Lindy Ravenswing is an upstanding Citizen
Lindy sat facing forwards, keeping her eyes peeled for the barge or any other signs of imporant information.

At length she said to Werga "Your kinsman is paying me for my work by training me to use my blades. I do not feel that I am earning my payment, sitting here in the bow of the ship as if I were on a pleasure cruise. Perhaps I might take a turn at rowing, and you could watch the horizon for signs of the barge?" Lindy's small experience on a ship had taught her that staring at the horizon was a good way to alleviate seasickness, although she was only prone to it on rough seas.

Werga said to Lindy, "I understand your concern, but the young eyes of the lookout are as valuable as the strong arms of the rowers."

The skiff had only a small amount of water at the bottom and did not appear to be leaking profusely. The smell of the cool salt water indicated the water was newly acquired.

Lindy felt the cool water swish against her feet. The brine was not completely clear. Something small, near her left foot, reflected light from under the foamy water.

"OK," Lindy replied. "But if either of you wish to have a break you should let me know. I am not the delicate flower sort of a girl who cannot tolerated physical labor."

After her previous adventures at sea, Lindy was a little unnerved by the feeling of cold water lapping at her feet. Looking down, she noticed the reflecting object, and bent to examine it at closer range. She extended a finger to poke at it, and perhaps pick it up, should it not prove to be some sort of sea creature with pinchers or stingers.

Lindy's hand circled the glimmer. She was successful on the first attempt. As her fingers felt the object, her mind registered information about the object. It was small, metal, and circular. Her mind's eye imagined a ring. Her sense of touch agreed.

The ring was in her palm. Werga or Salak did not see Lindy's recovery of the object.

Salak is unknown and forgotten
Salak continued to row pulling the oars back grimly, and every so often he would carefully eye thw water lapping at the outside of the boat. He leaned back towards Lindy,
"I'm afraid I am incapeable of allowing you to row in my stead. You see though my arms are yet not wary, even if they were I would not let you row, because you're just a kid to me. You may think us of similar age, yet I in fact have faced 32 winters!"
he grinned.

"That simply means that my arms are 17 winters fresher. Say Werga, is this your boat, or does it belong to your company? I seem to have found a ring and am wondering if it belongs to you."

She picked the ring up and examined it. Her dress lacked pockets so she decided to wear it for safe keeping, although of course she would give it to the rightful owner, should he or she be locatable.

Werga shook his head. "No. This boat is tied to the pier next to where the barge comes in. I don't know its rightful owner, the ring isn't mine. Werga's curiosity got the better of him. He turned to look forward. He asked Lindy, "What does it look like?"

Salak could see the peninsula point fast approaching. Soon they would round the tip and see the western horizon. Steep rocky cliffs rose on the shore to the west. The height seemed to reach to the blue skies above.

Werga turned to look at the ring, but his eyes automatically scanned the horizon. He said, "On the shore, just before my eyes give. Is that a sail?" Salak could see the silhouette of mast and cloth.

Lindy was surprised to learn that they had just taken a rowboat. Were such things allowed? Or were they risking arrest? Perhaps Portshire maintained a fleet of rowboats for public use, but then again Werga had said that he did not know the rightful owner, not that it was a public boat. Oh well, it was a good bit too late to worry about that now. She slipped the ring on her finger and extended her hand for Werga to examine.

When Werga spoke, she turned and looked for the sail he mentioned.

"I believe you're right. Perhaps we should row in that direction, that seems like an unlikely place to land on purpose."

Lindy slipped the ring on her finger. The fit was perfect. The band was plain gold and held no special interest for the dwarf.

Werga rowed harder. He said, "We will approach. Perhaps they are beached on a reef. I would hope it would be nothing more serious than that."

Lindy watched the single-masted sail grow larger. The outline of the barge could be seen. It appeared empty. Nothing indicated movement on the barge except for the bobbing of the boat in the water. Werga said, "I don't see anyone on board. I'm going to row right up to it. Are you armed?"

Lindy watched the barge carefully, trying to discern any movement, either on the barge or in the water nearby.

"I am indeed armed. Do you know how many people left port on the barge? If it's only a few then I am less alarmed that we don't see any of them. At least there doesn't appear to be a pirate ship attached to their broadside."

Lindy undid the buttons of her coat so that she could get at her katars easily, should it come to that.

Salak craned his neck around to see the boat, with indeed no wisible occupants. He squinted into the sun as it reflected off the water. He hauled back on the oar and forced the boat towards the barge.
"Of course, the sun may be blinding our vision of the occupants of said boat."
he added,
"I suppose we shall know at the time when we enter the boat."
he finished.

Soon they arrived and Salak shakily stood up in the boat, he swung his arms once, twice and jumped, latching onto the side of the boat. He climbed up over the railing and drew his long sword cautiously, then glanced back over to the row boat,
"Are you capeable of making it here by your own ability or would you care for assistance?"
he hissed.

OOC: Prays, come ooooon fight with pirates...

Wega thought about Lindy's question. He said, "I think Jarel travels with two companions, probably relatives. The three manage the ore barge easily."

Werga had difficulty rowing with one oar, but he was glad to see both his companions were armed. He should have guessed since they came from Lork.

Werga said to Salak, "You better give a hand to the oars until we close in on the barge. Then I will paddle us in. I have my axe, but my arms will guide us to the barge so we are not surprised."

Werga pulled the oar in thought. He was puzzled by the barge's position. There was no sign of life on deck. Werga told Lindy, "That ring. Plain gold wasn't it? Did you look for an inscription inside?"

Lindy had been distracted by the barge, and had not given the ring a great deal of thought. She pulled it off her finger and examined the inside quickly to see if there was an inscription. Perhaps the owner had put his or her name inside.

She kept one eye open for the barge, in case pirates should suddenly appear on the deck. Not that she would know a pirate if she saw one.

Lindy examined the inside of the ring. Small printing was visible in the suns light. Turning the ring as she read, Lindy felt the words were directed to her. Memories of the past linger among the ruines. The twice destroyed city awaits the return.

As Werga rowed to the barge, he used a quick-free hand to remove his axe from his belt. Lindy could see the single masted boat was beached. The water between the barge and the sand was shallow. Many footprints were visible in the sand. Some were leading away and others toward the ship.

Lindy felt a thrill of excitement rise up her spine. She had thought that the ring was simply a bobble that someone had dropped, but this had the whiff of adventure! She puzzled over what the inscription could mean. It seemed likely that the "twice destroyed city" was Arconis, but even that wasn't entirely for certain, she surely didn't know the history of every city of the realm.

Lindy forced her attention to the problem at hand. She wondered if she ought to call out to the barge, but decided against it. If it were currently inhabited by pirates it didn't make sense to give up the element of surprise, and if there were people in trouble they were already making their best speed to bring help. She got her own weapons ready, just in case.
