In the lower city just southeast of the Aslan spire sits a smaller but bustling spire completely in descript except for the gray columns that run up each side of the main front entrance. It is the only privately owned spire in the whole city and nearly all of the residents of Orckon have visited this spire at one time or another in their lifetime. It is owned by the Gothmog Pun (Task Master) named Ghlak.
Contrary to the outer bland appeal, the work crew spire is no place to play around. Many unfortunates have been worked to death by this machine as it is oiled by the blood and sweat of slave labor. Inside you see goblins and orc alike with varying other races moving here and there carrying out all sorts of menial tasks. They are the administrative assembly line that keeps the workers flowing to all the parts of the city needing fresh backs to break.
As you make your way into the ever darkening spire, you can’t help but feel that you are falling down some hole you may not be able to scramble back out of. Old wooden furniture, no doubt taken from human homes during raids, lines the hallways that honeycomb the spire. One staircase leads left, another one right. Some go up, and some go down or around a dark corner. Open caverns without doors act as offices and give you quick glimpses of the goings-on inside.
You stand by waiting your turn to be seen. You watch as all of the people that are currently in the spire as possible employees are being herded into the rooms where they are interrogated (their form of job interviewing) before hustling their new workers off to some location who knows where. The ones that are deemed not worthy of a better task are sent down to a large cavern to the right side of the spire. In this place, they are huddled together with other races, some in chains, and then man-handled in groups of 3 or 4 and sometimes in greater numbers out a long corridor that leads out a side entrance. Once they reach the end of this corridor, they are met by one of the Gothmog Pun’s goons and led off to do some dirty back breaking task.
Realizing what is going on, your heart begins to beat faster as one that has finally realized a possible danger in coming here. It is too late now. One of the administrative types, a healthy looking female orc approaches you and without speaking, motions for you to follow. She leads on down the winding halls and points to a room straight ahead. She then vanishes into a room nearby.
“Come, come in!” a voice says in a deceitfully pleasant voice.
You enter the room. It is larger than the others you have seen to this point and at the far end toward the back you see a wood desk with a shirt, fat orc leaning back in a chair smiling. He pauses a minute to check you out from head to toe then looks farther behind you.
“Ju hab no guards so thinks ju not prisoner. Not matter, hab jus da ting for ju!“
Ghlak does technically serve the government by overseeing the work crews of the city but this shrewd orc is a business man. He makes his profits from providing labor for the city. That is why there is no such thing as unemployable in Orckon. There is always something the great Task Master can find for you to do. The problem is how long can your body hold the jobs he gives you.
“Now tell Ghlak, wud ju hab for skills? Ju hab any? Of course ju hab skills! All here hab them jus some not as many as others.” He says in a humorous tone.
Before you speak, you look around at the goons in the room. None of them seem to be enjoying their job except the one short, fat, and smiling orc sitting in front of you.
