48 Melora - Era XIV PF

Tarfuss arrived in the ravaged city and he was dumb struck. He'd never seen anything like it. As he walked through the city he realized that he probably looked much like the city itself did after his trip from Prime. He could feel the dust of the road covering him.

Finding an out of the way spot he took a minute to make himself more presentable to the Provost. Having done that he asked and was directed to the office of the Surveyor-General.

Tarfuss took a deep breath. He had not wanted this. He had, however, over the course of his journey, come to terms with the fact that this was what he'd gotten. He frowned and spit. Maybe he hadn't quite come to terms with it yet after all, but he was working on it. He was a legionnaire and he'd do as he was ordered. He frowned.

Finding the building he went to the appropriate door and knocked. "Shield Deakin Tarfuss, reporting to Provost Elsdragon as ordered."

Keldon was sitting at his desk when the knock outside came and he spoke for them to enter. As Tarfuss entered and stated who he was Keldon made a smirk and started to rise up. "You forgot to come to attention Deakin, and welcome to the pencil pushing capital of the empire." He said with a long pause looking into Tarfuss's eyes.

"So how was the trip to Paxia from Prime?" Keldon asked moving around to a table where several documents where laid out, slowly moving some papers around he moved as he waited for a response.

Tarfuss was at attention, but no matter. He kept his face in the fixed expression of military bearing, eyes fixed 6 inches above the head of the man at the desk. He thought that one day he'd be back in prime and if it was a good day, he'd have the opportunity to stuff a spear up the backside of the whoreson of a Spear Deakin who'd decided that Tarfuss needed a special welcome to Paxia, as if the entire thing wasn't bad enough, humiliating enough, without his help.

"Sir, the trip from Prime was without incident, Sir."

He remained standing, rigid and fixed, expressionless before the Provost seated behind the desk.

Keldon picked up a long square piece of paper and rolled it up, and placed it on the desk then sat down and looked up to Tarfuss. "Now, am I to understand you did not want this posting? You would more inclined to get a combat posting and be off to some war someplace? Or would that be an incorrect statement?" Keldon asked sitting down taking a sip of tea from his cup. His voice was still firm but not harsh. His eyes were locked with Tarfuss's even if the man didn't look directly at him.

Tarfuss looked directly into the Provost's eyes. "Sir. It was my intention to be an infantry man. It was my intention to fight. That's why I joined the Imperial Legions. I don't know anything about the Imperial Board of Works, but the name does not imply fighting. I want to defend the people with my sword and spear." He frowned and paused momentarily. His jaw worked. "I am a Legionnaire, and if is deemed that I will be of most use here, than this is where I will serve and I will do my best in that service."

Nodding his head he smiled. "Understandable, however my staff here at the moment is small. I do not want someone here who does not want to be here to help the people, there are different ways to fight a war Tarfuss. Tell me what did you see when you approached the city? Or should I say the ruined city, what was your impression?" he said with a quickly quirked brow.

Tarfuss raised his own brow. He had seen destruction. "I saw a ravaged city." He wasn't sure how detailed an answer the man was looking for. His brows knitted together. "Sir, what is it that I'd be doing here? I must admit that I'm a bit stymied as to why the Legion would train a man to combat and then have him doing something else. Is there a need for swords and spears here still?" If there was fighting to be done, he would be glad to do it. He didn't know what else they would be expecting him to do. What did the Board of Works DO?

A smirk came over Keldon's face. "Your here by my request Deakin, and your going to be having a relatively wide variety of tasks. However you where brought here specifically from the Jade Legion because the forces here are not trained soldiers. The local guard that is, and I want to bring them upto par with Imperial Standards. I can't do everything myself, although the Minister of War seems to think I can" he said with a pause and opened the parched paper on the table which displayed a map of the city, far different then the ruins now.

Walls were placed around the entire city, along with towers, gates and a large fortress where the rainbow citadel stood, attached to a well fortified harbor. Keldon placed is finger in the second that had a wide vairty of farm space on it. "Your job Tarfuss will be many, however the sole purpose of being a combat orientate trooper will end here. You will become formilliare with the planning of a city and how to defend it. You see Tarfuss this city is going to be fortified, heavily and reinforced greatly in the future. So the question is would you like to march on a battlefield into a war, or build a city for war and stand atop her ready and able to slaughter an attacking enemy?" He said with a wide smirk

"Sir, learning new things is always good. Teaching is always good. Being able to learn and to teach would be a fine thing. As to marching to war or being marched on, I'd have to say I'd prefer to take the fight to the enemies, rather than to have them take it to us. I do, however, realize that that's not always possible. Cities need to be defended and be made defensible." He stopped. He'd never had such an extensive conversation with an officer of the Provost's rank and he wasn't comfortable doing so. He was especially uncomfortable because he sensed the man was toying with him, and had been doing so since he walked in the door.

Stopping for a moment he thought. "Ill be frank you with Tarfuss and let me remind you should these words leave these this tent there will be severe consequences. Paxia is going to turn into a military hub, and given my observations of this region of the empire there is a conflict coming, one which we have not seen in a very long time. I want people who I can trust and have faith in, you have been said to be one of those people. If you are then you will go far in the military. I want you to report to the Marcus Ledorma who will be your superior while helping train the local guard. For the time being that is your assignment until told otherwise. You are not that experienced however there are more things then skills that need to be taught to a military, and fresh recruits can display some of the best traits." he rose from his seat after writing the orders onto a parchment and handed it to him.

"Understood?" he said with a firm voice this time with a deeper tone.

Tarfuss resumed his appreciation of the spot 6 inches above the Provost's head as he spoke. Maybe Paxia and the Board of Works would be interesting. Maybe. Time would tell. Until then he would do his best to help make the Paxian militia and the military units here the best in the Empire.

"Sir, yes Sir!" He barked back to the Provost, and took the parchment from him.

Tarfuss executed an about face and left the room. He found himself out on the street wondering who in the feth the Marcus Ledorma was and where he'd find him. He scratched th e back of his head and looked up into the sunny spring sky. He didn't suppose that he'd find the man up there. He shrugged and walked off to further his search.
