scribe (for 5,000 Programmes) @ 500
=====
8,500 Expense Per Series
So, what this tells me is that when you decide to put on a new Opera, it will cost 8,500 to prepare the sets, train your cast and crew, and prepare the Opera for the big day. And then, when the big day comes, it will cost 15,070 to clean the Opera Primus and put on the show for guests.
Revenues
Now we can have fun. Assuming that a typical performance sells at 80% capacity, you -- as the owner of the Opera Primus -- can set seat prices per performance. Earlier, I outlined some of the figures we're dealing with when assuming a 1,000 Grand Auditorium, so if I were to price tickets high at:
1,000 SEATS
~ 300 ORCHESTRA
~ ~ 100 ORCH-FRNTCNTR @ 100 = 10,000
~ ~ 200 ORCH-LEFT and ORCH-RIGHT @ 70 = 14,000
~ 400 MEZZANINE @ 40 = 16,000
~ 300 BALCONY
~ ~ 60 BALC-FRNTCNTR @ 50 = 300
~ ~ 240 BALC-OTHER @ 20 = 4,800
Total Maximum Revenue per Performance = 45,100
Total "Typical" Revenue at 80 Percent = 36,000
Incomes
Using the Balance Sheet Approach, a typical Performance will NET you about 20,000 in raw profit (which you later use to put on new shows). We should also assume that a typical Opera won't play for more than four or five times due to exhaustion of staff, and the demand for something new.
Anyways, that's my first cut at these figures. What do you think?

A couple more notes/thoughts:
-- If we limit the number of performances to five, then a rough calculation shows that (startup expenses being 8,500, and per performance expenses being 15,070 Gold Crowns), a typical "run" would net about 101,530 Gold Crowns as pure profit, if you decided to price the tickets as I suggested.
-- Given the huge profit potential for this place, we would have to track (and post) performances as actual "events" that you could peer-moderate in Aelyria Prime. We might even want to come up with some sort of bonus income potential for when player characters attend these events that you peer moderate, and even more when player characters themselves "star" in the events as people employed by your venture.
Lots of brainstorming potential here. Let me know if you have any thoughts. This is an exciting new addition to Aelyria Prime!

Costs
I am impressed with the numbers. I was working on this, but I am unfamiliar with actual opera's so not sure on prices, these look good to me.
A couple additions I didn't think about.
for each performances
4 Seemstress 20 = 80
Maitance of Cosumes 100
Maintance of Sets 100
*Visiting Stars 300
New Total With out Visiting Star: 15,070 + 280 = 15,350
New Total With Visiting Star: 15,070 + 580 = 15,650
Having been in the orchestra of my high school shows, costums and set need fixing and that was in the High school were their was only one set to store and minimal people. The Visiting star wouldn't occur every show and ever performance, They might be in town for one night, they might be in town for the run of the performance. This would mainly be for any visiting pc who came so we have an established price to pay them.
Start up
10 Seemstress 100 = 1000
Sets 1000
Costumes 2000
Props 500
Gala/Party 2000
New Total 8,500 + 6000 = 14,500
The additional Seemstress are for initual set up. They will help in the get all of the sowing done on the costums and alterations on the old ones, but when the show is done they will be done, so total the show will employ 10 seemstress for start up put only keep four of them for the shows. The price their is just the standing price given for doing all the costums verse the 20 given for the show since thoughts are only fixes.
The Costumes and set can be recycled from other sets, but most of the recycled costums would be your lesser stars, choirs, and ballarinas, were as your big stars would mostly likely needs something new. Also this would cover repair cost to the orchestras suits and the uniforms of the stablehands and footman.
Sets are recycled, but have to buy new paint and wood, and in this cause large canvases.
The Gala or party is for opening night only. So that the stars of the show and the well todo can mingle together. The two thousand will be to get the verity of wines, and champains as well as expensive cheeses on a stick. (Silly people)
Income
Looks good.
One comment. Did we want to add the Boxes. I am thinking like four. Their numbers would be more vague, since as I understand the box is paid for by a party. I would personally not include these in the regular income though. These are recerved for rich PC's who economic, political or even religious clot would suggest they don't sit among the common people. So if I get an income off of the boxs its when a PC specifically purchases the use of one. (No Ghosts allowed) That way the price is more negotable. Also one would be reserved for Atl, and of course the Prince gets first choise. I wouldn't get any additional money off of pc sitting in the regular seats though.
What do you think?
Show times
Five show times sounds good to me. Do we want to have one ever other brightening or up it to six and have three a cycle and then take two cycle off and start a new show. The second opetion makes more sense to me. Have the shows on the second Brightening (Dianara), the fifth Brightening (Aslanica) and the Ninth Brightening (Kuras).
Also The Opera will be closed from Pontius to Melora to prepare for shows and any building maintances. The the "Spring Season" will run from Cryxatum to Ioannes. It will be closed for Imperos for shows and Maintances and opened from Junctior to Immanis for the "Autumn Season."
Events
I am fine and even agree with Peer modding shows and events at the opera. (I do want the Opera house to be used for more then just operas and such. Renting for parties, and possible other pc run events.)
I am also thinking the Opera could offer training in this such as musical instruments, dance, singing, and possible even other crafts. which I could peer mod as the owner to offer pc's a chance to interact with other locations.
Nikki and I are playing around with the opening of the opera for this year being a tribute to the various cultures of Aelyria.
Thats about all I have.

That's true. I think that's good thinking on your part. So, if we assume four boxes, then you can price an entire box however you'd like. One can also assume movable chairs into and out of the boxes; let's say that a box can hold a maximum of 9 people however, and the total cost of a box would be 250 Gold Crowns, sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Would that work?

As for other events, yes, these would have to be moderated/peer-moderated (with modstamp/modplan approval) since they would be one-time special events. Another option, too, is if you decide to hold talent competitions at the Opera, you can make use of the Tournaments tool to track it.

Definitely a possibility. Let's keep in mind, however, that if you decide to employ a non-player character to teach others a certain craft, we'll have to make sure that s/he is being paid an appropriate salary to cover those duties. We should review those as separate business deals / enterprises when the time comes, outside of the scope of the regular functioning of the Opera House, I think.

A good venue in case someone burns the Imperial Senate...
Season tickets and showing Milo off to the people may do wonders for her occupancy.
Good thoughts so far!

That sounds about like what I was thinking. 9 people works, and 250 defently.

To make sure I understand if I do one time events they would have to be the normal moderator or peermoded the with Modplan. For regular show thoughs I can just peermod it as if I was say running a clothing store that I owned or something. I wouldn't need to Modplan it for every show unless I was going to do something different for the show. The question is what would be considered needing a mod plan for the regular shows. I am thinking something odd like, someone tries to rob the audience, or assasinate a pc performer or something. But just regular get togethers were Pc visit and watch the show would be fine.
Also do I need to make each performance and event thread or just do one event thread for each show?

I am thinking some training just comes. Say someone wants to learn singing or dance, they can get hiried and trained with the rest of the new balarinas or chores. But for like instruments I would say that the opera would charge a lesson fee and that would go to the instructor, or if they want to be a solo performer.
I will start working on the Auditorm write up. Also going to include the Gala room and backstage write ups.
My wife wants to work on some posters to post for the shows as well.
Also I need opera show ideas. Thinking a new one write about Julos and Audrey would be good. One about Diana. Others?

We stand ready to underwrite the production of Aslangrad, in the same epic proportion of Les Mis or Dr Zhivago.

OOC: Here is the rest of the write up.
The Auditoriom
The Orchestra
After climbing the stairs from the enterance hall the guest come to a set of doors to the right and a stair case to the left. The doors show the image of a large musical note and an ivy pattern spread around it. The room beyond was large, with a balacony overhanging the upper portions of the seats.
The pillars at the edge of the isle that appeared to help support balacany were delicately carved. Pictures of various fae creatures were carved into the pillars. Reflecting their playful nature.
The main part of the orchestra opened to view at last. The large chandelier lighted the room, its crystals causing and almost enchanted reflection around the room. The Stage, currently curtianed dominated the room. Two Ancient Aelyrians, one male and one female, flanked the stage their bodies facing the audiance but their heads faced the stages, one wing rising above the stage the other rising above the boxes.
The seats were of deep mahogamy with deep purple cusions on both the seat and the back, with two arms to allow the guest to rest their arms during the shows. The rows were neatly organized into simple rows.
The pit itself was a wall infront of the stage, were the conductor can be seen during the show.
The Balacony.
Instead of taking one of the doors to the right one can take the stairs to the left and come to the third floor were you can take either enter one of the doors in front of the stairs or can contiune to the left to one of the boxes. As you step through the doors you find your self looking down on the stage. The crystal chandeller is hanging more at eye level, but you also have a excellent view of the ceiling paintings. Images of Diana, Ioannese, Caramelya and the other gods stretch before you.
The chairs are exactly similar to the ones one the lower levels, but the Pit is harder to see, and the faces of the actors aren't as clear, but you can see all that is going on with the stage, and you can see the faces of the gold covered Aelyrians. In the center of the top of the stage were the artistic wings meet, the image of the three faces of Ioanesse are shown as well.
The Boxes
Recerved for the most elite, these boxes have seated Emperors, and Empress in the past, and hoped to see much more Royalty. The boxes were their own little private haven. A small room, with rich red carpets allow for the company to visit before the show with out having to standing in the halls. a little table has several types of drinks placed ready for the occupants to partake of.
A curtian is all that seperate that room from the viewing area, were chairs have been set out based upon the number of the party, the boxes hold only up to nine people, but they give a clear airial view of the stage, and keep on away from the normal crowd.
The Gala Room
Instead of taking the stairs their was hallway to the left of the stairs it leads to the Gala room. The hallway was large enough for three people to walk abreast The walls was hung with pictures of enchanting seens, from all types of cultures across the empire, for the Opera belongs to no race alone.
The Hall way opened into a large room set aside for parties and gatherings. The roof was made of glass allowing one to look out upon the night sky and see the stars and the moons of Telath.
The walls were made of regualar marble and seemed to reflect in the light given off by dozens of candles, and the room was heated by hidden brazziers placed around the room. Chairs circled the room and a plateform had been placed opposite the enterance to the hall were the musicians would play allowing for dancing, and add to the general noise of the room. One either side of the door were two statues, of half clade humans one male and the other female, and at even intervals around the room, were elves, dwarves, Katta, and the other major races of the kingdom. Currently the room was quiet, but when a Gala was started it could be the life of the city.
