The Beginning of a Journey (Faust)

It was several brightenings after her initial lessons with Faust that the half elf had returned to the manor. It was a chilly and early morning, and Rhystlin had enjoyed the view of the suns lumbering sleepily above the horizon as she made her way through the residential district. The world of Nexus Prime was bathed in a deep and orange glow for but a brief period of time, the haze of chimney smoke stretching as though the homes were waking from a slumber. The mountains of Arium were snow-capped and cast in the colors of this morning greeting, ever still and infinite in their vigil over the world below.

For a moment Rhystlin was overcome with a sense of true appreciation for this place, knowing it would always be considered her home. Here was where she had ran through puddles in the streets, where she had first felt the tenderness of a father, where she had learned to wield a sword... where the first inklings of love and grief and passion had found her heart. Here, in these mountains of Arium, is where a half elven girl with dreams and opinions had been born. And here is where her journey had only just begun.

Her steps had carried her through the waking city from Windsteed Farm. She had let Orwell know she would be leaving the city soon. She had been disappointed to part with the man who had taught her how to ride, but she knew with great certainty who she would purchase her own horse from, when she could afford it. She wasn't sure why everything felt like such a goodbye; after all, it was not as though she was leaving forever.

She was not sure if the guards who stood vigil over the Vysstichi lord's home would recognize her - or if they were even the same ones as she had encountered the last time she was there - but just in case, she proudly exhibited her dragonlich pin at her cloak breast. She showed it to the guards as she approached the gate and dipped her head in respect to them. Her eyes shifted back to the last traces of the suns' deep smolder as they settled above the mountain peaks. Then, with a deep breath of the chilly mountain air, she turned back to the men before her.

"Pardon the intrusion, but I was seeking an audience with Lord Kitrye'veresi," she said, not really sure how to address the lord before his men. "Is he available at this time?"

It was not long after Rhystlin’s arrival that she was permitted entry into the sprawling estate. The guards shifted aside after opening the gates, one of them waving the half-elf forward, where a middle-aged attendant with ebon skin and snow-colored hair waited attentively. He wore black robes that nearly trailed to the ground when he walked. “His Grace is in his study,” the Vysstichi replied in a deep voice. “I will take you to him.” Nothing more was said before the man turned and led Rhystlin towards the manor.

When Rhystlin arrived, Faust was seated in his office behind a large mahogany desk. A pair of white candles sat on the front corners, their fires dancing casually from the wicks and providing some illumination for the room. The drapes had been pulled, though, allowing the afternoon sunlight to filter through the panes and decorate the interior with a warm, pleasant glow.

Rhystlin,” the Baron of Vortex greeted when the young woman arrived. He stood courteously and then gestured towards one of the two empty seats on the opposite side of his desk. “Please, sit,” he said, and he waited for his student to do so before returning to his armchair. “I was not expecting you today. Did you eat yet?

He did not wait for her response before turning to the attendant who had escorted Rhystlin to his study. “Bring some refreshments for us, will you?” He shot an appreciative nod to the man before refocusing on the young woman.

So, what brings you here today, Rhystlin?

Rhys followed the obvious path that led to the estate, and then the attendant who ushered her through to the Baron's study. It seemed silent in this place, perhaps because it was not a temporary residence for the lord, and the noises of her movements became a source of self awareness; the sound of her boots was soft against the elegant floors of the building, the gentle tap of her sword sheath obvious and rhythmic against her hip.

As she entered the study, the half elf stood upright with her hands behind her back, hoping she had not managed to disturb the man in a moment of heavy thought. She waited until he addressed her and dipped her head to him, only entering the room further when he offered a seat to her. As she settled herself she attempted to answer the first question he posed to her, but he had already changed the subject so she remained silent for a moment more. Then, when he turned back to her, she smiled, although the look in her eyes was more of an apology than one of humor.

"I don't intend to take too much of your time, Milord, it's just that I felt there were a few things I should address with you before I leave the city." It was still awkward to call him "Faust". She hoped her continuous lapses into formally did not bother him too much.

She paused a moment, unsure how to begin.

"I've been thinking. I feel that there's a way the goals I've had in mind can be of benefit to you as well. I know it may seem ambitious, but... you said to me that you'd like to 'test the waters' when we last parted ways. And I believe I have an idea of how I'd like to go about doing that."

If he did not stop her, and had the time to hear her out, she would continue. "I am very interested in starting a mercenary company. Now - before you think that I am getting ahead of myself, I want to make it clear that I have no intention of pressing my luck in the already gracious relationship you've extended to me. But I feel as though my broad plans for this company would work very well, should it be tied to your house... and in return, I feel that the benefits to you could be worth your while."

In all honesty, there were other reasons she wanted this venture to be tied with Faust. She had all the faith in Telath that his causes were good ones, as he had demonstrated his character time and time again in his prior deeds and actions. She knew that she did not want this company to be a simple one, tied to mindless contracts with no allegiance to a greater cause. She wanted - dared to hope - that in an alliance with the man before her, the fruit of her efforts would result in the ripples of change that would benefit this world.

"It would be small to begin with. Just a band of men or women, specialized in what they do. First and foremost, the company's duty would be to you, politically and militarily, and with luck, its collective skill would make it efficient as a task force; a unit that could go where your troops may not be able to. In a number of ways, it could be faster and more efficient than standard military forces, or hopefully with time - able to command a branch them if necessary.

"But in times that you do not need it, it would be a source of income. It would take contracts, so long as they do not interfere with the goals of your House, and coin that isn't expended on rations, paying the men, and - if you have no wish to outfit it - armor and weapons - would fill your coffers."

She was silent a moment, hoping that so far she hadn't lost the baron's interest. It was entirely possible that he already had such an arrangement at his disposal.... She did not know how the mercenary company in Vortex operated. She frowned, trying to dredge up any other relevant information that would be of concern to him.

"Through Myach, I have the wisdom and experience of a man who has worked in this sort of business for many years. He can help me with what I need to get things started, get it headquartered. If I can get this company up and running and generating a profit, then I hope that I can prove to you that I am capable of making this what I want it to be - what it could be. That our relationship could be mutually beneficial.

"All that I ask is that your offer of the use of your resources in Arium remain extended to me, even in knowing that the possibility of my failure exists. I acknowledge that I may not be the most impressive of your charges, but I guarantee that with time and support... I could be.

Her expression was one of concrete sincerity. She truly believed what she said.

No, take as much time as you need,” Faust insisted, dropping the quill pen in his grasp onto the table as he reclined attentively in his chair. He balanced his elbows on its armrests and then folded his hands reflectively in front of him. If truth be told, he had not expected to see Rhystlin so soon after their initial encounter, but he was not displeased that she had returned to discuss the details of their previous arrangement.

It showed initiative on her part, another sign that the Vysstichi Lord had made a wise decision in selecting her for his appointed task.

He listened closely as she outlined her ambitious plan, one that entailed establishing a multi-purpose mercenary company that would both advance the aims of his House while generating income during the off-seasons to remain a self-sufficient business enterprise. Indeed, her aspiration was not a small one, and it would require plenty of resources, especially money, manpower, and connections, to transform it into a sustainable reality.

The dark elf nearly chuckled, and it was not because he believed her idea to be absurd.

In his younger years, perhaps, he would have leapt at such an opportunity to join her in her venture. To travel the world alongside reliable comrades in search of fame and fortune was a dream that many soldiers entertained. In fact, he had spent the earliest eras of his life selling his sword to the highest bidders, an occupation that had brought him to many fascinating places like Zinn’Sunn and Imperia. Truly, he envied her.

How he wished that he could experience the thrills of his youth again . . .

After a long moment, he finally undid his intertwined fingers and leaned forward, resting his forearms on the expensive desk before him. His crimson gaze moved towards hers. “You remind me of myself,” he admitted, “although I don’t think I was nearly as imaginative at your age.” This time, Faust chuckled.

You’re thinking like a leader,” he continued, “and that’s not something that can be taught. Know that I would have not asked you to do this had I not believed in you. From the first time we met, I saw potential in you. I still see it now.” Gods, even though he was little more than a century old, he felt like he had lived several lifetimes already. The horrors of war had not been without a grave effect upon him.

I like what I’m hearing, and I like even more the fact that it’s clear that you have a plan in mind.” He nodded approvingly. That Rhystlin had referenced Myach's prospective support was proof enough that she had considered her proposal thoroughly. “In order for you to succeed, you’ll need a base first and foremost, one that is large enough for a training facility and barracks to house your company as well. Did you have a location in mind? If not, I might have a few suggestions.

Rhys was both surprised and relieved that the Baron was not laughing at her. The solemnity with which he treated her aspirations was something that heightened her respect for him. He was the second individual to display such a concrete sense of faith in her that he seemed to stand behind her in the choices she made. With all that he had accomplished, such faith meant a great deal to her, and hardened her resolve to ensure it was not misplaced.

She could not help but feel a sense of pride, as well, that he would compare her to himself, of all people. At the same time, she felt he cast a great shadow she could not hope to fill. But she supposed she was not looking to fill shadows. To think that he felt some sense of kinship in the traits she exhibited was enough in itself to make her smile. It was odd, but she could almost see her adoptive father seated in the chair before her, saying the same things the baron just had. Although she wouldn't trade the world for the time she had spent with Myach, she was briefly envious of any children the baron might have had. What luck, had they, to be born to a father such as himself? If only she had been so lucky, instead of having been abandoned by a weaker man instead.

"I had considered that," she responded of the base she would need. "At first I thought perhaps Arium would be best, given the close proximity to your own holdings. I had not settled on an exact location, however. I would be glad to hear your suggestions."

She had already had the discussion with Myach, and he had at length agreed that he would help her with managing the property, assets, and coin. Her motives for asking for his assistance were mostly to keep him near her shoulder, as she knew that his advice would be invaluable to her through the journey she had just begun. She trusted him more than any man she could have hired blindly, and she knew him to be a humble, grounded, no-nonsense individual with a great deal to contribute.

Arium would be ideal,” he replied, “considering that most of my power base lies within the province. If you desire a safe and secure location, Vortex would be your wisest choice. Our weapons and armor forges are located there, and the Black Legion, of course, is stationed nearby in Har’oloth. There is also a place in the city known as the Fitness and Bones Training Center, which is operated by my House. If you’d like, I can open its doors to your prospective recruits to jumpstart their training.

Even though his initial suggestion might have sounded quite appealing, the reservation in his tone betrayed that he had another idea in mind. This much was confirmed seconds later when a slight smile curled along the edges of his mouth.

There are two other possibilities though,” he continued. “Not too long ago, I reclaimed the town of Dasmia from the Xet. Most of it was destroyed, but my people have spent the last several seasons rebuilding it. I haven’t had an opportunity to return lately, but I’ve been informed that it has made significant progress. The town once thrived because of its access to the famous Storellian mines. Dasmia, in case you didn’t know, is where we get the famous Dasmian ore that blacksmiths covet for weapons and armor. If you’d like, I can grant you access to Dasmia to inhabit as you will and to set up your mercenary company there. There is plenty of room for training, and it would definitely provide you with a good deal of privacy.

The last option is a conveniently-located village called Mileswick. Before the Xet ransacked it, Mileswick was a successful farming town. I’ve been meaning to send soldiers there to rebuild its infrastructure, but if that’s a task that you’d like, I would be most appreciative. Arium does not have much in the ways of good farmland, so I’m sure it’s not difficult to imagine why I would like to rebuild Mileswick. Like Dasmia, it would serve as a fine location to operate out of, but unlike Vortex and Dasmia, it might take you a little longer to do so due to its current state.

Rhystlin nodded her head at the options. The mention of Vortex's many benefits did make it sound as though it would be the obvious choice, but the obvious choice for her, perhaps. She would be able to train any of her soldiers much more quickly there than at the other two locations, but at the same time the location would hold no true advantage to Faust's immediate pursuits. Should she choose Mileswick or Dasmia, however, she would be able to grow her company while accomplishing Faust's goals at the same time. The real choice, then, was not the obvious one.

Dasmia and its ore were tempting. The township was further south in Arium, she recalled, nestled near - or maybe even within - the Great Mountains. It seemed to be a little of both worlds; solitude and space, the ability to assist in the village's growth, but already moving towards the plans Faust had set for it.

It seemed that getting Mileswick up and operational held benefits for everyone. It was true that Arium lacked for farmland; not only were the Arium Highlands sparse in vegetation and harsh of weather, but the rocky soil did not provide the best conditions for farming. Nexus Prime and surrounding areas would do well to see the town back up and running. As thrilling as it might have seemed to operate out of a farming village, Mileswick was a simple ride from Nexus Prime. Ready access to the resources in the city was a plus, and would make it easy to move or extend her operation to the city once it had room to grow.

"If you need soldiers in Mileswick, then the choice is obvious. Let the recruits I bring in be put to use as we grow. If the men under my command aren't willing to do a little humble labor when they're not taking contracts, then perhaps they're not the men I'm looking for." She smiled. "We'll be soldiers at heart, and so I want men who think with a cause. For that, we need to have one. So Mileswick will be it."

To begin with, anyway. It was a stepping stone, but an important one.

Its settled then, Faust said when Rhystlin announced her decision. Although he had suspected that the young woman would choose Mileswick, he could not hide his pleasant surprise when she volunteered her future mercenary company for the ambitious task of rebuilding the ruined town. It was, perhaps, a little bit nave on her part to believe that her hired soldiers would be competent at building and farming, but the dark elf was more impressed with the quality of the heart that had made the suggestion in the first place.

He smiled.

You wont be alone, he said with a chuckle. As soon as you secure Mileswick, Ill send in the guilds from Nexus Prime to spearhead the reconstruction efforts. The town will certainly need to be guarded during that time, which, I imagine, will be more than a perfect assignment for you.

With a satisfied sigh, the dark elf leaned back in his chair again and folded his hands in front of him. Take whatever horses and equipment you need from this place in preparation of your venture. I dont expect that there will be much resistance, but theres no telling whenever the Xet are concerned.

The baron was correct in his assumption of the half elf's naivete and idealism, and she was likely to encounter that obstacle soon enough when the reality of command would hit her. For now she nodded her head, willing to assume the duties the dark elf was placing on her with open arms. Whether she would struggle with this in time was yet to be seen.

At this point she thanked him and stood. She was unwilling to consume too much more of his time unless he should have more questions for her. She was grateful to know that the horses and equipment were available for her use, given that such possessions might be difficult for her at her current level of income.

"I suppose I should let Myach know where we're at, then. I'll see about gathering a party to secure the town to begin with. I'll be sure to update you as things progress. Was there anything else you may need from me before I finally head out?"

She had been nervous about this conversation at first, but in the end was glad to have decided upon it. The discussion had produced results better than she could have initially hoped for.

He rose to his feet as she prepared to leave, a pleasant smile dressing his onyx face. “No. I’m sure there is plenty that you need to do before heading out,” Faust said. “If you run into any problems, be sure to let me know immediately. I’d be glad to see if we can work something out or discuss any possible solutions.

He moved from around the desk and walked Rhystlin to the door. “I wish you the best of luck. Be careful out there.
