Once More at the End of the World [Private]

Summer XX PF

A shining bastion of civilization that had once been situated near the heart of the empire, Nexus Prime stood now as its foremost defender and the home to the thousands that had survived the exodus from the lands lost to the west. Her walls had never been designed to support so many, the districts beyond the protection of the granite and stone fortifications had swelled past her original limits and traffic was such that people could no longer navigate the streets carelessly or loiter where once beggars might have been entertained.

Still, it was a better alternative than the wilds for those without the skills survive nature. At the very least together, they could fend off many dangers that they might otherwise be unable to... but soon they would have to leave. Nexus Prime could not support this population for much longer, already plans were being laid out to have these people relocated to fresh settlements in the backwater villages that needed workers.

But that was not Charlotte's problem, not yet. With the defenses prepared as much as practicable she now saw to her secondary mission, to keep the peace. But that was much harder than it seemed. Desperation could drive a man to do many wicked things and these were dark times. Such dealings and mischief were common now, thieves and murderers were amok in all districts and it seemed the trend would not end anytime soon.

But still her vigil continued, though it was already late into the night this half-elf scoured the streets. A lantern hanging upon the small buckler in her left hand provided crude illumination as she patrolled the streets. Though she meant them no real harm some people shied away from her passing, her armor and the sword hanging sheathed upon her hip betraying her station as an enforcer of the law rather than one who kept it.

A cloaked figure walked the streets alone, it was calming to walk at night and even though he enjoyed getting lost in his thoughts it was occasionally difficult here. So many people in this city, too many perhaps. He could feel their worries, as well as the approaching disaster that loomed just beyond there walls. No work, money, food, safety, shelter... the list of fears that weighted on the minds of it's citizens went on and on. They were right... If his home didn't stand much of a chance, it would not be soon before they too were destroyed.

It was a conflicting thought, he wasn't sure what to think about it. On one hand it went to serve a purpose that was in line with something that he wanted; not their destruction... not really... but on the other hand, it was an act done by the Xet in reality, something that he felt moved counter to the things that his family would have. Yet, at the moment, he still had little way to be sure.

It wasn't as if he could just go visit, they were after all on two separate parts of a war that had been going on much longer then the problems of the Xet. At least as far as he knew.

Around the corner, he could see the light of a lantern in the night, from the metal sound it was most likely one of the guards, or someone who fancied themselves an adventurer.... He could hear it in the steps... though, it wasn't that he was an expert, there were many memories associated with such a thing, but they really weren't his. He would never accept them as his own, no matter how many of them he carried.

Just then, as he turned onto the street that the light was coming from, he gave a little smile; his eyes catching up with his expression. It wasn't that he recognized her by face, not yet. It was dark, but that mind... the discipline, the focus. He knew right away that he had met this guard before...

“It would seem that this is a regular occurrence”

As he spoke, he lowered the hood of his cloak...

Charlotte did not have the same gift of empathy the ancient possessed and because she'd had to meet new people on a day to day basis her ability to remember names and faces had suffered. Worse still, it was the dead of night, her eyesight was no better than a human's here. She had not the night vision that some races were possessed, perhaps they were sharper by some small degree but it did not help her perceive the face of a man that was shrouded in the shadow of a hood and the darkness of night.

How was she to reply to his statement? The half-elf was confused, but that concern was swiftly replaced by forthcoming honesty. There was no point in pretending that she remembered him, she could perhaps keep a conversation going and through clues between their dialogue remember who he was but even then she was not certain she would.

"I apologize..." she bowed her head softly in front of this stranger. "Mayhap we've met before? It embarrasses me but I must confess that your name escapes me, might you share it with me again... and if it would not do your trouble I would gaze at your face." all this she said with a warm smile, one that did not reach her eyes but still carried enough sincerity that it seemed natural.

"I hope you are not lost sir, if you've somewhere to go I could escort you."

“Lost? No, I know exactly where I am” There was a hint of nostalgia in those words, “Though, the last time there were many less buildings around us.” he gave a coy smile.

“My name however...” he paused, putting a finger to his lips in a moment of thought... “Well, I suppose I should give it to you now, since we failed to exchange them at our fist meeting... “

He shook his head, “I imagine that we got caught up in what we had been doing, that such things just slipped our minds... But you might remember this? “

He slightly opened his cloak, at his side was a familiar Falchion.

“And, you may call me... Arael”

He gave a small bow of his head.

Less buildings? Then away from the city... she could have met him anywhere, on the many crossroads scattered about the kingdom between the stone bastions of civilization that she spent the most time in. She'd only started roaming the continent a few eras back, surely she would have had some inkling of who this stranger was.

She waited for him to reveal his name and his face. The first he did not offer her on their first meeting and that explained why her memory failed her, the other she remembered though the falchion he presented had proved sufficient in rousing that memory of their meeting that night an era ago.

He was a mage too, such were rare individuals and she would remember him if only for that.

"I remember now, well met Arael." she bent at the knee, the curtsy economical because of the uniform and arms that prevented it. "Have you found what it was you sought in life since we last met?"

“Not quite yet, though I continue to search. What of yourself? “ An open response followed with an open question. It wasn't that he didn't want to go into details, but it was much more interesting to start wide and let the conversation move at its own pace... Though he was also fond of going in circles in some cases...

The city around them seemed to be filled with the chaos that had fallen under the realm. The Xet were something that he was not too enthralled with, though with careful planning they could be used to strike others to action. It was in the darkest moments that even the smallest of candles could burn ever so brightly.

That was something he, while not quite ready to admit, was eager to see.

"I approach it, slowly." she muttered casually, as far as she was concerned she was on the right path to improving herself. Time was her only true enemy as far as improving herself went. It would take very long for the effort she spent every brightening to accumulate into so kind of breakthrough for her. "For now there are responsibilities that I am fulfilling which demands I remain her for some time."

"Do you intend to tarry here long? Life is difficult in Arium at the present, it is not the best place to start a fresh career if you do not have solid prospects of what you desire." she allowed her lantern shield to dip down so the light would not blind Arael. "Beyond meeting your living expenses that is."

It was not usually a good idea to spend too much time outside at such an hour, but this was the height of summer and as such, the air was far warmer than it may have been on an autumn or winter night.

Difficulty breeds opportunity

It was one of the reasons perhaps that Charlotte was fulfilling the demands that she was, because of difficult times. Though, Arael's personality was less suited for the role of a city watchman perhaps. What exactly it was that Arael was going to be doing here, that had remained yet undecided. He would have to get to know more about this city and its needs first..

Mayhaps, though I have nary an idea of what yet to do. Perhaps you could show me the city? As a watchguard you must know more then would I traveling alone...

He gave her a smile,

And, traveling with you, I need not worry too much of being accosted

"You overestimate my strength I think." she said coolly, though not harshly. Arael may have been impressed with her abilities, but she knew the darkness of the city and arrogance could be the death of her. Exercising humility saved more than it killed.

"I would not counsel roaming these streets under the cover of night, but mayhap the better guarded districts are worth looking into." she changed the path which she followed to take them from this less safe part of the city to wealthier and better guarded streets of that the merchants ruled over.

"A word of caution," she told Arael firmly. "This city has laws, old laws, it makes little sense to me in this brightening and age but it appears they outlaw the use of certain colors, black, red and purple in clothing unless you've a noble lineage to give you the right to wear them. Heed not this rule and they would strip the very clothes off your back on the streets... though not all guards are so harsh, there are those who would abuse their power."

“I see... “

He gave Charlotte a thoughtful look for a moment, before Raising a finger to his chin in contemplation before speaking again, this time putting back the smile that he usually has...

“Then, It is good that I am of Noble lineage~”

Simple as that, with a playful tone in his voice as he gave the area around them another look, taking in the view of where they were in the Darkness, the faint glow of the lantern carried by Charlotte creating frightening shadows in the corners... After a moment, he turned back to see her expression; he imagined it to be something rather stoic then utter surprise. She didn't really seem like the kind to stand with a gaping expression on ones face.

“Though, for now... I'd rather not discuss my family. Not at the moment”

A quick diversion to keep her from going to far down any path about too much inquiries about that topic.

”Now then, Tell me about Nexus Prime as we travel... What has it been like here?”

She did not mind his eccentric behavior, many nobles had a quirk or two nor did she care about his reluctance to share his family name with her. The issue with clothing was not within the scope of her responsibilities and she had more on her hands than enforcing laws that had long since lost purpose. Besides, she too once upon a time had reason to hide her own origins. She was not a hypocrite to scold the boy on something she herself was guilty of.

"I will not press the issue now that I've given you due warning." she told him politely. "Rest assured I shall not pry into your past." it was too much work when there was no need to do so, curiosity was a quality she possessed but not in excess. Tempering curiosity was just as important as possessing it, knowing when and where to ask questions was something she had only just began to grasp in the last few eras of her life.

"A city at the corner of the kingdom, it lies before the danger posed by the Xet and will most likely face the brunt of the vanguard of the Xet army when war finally comes to us." she murmured, trying to summarize the city and its state for the young man. "It enjoys its position as a chief port city in norther arium along with Paxia, goods from all over the province could be exported from here and sent across the kingdom. In the same manner, almost anything could be imported to the city if you are acquainted with the right people and have coin enough."

"Nexus Prime does not strike me as an artistically inclined city, but more a merchant's capital where making and spending coin is ever at the heart of the citizenry. It used to be a practical place to reside in before the fog, perhaps if we survive the coming darkness and the fog lifts once and for all it may return to a shining city at the forefront of development in the north... well, that is our hope."

”Of course, warning noted”

Arael listened as Charlotte described the state of Nexus Prime to him, it had seemed that for all the blessings of the city being a hub of trade, it was also cursed as the miasma that the Xet had used to take away parts of the empire was sitting just outside its gates (of course not literally) and it seemed that when the Xet attacked, they would be one of the first villages to feel the brunt of an all out assult

At least, that was the impression. Arael felt that either they would attack all at once, or strike from the inside and push out.
“There is a possibility that, this might be one of the last places to be attacked... I know it might sound strange to you to hear such a thing, but you must remember that the Xet are not bound by the same tactics. Movement is a simple thing for them, it would make much more sense for them to attack from the heart of the empire and push out, leaving no room for their adversaries to escape to. “

He had seen it before, after all the struck Throneworld from nowhere... And since they wanted to enslave or kill, it was the most effective way to go about it, there would be no where to run if they took out the center of the empire first, they already had parts of it surrounded.

“Though maybe its better to give the hope that there will be place to flee too... for the people here at the wall of miasma”

He just realized that his statement while a bit pragmatic was not what the people here would need to hear to get them thru this... difficult time.

"Indeed... that is entirely possible however... however my heart tells me that it is not so." it was perhaps irrational, even whimsical to say so, but she she had hope. "You could say it is woman's intuition, but I suspect there are limitations to their mobility. Else they would have deployed this fog in the heart of the prime province instead where it would have greater effect on the empire at large."

"Regardless of what arrives we've done our best. The city's defenses have been bolstered and she is stronger than ever."
this she said with some reassurance. Of course she would not tell Arael the fact that she was directly involved in that, but he might be able to sense the growing ember of pride within her. "If the gods will hear our prayers they will allow us to survive... otherwise we will just have to create our own miracle." her smile was infectious, odd, given the bleak hopelessness that encroached upon the lands to the west.

"What of you Arael? Will you take up arms against the Xet when they do come?"

”I wonder about that fog... what it's purpose truly is, and why they have not yet pushed it to more of the empire...Hopefully where it is is as far as it will press”

He smiled back at Charlotte, she was in the right spirits for this moment, to have hope, to not give in to the fear that they had created around the empire... It would be beacons of light such as herself that would turn the tide of battle... whether those beacons knew it yet or not.

”Should it come to that, I would join in taking up arms against them. I have already witnessed the fall of my home to the Xet, I shan't stand by and watch them take away another's”

He gave her a nod

”I imagine that you will also take up arms against them”

"I see..." so he was from one of the provinces devoured by the fog, naturally she never contemplated the other possibility but Charlotte's mind rationalized the closest practical answer. "Someone must." she brightly told him.

"The only advice I can give you is if you mean to harm the Xet through spells it is easier to accomplish this through indirect methods." what she was sharing was only her experience with the creatures, given how many there were she wasn't certain if this strategy would work against them all. "Arcana seems to be neutralized by their physiology or armor, however... propelled objects like a spear sent flying with magic would already possess kinetic energy that can no longer be dispelled by the insects."

"Are you famished? We could stop by a place I know, they've warm meals and even warmer halls."
