Wiki Roll-out: Ikonomancy & Crime

We have a big roll out today of the long-awaited Ikonomancy article! Should you have any questions or concerns related to Ikos, please post those questions here. We understand that it is different from what it previously was so rather than fumble around with it yourself, you encourage you to pose questions. As ever, some things may need tweaks and edits somewhere down the road as we figure out what may or may not be working with the system. Questions help us figure that out!

1. Ikonomancy - Ikos, or ikonomancy, is a material and spectral magic and counts as a magic skill. Ikonomancers are specialised mages that use runes to alter non-living objects in various beneficial ways. Ikonomancers are attuned to runic magic through a mysterious process known as conscription.

2. Crime & Punishment - A compilation of some crimes often committed throughout the empire.

3. Criminal Organizations - There are a great many criminal organisations to be found throughout the Aelyrian Empire, this list provides some of the larger and more dangerous organisations but is by no means an exhaustive list.

Spellbreaking will be making a return soon (a prime example of something that needed retouched after seeing how it was functioning with the new system) and we hope to see the Arakmat articles pushed through as well. Still chugging along!

So I have a question about Ikos and the runes that Ikonomancers gain access to at each level:

When they, for example, become an initiate, do all ikonomancers gain access to the same 3 runes? Or is each experience different? I was just curious because the write up didn't specify.

Much like arcana, everyone's experience is different. There's no set runes/spells for any level. I don't think that really needs specified since we've clarified through just about all skills that people learn according to their own encounters and experiences

Thanks so much to the working group, this is awesome!

I had a question regarding the runes themselves: how do we come up with their names? Is there a master dictionary, do runecasters make them up on the spot, and if so is there a repository for "discovered" runes for consistency in modding?

You can name them any way you please, runes are a personal thing. You can't teach someone else your runes, so you can name them whatever you want and it wouldn't make sense to another ikomancer anyway. You could theoretically have a school of ikonomancers where they practise a common naming theme, but it'd be a cultural oddity mainly.

Good revamp. Its inscribe-and-cast procedure now allows practitioners to use their power in real time (i. e. raids)! By the way, does the inscription part require moderation? I mean, can ikonomancers write runes in exposition threads, for later use?

Runes now decay over time, so we have to keep track of their creation date, like spell scrolls. I love this feature, I always wanted to see a wizard reading a scroll in the middle of a battle... well, it will be funny to see their faces when they open the scroll and see their spell has expired

Another question: how is the automatic learning of runes moderated? Does the player choose them? Shall we roleplay a sudden inspiration of lore? Theoretically, levelling up to journeyman is automatic, so an ikonomancer would learn three runes just after the end of the thread when they get the required XP.

I'm not going to harass people to show every single instance where they've written down every rune, no. What I will ask is that every Ikonomancer record on their CIR what runes they know so we know that people aren't ass-pulling when they cast. We've gotten away from mindless threads. Of course, if you want to still do so, you can.

It can be determined by a moderator or by the player, depending on circumstances (i.e., you auto level with the prereq xp or you're being moderated). Otherwise it's really no different from spell casting mechanisms.

I don't know that anyone put in the write up that there's a set expiration date for the runes so I'm not sure a time limit for your runes is going to be necessary to track... They will deteriorate or get destroyed in unstable or greater castings. If you have them tattooed on your body and they get sliced up by something then they're destroyed. If someone screws up your grimoire somehow then they're destroyed. \o/

A couple questions!

Do runes work on "inanimate" objects (e.g. trees, grass, etc.) or just "non-living" objects (e.g. rocks, water, etc.)? The write-up says different things in different sections and I was hoping to clarify.

Also along those lines, would objects that are actually no longer living allow runes to be applied (such as bones, hair, corpses of animals/people)? And if so, would they be considered non-living and fair game immediately after death?

Answer:

The idea is that it's basically anything that's not alive (as opposed to Song which is mostly about buffing people/living things).

With caveats that things like multiple objects are difficult to do anything about (like a hail of arrows for instance) and that size/area of effect is determined roughly by level/how many runes you use.
