Month of Immanis Spring of Era XIV

Theying was busy planting herbs in the plot of land granted to him by the city. With Adamnen running the store, he didn't have to worry about the face-to-face salesmanship as much. Which as a good thing, he knew he couldn't stay so it would be a bad thing to create ties that would just be severed so soon anyways. Adamnen was the one who was going to stay, so he was the one that should become a part of the community.

He did have some things to worry about. He had promised free herbal training to those who were interested. So far, there had only been a handful of takers, which made Theying corncerned. He thought that it was a very good deal himself. Go figure.

"Well, there's no accounting for taste," the master herbalist mutered to himself. The young man wiped some sweat out of his eyes, still pondering the question. It was good that he was not doing anything time sensitive at the moment. There were some plants that were quite sensitive about not being the top priority, so much so that they may even die to make that point. Theying didn't like working with them, but it was some times unavoidable. At least he would have time to chat, if there was someone to chat with.

Sometime in between Roland's speeches and all the going-ons in Paxia, Adelyn finally had the time to go strolling through her old home, taking in all the wreckage. She glanced at the plants, some crushed, and others in full bloom, on her walk to... well, she didn't really know where she was going. The sun shone brightly overhead, but still a nice breeze blew in the air, keeping the young girl cool. She let out a soft yawn, and covered her mouth with her small, delicate hands.

As she stretched she noticed a young man, likely not much older than herself, tending to some plants. It looked like he was mumbling to himself, but Adelyn didn't expect him to realize she was watching him. She looked on at his work for a few seconds before approaching him.

"Serale! It's a fine day isn't it? May I ask, what is it you are doing?" she smiled kindly at him. Adelyn had of course heard talk of free herbalism training, but she did not associate this man with such lessons as she greeted him. The young beauty suspected an old man taught herbalism in a crowded store, but certainly not the person before her and as such she continued, "It's good to talk to plants, I hear. That's only what I've heard through rumor as I've never tended to any myself."

The wind blew her bangs away from her face revealing enchanting emerald eyes. Her gaze turned to the herbs he was planting. She knelt downward and helped him move the soil, not minding getting her hands dirty in the least.

Theying looked up when addressed. He was quite happy to see a rather pretty woman. He always got along better with women than with men. He always felt that he could relax around them more, which had recently gotten him in quite a bit of trouble for rolling with things instead of really thinking about what he was getting into. But the past was past.

"I heard that plants prefer music to talking," he responded quickly. "But I wouldn't know about that either, as I have virtually no musical talent myself. But if you want instruction on gardening I might be able to help. I am more of a herbalist than a gardener but I am quite willing to help."

Adelyn looked into his eyes curiously, not leaving their sight for a few seconds. She suddenly felt embarrassed for having made a suggestion to the young man, not knowing who he was or what skills he possessed. Her cheeks burned a light pink, but she tried not to openly acknowledge it.

"An herbalist, you say? Would you be that herbalist offering free training that I've so heard about these days in the streets of Paxia?" she asked curiously. It suddenly dawned on her that she had not even introduced herself so she continued in saying, "Oh, and my name is Adelyn Weiss. Pleasure to meet you." She remained close to him, the tips of her hands still somewhat entwined with the soil, realizing she could not shake his hand now.

Theying really didn't mind. He was used to getting questions like that unsolicited. He was toiling at the first business to open in the entire district. This place was still a lone oasis of life among the complete desolation of the Vineyard district. Of course, the last he heard the surrounding plots of land were worth quite a bit more for his presence. Only a lack of people had prevented all of them selling. It was a shame that contrsuction (or reconstruction) hadn't begun on those other plots yet. They master herbalist wanted neigbhors.

"Yes, I am Theying, the herbalist that is offering the lessons," Theying answer. "Pleased to meet you, Adelyn." He gave the abbreviated Jaedaxine bow of formal greeting, which worked even though he wasn't currently standing. He didn't look Jaedaxine, but it had become an adoptive home for him.

"Oh, are you interested in the training?" Theying inquired, he did have time at the moment.

The herbalist bowed in greeting in a form Adelyn was not accustomed to, so she assumed he was new to Paxia having traveled from some other land. She clapped her hands together to wipe away left-over soil. She nodded happily, a bit enthusiastic to learn any new skill she could, "Actually I am very much interested in learning some Herbalism, if you have the time."

The vineyards looked empty, as in devoid of any other people, giving Adelyn the feeling of loneliness and abandonment. It struck a chord seeing the area look like a part of the country instead of a bustling city full of commerce and life. She could imagine the women picking grapes and dancing around merrily under the sun. A small smile crossed her lips at her imagination. She blinked a few times rapidly and focused again on Theying.

"Would you be available to start today, perhaps?" Adelyn requested shyly, knowing she was busy with Roland later to start another day.

A smile crossed her lips, and Theying was reminded once again that he didn't understand the hearts and minds of women. Still, he hoped that the smile was indicitive of a good thing. He liked making poeple, particularly women, happy.

"Sure, I have time," the master herbalist replied. "I can start right now, if it's alright with you. Although I would like to ask that you get a couple of books to continue your study later."

"Splendid! I am not doing any today, so we can feel free to spend all our time together," she laughed softly, knowing full well she was joking around with him, but she felt particularly light-hearted today. She nodded at the mention of books, agreeing to look into them to continue her studies later.

Adelyn had never taken any sort of lessons on plants, nor did she know his style so she wondered if his lesson would be hands-on, or just a lecture, both of which she had experienced in Schola not so long ago. "How do we begin, Theying?"

[Theying]

"First off, I need to know how you intend to use herbalism," Theying said simply. "There are many things that can be taught, and many things that you would probably not find useful in the slightest. If I knew what you wanted out of herbalism I could show you just that."

There was way too much to teach everything. But he could provide her the chance to get what she wanted the most out of things. Though, he might just extend his lessons for a better chance to be around her. He had been missing female companionship since he left home.

She bit her lower lip and made a small humming sound before answering, "That's a very good question. I am particularly interested in the healing aspects of herbalism as that is what I would find most useful not only for myself, but for my adventuring family!"

Herbal healing would definitely come to good use if in case any members of House Moonstar would get hurt. She began to wonder if Theying knew any other members of her family considering he was offering free training and it seemed unlikely that they would refuse training of any sort, knowing them.

"What other types of herbalism are there? Though I am sure I am interested in healing herbalism, what else is there to learn?" she asked, truly curious.

[Theying]

Theying shrugged, healing herbalism was quite useful in many situations but there were other varieties that were just as useful to adventurers. There were many ways to do thing, particularly in herbalism. Theying did not pretend to know all of them.

"Well," Theying began to answer. "If you're interested in adventuring then there are always herbal poisons and sedative, many of which are non-lethal. If that isn't your style then there are a number of herbs that enhanse various aspects of your person like eyesight, strength, and speed that are perfectly fine to use on yourself on occasion, or provide to allies. For less trouble-oriented uses there are the cosmetic herbs, and even the odd aphrodisiac that can lead to success in politics or even love. If it happens within you, there is a sphere of herbalism that applies. I even have come across undead repellant in my travels."

It was important to establish which field she wanted to learn early on. The more focused the study the better she could get faster. Theying had taken a broad path, which meant it took him almost three times longer to get good than some of his original classmates, but he had continued to work to improve, and was still doing so even now. Adelyn probably wasn't interested in devoting a month to really going in depth to the entirety of herbal lore.

As Theying began listing the types of herbalism available Adelyn's eyes widened in surprise and great interest, "Is it silly of me to want to learn them all? Theying, I can't believe it, but your area of study really does interest me. I suppose for the time being I should focus and stop being so naive; I can't learn everything, though I am very eager."

The beautiful girl forgot all about trying to be polite in her excitement, "You must teach me all you know! This is not the response you were looking for, but if I must choose I would say herbs that enhance a person's skills really do interest me as well as healing." The girl stopped herself, realizing how great a request she was asking of him already. His lessons were free, true, but he had things to attend to, and she could not abuse of his kindness.

Her emerald eyes gazed warmly into his hazel eyes and she paused momentarily trying to come up with a decision, knowing she had spoken too soon. Adelyn stood up from her position and walked one step away from him, still in thought. If anything, Adelyn needed to learn to heal people that were hurt in Paxia considering all hospitals had been destroyed.

"While those enhancing herbs sound appealing and of great interest to me, I have to think of the greater good and that means learning to heal wounds, for example. I do apologize for me rushing into my enthusiasm!" Adelyn was secretly thinking of the last herbs Theying had mentioned as she had never known there could be success in love with the use of herbs. She blushed and gave a sideways glance at the young man in front of her. Her hands immediately went up to her cheeks to hide the pink.

Theying shook his head, remembering how it was like for him when he discovered that there was more to herbalism than healing. He had mostly groaned and complained about the additional work, but it had really grown on him. He was fascinated, really fascinated, by the sheer variety of herbs out there.

"It's alright," Theying replied. "I can start with the simple healing stuff, and you can stop buy and read Theraz's Herb Guide and The Olde List when ever you want. That way you can learn more about herbs that you want. There are even herbs that enhanse the likelyhood of pregnancy in there, for couples who are unlikely to have children any other way, such things can be quite useful in a hospital I hear."

With a small sigh of relief Adelyn agreed wholeheartedly, "Then yes let's focus on simple healing. Should I want to continue my studies I will gladly look into it myself, Theying."

The girl understood a fascination, such as the one she had just taken with herbalism would need exploring in her own time, and when Paxia was not so in desperate need of immediate assistance. Though Theying suggested a book, finding it would be rather difficult, so she made a mental note to remember to stop by a bookstore when next she visited Nexus Prime.

Still, Adelyn stood next to his seated body, feeling it strange to tower over someone for once as the girl was rather short at only 5'2". She rocked back and forth on the tips of her shoes, eager to get started right away so both she and Theying could continue on with their daily chores.

OOC: I got off 4 12-hr shifts in a row, and I'm faced with 21 threads that need a reply. Let's see how I go.

IC:
Theying reached into one of his plethora of pockets. He pulled out a hard nut, it was a brown ovoid and rather unremarkable. He offered it to her.

"Before we continue," Theying commented. "This is a Spikewort seed I strongly recommend that you carry some. It is very useful as a pain reliever that doesn't cloud the mind. Remember, it doesn't fix whatever caused pain, so if the source of the pain was causing harm then it would still be doing so after this is administered."
