Goodbye Moonmen [Pescado]

The saurid would awaken in darkness, and entirely alone.

No gears. No wires. No metal plates. Most definitely no Shei'yein Neydremi. Only the aches and pains of a truly terrible day to inform Pescado that the strange events he recalled had indeed actually happened, and were not just a phantasm of his own mind. Well... there was the pain, and what smelled like dried blood on his claws. A reminder that someone else had had a pretty bad day up there, too.

Up there? Yes. As Pescado's eyes adjusted to the gloom, he would realize that he was lying in what appeared to be a large cavern. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, given that his final waking memories had been of being dragged down beneath the surface of the moon. Nothing but vast stretches of space in all directions, interspersed with strange pillars of stone. It was as if he had been transported to the middle of a dark forest of rock beneath the ground.

After a long while, Pescado would find the strength to stand. And then what?

Kill... kill... kill...

The words still resonated through his mind as he awoke, the pain and suffering that had inhibited him, and forced him to assail his very ally, and kill the creature of the moon. Slightly allowing his eyes to shift upwards, the saurid looked up towards the ceiling of the room he had been in. It seemed he wasn't mortally injured, at least from what he could tell, and he wasn't dead, or so it seemed. Pain that much stroked through his body to remind him of that, the pain of memory, and the smell of dried blood upon his talons. Turning his eyes back towards the ground, the saurid would try to use what little Vis he might have left or regained from when the entity took his mind over from the Xetan Capitol to try to expand a field of Sentinel around his surroundings, and see exactly where it was he was, or if he could sense anything in particular that might assist him in getting out of wherever it was that he happened to be at, beneath the surface of the moon.

As he expanded the field of Sentinel Pescado would make sure to survey every little detail that could come to mind of his surroundings. It seemed as though he was in a stranger area than had been the moon's surface, the smell of stone all around him, permeated by the blood upon his claws. What had he done through the will of that other entity? he thought, looking down towards the ground as he slowly stood up and continued to survey his surroundings...

Whatever had happened, and however long he had been unconscious, it seemed that Pescado had recovered the entirety of his Vis reserves. And so he carefully kindled a spell in his mind and slowly extended it outwards. Initiate level? The Sentinel spell revealed very little, of course. Moonrocks of strange and alien composition. More and more rock overhead. No sign of the surface anywhere close, but then, an Initiate-level Sentinel field only extended about ten feet upwards.

Journeyman level? The Sentinel field could extend further, depending on exactly how Pescado calibrated it, and what he was looking for. Arcana? None that was active, as far as he could detect. Sentient minds? None within range. Physical objects? Yes, well, now he could 'see' quite well with his mind, to a range of between ten and fifteen feet in total. The only thing of any interest near him were some footprints that seemed to have belonged to a creature like the one that he had been mysteriously compelled to kill not long ago. What he saw with his power and his physical eyes seemed to indicate that the being had taken one look at Pescado, and just hurried right on back into the darkness.

Adept level? No... maybe not. The moment Pescado began drawing that much power he felt... well. Something wrong. Something chewing on the very edges of his perception, a bit like some psionic entity actually feeding on his mind, but more like the grinding teeth of gears somehow getting snagged on his very thoughts. He could see, dimly, vast, cold machines in the distant darkness. Not physical machines, though. Just some sort of mirage or something. Should he keep trying to draw on Vis at this level, the images would grow clearer, but worse. More threatening. More painful to his mind. And a single word would echo in his thoughts:

KILL.

OOC: Trying this once again. No computer, so I'm writing with an iPad.

Kill.

As soon as the thought began resonating within the Saurid's mind, Pescado stopped drawing the vis to increase the Sentinel spell's power beyond that of a journeymans level. He hoped that he had ceased the drawing of the vis quick enough to alleviate the gear grinding thoughts that had suddenly started to plague his mind once more. If he had managed to do just that, he would try to regain some semblance of control over his own mind, before using the journeyman level spell to help guide him after the footprints that he noticed were walking in the opposite direction of where he had landed.

And thus he would start his trek through the darkened cave using the journeyman sentinel spell to hopefully guide him at least short term to some light source within the caverns or some variety of a way out of the caverns he was currently stuck within, due to the strange metallic machine that had dragged him down deep under the surface of one of Telath's moons...

oocYeah, trying to get back into this one, myself. I'm still around though. Let's give it a whirl.

As Pescado's power receded, so did the visions. The thunder of massive gears grinding in his head faded to a distant rumble and then disappeared entirely. The urge to kill was fading, too. Soon enough the Saurid had composed himself to the extent that he was able to concentrate on following the dim trail before him.

It would have been impossible if not for his Mysticism. The light in this subterranean lunar cavern was dim almost to the point of nonexistence. Where was it coming from at all? Well, the rock seemed to be very slightly reflecting the light of something. Almost like how the moon itself reflected the light of the suns. Moonlight inside the moon? Profound.

Eventually Pescado would come to a crossroads of a sort. Not a literal road-- the layout of the seemingly endless cavern remained roughly the same as ever. But the footprints his Sentinel weave were detecting seemed much fresher now, as if the one who had left them had been here only recently. It seemed that the Saurid was catching up. If he really strained his senses, he even thought he could hear something skittering along the rock far ahead, as if the mystery moon man would have been just about within sight, if there was only more light to see by.

Speaking of which, the light seemed to be getting somewhat stronger... but in the exact opposite direction from which the footprints were headed. Off that other way, there appeared to be a sizeable source of light in the far distance. Something like a field of stars on the cavern ceiling and floor, though it was impossible to make out any details.

So which way?

Light was always a good thing. It seemed that the creature had gone in the opposite direction though. Pescado stood there amidst the dark for a few minutes prior to deciding which way he should go. Towards the dimly lit area of the cavern and away from the creature that he probably wouldn’t be able to communicate with anyways. As the Saudi’s made his way towards the area that looked like perhaps a starry sky, he wondered if he’d ever be able to use anything more than an apprentices worth of vis, lest he end up going on a murderous rampage again. Hopefully this problem was a temporary one, and not one that would persist for the remainder of his life...

And so Pescado walked into the light.

It turned out to be a good news, bad news sort of situation. The bad news was, what he found was definitely not a way out. There was the faintest series of cracks along the roof of the cavern, from which drizzled a faint trickle of water. The slight shower of drops then gathered in a shallow pool of water on the cavern floor, about ten feet around and only a few inches deep. The light turned out to be coming from a multitude of luminescent blue mushrooms growing in a circle around the borders of the pool on the cavern floor, and also in another circle around that series of cracks in the cieling up above. Together their light was enough to approximate the effect of a bonfire.

The good news was... well, that basically was also the good news. Pescado had found a pool of clean(?) water, and a bunch of glowing mushrooms that could possibly double as torches. Beyond that, though, there was basically nothing else there.

More circles of light glowed off in the distance further ahead. At least three, all rather far apart from one another. From afar, none of them really looked any different from the light that had lead Pescado to this little mushroom pool, but of course one never knew. Though he could also double back and follow that trail of footprints after all.

As Pescado approached the circle of glowing mushrooms, he thought for a moment before taking a piece of torn clothing from under his leather armor and slowly picking out a mushroom or two with the torn clothing. He didn't want to directly touch the mushrooms in case they were poisonous and got in between his scales or something else that could poison him. After picking one out with the cloth, he decided to inspect the other circles just to be sure none of them would lead to an exit.

If that was the case, he'd soon enough turn around and use the glow of the light from the mushrooms to follow the trail of footprints behind him...

The other nearby pools of light proved to be mostly the same as the first. Just big circles of glowing mushrooms on the cave floor and cave ceiling. None of them offered any hope in the way out. Still, there were a few more signs of lunar life about here. One very large cave pool was populated by small, eyeless fish. Not blind, though, apparently, because they darted away the moment Pescado's shadow fell over them. One of the pools even had what seemed to be a moon-person's abandoned tool or weapon on the ground. It looked kind of like a spear, its handle crafted from some unidentifiable wood-like substance and with a crescent shaped blade on one end, prongs facing outward.

The mushrooms were squishy in Pescado's hand, feeling almost gelatinous even through the protective cloth. They soon secreted weird mushroom gunk all over his hand despite the protective wrapping, but that was fine, because it didn't have any affect on him after all. And they just kept glowing and glowing. Would they ever stop? Difficult to say. At least they were able to light his way through the darkness, albeit dimly, as Pescado doubled back to rediscover the trail he had been following a while before.

The trail went on, eventually leading through more mushroom pools far off in the other direction. Pescado even discovered what looked like it might have been an abandoned camp site. Strange bones and other debris. Even what might have been a pile of moon man poo, discretely placed behind a stalagmite away from the main camp. Had that much time passed already? It seemed that it had. Pescado found himself hungry, thirsty, and tired. Exhausted, really. Of course, if the moon man had stopped to rest and Pescado had not, this might be his chance to catch up before very much longer. If catching up was even the goal. Beyond that, the only really good news was that the unknown moon man's trail lead in a relatively straight line. It seemed like a good bet that he knew where he was going, even if Pescado didn't.
